Hugo Recommendations: Best Related Work

This is how I am voting in the Best Related Work category. Of course, I merely offer this information regarding my individual ballot for no particular reason at all, and the fact that I have done so should not be confused in any way, shape, or form with a slate or a bloc vote, much less a direct order by the Supreme Dark Lord of the Evil Legion of Evil to his 383 Vile Faceless Minions or anyone else.
  1. "The Hot Equations: Thermodynamics and Military SF"
  2. Transhuman and Subhuman: Essays on Science Fiction and Awful Truth
  3. "Why Science is Never Settled"
  4. Letters from Gardner
  5. Wisdom from My Internet
Best Novel
Best Novella

"...much less a direct order by the Supreme Dark Lord of the Evil Legion of Evil to his 383 Vile Faceless Minions or anyone else."

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Blogger Corvinus June 23, 2015 12:24 PM

I'm a bit slow, still finishing up the last of the novels.

But for Best Novel, I'll probably be voting the same way Nate is.

Blogger Chris Scena June 23, 2015 12:33 PM

Why is "Best Fan Writer" linked to Gerrib's page? I could do without looking at his smarmy face.

Anonymous RedJack #22 June 23, 2015 12:36 PM

I really like "Hot Equations", though I had some issues with the conclusions.

Not enough to really say "It won't work" though. Dumping heat in a star ship without giving your position away is a huge issue.

Its like Vox is reading our minds or somethin.

OT, but Google:

Yesterday, news broke that Google has been stealth downloading audio listeners onto every computer that runs Chrome, and transmits audio data back to Google. Effectively, this means that Google had taken itself the right to listen to every conversation in every room that runs Chrome somewhere, without any kind of consent from the people eavesdropped on. In official statements, Google shrugged off the practice with what amounts to “we can do that”.

Google is evil

In innumerable hamlets, villages, and small towns; in offices high, and in darken caves the Whisper went out.
"Go forth, my minion.'
And at desks of senior computer engineers, and in hunting blinds, those things that were not, could not for they had cast such weakness off, tore loose their Human skins, tossed them contemptously aside, and slittered, and dripped, drabbled and groaned their way in pursuit of the Dark Lord's mystic will.

The vile ones, sombre in color, but laughing in mood, dragged their nonhuman flesh into lines as they surged down the valley toward the enemy fort, a solitary tor made of sandstone piercing upward, wider at the top, in perversion of nature's laws.
The faceless not men, dragged catapults, from which to launch live cats, and heaved whole casques of errows to shoot down ...
And one minion came upon a dead cow, eaten from the front it seemed, and his step, so clear, so sharp, now mumbled.
And then in front of him, lantern like eyes, seemingly lit by orange fires from within opened. And from mid-tree height, a voice, contrabassoon, and yet mild in manner spoke.
'What means this?"
"The." "Dark." And the minions walked around, in unending tide, a black, mucously stream from some foul spring in the depths of the Netherworlds, each minion speaking one word, to carry on the explanation. 'Lord.' "Orders." "We...go...to....shatter...Tor.'
And the thing looked up, and the whole surface of the valley crawled in the incarnadine moonlight.

"Tell your dark master that the Balrog, and his goblin hordes stirs." The thing said, rising to its full height.

It had been living, but another. Then dead. Now it lived again, but as a monstrous thing, not a man, though formed in the shape of a man, yet taller than a tree. For the good doctor Frankenstein had survived the attack of the first monster, and gone on to learn darker secrets.

"We will." Said two, and then others repeated, and more repeated, and bucket like brigade, the message was born to the Dark Lord who reclined in his adamantine black chariot named Scythis Tyrannis, adorned with the shrunken heads of his enemies.
"Not surprising, but welcome news, all the same."
He rose, like a great leopard.
"Malwynn, whip the Minions. We must go faster."
And amid moans of pleasure, the minions increased their pace, and cried 'faster' and 'are you entertained'. and so in minutes, the Tree Tall Thing heard the cries echoing up to the front, and decided...
Heh. Why not.
And joined in the march.

The vile ones, sombre in color, but laughing in mood, dragged their nonhuman flesh into lines...

I believe you mean non-pure homo sapiens sapiens

Anonymous Roundtine June 23, 2015 1:28 PM

If you were sufficiently autistic, you could use the Hot Equations to post for days upon days of mistakes in sci-fi movies at IMDB. My favorite is still whoever sat down and went through everything in Star Wars, such as there are two suns at Tatooine, but people only have one shadow,

I just input my picks for some things.

I did pick No Award for the graphic novels. They were all lousy in my view.

Eric - I enjoyed that, thank you.

And "incarnadine moonlight" - excellent.

Blogger SirHamster (#201) June 23, 2015 1:59 PM

I thought that Hot Equations was by far the best Sci-Fi work, and I see VD agrees with this minion. :)

Google is evil

Always disliked their "Don't be Evil" motto. What are you thinking and doing, that you need to tell us to reassure us? And yet again, we see the truth that SJWs always lie.

Anonymous ticticboom June 23, 2015 2:16 PM

"Don't be evil."

Google makes me think of a clown at a little kid's birthday party constantly muttering to himself, "Don't touch the merchandise."

Blogger Alexander June 23, 2015 2:18 PM

Same. It's like someone who introduces them-self with "I'm not crazy".

Or some guy in an alley muttering how it's wrong to kill people.

Blogger Alexander June 23, 2015 2:21 PM

"And a golden editor's pencil for Alexander."

If it's not too much trouble, I'd prefer a nomination for best editor - short form, next year at the Hugos.

Some of you probably think I didn't do quite enough work to merit such a prestigious award. But let me remind you the John Scalzi criteria. If:
1. You like me
2. Think I'd like to have a Hugo

Then you can in good conscience put me up for the award.

Yours,
Alexander

Roundtine,

At certain, with certain people, after a lot of alcohol, I do just that.

But engineers are odd.

Anonymous 334 June 23, 2015 2:26 PM

Minion #400 coming your way real soon ...

Anonymous James Parliament June 23, 2015 3:08 PM

Not an award yet, but I nominate Alexander for best segue to a Scalzi Scalding.

My laugh was audible, sir.

Anonymous BigGaySteve June 23, 2015 3:41 PM

See I am truly independent and will be voting for "If you where a Sam's club pallet of Doritos with one bag poisoned my love" By GRRM

"Don't be evil." Google makes me think of a clown at a little kid's birthday party constantly muttering to himself, "Don't touch the merchandise."

They don't seem to be trying too hard.

Google article linked above
brief explanation of the Open-source / Free-software philosophy is needed here. When you’re installing a version of GNU/Linux like Debian or Ubuntu onto a fresh computer, thousands of really smart people have analyzed every line of human-readable source code before that operating system was built into computer-executable binary code,
HAHAHA! And I have a bridge to sell you! In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice...

Truth is everyone wants to be a writer of source, no one wants to be a reviewer. Lots of OSS is still essentially unreviewed.

Anonymous Dave June 23, 2015 4:22 PM

trans editor, short form

Anonymous Daniel #0189 June 23, 2015 4:26 PM

So, because I'm not a neo-nazi who prefers "bad to reprehensible" works, I march lockstep with the boycott of Tor Books. Because I am VFM #0189...I march lockstep with this list that in no way is a recommendation.

Of course, I am merely an animatronic device in someone else's movie, so...by all means, SJWs of the world (that is, thrift stores, boiled $5 latte covens and the rainbow hair dye section of Walmart)...continue to pay no attention to this vaporware bot...

...I vote in peace.

Anonymous Dave June 23, 2015 4:29 PM

#451 is still available then, damn this sequential numbering

Blogger ScuzzaMan June 23, 2015 5:31 PM

The Dark Lord is brutally honest, even with his enemies, as even some of his minions have discovered to our lasting chagrin.

There will be no accusations of inflated minions (well, not in the numeric sense, anyway) and no ammunition provided our enemies, no cause given them for same.

My Hugo ballot is my own and any resemblance to that of Vox Day is purely coincidental.

The Hot Equations is the most deserving hugo nomination of the last 10 years.

BGS - They've set a rather low bar for themselves as to what actually constitutes 'good' behavior. I think it's somewhere below mugging old ladies but above stealing granny's paper off the porch. Pretty sure they believe as long as they do it, it's not evil.
