John Scalzi on #GamerGate

Because McRapey is due to start claiming that he's always been a gamer - in fact, he's a game developer who has written games - and claiming that he and #GamerGate were just joshing each other a little like him and John Ringo, that they're really good pals just like him and Larry Correia, any day now, I figured this particular Twitter rant should go on the record as the one-year anniversary of #GamerGate approaches.
Astounding the number of dudes who think a woman game developer being harassed has nothing to do with a movement founded to harass women.
    — John Scalzi (@scalzi) October 11, 2014

And yes, GamerGate was founded to harass women. We've all seen the IRC logs. Part of the plan: recruit others to be their useful idiots.
    — John Scalzi (@scalzi) October 11, 2014

And there sure have been a lot of useful idiots letting offering up their services to those who want to harass women! Well done, you.
    — John Scalzi (@scalzi) October 11, 2014

Face it, dudes: "GamerGate" is a toxic thing. You can't say you support WITHOUT explicitly standing with those who hate and harass women.
    — John Scalzi (@scalzi) October 11, 2014

Excellent post about GamerGate. "If you don’t step away… then you *are* part of a hate movement." http://t.co/IOB0nSiFJE
    — N. K. Jemisin (@nkjemisin) October 11, 2014

So stop standing with people who WANT you to be their useful idiots while they threaten women. You can't pretend you don't know anymore.
    — John Scalzi (@scalzi) October 11, 2014

You know. We know you know. EVERYONE knows you know. No one else buys into your denial. Just stop. AND repudiate. Stop being used. Simple.
    — John Scalzi (@scalzi) October 11, 2014

And if you refuse to stop being a useful idiot for those who harass and hate women, we'll know that too. And remember.
    — John Scalzi (@scalzi) October 11, 2014
#GamerGate is going to remember too, Johnny. Of course, it's hardly surprising that one SJW fame whore who has virtually no connection to the game industry would rush to take the side of corrupt SJW journalists and other SJW fame whores who have virtually no connections to the game industry.

It's no secret how actual devs feel about McRapey. But speaking of devs and game development, here is a screenshot from one of our games that will be released this fall. I expect seriously old school gamers will have no trouble identifying the original inspiration, as well as one of the new elements added.

It may interest you to know that while this particular project is a small one, it is a 100 percent Dread Ilk production. And to continue on to a second tangent, I should mention that another member of the Ilk is looking for a web developer.

I had an idea for a web business and I've had an acquaintance designing the program over the past year - he's become unreliable so I need to find someone.  It's a start-up and I'd like to find someone who's willing to design the software for an equity share in the company. The system was developed in .net framework (I think with ASP).  There may be a better way and I'm not committed to that platform.  If you know someone that may be interested in such an arrangement, please forward my email to them.

If you're interested in learning more about it, shoot me an email with WEB DEVELOP and I'll pass your email onto him.

What is the point really of these Twitter posts?

Maintain the approval of the rabbits in his warren by showing that he will fight the big bads for them. He needs to show that he isn't afraid of the big bads that terrify them.

It's also how he "debates" without risking being unmasked for the rhetorical incompetent that he is. He will never debate in any environment where he doesn't have the mute button and will be forced to answer questions.

Mr. Scalzi you liar!

John was never in the industry and gaming was never meant to demean or even about women.

Gaming; computers/console is about men (and this one or two women like me) just playing chess, tetris, RPGs set in varied eras, army/military gaming and even the hilarious versions of grand theft auto.

Gaming is about viewing the gifted creators of our generation creating amazing scenes. I'm no one, but even I am inspired to greater paintings thanks to OUR men.

The Dark Souls community has never mistreated me in any manner, we began with 2008's demonsouls to dark souls 1, 2 eventually DS3 (for ps4 release date TBD).

Never once, even though a lightweight lady gamer, was I ever demeaned. I reject Mr. Scalzi and his dribble lies.

Gaming is not involved in or with women aside from some characters or whatever.

Modern day gaming is about men of all ages relaxing with their computers, consoles or whatever, co-oping, taking down bosses, undoing puzzles, completing missions or attaining trophies.

Leave the men gaming in peace and quiet alone!!

Knock it off Mr. Scalzi, the men will create and game on minus you.

Anonymous Chainslaw August 13, 2015 9:51 AM

The parrot is clearly a derivative of Squawks the parrot from Donkey Kong Country games. The pirates are obvious derivatives of the pirates from Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest.

The new element added here is that the Kongs and Kremlings have been replaced with humans.

Swashbuckler. Very fun game. Also, for some reason, its graphics, controls and move list always reminded me of Aztec. I assume the new item is the parrot.

Aztec was made by the same guy and they even shared an Aztec warrior enemy. The parrot is indicative of the addition of a vertical element, so the High Parry actually has a purpose. It also adds to the difficult somewhat, as Swashbuckler only had low attacks from the rat, snake, spider, and scorpion.

We may do an Aztec homage at some point. It's a really good game despite the bugs.

I love it when he says, "dudes".

In retrospect I now realize the biggest reason why their SJW shaming tactics failed on us.

It was generational.

GamerGaters are purely Xers and Millennials.

For the first time we had a movement without conservative Boomers and Silents hobbling us at every possible turn. Constantly apologizing for us and then turning on the base of the movement.

No one was hamstringing us because they were afraid of what Walter Cronkite was going to say about us on the nightly news.

We didn't lose this one because we didn't have any of the usual suspects on our side to raise the white flag.

John Scalzi vs. Barbie, an objective comparison:

1. Video Game Development: tie
2. Lawn size: Scalzi
3. Car collection: Barbie
4. Dress Collection: tie
5. Looks better wearing the dresses: Barbie
6. Looks better not wearing the dresses: Barbie
7. Readily confused as a badass 6'3" ex-marine: Scalzi
8. Hugo Awards: Scalzi

So a 3-3-2 breakdown. However, give the ROTC and Ronda a little more time to get the propaganda wheel going, and Scalzi is a hanging on to number 7 by a thread.

And perhaps we ought consider what we can do to help her take number 8 as well.

Cataline Sergius,
It could be that or it could be that the main #GGers were already far enough removed from establishment positions or deliberately lived in opposition to it that the tactics used to normally blunt SJW nonsense fell flat.

They tried to put fear into #GGers because that almost always worked in the past. Fear of being labeled, fear of being shunned by conventional media, etc.

However, the coalescing of power into fewer and fewer hands means fewer people are susceptible to the tactics. Those outside the sphere don't flinch as easily at labels or care about being well-liked by groups known to lack integrity.

I think that's the takeaway from #GG. The labels matter if you let them matter/change how you act.

I was LITERALLY called a misogynist, in court documents, by the judge. The same documents awarded me more custody of my children. Her lawyer beat that drum throughout the hearing and I remained on point, focused, and unemotional in my answers. I didn't backtrack, I didn't apologize, I didn't concern myself at all with her claim(s).

She "won" the label, but I won more custody. YMMV

The correct measurement in the vernacular is megahitler. As in, you woke up this morning and smiled at a woman, which equals 1.5 megahitlers on the victim scale.

Blogger Alexander August 13, 2015 1:56 PM

Are megahitlers a logarithmic scale?

Also, it's a mite insensitive to suggest that only an action causes megahitlers. For instance, if you wake up and smile at a white woman, sure, 1.5 megahitlers.

But if you smile at a womyn of color, your are microagressing on so many levels I can't even.

Dunno, but my guess is two things:

1) He's just not that good. Few writers can consistently hit a home run. Jim Butcher is one of them. Larry Correia is another. Tom Kratman's books are always good. John C. Wright, from what I hear (I've only just started by second JCW novel after being blown away by AWAKE IN THE NIGHT LAND), is also consistently high quality.

But these guys are rare. 80% of anything is shite, and that includes books. Scalzi may just have run out of good ideas. There's no shame in that - it's hard to keep readers interested in a series after book 2 or 3.

However, most authors shit the bed by just rehashing the same old story till people get bored. It's unusual to do so by suddenly and dramatically changing the entire tone of your books.

2) After he started getting some modest midlist fame he started hanging out with what passes for the cool kids in SMOFdom - Z-list celebrities like Wil Wheaton, SJW bloggers at Gawker and what-have-you.

Scalzi seems to be the Uriah Heep type: always eager to ingratiate himself with people who can help his career. So he started going full social justice retard on the internet and it tainted his writing too.
