Devs are pro-GamerGate

This interview with an anonymous AAA dev from a Sony studio expresses very much the same sentiments that I have heard from more than a few other devs in the industry:
TechRaptor: What do you think about GamerGate the movement? The things they tend to tackle—corruption, censorship—are those big industry problems from your point of view?

Developer: I have always seen Gamergate as a group of passionate people rallying behind the platonic cause for honesty and accountability. While the Gamergate movement did have a rocky start to begin with, I feel the Gamergate movement has become quite clear with its intended mission. The video game industry has always been both a global community and very tight-knit. Because of how close we are and that we are an entertainment-based industry, it does allow of nepotism and corruption when money is on the line. These are large problems that I feel any entertainment-based industry has. But, what is unique about the video game industry is that we have consumers willing to speak up and demand that we strive for a better way.

Unfortunately, there are individuals who don’t feel comfortable about changing how they do things, especially when it works out so well for them in the past and the present. To those who fight against Gamergate, I can understand the feeling when a large amount of people are saying how you do your job is wrong. Within the game journalism part of our industry, it does seem like the Wild West. Media companies will make deals and write articles that help them grow and keep their employees. However, that stubbornness or misguided grandstanding doesn’t improve the industry or game journalism as a whole. The corruption and censorship that Gamergate is fighting against is after years of such “deals” and how some game journalists have their ingrained mindsets. It is an uphill battle, but it needs to be done.

TechRaptor: Does that corruption impact your ability to create or put undue limits on your projects?

Developer: I am blessed to be in a position where it mostly doesn’t affect our work. We don’t make games so that a gaming website will like it. We make a game so that our fans will like it. In truth, our biggest and most important critics will always be the people that buy and play our game, not the journalists that cover it. However, we always look at reviews and how it is received. If a review is biased against us from an ideological standpoint instead of the content of the game, then that can theoretically cause unnecessary issues for future projects.

TechRaptor: Something that has come up a lot in recent months is the move towards political correctness, is that something that is considered a lot in AAA and taken seriously when making games?

Developer: Political correctness as an issue is mostly addressed on a project-to-project basis. I have seen projects that have bowed to the ideas of political correctness and others that have thrown caution to the wind. Regardless of the project, its has to be considered in some fashion. Ideally, a project can make systems and characters great enough that it doesn’t need hit against the political correctness attitude. In the projects I am been a part of, the political correctness has either been glanced over or it has tailored a project in some degree. Political correctness can become a balancing act, but an act we shouldn’t have to deal with. However, I have seen that affect the Indie scene alot more than the AAA scene. Political correctness has never stopped a project from making a great character or gameplay feature that I have been a part of, and it never should.
Political correctness and thought policing have NO PLACE in the game industry. Neither do SJWs.

Interesting, good article. Dev seems to have decent grasp of situation. But goes off on doxxing and nothing re bomb threats?

According to TechRaptor: "We held our interview the day after Airplay was over."

The dev mentions Airplay but no comment on bomb threats: "Now that SPJ Airplay is done and traction has been made, Gamergate needs to maintain its commitment to keeping game journalism honest and fair."

Dev on doxxing: "No more Doxxing. Period. It doesn’t matter what its trying to accomplish or who it is effecting, if you are for or against Gamergate. doxxing is a bane on the internet, and tangentially, our industry."

Entire doxxing comment: "Realistically, there is one improvement that we need to make in the online part of our industry: No more Doxxing. Period. It doesn’t matter what its trying to accomplish or who it is effecting, if you are for or against Gamergate. doxxing is a bane on the internet, and tangentially, our industry. The fear of being doxxed stifles the ability to speak freely, which is one of the greatest virtues of the internet. Doxxing is a tool to silence people and hurt their way of life, just because of an opinion. I have heard numerous arguments for Doxxing on both sides of the Gamergate controversy, ranging from how it “weeds out trolls on the internet” or how MovieBob said “I ‘believe’ that there is (almost) no such thing as a bad tactic – only bad TARGETS.” Doxxing is, and always will be, a bad tactic that should be shunned and punished severely. That fear is the reason why I am talking anonymously today. It is not only for the protection of myself, friends, and family, but also my company and my co-workers."

I'm not so sure about doxxing, Dave. SJW's are vicious power-seekers who use the power they crave to disrupt and destroy people's lives. They succeed in part because they can do it in safety. Doxxing removes that safety. If someone wants to destroy a Nobel Prize winner's career, or the career of a scientist like Matt Taylor, I want to know exactly who did it, how they did it, where they work, and where they live, so that I can repay the favor if the opportunity arises. It's only "fair," no?

Are not GGs overwhelmingly falsely accused of doxxing? However bomb threats on a GG event don't even merit mention?

Blogger SciVo August 17, 2015 9:00 PM

I'm torn on doxxing. On the one hand, I don't want to be doxxed until SJWs are an international laughingstock with no power to affect anyone's career for thoughtcrimes. On the other hand, it's not like they would ever honor a cease-fire -- since they have no honor -- so why the fuck not?

policing of any sort has to have some actual moral authority intrinsic to it....

where these people fall, and from Lenin to Mao to Barrack, its always the same is the rank dumbness of them wrapped up in quasi sophistication. Freud to Hillary dumb.

Anyone can put up with a coach, a police force, an expert if they are experts, are moral authorities, are right/ can improve your game, or write or sing or act like actual experts. If they make or write or perform stuff that is laudable.

Watched a brief doco called "what is time" put together by Professor in Physics Brian Cox. It was delightfully candid is summation admitting no-one knows - and that's coming from top cosmologists, mathematicians, string theorists, particle and quantum physicists, empiricists and theorists. Compared with all the sophomoric rank adolescent stupidity of SJW's Utopia's from global warming to gay marriage nirvana it was stunningly nice to hear actual front line experts saying "we don't know". cheers

Pretty good Snarky discussion over at leftwinging SF SIGNAL, Though the poster, Some writer chump named Anthony Vicino who obviously believes in open debate and not censoring voices(in a parallel universe) is already shutting down any differing voices so they can all clap hands together.

It was suggested to me that is any writer who isn't wise enough to defend the 1st amendment even if it's opposing views as long as the conversation hasn't boiled down to hurling slurs at each other should be taught their own medicine.

One suggestion being to negative vote their books on sites such as Goodreads. This being very appropriate as they silence a voice as negative without hearing what they had to say, therefore returning the favor in kind would balance things out and maybe teach the person a valuable lesson.

Do what thy Lettuce Wilt, Below I'll post my censored reply to a person who certainly should not walk away pretending he got the lasw laugh, when all he got was akin to say "I know you are" and then clamping ones hands over their ears.

Dear ASCIFIWRITER,

I stopped reading your hate speech at the beginning as soon as you stated black people need my approval to write SF(I never said it) so that means you are the only one who said it.

Therefore you are the Racist.

I know lots of POC, In fact I'm a minority of one, and I can tell you what they, X, Garvey etc hate the most and that is the condescending lying to themselves white liberal who pretends to champion and care more for their plight then there own.

White Uncle Toms only without any of the dignity part.

Yeah go peddle your own brand of bigotry and self loathing elsewhere, because when you pretend you are above it with me. Ill call out that hypocrite and closeted bigot in you.

And remember, we are supposed to be sad that the freaks attempt suicide at a higher rate.

Seems like they fit the female norm. They don't succeed too often.

Fight the power!

It's fun being a non-conformist.

Sigh. Just got home after working a 13 hour day, went by Wendy's to pick up some dinner, and found that they got the order completely wrong. One guess as to the demographic of the workers.

@9 That's probably just because society just HATES them so much. Shhh, don't read the testimony of post-ops who realized too late that it wasn't really what they wanted, but they'd been steeped for so long in a subculture telling them their previous existence was a horrible, horrible, terrible thing to endure and any way out is worth it.

Blogger Markku August 18, 2015 1:35 AM

Yes to Doxxing. They are not going to stop because it's the "bane of the internet". Only our side is interested in that kind of a thing. Doxx early, doxx often. Doxx with extreme prejudice.

Blogger Groot August 18, 2015 1:41 AM

I don't know. Steve has shown that graphical doxxing of the SJWs with enough mass to acquire their own orbital flotsam can be painful to our side, just aesthetically. The feelz, man!

Anonymous Giuseppe The Kurgan August 18, 2015 2:42 AM

I agree with Markku.
Sunlight is cleansing. Besides, there will not be peace until everyone can say just whatever the Hell they want without fear. At THAT point, you can then pick your friends and your enemies easily. Guess who will be short of friends once their true nature is exposed.

"It's fun being a non-conformist."

Become a Catholic. By conforming to Christ, we get to defy all the conformity of this world and all lower worlds. It's fun, and you can end up martyred by Jihadists, and hear your favorite saints and spiritual leaders, women like Mother Teresa of Calcutta, mocked by intellectual lightweights like lovable socialist drunk Christopher Hitchens -- and then hear what Leftwing comic book writers think of two thousand year old theological debates they cannot even begin to understand.

You have not be called a bigot until you are called a bigot by knownothings for saying love is better than hate, homosex is an abomination, marriage is sacred, contraception is sick, abortion is infanticide and euthanasia is a one-way ticket to hell.

If that is not nonconformist enough, at least be a pagan. Pouring out wine to your ancestors and killing a cow or two in reverence for the great and terrible gods is so much better than this politically correct ancestor hatred and vegetarianism, by respect for the poor, sad, melancholy and uncomplaining polytheists of old grows each year as it passes.

Why stop at paganism? Primitive animism is better. The postmodern post-rationals are so much less impressive even than neolithic cave dwellers. Those dudes knew how to nap flint and how to fight. I hear that half the male corpses dug up by archeologists from the stone age show signs of death from bludgeons or spears.

So be a nonconformist of some sort, from caveman to Christian! Anything is better than political correctness!

Aspiring misanthropes approve.

My mentor was an atheist who was deeply respectful of Christ and Christianity. "Always seek the truth and proclaim it," he said. "Christ did so, at the cost of arrest, torture, crucifixion, and death. Compared to what he did, the cost was trivial."

Anonymous Michael Scharrer August 20, 2015 9:51 AM

Makes sense, most devs know from personal experience how corrupt game journalism is.
