The First Law in action

The SJWs trying to save Irene Gallo and Patrick Nielsen Hayden from the Macmillan axe must be getting desperate. In addition to launching a "Buy Tor books" campaign in response to the boycott they mocked, they're doing what SJWs always do.

Which is what? All together now.... In this case, the SJWs in science fiction are pretending to buy books that they're not actually buying. ED noticed a recurring pattern on Twitter today:

So they're tweeting identical messages on a 61 minute interval. I'm not familiar with bots; is this what they do? Tweet the exact same message after a set time has elapsed over and over again?

If these were programmed, you'd expect the to put in at least some variation in content and timing to make it look natural. Word choice, capitalization, punctuation, the occasional spelling error, anything.

Kurt Busiek is a commenter at File 770. Perhaps he is the one responsible. Or perhaps his was the original and was then copied by the spammer.

This is a patently obvious network of sock puppets. I looked at three of the tweeters, and they all had ~150 tweets, most of which were random weird things. Then I looked at a few of their followers. They also all had about 150 tweets. And hilariously false names like Xanthe Yates.

Bots do whatever they're programmed to do. Apparently telling the bot to fire every rand(1, 200) minutes was too difficult.

If these were programmed, you'd expect the to put in at least some variation in content and timing to make it look natural. Word choice, capitalization, punctuation, the occasional spelling error, anything.

For a competent bot-controller trying to imitate a grass roots movement, sure. But competence is selected against in SJW-land. (And creating different speech patterns is a hard AI level problem)

Blogger automatthew June 19, 2015 7:38 PM

Eh, purchased Indonesian twitter followers. Somebody spent went to a web site, spent 5 bucks and a provided message to some entrepreneur in a spider-infested 3rd-world country. They will get a couple hundred tweets out of it. The programs or, more probably, people hired don't care any more than a VFM would care about the content.

Blogger automatthew June 19, 2015 7:43 PM

They almost surely did. But they probably have n phrases that are chosen from randomly-- only one was caught so far.

So this probably represents 10% or 5% or whatever of the actual tweets sent out. If you look long enough, you can probably identify the whole pool of phrases that were programmed in.

How hard is it to construct an abstract thought in lambda calculus and then randomly generate English sentences that express that thought? On the other hand, I guess you need to be capable of rational thought before you can write a program that simulates it.

Anonymous Satan's Hamster June 19, 2015 10:45 PM

"i suggest that we campaign for the woman to be chosen."

How about Ayn Rand?

Back on topic, SJWs know their 'boycotts' are worthless, because they only 'boycott' things they wouldn't have bought anyway. They just twit and facebook a lot and hope the PR weenies at the company they're 'boycotting' freak out and do the wrong thing. Sane companies have found that SJW hate campaigns are the best free PR they can get, so long as they give the SJWs the finger.

But SJWs also know that, when we actually get pissed off enough to boycott someone, our boycotts work, because we boycott companies we actually would buy from. I've bought few Tor books in recent years because they haven't published many I'd want to buy, but I've deleted the three that were on my Amazon wishlist. If Tor dump the SJWs and start publishing books I want to buy again, I'll buy them.

In the meantime, I'll buy more indie and small press books with that money; I've found more good SF books to buy in the couple of months I've been reading Puppy blogs than in the last ten years of Tor's output.

Anonymous Ain June 19, 2015 11:14 PM

If you are going to but a woman on the $10 bill. I think there is only one real choice.

They want this because feminism, because girl power, because womyn's rights, because suffrage, because misogyny.

And the only choice on a fiat "money" fake currency, with the purpose of capturing the essence of the feminist movement, is a fraud like Margaret Sanger. The patron saint of the feminist movement. The woman who made is possible for womyn to murder their children in the womb. To live slutish, irresponsible sexual lives. To be "empowered" to live without consequence for spreading their legs to any/every male that comes along.

Clearly Sanger is the perfect choice to memorialise/celebrate the feminist movement.

Anonymous Godfrey June 19, 2015 11:43 PM

DC/Marvel descended into the PC abyss years ago. Romantic love, children, the male/female dynamic, interesting characterizations, etc. all gone. However, it does very much seem like they are using some piece of software to create their own 'thunderclap', so anything being said should be taken with a grain of salt.

It's all very ineptly done in any case, the tweets uses no tag, so this thunderclap isn't going to get any hashtag to trend and since these people haven't got the imagination to all come up with 140 characters themselves, who is actually going to believe them in the first place?

I'm in favor of the black-knighting effort on the $10 on general principles. What goes around comes around, you know?

But please at least scan (or actually read) the article first. It's clearly stated in there that the person on the bill must be dead (by law). Unless brain dead counts Jenner and the rest of that insane family are all out of the running.

A blatant example of vivism.

Let the dead arise!

FriarBob,

The part of me that wants a visit from the FBI might write something with "minor problem" or "details" in it.

Instead I'll just ask, "Does his career count?"

Nancy Reagan, anyone? Pat Nixon?
How about Mamie Eisenhower?
Dolly Madison?
That Challenger astronaut teacher-lady?

Well here is an opportunity for the SJW's to put up or shut up. Since *we* have clearly demonstrated that the "Buy a book" thing is a bot net, and posted compelling evidence, let's have "them" show similar proof that the emails from the Puppies, Dread Ilk, VFM's, disgruntled authors and angry customers were fake by posting our emails to Tor and Macmillan on the Internet.

What's that? Hillary Clinton was in charge of the Tor email accounts? A clumsy minion accidentally deleted the files containing the emails? The dog ate the backup tapes?

Colour me surprised.

@Quizzer Meh, considering the suicide rate among such people he might qualify in the medium-term future after all. Then again, he might actually find his senses first. We certainly should hope so. It might well be the for the first time in his life, but better late than never.

@James Wright Everybody of course knows Ronald is dead but I had forgotten (or missed) Nancy's passing. She would actually be a worthwhile candidate. And the teacher from the Challenger disaster (I too had to look up her name, but it was Christa McAuliffe) would also probably be worthy, and possibly even more so her fellow crewmember (Judith Resnik) as well. Of course that makes them suboptimal for a deliberate black-knight project. But for those who want to put forth a serious candidate, they appear good choices to me.

I was a hipster before it was cool.

Q: How did the hipster burn his mouth?
A: He ate pizza before it was cool.

Of course these are all legitimate Twitter posts!

And Raymond Shaw is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life.
