Hugo Recommendations: Best Professional Artist

This is how I am voting in the Best Professional Artist category. Of course, I merely offer this information regarding my individual ballot for no particular reason at all, and the fact that I have done so should not be confused in any way, shape, or form with a slate or a bloc vote, much less a direct order by the Supreme Dark Lord of the Evil Legion of Evil to his 390 Vile Faceless Minions or anyone else.
  1. Kirk DouPonce
  2. Alan Polack
  3. Julie Dillon
  4. Nick Greenwood
  5. Carter Reid
Best Novel
Best Novella
Best Short Story
Best Fan Writer
Best Related Work
Best Editor

I'll put up my complete ballot tomorrow. But in the meantime, perhaps this will help explain why I believe Kirk DouPonce to be one of the best cover artists in the business.

What is that from?

Dammit Vox stop teasing us about Sea of Skulls. If they ever create a new Hugo - "G'Rape Rape'M Award for Longest Time Anticipating a Sequel" - I'm nominating you as the first recipient.

Blogger Daniel July 22, 2015 1:49 PM

My God. It's full of skulls.

Anonymous Leatherwing July 22, 2015 1:55 PM

That's a gorgeous piece of art.

Anonymous 10900209 July 22, 2015 1:56 PM

Looking at all these artist's websites:

Kirk DouPonce is using a lot of photo-manipulation, which is fine, but it's unfair to have him in the running against painters. You can judge an artist by how well they paint a face; DouPonce seems to invariably just use photos for this.

Alan Polack is a very competent painter. The best of these four by a good distance from what I can tell.

Julie Dillon has some appealing work... but I wouldn't vote for her as the best painter of these four.

Carter Reid's work seems to consist most of drawings of zombies? His work is the weakest of the bunch imo.

Vikings, very cool, since I have Danish blood in me, and my ancestors laid claim to the emerald Island.
Historically correct also, red and white vertical stripes.http://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1t6apd/were_the_sails_of_viking_longships_really_striped/

That is an awesome cover. I love the composition, and the use of light and colour. The sea spray is so well done it almost looks photorealistic.

Is that the cover of "SJWs Always Lie"?

Blogger jay c July 22, 2015 2:22 PM

Your list isn't too different from mine. Why did you leave off Greenwood?

Blogger automattthew July 22, 2015 2:27 PM

@5. but it's unfair to have him in the running against painters

And it's even more unfair when you consider how much more effort is required from the people who make jelly-bean mosaics to create their art. Especially the ones with eating disorders, for whom it is difficult to refrain from eating their medium.

Blogger automattthew July 22, 2015 2:29 PM

The central Baphomet-like figure reminds me of that Dali skull-made-of-nudes photo.

Was that intentional?

Blogger JartStar July 22, 2015 2:30 PM

10900209,

It's Best Professional Artist not Best Painter.

Blogger VD July 22, 2015 2:40 PM

Your list isn't too different from mine. Why did you leave off Greenwood?

Mistake. I have him at #4.

@Daniel "My God. It's full of skulls."

A veritable sea of them.

So that's the universal qualitative criteria. I didn't know that.

So that's the universal qualitative criteria. I didn't know that.

I personally look at feet (which seems to be a large failing in many artists) and hands (which, iirc, is considered to be the most intricate and difficult part on the body to do correctly).

Anonymous Daniel #0189 July 22, 2015 3:23 PM

The novel will be finished in what...about two stadia?

Anonymous Viidad July 22, 2015 3:24 PM

Faces are one thing - hands and feet are even worse. Amateur artists often hide the hands so they don't get called out on their lack of rendering skill.

Anonymous Viidad July 22, 2015 3:24 PM

@Student in Blue

You beat me to it.

Anonymous Viidad July 22, 2015 3:30 PM

As much as I like what DouPonce has done, I've got to vote Pollack or Greenwood for top slot.

Blogger GK Chesterton July 22, 2015 3:33 PM

There is a reason stick figures have neither hands nor feet. And yes, a visual artist should be a talented painter.

OT: Seattle trash men to go through trash looking for compostables. Maybe David should tweet some Seattle people.

If this is the new cover for your upcoming book, well, in your own words Vox "Ye Cats". The big skull almost looks like it has a smaller face centered in the middle of it where the nose should be. As good as the green eyed skull gate cover is, this is magnitudes better. It implies a creepy horror before you even crack the book open.

Never thought I would say this either, but for this cover, I hope that your writing is up to the level of this incredible cover art. This cover promises a lot. Fantastic, and BRAVO to the artist extraordinaire.

Anonymous Steve July 22, 2015 5:17 PM

Susan - "Ye Cats"

I'm led to understand the Dark Lord isn't a cat person, but if he was...

It is a great cover. The glowing ruby eyes bring it all together.

Blogger MidKnight (#138) July 22, 2015 5:43 PM

Interestingly, I had mine in almost exactly that order, with #3 and #4 reversed. Kirk was the best hands down.

Blogger Quadko July 22, 2015 5:45 PM

Is that the cover of "SJWs Always Lie"?
No, not enough skulls.

Blogger Nate July 22, 2015 7:30 PM

I find the "he uses pictures" criticism to be lame beyond words.

Blogger VD July 22, 2015 7:54 PM

I find the "he uses pictures" criticism to be lame beyond words.

You could not be more wrong. How much skill does it take to jam a pair of garnets into a dragon skull and then take a picture of it? The award is for BEST PROFESSIONAL ARTIST, not Best Archeological Photographer.

Get educated!

Blogger Nate July 22, 2015 8:06 PM

"Get educated!"

no doubt if I just had the proper 100 level college course I could easily produce covers just as good as Kirk's.

Blogger Nate July 22, 2015 8:08 PM

ya know vox you'd think think they'd at least give him credit for having garnets that size on hand... not to mention you know... the dragon skull.

Many have bemoaned the death of the full-size record album because of the loss of the wall art of the album covers. This cover makes me want a tangible, full-size, wall-mountable dust jacket from a real, physical book.

Blogger grendel July 22, 2015 9:31 PM

That cover is more metal than Megadeth in an M-1.

i'll have you know, that's the ship that made the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs.

seconded.

Blogger Rupert Crowler July 23, 2015 8:26 AM

The bloke can paint a portrait. Look at Summa Elvetica, that's not photography.

Anonymous Book_Girl July 23, 2015 8:59 AM

That is an AMAZING piece of art! Mr. DouPounce has my vote easily!

And I was going to say the same thing Jartstar did. The award isn't for best painter. It's Best professional artist. Far more to art than just painting.
