The built-in bias of Wikipedia

I've commented before on how the editors at Wikipedia doggedly turn every article about a left-leaning public figure into a defense case, while every one about a right-wing figure is prosecutorial in nature:
Neil Tyson, a prominent popularizer of science (he even has his own television show) was recently found to have repeatedly fabricated multiple quotes over several years. The fabrications were not a one-off thing. They were deliberate and calculated, crafted with one goal in mind: to elevate Tyson, and by extension his audience, at the expense of know-nothing, knuckle-dragging nutjobs who hate science. Tyson targeted journalists, members of Congress, even former President George W. Bush. And what was their crime? They were guilty of rejecting science, according to Tyson.

There’s only one problem. None of the straw man quotes that Tyson uses to tear them down are real....

After I published my piece about Neil Tyson’s fabrication of the George W. Bush quote, several users edited Neil Tyson’s wiki page to include details of the quote fabrication controversy. The fact-loving, evidence-weighing, ever-objective editors of the online encyclopedia did not appreciate the inclusion of the evidence of Tyson’s fabrication. Not at all.

According to a review of the edit history of Tyson’s page, one long-time Wikipedia editor deleted an entire pending section summarizing the issue of Tyson’s fabricated quotes. Another editor attempted to insert a brief mention of Tyson’s fabrication of the George W. Bush quote. That mention was also deleted. When it was reinserted, it was deleted yet again by an editor who describes himself as a childless progressive and an apostle of Daily Kos (h/t @kerpen).

Literally every single mention of Tyson’s history of fabricating quotes has been removed from Tyson’s Wikipedia page.
Meanwhile, the Wikipedia page about me contains more about NK Jemisin and John Scalzi than it does about a professional career that has been covered everywhere from the New York Times to Computer Gaming World, casts doubt on my heritage, and reduces my entire personal life to two of the four languages I speak. I mean, at the very least, you'd think they'd mention that I speak English, that my blog is the most highly trafficked one in science fiction and fantasy, or my son is the youngest male author ever published.

But, of course, anything that might reflect well on me, or poorly on Tyson, is something that the Wikipedia editors are determined to excise. And that's why you should never take anything you read on Wikipedia as anything but a starting point.

When I saw one of the Wikipedia commissars was a self-admitted schizo chick who pictured herself hiding underneath a blanket while demanding the rest of us subsidize her crazy ass, Wikipedia ended my trust in its authority.

This goes back under the banner of "I FUCKIN LOVE SCIENCE!". These SJWs only "love" science when it comports with their cherished beliefs, but when reality meets them head on, they predictably lie, obfuscate, and double-down to make the BadThink go away.

As far as Wikipedia is concerned, any socio-political stuff and anything related to Christianity is suspect to me. Other stuff like movies, videogames, some of the hard sciences, math, etc. that have their sources cited are still reliable since they're not under the neurotic of eye of the SJW.

Wikipedia is only good for a few things. Anything mildly political is going to be skewed, which at this point is nearly everything. Similar to what Vox says, it should only be use it to gain an (extremely) cursory knowledge of the topic of interest before going elsewhere to research. It only takes a few moments to memorize relevant names and terms--then just google the hell out of 'em. It's pretty easy to get a list of decent books on the topic within a few minutes.

Plus, with his pattern of just making #$%& up, I'd require confirmation on the Sagan story.

Well of course. George Washington Carver is getting a bit dated. Ever since he invented the magic peanut, black scientists have been thin on the ground, whereas the usual culprits for advancing human knowledge continued apace doing everything from inventing computers and investigating atomic particles and landing on the moon.

Why consider this, between magic black scientist number one and magic black scientist number two, whites not only flew, but have sent a satellite 132 AU away from earth. If they have to jettison Tyson, goodness knows how long it will be until another candidate pops up.

As long as he doesn't pull a Cosby and do anything stupid like tell black people they have agency over their own livelihoods, he can expect the full support of the left until his dying day.

Reminds me of: Climategate: the corruption of Wikipedia

The "featured" wikipedia editor and green party member, who created or rewrote 5000 unique Wikipedia articles on global warming, is still fully going at it!

Undoing things in the "Climate change denial" entry even as of today! What a joke.

Then there’s this hefty defense of Tyson’s fabrication:

"Ok, he slightly misquote a moron (GWB), doesn't matter, science is still real!"

And another:

"At this point I don’t have a problem with *any* slandering of GWB."

It's like when El Rushbo is intentionally "misquoted" almost every week, and when called out the response is yes but still. We know that Rush & GWB are evil in our hearts so it doesn't matter.

But i guess those editors need something to do until the mother-ship arrives...

From "The Z blog": deGrasse Tyson is a Clown

"I must admit I have zero interest in Neil deGrasse Tyson. He’s a magical ornament for the Cult and the fake nerds. He bills himself as a scientist, but he makes his living as an amusement park manager. That and doing the trained monkey bit on TV. There’s nothing wrong with it. Lots of people enjoy planetariums. Everyone loves TV and you can’t have TV without trained monkeys. But, it’s not my thing so I have not paid much attention to Neil deGrasse Tyson.

I get that his audience wants validation so they come to hear the magical black guy tell them they are the bestest. My guess is there’s not a single person in the audience that could count their balls twice and come up with the same number so that means he can’t actually talk about real science. It’s all theater, a morality play, of sorts. He mocks the bad people in the familiar way and they arf like seals at the right time. It’s the Jon Stewart routine, but with high school science as the straight man instead of politics."

This is how they describe climate-gate:

It get's better, RationalWiki on Gamergate:
"Supporters of the movement claim Gamergate is a "consumer revolt" concerning "ethics in video game journalism" and they are fighting "collusion" and "corruption" by uncovering conflicts of interest. However, its members' actions are dominated by misogyny, anti-feminism, and paranoia over creeping "social justice warrior" (by which they mean liberal) influence in the gaming world."

"The thing that surprises me about this video is just how buffoonish he is during his act. The time or two I’ve caught him on TV he was pretending to be a serious scientist, but in that video he one step from dropping his pants and spraying his junk with seltzer. It’s rather embarrassing to watch, particularly since the premise is so absurd. If I did not know better, I’d think he was cleverly mocking the rubes in the audience."

Afaik, all of the alleged sciences are corrupted by the 'SJWs' to one degree or another. Mathematical physics is a case in point, having degenerated to a level where the 'sacred' equations are said to govern a Universe that must obey them, even though the actual math itself is in turn corrupt, multiple counts. Their belief is more primitive than that of the rune-caster, the entrails-diviner, or the Tarot reader: at least the latter kinds of shamans don't claim that Nature has to obey the diktats of the entrails or the cards.

11. guest,

Despite their careful appearances, Wikipedia was designed to be corrupt from the get. The long march entails seizing the command posts of society- communications in particular. There is apparently a standing army of civilization's traitors on call 24/7 to purge badthink from key Wiki articles. I witnessed in realtime as the Speed of Light and Centrifugal Force pages were re-edited and purged of Talk and edit history. These seemingly-benign subjects are crucial to mainstream's crank cosmology. which is a key component of their Cathedral/Church of the State.

Once you realize the scope of the campaign to control your world view, you can never see the mainstream media as anything other than a tool used to control the Narrative and cover up reality with complete lies and limited hangouts. Video games seem to be the last frontier not under their complete domination, which likely explains the SJW entryist campaigns of late. Can anyone imagine a political correct version of GTA? LOL

Blogger Cail Corishev July 11, 2015 8:20 AM

The bias affects more than the obviously controversial topics, too; and the problem is you never know where it'll turn up. You might think a page on a 30-year-old piece of computer hardware would be apolitical enough to be safe and simply contain the facts. And that might be the case. But if there's a wiki editor who has a bone to pick about it for some reason, then he will skew the page with his bias, and he will sit on it and make sure no one corrects it.

Any page can be subject to this. Most aren't, because there are only so many SJWs and asspies to go around and they only have so many personal hobby horses. But the problem is you don't know whether that article you're reading on the methods of 17th-century German basket-weaving is one of them. You might be able to tell if you check the history and talk records for a page -- lots of edits reverted by one person would be a good sign -- but who's going to do that every time he wants to look up some mundane facts?

The problem is built into the system, because the only way you can get people to put in the kind of time it takes to build something as large and broad as Wikipedia is to let them make parts of it their little fiefdoms. No one's going to write and edit thousands of articles for free without some other incentive. So it's always going to attract the kind of people who want to rewrite reality in one way or another, and SJWs are at the front of that line.

Anonymous That Would Be Telling July 11, 2015 8:49 AM

Mr.MantraMan mentioned Cultural Marxists; it should surprise no one that recently the Cultural Marxism page was purged and replaced by a section on the Frankfurt School that begins like this: "A notable 21st-century conspiracy theory...".

Although in truth, based on books like Willing Accomplices: How KGB Covert Influence Agents Created Political Correctness and Destroyed America, it goes back further, to an Soviet Active Measures campaign that began in earnest after the #1 USSR foreign policy objective, US diplomatic recognition, was achieved in 1933. As I recall, the campaign ended in the usual Stalin purge style, around the time of the Fall of France, but by then its payload was well established and self-sustaining by the usual self-hating idiots and damaged people, and we can be sure the various members of the Frankfurt School were part of it. They were very possibly part of the campaign against the Weimar republic, you can see a lot in common there.

TroperA, if I want info about a work of entertainment, I check TV Tropes before Wikipedia. Seriously. By pushing the more opinion-based stuff to the sub-pages like YMMV and Headscratchers, they actually do a better job of keeping opinion and PC nonsense off the main pages than Wikipedia does; and non-PC statements are more likely to survive on those sub-pages.

Blogger LP 999/Eliza July 11, 2015 10:57 AM

Wiki is so poor, half-witted.

I request a response from wiki and their unaccounted for bias.

In wiki, I have to search 4 separate subtopics or more to garner a more complete or full story of something I was researching. Wiki is not a trustworthy outlet for my uses. It might be ok for American public school kids 5th grade paragraph on a boring topic that bears zero value to reality.

Dark Souls and other games pulled away b/c wiki does not understand the game changes as does the info. One can buy a guidebook but its not really needed as updates and changes render some details/info old.

Moving on, Jealousy and Hatred is good energy.

Just like the Bitterness at wiki, strange haters whom hide in shadows pull disinfo stunts thinking we don't notice.

Cute, they swallow the poison and want the person they LIE and distort on to suffer. The attitude itself is old news happening to new people. Our gracious host who didn't do anything to result in such mistreatment is not alone.

Notice the most important part of the post, VD's boy is published, that is all that really matters here. Wiki is a on-going topic to expose, wiki is a failed distraction.

SJW's are the malleable and easily influenced among the masses. The cultural elites use them as storm-troopers in the "culture war" against the less malleable among the masses.

If the cultural elites began a 20-30 year social engineering project for cultural acceptance of pedophilia, those with "SJW" psychological traits would be the first to embrace the new contrived cultural paradigm. And those with skeptical anti-authoritarian traits would be the ones to resist.

Remember... in the "Culture War" (really top down social engineering), resistance IS victory.

Thankfully I have never donated to that hive of scum and villainy, but I have used the site extensively when researching subjects that are likely off the radar of the socio-political SJW. The articles on LotR are a good example of those that are well researched and reliable, but on the other hand, those about Tolkien himself are not, being that he is a poster child for white-male-hetero-christian-traditionalism.

Blogger Thucydides July 11, 2015 11:32 AM

The Wiki software i pretty ubiquitous and easy to use; why not turn it on the SJW's by creating a Voxipedia, or a Tysonpedia or whatever turns your crank. If you control the nature of the content and the editing policy, the SJW's will be unable to try and impose their reality on you.

So long as the articles are written in such a fashion they can withstand scrutiny from any lawyer seeking to claim libel or slander (simply pointing out the false quotes and the time/place/context they were uttered is a statement of fact, which is in itself not liable or slander) then you can place blockades of reality in the path of the SJW/Progressives and watch then smash their heads into the hard surface.

More fun than should be possible!

Blogger VFM bot #188 July 11, 2015 11:47 AM

This reflects a characteristic of the SJW disease: They never stop. It is central to their nature, like termites who never stop eating away.

This example also epitomizes SJW entryism. Wikipedia is in the process of being corrupted by SJW entrysts who by their nature always lie; its usefulness is correspondingly being degraded.

It would be humorous to see the Vile Faceless Minions unleashed in a project such as, "Go to the Neil Tyson entry at Wikipedia, every fucking day, for as long as it takes...YEARS if necessary, and make changes to the entry so it reflects the truth." If the Dark Lord ever made such an order, the process would almost certainly continue for years, for SJW's never stop purveying lies (in this case lies by omission).

The humor would come from this: Once unleashed, VFM's don't stop either.

What are they doing to the speed of light? Did they say a black discovered light?

The speed of light, c, has apparently changed a bit over the past couple centuries of measurement, similar to what happened to the gravitational 'constant', G, and to the international mass standard. The measured values have shifted more than the range of the error bars in various experiments. This was zeroed out, or rather swept under the rug, in 1984 by re-defining the meter in terms of so many wavelengths of an atomic transition (if I have the story right- David Tombe has the gruesome details). They can't have any variation of c without wrecking Einstein's alleged theory(s) of relativity, which in turn underpin moral relativity and multiculturalism: according to the SJWs themselves.
The other problem with c is its observed variation according to the motion of the observer, which of course completely destroys Einstein's relativity. None of these heresies are permitted by the Church of the State. Please don't report me.

The SJW's OODA loop on the SoL and Centrifugal Force Wiki pages was measured in minutes, btw.

They can't have any variation of c without wrecking Einstein's alleged theory(s) of relativity,-FB

Why would they worry about breaking Einstein's relativity when he stole it from an Italian scientist?

I'll have to report you for that.

Wikipedia is an SJW playground. I've noticed pretty much every Wikipedia page on every great literary figure of the past has a little blurb on whether the author was an "antisemite" or "racist" - I suppose that's to tell SJW's whether its permitted to like him or not. Did you know -according to wiki - that Hemingway an antisemite because one of the characters in "The sun also rises" was a Jew?

Good to read an affirmed unmentioned issue now mentioned; SJWs are linked to wiki via reader reactions.

Big Gay Steve - When GRapeRapeMartin lurks here any comment resembling a Dorito disappears. Neil Tyson explains the A-Hole gravity well effect.

Top kek, sir. Top kek.

VFM bot #188 - Can you authenticate?

Basically, contrary to all the planetarium-player haters above, Neil deGrasse Tyson is a badass motherfucker.

He's the Smoove B of Astronomy. More here.

Once I made an addition to Wiki's entry about Sen Robt Byrd, (D-WV) noting that the former KKK leader was the ONLY senator who voted against the confirmations of Supreme court nominees Thurgood Marshall (liberal) and Clarence Thomas (conservative). wikipedia explained that it was not NEUTRAL towards Senator Byrd. I responded that it was not INTENDED to be neutral- it was intended to point out Byrd;s RACISM.

Wiki has an article on him that includes of description of his political spectrum from his doctoral dissertation. It's wrong and he's tried on several occasions to change it. It get changed back, often within minutes.

When an honest man can't correct something about him, then wiki is useless. I don't even use it as a starting point unless there's nothing else.

At #60 that refers to Jerry Pournelle. Don't know how I dropped that.

Open sources makes the semi monopoly on wikipedia less effective compared to a 1984 Ministry of Truth setting.

The New York Times may have enjoyed such broad depth of mind control, but with 2-3 independent sources on the open field, wikipedia merely exposes their own propaganda innards to the serious analyst.

They should either white wash everything, or not mention anything important. Because people like me will figure it out even if they try to hide it, since the absence or presence of such efforts is a tip.
