Media as weapon

We've certainly seen this with both #GamerGate and Sad Puppies. But given how resorting to it has failed against us, I very much doubt it will work against Google.
If you talk to the reporters who work for various big media companies, they insist that they have true editorial independence from the business side of their companies. They insist that the news coverage isn't designed to reflect the business interests of their owners. Of course, most people have always suspected this was bullshit -- and you could see evidence of this in things like the fact that the big TV networks refused to cover the SOPA protests. But -- until now -- there's never necessarily been a smoking gun with evidence of how such business interests influences the editorial side.

Earlier this month, we noted that the Hollywood studios were all resisting subpoenas from Google concerning their super cozy relationship with Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood, whose highly questionable "investigation" of Google appeared to actually be run by the MPAA and the studios themselves. The entire "investigation" seemed to clearly be an attempt to mislead the public into believing that it was somehow illegal for Google's search engine to find stuff that people didn't like online. A court has already ruled that Hood pretty clearly acted in bad faith to deprive Google of its First Amendment rights. As the case has continued, Google has sought much more detail on just how much of the investigation was run by the MPAA and the studios -- and Hollywood has vigorously resisted, claiming that they really had nothing to do with all of this, which was a laughable assertion.

However, in a filing on Thursday, Google revealed one of the few emails that they have been able to get access to so far, and it's stunning. It's an email between the MPAA and two of Jim Hood's top lawyers in the Mississippi AG's office, discussing the big plan to "hurt" Google. Beyond influencing other Attorneys General (using misleading fake "setups" of searches for "bad" material) and paying for fake anti-Google research, the lawyers from Hood's office flat out admit that they're expecting the MPAA and the major studios to have its media arms run a coordinated propaganda campaign of bogus anti-Google stories:

Media: We want to make sure that the media is at the NAAG meeting. We propose working with MPAA (Vans), Comcast, and NewsCorp (Bill Guidera) to see about working with a PR firm to create an attack on Google (and others who are resisting AG efforts to address online piracy). This PR firm can be funded through a nonprofit dedicated to IP issues. The "live buys" should be available for the media to see, followed by a segment the next day on the Today Show (David green can help with this). After the Today Show segment, you want to have a large investor of Google (George can help us determine that) come forward and say that Google needs to change its behavior/demand reform. Next, you want NewsCorp to develop and place an editorial in the WSJ emphasizing that Google's stock will lose value in the face of a sustained attack by AGs and noting some of the possible causes of action we have developed.

In other words, Jim Hood and the MPAA were out and out planning a coordinated media attack on Google using the editorial properties that supposedly claim to have editorial independence from the business side.
I don't know anyone who still takes the media at face value. If you do, you're obviously either a) not very bright, or, b) not paying attention.

Not to flog the horse, but it looks to me as if one group of lefty-supporters is trying to beat up another lefty-supporting operation. What's not to like? O'course I suspect if Dante's Pit opened up and all of google and its supporters fell in, well that might not be such a bad thing, heh, heh, heh.

Never try to interrupt left-on-left violence.

Support both sides with as much energy as you can. Make them live up to their ideals.

@2: True, never interrupt left-on-left violence.

But how much do you wanna bet some cuckservatives will still try anyway? When your existence is defined by your enemy...

or choose the lesser of two evils and back him against the other evil lefty

Although I think google is an example of an American entrepreneur success story, so I won't be so quick to vilify them, as some other may. Yeah, they are lefty, but so are all major corporations because that's how you don't get sued and get bad press. Blame the media, the liberals and the lawyers, not the companies.

According to an article at iSteve, the elites have always considered the media to be their hand maiden.

I am not bright and not paying attention and even I know that the media is a big mean fib.

Funny if the media just stopped showing up in searches...

C.) You are batshit crazy. The majority of people I know scarily fall into that category.

The best line ever from a Hollywood movie:
Neo: "We need guns. Lots of guns."

Which is why it is so important to open and support alternative media channels. The "elites" are terrified if the Internet, but have tools to try and bring it under control, ranging from the FCC's claim of being able to regulate the Internet to the ceaseless law fare waged against small bloggers to shut them down and intimidate others.

Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit wonders why conservative millionaires don't start buying failing media properties and recast them in their own image, and this could be replicated down to the "community newspaper/community radio station" level, to cut out the grassroots audience of the Legacy Media.

And of course Samizdat is an effective technique, which can be updated with modern technologies. Imagine a Samizdat campaign where small snippets of news the "elites" don't want to be seen show up as stickers on bus shelters, telephone poles, bulletin boards etc. How does the Legacy Media even track such things, much less react to them?

Media still has lots of advantages in terms of size and penetration, but we need to think like an army of small furry mammals eating dinosaur eggs to really drive them to extinction.

Read what Biden supporters are saying about his potential run... and you'll know there is no real media. It is like the JC Whitney Catalog of Stupid.

Blogger ScuzzaMan July 26, 2015 1:40 PM

Now think about who else has the wealth and power to run a full court media press to cover their crimes and/or suppress their opponents.

The elites act like there will be no consequences for them.

Maybe they are right. They just decamp to the next host.

I've considered the media as the enemy for quite some time now. The propaganda arm of government and the left for decades, with just the occasional redoubt of non leftist thought and stories.

Blogger Groot July 26, 2015 1:53 PM

There's no need to interrupt but it's interesting to watch a liberal being mugged by another liberal. The lawyers, the banks, big education, etc., all get their money from big government and are institutionally statist. Not so silicon valley. There, it is just a cultural effect of people streaming from university indoctrination to a bubble of their autistic ilk.

Their interests can easily be at odds with statism. Look at Apple, SJW-central, but even they have rolled out end-to-end encryption. Hardware companies have lost billions due to the NSA-induced loss of reputation and trust.

This could be fun.

Blogger ScuzzaMan July 26, 2015 1:55 PM

Rolf, their job is not only to manufacture consent by moulding opinions, but also to foster the illusion of real opposition while they do so.

I would like to remind you that google has plans to judge the trutheyness of webpages and hide facts that it would rather not be known like black on white crime.

Anonymous Jack Ward July 26, 2015 2:25 PM

OT but fun. Sasquan member numbers today at 10157. I so hope there will be a live feed of the awards ceremony. And, I pray that Vox and JCW are there. Can you imagine the acceptance speech by John Wright? My, my the dvd burner will be running hot and heavy.

Yes... This has all the appearances of two AwS collectives seeking to annihilate each other WITH the end result BOUND to be EVEN MORE radical autonomy for both sides. In other words, AwS is advanced and perpetuated. So both Google and Hollywood will put on a "good show" with each side coming out of the ruckus able to do even more liberated "things" than before. Hollywood will have greater scope to annihilate piracy and Google will have greater scope to perpetuate false memes and totally degenerate material.

The media has never been honest. You're just seeing the lies now, because they don't care anymore. They think they've won. With Granny Badness and El Guapo Boosh on the deck for both parties, they're all celebrating in the Dining Room while the Titanic fills with water.
I went to college and took a course in Mass Media. It was an eye-opening experience. Look up Yellow Journalism on a search engine. Did you know the Pulitzer Prize is FAKE and was made by a newspaper publisher to provide PR and fake accolades to his staff writers? All awards are FAKE, and made by the industry to support their staff to push THEIR NARRATIVE. Its like the Movie ZARDOZ. They are not Gods, they're just conmen. ZARDOZ: wiZARD of OZ.

Anonymous Giuseppe July 26, 2015 3:04 PM

@4 well, as long as by "US success story you mean a CIA/NSA funded enterprise for the purpose of global domination, then I guess you're right.

Anonymous Dave July 26, 2015 4:28 PM

google should cut off access to gmail, google searches etc from any ip within Mississippi. How much heat would the miss AG be willing to take

Blogger Groot July 26, 2015 5:15 PM

ZARDOZ: Sean Connery survives yet another hilarious costuming disaster. Anybody for Sean as an Egyptian peacock? Giuseppe, you were perfect as the Kurgan, though.

Blogger Cail Corishev July 26, 2015 5:42 PM

Yes, it's evil versus evil, but Google is young evil: evil arising from white-collar arrogance, nerd naivete about how the world works, and SJW entryism. Hollywood is old, entrenched, sulfurous evil, the kind that does evil for its own sake.

If there were a news story tomorrow about the bust of a child prostitution ring in Hollywood, implicating thousands of movie and TV people, I'd say, "Yeah, I pretty much figured." If the same story came out, but taking place at Google HQ, I'd be surprised. So it's not hard to find a lesser of two evils.

Anonymous Dave July 26, 2015 6:16 PM
