When fraud becomes fiction

It appears the global warming charlatans are getting desperate:
The measured US temperature data from USHCN shows that the US is on a long-term cooling trend. But the reported temperatures from NOAA show a strong warming trend. They accomplish this through a spectacular hockey stick of data tampering, which corrupts the US temperature trend by almost two degrees. The biggest component of this fraud is making up data. Almost half of all reported US temperature data is now fake. They fill in missing rural data with urban data to create the appearance of non-existent US warming.
It's been interesting. We've actually had a rather hot summer over here in Europe, and yet none of the usual suspects have tried to connect it to global warming. That tells me that they know the jig is up, and it's only a matter of time before even the die-hards like NOAA stop lying about it.

And presumably it won't be long after that before they'll be shrieking about the coming Ice Age and how that means we must accept global government. They're kind of one-trick ponies, aren't they.

They tried the ice age thing in the 70's. The ozone holes in the 80's and 90's. And dying polar bears and global warming after.

They are lying sacks of crap. Of course they will go back to the ice age scare tactics.

The planet is so dumbed down and drug addled, why not?

It will work every time.

Blogger Tiny Tim July 28, 2015 3:17 PM

Look, GHW Bush led the war on drugs for Reagan and was smuggling drugs and money with Bill Clinton in the 80's. A guy in Houston can get busted for a joint while our military guards opium poppy fields in Afghanistan then distributes the heroin across the world.

Of course they are going to lie about the temperature if they think they can make $5.

We arm Al Queda... we arm Isis... we sent China all of our industry... we bankrupted our nation... we drug our children... we kill babies in the womb all day long and sell the body parts... we have developed a medical system that kills us... we put hazardous waste in drinking water and tell people it is for healthy teeth... we sell "food" in stores that isn't food... we infect soldiers with syphilis... we kill civilians in foreign countries by the boatload all day long...

Lying about the temperature seems pretty tame.

Most PHD scientists who study climate change concede that they have no way of proving that anthropic warming is real . The liberal media is spinning a narrative that there is a scientific consensus when no such consensus actually exists. The media is like the rotten tomatoes voting system where a 51% is considered a 'good review' , ignoring all the gradations.

Blogger wrf3 July 28, 2015 3:37 PM

here for one way NOAA fudges the data:

You see what's going on. The warming trend indicated by the buoys – a project that was specifically designed by scientists to measure the temperature of the ocean – was completely erased by Karl et al. The time series was detrended and the trend was replaced by another trend extracted from a different source, one that wasn't meant to measure temperatures scientifically. Great.

Actually the climatologists of the 1970s were probably more on the right track than those of today, despite having technology that was primitive by comparison. Why? Because instead of obsessing over what man was doing, they were obsessing over what the sun was doing. You know: that big yellow ball in the sky that may have some miniscule effect on our climate. What the sun does totally trumps what humans do. Get ready for the next Ice Age.

Blogger Quadko July 28, 2015 3:57 PM

Probably the biggest reason they haven't switched yet is even the most oblivious propagandized school child, when confronted with "no wait, now we have a cooling problem" will react with "let's burn more hydrocarbons!" and "Sell the Hybrid Prius, buy an SUV Surburban!", and "only evil people avoid gas guzzlers" because "everyone knows" that fossil fuels cause the warming that will fix any such cooling. They can't exactly complain "but that doesn't meet our ulterior motive needs of political power and peasant suffering and poverty!"

I've never heard anyone talk about it, but I was curiously reading up on Venus lately (because of reading Heinlein Juveniles again), and the "super hot and 98% carbon dioxide" facts discovered in the 90's made me wonder if there was any link to AGW crowd? Yet given their political nature, that's probably giving them way too much credit.

I still remember the one specific thing that absolutely tipped me over the edge from being a, I guess you would call it "lukewarmer" -- I believed in the sincerity and the expertise of the scientists who claimed human industry was making a significant contribution to global warming, and that the disaster scenarios they forecast were likelier than one should be comfortable with, even if I was dubious about the efficacy and practical feasibility of favoured solutions -- into being an actual skeptic, specifically of the people involved in the cause.

It was the response of Phil Jones, of the East Anglia Climate Research Unit, to someone who had requested a look at some of the raw data the CRU had used for its forecast models. Jones refused the request and told the person (I don't remember who it was, it may even have been Steve McIntyre or Ross McKittrick): "Why should I share this data with you, when your goal is to find something wrong with it?"

That one remark flipped me irrevocably over into the "skeptic" camp, because it was a complete and total contradiction of everything science is supposed to be about: the whole point of sharing data as a scientist is to see if someone else can find something wrong with it. The only time a scientist ever refuses to share data is when he has a political or economic investment in how that data will be used. That doesn't prove such data is, ipso facto, false, but it certainly skews my willingness to rely on it when public policy is on the line.

How is it possible people are still taking global warming seriously in 2015.

Depends which people you mean.

Do the self-anointed Defenders of the Warming Faith believe in CAGW? Do Al Gore and Barack Obama and James Cameron and Prince Charles truly believe the the oceans will engulf us and our children will melt and disgruntled polar bears will migrate south and rape us if we don't stop flying in planes and living above peasant-level subsistence?

Do they fuck. Al Gore bought an $8m seaside mansion in California. James Cameron owns a string of mansions, a ranch, a helicopter, a yacht, a fleet of submarines, and a Humvee. Obama doesn't travel anywhere without his presidential jumbo jet, his helicopter, and his 20-SUV motorcade. Prince Charles owns six palaces and mansions, flies around the world - first class, naturally - to lecture people about their carbon footprints, and wags his royal finger at common people, telling them to stop using cars while he himself owns a fleet of Jaguars, Range Rovers, and Aston Martins.

Though to be fair, he does sometimes ditch the car: he recently travelled 80 miles by helicopter because he couldn't be arsed with traffic.

So no, the big greens obviously don't believe it, with the possible exception of Charles, who might simply be a moron.

What about the chief priests of global warming scientism, the James Hansens and Michael Manns? They probably do believe, in the manner of zealots throughout history. Had they been born in another time and place they could easily have sacrificing people to their gods, or gleefully ordering the liquidation of the kulaks.

That mankind is a sinful stain on Mother Gaia, sure to face judgement unless we repent our economic progress, is an idée fixe with their type. Having already divined The Truth, for them no intellectual contortion is too perverse, no torturing of data is too cruel and unusual, and no breathlessly imparted prediction of climate Ragnarok is too window-lickingly retarded in the service of The Science (peace be upon it).

They are like magic 8-balls where every answer is "climate change!'

Then you have the vast majority of greenies, who fall into a number of different camps. The "I fucking love science!" crowd. The unwashed white people with dreadlocks gang. The Prius-driving manginas. The urban hipsters who'd starve to death within a fortnight if they weren't coddled by modern technology and industry.

What these folks have in common, apart from being hard of thinking, is that most of them have an overpowering need to demonstrate their virtue, in whatever way best accords with the mores of the day.

Asking them to change their "beliefs" based on facts and logic is pointless. You might equally ask why, in 2015, they can still profess to believe that "diversity is our greatest strength", or why they believe in feminism, or why they believe in any of the other ideological dangleberries sticking to the arse-fur of Western civilisation.

It doesn't matter whether the prole greenies are sincere or not because they're Duckspeakers, who will solemnly repeat whatever received wisdom they're told by college professors or TV talking heads or syndicated columnists.

Man is not a rational animal. He is a rationalising animal.

If there was money, power, prestige and satisfying opportunities for moral posturing in declaring that we must Save The Leprechauns, there'd soon be a UN task force on it, Obama would practice his serious face while delivering speeches on why we need Leprechaun quotas, cynical universities would entice gullible students to get into debt studying leprechaunology, Al Gore would make a sombre documentary on the fate of King Brian from Darby O'Gill and the Little People, and millions of mouth-breathing dullards would put a shamrock on their Facebook and Twitter profiles because, like, let's show we care!.

In summary, what this planet sorely needs is an invasion of cannibal space-horses.

About climate “science” and other frauds…

As Vox wrote, as a matter of public policy, science can only be trusted at the point when it becomes engineering. If you cannot build a simple machine or a simple physical object out of the scientific principles that you are expounding, then, chances are, those physical principles are wrong.

The same applies to climate science. Forget about arguing the various points and counterpoints in the debate. Think along simple, practical terms: climate science deals with the creation and testing of statistical models for predicting climate change. Think of how useful something like that would be to all kinds of businesses, everything from agribusiness to trading firms. Wouldn’t a company like Cargill or Archer Daniels Midland employ droves of climate scientists to help them with calling growing seasons correctly, so they know when to plant and when to harvest for optimizing crop yields? Wouldn’t Goldman Sachs have climate scientists on payroll to construct trading models for every commodity on the planet? Wouldn’t natural disasters like hurricanes, droughts, and heat waves be prepared for much better if climate scientists could predict their approach in a more useful way. Yet, you don’t see climate scientists employed in any other area except government. Why is that? I doubt climate science has a better handle on the climate than does the Farmer’s Almanac.

Then there’s the supposed interest of oil companies vs. climate scientists, as if oil is some evil, alien sludge imported from another dimension just to make white people rich. Oil, in fact, powers the world economy. If the oil suddenly disappeared tomorrow, then we would all be killing each other in the streets within a few weeks. If climate scientists disappeared tomorrow, then nobody would notice. To equivocate between a useful human endeavor and something that resembles a fraud is the height of folly.

Frankly, the only thing climate scientists are interested in doing is withholding energy from people.

i want volcanoes next time around

Maybe its just the increased global connectedness of modern communication but it seems to me there has been more volcanic activity in the last few years than in my, admittedly short, lifetime.

The history of this planet seems to be, on average, far colder than what we enjoy today. A sudden, enduring cold snap is one of the theories for what started the Mongol hordes reaving.

Two weeks ago we had snow in Australia in places it had never snowed before on record. In NSW all the roads across the range were closed briefly due to ice and snow.

An ice age, especially one not caused by man, does not require big government intervention. Surviving harsher winters and lower temperatures requires preparedness, self reliance and adaptability - the very traits all Western governments want to rid their people of.

How can you push centralisation and globalisation when ice age conditions make localised production, co operation and power generation; in short decentralisation, the obvious thing to do?

Were there a conspiracy to use a looming global disaster to push for one world government then the threat of an ice age would work against that goal.

" How is it possible people are still taking global warming seriously in 2015. "

My theory is that Leftists never wake up not because they are stupid nor because they are evil but merely because the question of whether a "narrative" is true or false bores them and fills them with ennui.

Political Correctness means judging stories on how efficient they are as propaganda.

Truth never enters their mental system at any point.

Truth is merely irrelevant to them.

We keep arguing to them about whether global warming truly exists or truly does not exist, and they merely blink at us with owlish, stupid, dull looks on their brutal faces, uncomprehending, because to them it is like asking if saying please and thank you is 'true'.

Saying please and thank you is not true or untrue. It is merely polite, an accepted formality.

Likewise, here, to them, expressing loyalty to the Global Warming faith is merely polite, a matter of accepted formality.

Asking a Leftist to react to a fact, and to recant a false theory once it is proved false is like asking a eunuch to get an erection. He cannot do it. He lacks the equipment to perform the act and lacks the mental and physical ability to desire to perform the act.

When, if ever, has anyone on the Left ever for any reason condemned or denounced or recanted a false theory once it was proved false?

Even issues over fifty years old -- the Ukraine famine, the Hiss/Chambers case, the Rosenbergs atomic spying case -- has any Leftist ever admitted wrong?

Has any Leftist ever admitted that Senator McCarthy was entirely correct in his accusations? That the people he and his committee investigated actually were, in fact, paid agents of the Soviet Union?

I live in Georgia(USA), and it is hot. It is also July. If it was cold...I would be crapping my pants.

The Left isn't against all prosperity, only your's, peasant!

When we all humbly accept our places and serve our betters, then the Left will be satisfied......

The thing is, cold is actually dangerous. Old people die from it directly, younger prople starve. A warmer world, otoh, is a better world.

So which one are the saviours of mankind angsting over?

To ask is to answer.

"Asking a Leftist to react to a fact, and to recant a false theory once it is proved false is like asking a eunuch to get an erection. He cannot do it."

Kind of sad, when you think of it. It does comport with my experience of them, though. Remember the 100's of millions who died of famine in the '80s? Me either. How about the acid rain that killed all the fish in all the lakes? Me either. How about the ozone hole that destroyed life for millions? Me either. Decade upon decade upon decade of lies. I remember.

" How is it possible people are still taking global warming seriously in 2015. "

My theory is that Leftists never wake up not because they are stupid nor because they are evil but merely because the question of whether a "narrative" is true or false bores them and fills them with ennui.

That's a pretty good theory as far as it goes. I'd substitute "True Believer" for "Leftist", as these kinds are found throughout history and in every political clime. They are the stuff armies are made of. We're trying to reverse engineer a type of mind, to figure out what makes it tick. These types might comprise the bulk of the current world population. Why does the narrative take precedence over the truth for them? Is it a desire to fit in? A desire to wish the world were otherwise? A desire for self-annihilation? A desire to follow the leader... right over the cliff? Is it fundamentally an economic calculation? It's cheaper not to rock the boat. Havel spoke to this.

Truth never enters their mental system at any point.

Oh, it might from time to time, only to be chased out with the utmost vigor. Why is that? Is it the fear of death of identity? Fear of abandonment and estrangement from the herd? [Sidebar- a friend of mine, who used to teach calculus, relayed his experience of the past day, after reading the Mathis paper I pointed him to. He was sad and angry that he had misled his students with tall tales of infinitesimals, yet also appreciated the revelation. By extension some fraction of SJWs can and have come to their senses.]

And they keep thinking they can "vote" for alleged Presidents, too. Substantial portions of the hominid races are simply unable to think in an independent fashion- not surprising. Nothing is going to change that fact, but some at the edges wake up from time to time.

"As Vox wrote, as a matter of public policy, science can only be trusted at the point when it becomes engineering. If you cannot build a simple machine or a simple physical object out of the scientific principles that you are expounding, then, chances are, those physical principles are wrong"

VD may have very well wrote that but he was wrong... we engineers appreciate the great faith that is shown in us here but if we limited what we call real science to only that which can then result in a simple machine or even a complex one whole areas of very real science would be dismissed... its a silly statement that I am sure VD did not mean to be interpreted this way because he is simply too well read to beleive this....

@49: "The Evil League of Stevil is not a tin-hat conspiracy theory!"

Am I evil? Well, I haven't earned it here -- I know my weaknesses -- but I will certainly be called evil by many I know if they ever realize that I don't consider Vox the sum end total of all moral iniquity. So I may as well accept it.

Fairness requires me to acknowledge that I am probably closer to the Grima Wormtongue model than to Sauron, or even Saruman, sadly. But, you know, evil is evil, and Brad Dourif got at least one chilling scene with Eowyn in the movie.

There is lots of space between "trusting" science and "throwing out" science.

Like Trotskyi, the Left seems to have forgotten who he was.

Eh, I had an exchange with a Lefty where he wanted Pinochet in the Top 10 list of Murdering Tyrants.

I pointed out that Pinochet was orders of magnitude behind the Socialists/Communists in his list.

Accepting his ranking as true, he believes Socialist/Communist lives matter more than others by several orders of magnitude.

until you can build a machine to test it, you have no verifiable results and, thence, NO SCIENCE.

hypothesizing is just a fancy way of saying, 'wild assed guess' and gets you results like Marx claiming to be able to 'scientifically' predict the future.

Groot @72 It doesn't matter because humans ran out of fossil fuels in the eighties. And all starved due to topsoil runoff. That's why I am talking to a tree only plants survived the CO2 apocalypse of 2012.

Nemo Maximus - I was hoping for 12-foot piranha bees or a mutant star goat.

Let's not get too hung up on the details. The tent of the Evil Legion of Stevil is a big one, with enough room in it for a diversity of opinions and malevolent entities that defy human understanding.

As long as the alien monsters or unfathomable horrors from another dimension are willing to devour the living flesh of our enemies and poop out their bile-bleached skulls, I see no reason to quibble over whether they're interstellar equines, giant toothy piscine insectors, or indeed terminator Teddy Ruxpins.

No wereseals though.

Elguapo - you do me a plethora of honours.

Cail Corishev - Dammit! Wish I'd thought of that.

Groot - I told you before. Join us!

Steve Brown - Thank you my fellow Steve.

"as a matter of public policy"

Because otherwise politics corrupts poor innocent science and seduces it into a 69, before switching things around and fucking science in the ass.
