Targeting the media

"A gunman killed WDBJ reporter Alison Parker and photographer Adam Ward during a live interview about a local business in Franklin County, Virginia, on Wednesday morning."

Based on Alison Parker's age and appearance, it doesn't look like a romance-related killing, does it.

This is an open thread. Feel free to post updates in the comments.

Until we know who/why it is all speculation, of course. But there have been several S/F stories written about how the media didn't take something seriously until THEY were the ones in the crosshairs, and then the (perception of the) story changed radically.

How they cover the loss of one of their own will be very illustrative.

I've been hearing about this on the radio. Haven't taken time to dig into it, but they were reporting that the two were a couple. I believe the ages are 24 and 27. So it could still be romance related.

But we know how these events are usually having invalid information thrown in when they are first being reported.

Blogger VD August 26, 2015 9:54 AM

No, she was engaged to a producer at the station, not the cameraman who was shot.

Anonymous jm August 26, 2015 9:57 AM

This sort of thing is fairly common in parts of the Third World. A lot of TV crews have to go around with armed escorts.

Anonymous Viidad August 26, 2015 9:59 AM

The video is brutal.

And... the CAPTCHA thing just asked me to identify all images of cabbage. One of the images depicted a head lettuce, not a cabbage - yet I was forced to identify it as Brassica oleracea rather than Lactuca sativa. They're not even in the same family.

The cameraman was engaged to a producer at the station. The article does not mention her relationship status.

It's not breaking news; I saw it on TownHall yesterday. Still worth mentioning here, though.

You're quite right, Leatherwing. I got mixed up about which one was Parker and which was Ward.

Breaking...The governor of Virginia reportedly said the gunman who shot and killed two TV journalists is a disgruntled former employee of the station. He was dressed all in black. Cameraman Adam Ward captured the man approaching as he fired at him and reporter Alison Parker. The shooter has not yet been identified. According to the station manager Jeffrey A. Marks, it appears that the cameraman was shot first, and Parker was shot while running away.

It's not clear from the film what his plan was; probably a simple and crude one, with a simple and crude aim.

He wasn't using the sights or anything, not that he needed to. He wasn't moving like he was intent on any angle or escape route; ambling and firing from the hip was sufficient for a job that, for him, was basic and required little thought.

There has to be more to it than that, but in the main probably not a lot more. In sum, this looks like typical antisocial behavior, with details to be filled in later.

Blogger Sad Puppy August 26, 2015 10:35 AM

MONETA, Va. (AP) -- The latest on the fatal on-air shooting of two TV station employees in central Virginia (all times local):

11:05 a.m.

An official has identified the suspect in the fatal on-air shooting of a reporter and cameraman from a TV station in central Virginia.

Becky Coyner with dispatch and records at the Augusta County Sheriff's Office says the suspect is 41-year-old Vester Lee Flanagan II, of Roanoke.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe has said the suspect's arrest is imminent. He says police are in pursuit on the interstate, and he says the suspect is believed to be a disgruntled employee of the station, WDBJ-TV.

The station employees were killed in incident Wednesday morning at a shopping center, where an employee with the local chamber of commerce was being interviewed. The station says that person was injured in the shooting.

That is an interesting point. Methinks this might actually produce a more sincere "dialogue on race" than usual and create some race realists. Obama paid for his treatment, his depression meds and his sleeping pills.

• Law enforcement confronted Vester Flanagan on Interstate 66 and Flanagan shot himself, officials tell CNN. It is not clear whether he was killed or injured.

• ABC News reported that it has received a fax containing a 23-page manifesto from someone named Bryce Williams, the news outlet tweeted. The document has been handed over to investigators, ABC said.

• Virginia Tech, photographer Adam Ward's alma mater, said in a statement, "It is shocking and deeply saddening for this community to be again struck by gun violence. We deplore this senseless violence, now seemingly commonplace in our society."

And the "We Need Stricter Gun Control" card too.

She was probably in tunnel vision mode the whole time.

Doing interviews, it's easy to get in that mode, especially if it's live. You're focused on your job and don't really want to be distracted when you're words are going out live over a 50kW transmitter (that was the radio station I worked at, don't know what WDBJ uses).

News teams are very vulnerable to this sort of thing. They would be especially at risk from snipers. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.
Remember the Dan Rather account of being accosted by someone with a gun way back when? The thing that saved him was his cameraman, one of the good old country boys, as I remember. This cameraman had a gun with him; which is against network regulations. He pulled it and pointed it at this perp and told him to get gone. And, that was the end of it. I think Rather related this in one of his books.

We had a guy quit because he thought it was racist that the owner of five businesses told him, a new hire, what to do, and how to do it. Told him KINDLY even. Not yelling, not angrily. He said to me he never felt so disrespected in his life.

Well, as sad and sick as this was, it's the first actual example of my dictum that "The World will not end with a wimper or a bang, but like this (holds cell phone up to record the incident)".

Seriously, no situational awareness from anyone, totally focused on what's in front of them while Death walks up to them, stands there for 20 seconds pointing a gun - while filming himself doing so - and nothing. Tunnel vision to the nth degree, until the first shot.

And some people wonder why "normal citizens" can't see the looming disaster that is unfolding before (behind, around) us. They can't even detect Death standing 5 feet away from them.

I weep (not actually, but metaphorically) for the vicitms and their families, but moreso for our Civilization.

The End of the World will be recorded on a selfie-stick.

Depends on where she was shot. If it was just internal bleeding, you can keep moving for a while before you lose enough blood to go unconscious. Or maybe he just missed the first few shots. I only saw one video and couldn't tell from it.

A longer vid from YouTube was captured by InfoWars. This vid begins with him approaching the scene from further down the "hallway" of the multi-branch deck. Runs for 40 seconds before the first shot. Runs longer after that also, last few seconds no pic but continued sound. Counted at least 13 shots total -- 3 at her before she runs, a few presumably at cameraman, short gap, then several more.

Will likely disappear from YT again soon.

@190 And with deer hunting (rifles anyway) you typically have actual hydrostatic shock. There are very, very few handguns that have that sort of velocity. Running through a 9mm is not uncommon. It's not like in the movies when you shoot someone and they fly backwards. Really, not even a 12Ga shotgun will do that.
