GK sends the word of a DC-area Puppies meetup:
Saturday, July 11th
8-10 PM
Rock Bottom Brewpub
Ballston Commons Mall (Lower Level)
Arlington, Virginia

All Sad Puppies and Rabid Puppies welcome. We don't particularly care which flavor of Puppy Supporters show up. The Browncoats flag will be flying.
If you're interested, get your bark on. And if you carry Glock, be prepared to be mocked! (Says the man who still kind of misses his G23.)

Excellent. This VFM plans to join...

Is it legal to carry there? I'd expect the meeting to attract the enemy.

Great news. I will certainly be there.

I'll be there. Time for a little badfun.

Does anyone have any details they can share about Ilkmoot? I've seen it mentioned a few times, but haven't seen a lot of info.

I could make it this weekend but not next.

DC is just outside of my driving range for this.... though it's tempting to haul my butt up there 8 hours and find a place to crash to meet up.

Anonymous Jourdan July 01, 2015 8:47 PM

@MidKnight - Let's keep a running list here of where people would be coming from and we can see what we can do about carpooling, training in, perhaps people could even chip in a little bit for tickets.

It's vital that we meet up in real life.

Ballston is on the Orange metro line as well, so if you can get to anything that feeds into Wash Metro, like the Marc trains for example, it could be a lot easier as well.

I'm also happy to host anyone who needs to crash, though my stuff is still in shipment and my new apt is pretty damn empty.

Anonymous coastie.com July 01, 2015 8:49 PM

You know that is a Coast Guard Officer bar, right?

Blogger dlw July 01, 2015 8:56 PM

> 8 hours

I'd sneer "Wimp!" but I'm not up for long drives any more, either.

Why not set up your own meet-up to happen at the same time and connect the two? A few laptops and webcams and you don't even have to be on the same continent, much less in the same bar.

Vox's post inspired me to wonder about whether it's legal to own firearms in Italy. Does this appear altogether accurate? (it's wikipedia so as a lawyer I don't trust anything I read on it though it can be helpful for quick info.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics_in_Italy
And yes, Bro. Longtail has become Bro. Mulder. (I rightly feel a fool explaining and attempting to justify why I would alter a pseudonym so feel free to mock!) Longtail is Bermuda's national bird (I'm from Bermuda) but I recently re-watched the X-Files on Netflix and while much of the X-Files is gloriously bad, I really do like the personality of the character that is Mulder. I like that his defining characteristic is a crusader for Truth no matter what the personal cost. I just hope he doesn't turn out to be an SJW…though I'm not going to lose any sleep over speculating what a fictitious character's politics might be.

And I do think that a tiny percentage of UFO sightings are yet to be explained and so keep an open mind...

Blogger Bro. Mulder July 01, 2015 10:07 PM

By the way, since I've ended up bring it up (but it's not on subject so feel free to dismiss it - I appreciate the Rules of the Blog), have you ever talked about UFOs? I know William Lane Craig (sorry about the name-dropping) and asked him, as a believing Christian apologist (I am one too), why we should give more credence to 2000 year old witness rather than the handful (and it is a handful, but it only takes one true account) of military personnel that have testified to having actual encounters with strange crafts that are physical, able to move beyond current air flight capabilities etc.? Leslie Keane's book does a good job of documenting the most credible cases. Bill Craig dismissed it with a hand wave, saying that aliens could never traverse the vast distances but, as much as I have vast respect for him, that struck me as a failure of imagination, given that our planet has supposedly had six extinction periods. What if another planet hadn't and had evolved creatures that had had more time to figure out the physics?

Sorry, it's totally off-topic, but I did just want to ask the question and get your thoughts if possible.

Are UFOs for or against SJWs?

Blogger Bro. Mulder July 01, 2015 10:27 PM

zen0 - "Are UFOs for or against SJWs?"

I hope we can safely assume that they've already purged the SJWs from their ranks. They are supposed to be vastly superior to us, after all. I can't see them figuring out the hard science if they've still got feminists around claiming mathematics is sexist and a product of patriarchy!

Space cadets. Show up unannounced and unwelcome. Disturbing appearance. They tend towards probing and the fondling of the junk. Monotonous M.O. And they disappear in the blink of an eye.

Answers itself, really.

Blogger kh123 July 01, 2015 11:12 PM

(...W.L. Craig's YEC, from what I remember. Would figure he's not going to be that impressed by multiple extinction scenarios.

Also, Keane seems to lean a bit towards the SJ wankery. Look at who forwards the book, for fox sakes.)

Rock Bottom Brewpub - Arlington

Did they build that on Marse Robert's property as well??

Blogger Bro. Mulder July 02, 2015 12:03 AM

kh123. WLCraig is not a Young Earther and is on record as pissing off quite a few by calling YEC an intellectual embarrassment. He's a Progressive Creationist, which is perhaps not as easy to define as caricaturists would like it to be. (not passive aggressively saying you are, not making the point that some people will do this)

I don't know Keane's SJW politics, but it doesn't necessarily refute the published testimony of her subjects.

I agree, though, that UFOey people tend to be rather annoyingly liberal. It annoys me because it undermines any attempt to get at what's going on and yes, can make one sceptical of witness testimony. It seems to me that there is enough evidence to suggest that in a small fraction of cases that something real and very strange is going on, but yes, there's an awful lot of Star Trek progressive romanticism mixed in that makes a study of the phenomenon especially tedious at times.

Blogger Bro. Mulder July 02, 2015 12:12 AM

I know Vox doesn't like people writing back to correct typos because he has faith in the Ilk being able to spot them, but, since we commentators (kh123) don't know each other online yet, if he'll permit it,could I please correct my above typo - the second 'not' in the bracketed sentence of the first paragraph was supposed to be 'just'. I only ask to allow for this correction because that sentence was a direct statement to kh123 and I don't want to unnecessarily cause rancour. I'm perfectly capable of doing that with the things I mean to say!

Blogger luagha July 02, 2015 12:48 AM

On UFOs-as-aliens: Some sizeably stated quantity of the evidence out there is deliberate misinformation by the US intended to set the Russians on wild goose chases.

Another sizeable quantity of the evidence is used as a weeding-out process for military intelligence recruits - if you pay too much attention to it and it becomes an obsession, you serve out your military intelligence time and get let go.

Another sizeable quantity is that even experts can be fooled, sometimes easier than fools.

Is there anything left? I don't know. I do know that a lot of SETI events that we've captured that look really incredible turn out to be a particularly leaky microwave oven four miles offsite because the instruments are so delicate. That doesn't explain them all, but.

Blogger Bro. Mulder July 02, 2015 1:13 AM

Luagha,

You've summed it up well. There's an incredible amount of misinformation, hoaxes and honest mistakes out there.

I look at it, though, like a miracle. It only takes one to prove that they're genuine. I've read some stuff that persuades me to at least keep an inquisitive mind about it, and admittedly (which is something a lot of UFOey people don't want to admit), my imagination keeps me hoping that it will one day be vindicated. That's why I like 'Fox Mulder'. At least he admits that he wants to believe. Maybe ETs, maybe demons, maybe something else, but some mark of the paranormal. So that's why I casually stay abreast of it and take it relatively seriously when a credible military-type person, not pissed on beer and wearing a logger's shirt, says he's had a close encounter….nothing against loggers of course….

Not to entertain this any further than an OT allows, but...

"I don't know Keane's SJW politics, but it doesn't necessarily refute the published testimony of her subjects. "

I don't know either, but she goes into full journo mode in a few spots, especially with the O'Hare Airport sighting. Given she's likely not an expert in the meteorological, a more evenhanded approach was needed here, especially when her rhetoric contrasts with that of the French contributors. Which is saying something.

Barring the fact that she brought the eyewitnesses together to try to make a cohesive bit of investigation, she's the one aspect that brings the book down.

"I don't want to unnecessarily cause rancour."

Besides folks being able to suss out intent, you'll find some pretty hard bark around here.

yeah, but they're competing against the People's Republic of Ohio ( which also has plenty of Pennsylvania Dutch ).

you'd think a little of that good ol German desire for Ordnung and Plain Living would show through and they'd be a little embarrassed..

OT, kinda (guns and VA were mentioned in the OP). My husband wants to buy me a gun for self-defense. I'm petite (small hands), over-50, and non-agressive by nature and somewhat jumpy - and female (gotta define that these days). Recommendations?

"I don't want to unnecessarily cause rancour." - hard bark etc. Yep. I'm being exceedingly polite at the moment, not fakery or anything against you, just getting my feet wet. If friends on my Facebook saw this they'd never guess it was me. I can woof pretty loud too. But UFOs is not a topic I'm going to werewolf out over because, as you point out, the evidence is a mixed batch at best and a fervent advocate could look very silly very quickly. I'm a Christian first and foremost also, so I speculate whether some of the more credible stuff is actually demonic in origin rather than extraterrestrial. You clearly read the book! I gave it away a while back, but now I want to seek it out again to re-read those sections on the O'Hare incident that you pointed out. Cheers mate, and nice flying with you!

Blogger luagha July 02, 2015 10:34 AM

What have you trained with and shot so far, Iowahine?

When I teach women, I start with .22lr, which is loud but light. It's for training, first, and everyone (save perhaps those with disabilities) should be able to handle it.

Strangely, then I try a 1911 model in .45 once the student has the basics. The 1911 model has a slim enough grip for people with small hands to hold it. The .45 target ammo has a slow, fat bullet which makes the recoil more like a 'push' than a 'crack'; and the somewhat heavy pistol will help soften it. And third, the design of the 1911 is mentally iconic and the student will have seen it in many movies and TV shows and that makes it naturally easier.

That, too, is just for learning though - because a full-size 1911 pistol may be a little much to carry day in and day out. But once you know you can fire it, your option list is huge.

Blogger Iowahine July 02, 2015 10:46 AM

luagha - I shot over two decades ago, pistol at a range; don't know what it was. I'm a blank slate. Primarily, would probably keep at home; another, maybe later, to carry. I held a couple small Baretta's recently. Liked the feel of heftier one, felt more stable. Did not shoot. Thanks for your input.

Blogger Giraffe July 02, 2015 11:37 AM

Iowahine. I would recommend the Ruger LCR. It is simple, it is light, it is not too expensive. I'd recommend the .357 mag version. It may be more than you can handle, but you can shoot .38 specials in a .357 magnum, so it gives you more versatility.

Tickets ? No tickets. But we would appreciate a headcount, preferably on the Fecesbook event, but the EventBrite link works as well. After all, it's impolite to surprise an innkeeper with a huge mass of people, without giving them the opportunity to have sufficient help on-shift. . .
