Police vs media SJW

It's hard to know who to believe when you're dealing with two sets of known liars. But the fact that the police were simply able to produce the recording is sufficient evidence of Ted Rall having exaggerated his experience with the LAPD without even needing to listen to it. As we all know, if the police had done anything wrong, the cameras wouldn't have worked, the tape would have been lost, and the digital recording accidentally erased:
In a May 11 post on The Times' OpinionLA blog, Ted Rall — a freelance cartoonist whose work appears regularly in The Times — described an incident in which he was stopped for jaywalking on Melrose Avenue in 2001. Rall said he was thrown up against a wall, handcuffed and roughed up by an LAPD motorcycle policeman who also threw his driver's license into the sewer. Rall also wrote that dozens of onlookers shouted in protest at the officer's conduct.

Since then, the Los Angeles Police Department has provided records about the incident, including a complaint Rall filed at the time. An audiotape of the encounter recorded by the police officer does not back up Rall's assertions; it gives no indication that there was physical violence of any sort by the policeman or that Rall's license was thrown into the sewer or that he was handcuffed. Nor is there any evidence on the recording of a crowd of shouting onlookers.

In Rall's initial complaint to the LAPD, he describes the incident without mentioning any physical violence or handcuffing but says that the police officer was "belligerent and hostile" and that he threw Rall's license into the "gutter." The tape depicts a polite interaction.

In addition, Rall wrote in his blog post that the LAPD dismissed his complaint without ever contacting him. Department records show that internal affairs investigators made repeated attempts to contact Rall, without success.Asked to explain these inconsistencies, Rall said he stands by his blog post.

As to why he didn't mention any physical abuse in his letter to the LAPD in 2001, Rall said he didn't want to make an enemy of the department, in part because he hosted a local radio talk show at the time. After listening to the tape, Rall noted that it was of poor quality and contained inaudible segments.

However, the recording and other evidence provided by the LAPD raise serious questions about the accuracy of Rall's blog post. Based on this, the piece should not have been published.

Rall's future work will not appear in The Times.
That's a surprisingly harsh standard, though. If the mainstream media is really going to stop publishing journalists and contributors who lie in their articles, it won't be long before the average newspaper consists of nothing but sports scores and classifieds.

Lying is one thing, making the LA Times look worse than it already is is another.

Anonymous FriarBob July 29, 2015 7:04 AM

That would actually improve the paper's quality, though. They'll have to find some other way to drag it back down.

What are these "classifieds" of which you speak?

I didn't realize just how fast the big news papers were dying until I saw the Tennesseans' lead sports writer quit to be the lead editor on the Titans website. So a guy with all kinds of media awards writing for the biggest paper in a state... in one of the only towns in america that is economically booming... wants out because the paper is dying?

If you can't make money in nashville you can't make money. Period.

Anonymous Zippy July 29, 2015 7:49 AM

Wait, you think sports reporters tell the truth?

Maybe about the actual score of the games, or other objectively verifiable facts . . . . but sports reporting is a nest of SJW-ism. Sports reporters stare HBD in the face, and manage not to notice.

Blogger VD July 29, 2015 7:55 AM

Wait, you think sports reporters tell the truth?

Who said anything about that? Why do you think I said "sports scores". I do trust the sports media to accurately report the score of the game. I'll give them that much.

Anonymous Roundtine July 29, 2015 8:03 AM

When I read The Times I was shocked, The Times is actually enforcing standards? Then I click the link and see LA Times. Nice troll! The LA Times is orders of magnitude above the NYTimes when it comes to bias and that is not a compliment to the LA Times.

Ted Rall? The reknowned 'cartoonist' scumbag? The man responsible for some of the nastiest, ugliest cartoons ever committed to paper? THIS is what gets him dropped?

This is like putting away Al Capone for tax evasion, rather than for murdering dozens of opponents. I'll accept the canning, but it should've happened long ago.

It wasn't the police recording that gave it away. It was Rall's claim that dozens of onlookers shouted protest.

For starters, he's not black. Only blacks get that kind of backup when police gets involved... until the tear gas starts flying.

That was the first whiff of bullshit.

NorthernHamlet (#21) I read the article you linked and it seemed pretty typically Gladwell-ish. People have been going after Gladwell lately, and I say it's about damn time. The guy makes valid points, at times, but he also plays fast and loose with the fact.

His exchange with the two Steves -- Pinker and Sailer -- is comedy gold. And it makes you hesitate to ever take him seriously again.

If Gladwell says it's a sunny day, I'm gonna bring my umbrella when I go outside.

For some papers (like my local one) that's the same section M-Th. It only has one writer/editor - the rest is wire copy.

I was travelling in the suburbs of Virgina, outside of the beltway, about 6 weeks ago. There was a conference that was going on for police chiefs in a nondescript middle-tier business hotel.

I was sitting in a conference room working on my laptop, and off to the other side, where the partition would later go up, they were doing an AV check. On the projector were slides from the presentation which was "Dealing Proactively With Race-based Protestors".

One of the strategies was, once targeted, to release information slowly an only when the mob has seized on something. Seems like a good idea to me.

Rall is a vile little shit.

I remember looking at the introduction to a book of his cartoons, in which he said his radicalism stems from being picked on by Republican teenagers back in high school.

Think about that. I don't base my political identity on what happened to me when I was fourteen years old, but Ted Rall not only does, he brags about it. His mind is frozen in adolescence. (His drawing looks more like it's locked in at elementary school.)

We need to start a movement called GROW THE FUCK UP.

"Hipster attacked by police" is a headline any SJW would love to write. But, it's not as important to The Narrative as rape culture is. So in this case, the LA Times chose to fold, rather than try something like, "Even if the story is not 'true,' it raises Important Questions and encourages a Discussion," as the left media did with the Rolling Stone UVA story.

They most certainly are fugly, most webcomics do better. I was surprised however that it was being published in the LA Times. Usually his (and other hard left) 'toons appear in those free urban 'weekly' papers where 3/4 of the ads are bars or restaurants.

I read a newspaper for Sports, the comics, and restaurant reviews. All the so called "news" is so biased in most papers as to be completely worthless without verifying it on multiple fronts, and I don't have that much time. The only newspaper I ever actually read for the news came from a town of 10,000 people. Too small to have much of a bias.

Anonymous Donn #0114 July 29, 2015 11:33 AM

Well unless the NYT said something like an earthquake destroyed DC we wouldn't be able to prove it for today. But show where the NYT lied in the past? Fuck, there isn't enough pixels and electrons to go into their serial lies. They even won awards for some of them. Just google it no need to waste time here over it. It's as established as gravity.

Chronos, you won't usually find out-and-out lies, because that can lead to lawsuits and other embarrassments. What you get rather is sustained, pervasive bias.

Anonymous Legallyspeaking July 29, 2015 6:50 PM

One of the strategies was, once targeted, to release information slowly an only when the mob has seized on something. Seems like a good idea to me.

That was Andrew Breitbart's basic strategy: get a big story, but only dribble small bits out to the lefties. The first bit comes out, the lefties deny and lie, then Breitbart would follow up with the second bit of the story that showed the lefties' denial and lies were just that; lefties regroup and go for denial and lies again about the second part; come out with third part of the story which also debunks the lefties lies and denial on the second part.....etc.

He got so hated very quickly by having them absolutely terrified of every time he claimed a big story. The lefties knew they were ordered to deny and lie, but feared deeply the exposing of their lies by Breitbart.

He also, like Trump, knew how to reframe the issues before the lefties could stop him. Remember how he knocked all of the Occupy Wall Street criminals down about 3 pegs? He simply yelled (with recording equipment on) "Stop raping people!"

Moral authority of the Occupiers nuked.

I've always thought that Breitbart's death should have been investigated a lot more. Too many lefties wanted him dead.

Anonymous Legallyspeaking July 29, 2015 6:52 PM

P.S. This is the LA Times don't forget---who, in 2008, refused to release footage of Obama and a terrorist at the same fundraiser together---because it didn't want to hurt Obama's chances.

So they are just a propaganda arm.

So this reason for firing Rall seems very trumped up; maybe Rall was hurting Dear Leader too much with his criticisms, and the Times is using this as a hand excuse.

No credibility.

Blogger epobirs July 29, 2015 7:29 PM

Give it a year and Rall will be back. The LA Times has done this before, most recently with utter douche Michael Hiltzik. He was busted for sockpuppeting by Patterico and 'fired.' Extended vacation is more like it.
