A Latino, an Indian, and a White man

Walk into a room. How does NPR describe them? As three white men. Because badthink:
The prestigious Hugo Awards, which honor science fiction and fantasy writing, will be held Saturday. Lately, they have been given to more and more women and writers of color as the world of sci-fi opens up — and that's prompted a backlash from a group of mostly white male writers who call themselves the "Sad Puppies."
Listen to the rest of it here if you like, I'm not going to bother. The funny thing is that if you look at the original Evil Legion of Evil, it's not accurate to say it is a group of mostly white male writers.

Supreme Dark Lord: not white male
International Lord of Hate: not white male
Grand Strategikon: white male
King in Yellow: white male
Beautiful but Evil Space Princess: not white male
Token Liberal: white male

Of course, if NPR reported it accurately as a group that was "half white males", they couldn't realistically portray it as a Bad and Terrible Thing that Must Be Stopped.

The bartender asks, 'What'll you have?'

The aspie white nationalist returns and screams autistically, 'THEY'LL TAKE ONE RACIAL HOLY WAR AND A SIDE OF WHITE GENOCIDE TO GO!'

The two rednecks and a Rabbi kick the aspie out again before returning to their game of cornhole; while the new minorities sit down. The faint glitter of several golden Hugos briefly twinkles from their knapsacks.

Tribes and beliefs are a given.

In your acceptance speech I suggest you do a rain dance or smoke a peace pipe or electric non toxic e-peace-pipe and then declare yourself science fictionalist pure and true against all forms of racism - because they don't exist.. T minus 36, and counting.

Good to know automatthew. I was thinking of sending some to the file 770 commenters to keep them quiet for a while...but the books are obviously way too complex to accomplish that without tears.

"This coloring book is homophobic! I can't color outside the lines!"

"Crosswords express color far more effectively and with a greater level of difficulty than pigments."

"If the coloring book had simply asked us nicely to be published we would have politely told them no. They should quit while they only come with six crayons."

I listened to it so you don't have to. It was what you would expect. They left Vox out entirely. And just went with the anti-affirmative action angle. They used a well chosen clip from Brad to prove their point.

No. Generally the people we call Aspie have no idea and almost universally express shock and surprise that anyone would accuse them of such a thing... then they go into an awkward explaination of social events they attend which just ends up proving the accusation.

It wasn't that painful to listen to. NPR, National Palestinian Radio. There was a bit at the end of how people will meet at the Hugo Awards this year about how they will change the nomination process. I'm all for writers of all types getting a fair shake, that's fine, but Social Justice Warrior crap like "If You Were A Dinosaur, My Love" is worthy of only a bad soft core porn award, not an award for serious science fiction. Vox should attend the awards with a camera crew and film the proceedings, it'd be hilarious no matter what the results. What is the SJW crowd so upset about? All the Sad Puppies and Rabid Puppies did was play by (or legally game) the rules of how to get nominated that the Hugo Awards set up. Decades from now people all over the world will still be reading Bradbury, Asimov, Tolkien, Niven and Heinlein while the majority of SJW boors are long forgotten. Just because you're a so-called progressive doesn't make you a good storyteller.

Blogger Thucydides August 19, 2015 9:42 PM

The new Star Wars movie has a great possibility: "Use the Narrative, Luke!"

Frankly if Vox wins a Hugo, he should celebrate his native heritage by ritually sacrificing an SJW to the sun god right on stage. The visual of the still beating heart in his hand should end all questions about his ethnic origins, or sheer force of will, for that matter.....

NPR has been called out more than a few times for their staff being whiter than white. Basically its just a bunch of white liberals making other white liberals feel good."

It's white liberals making other white liberals feel good and preaching divershitty and then not actually living around it or being the first to move out of an area that gets too non-white (or "vibrant"). That's the key, say one thing, embrace divershitty, then do another thing, don't live around it.

Yes, NPR, it's incredibly white and it sometimes sounds so white I feel embarrassed listening to it. Shows like "Wait, Wait! Don't Tell Me!" Or "This American Life". So white. White in the sense of being corny, bland. Especially "Wait, Wait! Don't Tell Me!" More like "White, White! Don't Tell Me!"

I do like "This American Life" though, on occasion.

Apparently, a study was done on cadavers that determined that a modern man has about 81,000 calories worth of meat on them. Unfortunately, the study doesn't mention how fat the subjects were, but I'd recommend adding between 10k - 20k for your average landwhale.

Based on the typical 2000 calorie diet, I'd say you've got between 45-50 days worth from your average male feminist (probably 5-10 days less for female feminists).

I'd recommend a collection of her short stories. Let me see if I can find it. Nope, not anyplace on my bookshelf I can get to at the moment. Google to the rescue.

OK. I think there are three that are worth checking out: Orsinian Tales, The Compass Rose, and The Wind's Twelve Quarters. The Winds Twelve quarters has "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas", which I'd recommend to anyone.

Of her other works; The Dispossessed, The Left Hand of Darkeness, The Lathe of Heaven, and her EarthSea books are probably worth checking out.

Her politics and philosophy definitely affect her work in ways you may not like, but she is a wordsmith on par with the estimable Mr. Wright.

Earthsea yes, Left Hand no. It's not as fresh as it once was and a lot of it is just boring. Dispossessed is great, so is Lathe. My all-time favorite is City of Illusions, about a golden-eyed man seeking himself and finding something incredible, fighting the only true Le Guin villains, the Shing, in all their menacing fragility. She hates it, which after Four Ways and The Telling is a recommendation.

Blogger Eraser August 20, 2015 4:33 AM

Every human being has 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents and so on, and they can pick and choose among those according to convenience. Obama is half-black, half-white, but for the official narrative he is black. Zimmerman is half-white, half-"Hispanic", but for the media he is white.

So I guess a white SF writer can call himself non-white if he has a Mexican great-grandparent. Kudos to Vox for being consistent with his beliefs - he already self-deported.

By the way, talking about "Hispanic" or "Latino" as if it were a race seems to be an exclusively US thing. For the rest of the world, speaking Spanish is not a race. Latin America has everything from blue-eyed Europeans to African blacks.

"What, if anything, by Ursala Le Guin is worthwhile?"

I see the recommendations here are matching my own tastes. Good, good…

I my opinion early Le Guin’s hainish cycle is most entertaining and worth reading: Rocannon's World, Planet of Exile, City of Illusions, The Left Hand of Darkness. I especially liked the second: lost colony of humans living in almost medieval conditions must face migration or invasion of barbarians and is forced to ally with another less barbarous tribe. The last one – The left Hand of Darkness is interesting but not everybody may like planet of hermaphrodites. However the world-building was superb.

I would also recommend little known “The Beginning Place”. The pace is slow but I liked the mood ant the way the male protagonist changed: from fat slob to [spoiler deleted].

The rest you read on your own risk.

Anonymous HombreMallo August 20, 2015 7:00 AM

My family used to have fun all the time. We were at the beach once sitting around a fire when some locals asked us which tribe we were from. My aunt was about to answer, "choctaw" but my uncle grabbed her ankle and showed off the sooty sole of her foot.

What is it with the faggoty insistence on calling Vox by his real name?
----

They think they are his mom yelling at him using his full name.

Yeah, people throw around Indian but there are/were so many tribes - hundreds. They are not interchangeable in reality. Navajo are not Comanche. Comanche are not Lakota. Lakota are not Cherokee. Etc etc etc.

There were. For example, in what's now Kali-fornia there were dozens of distinct language-groups, often with widely varying cultures, beliefs, practices. The Modocs of the north differed from the Cahuillas of the south. Who were distinct from, say, various kin/language-groups around the Bay Area, which typically were docile under conditions of plenty. No need for snatching horses, no reason to raid or take food.

The SJWs of course, right up to President Barry-Town, believe they know LOTS about 'indians' when, as ever, they know almost nothing, and the little they do know is biased or just plain wrong. They don't want to study the Handbook of North American Indians, they want to read Rigoberta Menchu and watch fuzzy Kevin Costner propaganda. They act like Ingnorant Injuns.

"A Latino, an Indian, and a White man"

Hmm? You rang? Who said they were different men. And... why so sexist? :p

One internet apologetics guy I used to follow used a pseudonym (his birth name, before he was adopted) because he used to work on a maximum security prison.

"That's not even his real name!" was a favorite argument of his detractors for a long, long time.

Even after he got his name legally changed to his birth name / former pseudonym.

People.

Nate @34: "No. Generally the people we call Aspie have no idea and almost universally express shock and surprise that anyone would accuse them of such a thing... then they go into an awkward explaination of social events they attend which just ends up proving the accusation."

Lack of social awareness may be the only case where it is not kafkatrapping to use denial as proof of guilt.

Zaklog the Great @95: "I would advise against trying it. I'm pretty sure, apart from moral considerations, that the meat would not be safe. Between psychoactive drugs prescribed for various mental illnesses and those taken recreationally . . . yeah, you'd be taking some serious risks."

Well duh, of course you have to bring longpig up to a high enough temperature to denature any bioactive molecules, or in other words cook it thoroughly. But skip a feminist's brains; wouldn't want to risk prions from those mad cows.

Do I sound like a Vikings fan Bob? I'm in far worse shape, I'm a WVU grad. :(

But there's no reason not to be factually correct in your slams.
