The bonfire of the SJWs approaches

As I mentioned previously, SJWS ALWAYS LIE: Taking Down the Thought Police will be released on August 27, 2015, the first anniversary of #GamerGate. I thought those of you looking forward to the book might be interested in seeing yet another excellent cover by JartStar.

As you can see, the cover is an homage to another political book well-loved by the Left, Jonah Goldberg's Liberal Fascism. But SJWs is a lighter read, it's meant to be a book that serves as a handbook and a reference for those who already oppose the self-appointed thought police as well as an evangelical tract that can be used to convince neutral parties that the SJWS are a serious problem and a direct threat to them even though they may be currently unaware of it. In other words, it's written more in the vein of The Irrational Atheist than The Return of the Great Depression.

There is a chapter devoted to GamerGate, a chapter devoted to the Hugo Awards, and a chapter that contains a systematic breakdown of the standard SJW attack sequence as well as recommendations on how to respond to it. It contains a few surprises, as well as a few elements that will not be a surprise to anyone at all. It is my hope that SJWs will prove but one of many useful weapons to people across the West as the long-overdue counterattack against the thought and speech police grows and gains momentum.

It will be initially available in ebook, but we expect to have a hardcover out before the end of the year.

Immediately recognized the similarity to Liberal Fascism. It's brilliant to emulate that successful cover, and the forked tongue could not be more perfect. The color also stands out, it's too bad you won't see rows of it at your local Barnes & Noble, correct? Looking forward to reading this, as I live as an expat in Canada and this place swarms with SJWs.

Amateur typography nerd moment: Shouldn't the plural s be lower case or at least smaller in an acronym?

Anonymous Stingray August 15, 2015 8:35 AM

Also, the Wall Street Journal quote is a nice touch.

Blogger VD August 15, 2015 8:38 AM

Will there be a hardcover preorder that includes an immediately available ebook?

No. Our books are less expensive than the normal hardcover alone.

Anonymous grey enlightenment August 15, 2015 8:42 AM

the 's' at the end of SJWS should be lowercase, but looks good. Will probably buy a copy

VD and JartStar

I came to say the same regarding the lower case "s." It's not exactly a deal breaker, but I'd consider making it small. Doing so doesn't detract from the consistency since the subtitle contains upper and lower.

Blogger YIH August 15, 2015 9:33 AM

''The most hated man in Science Fiction''
Nice touch ;)

Blogger Salt August 15, 2015 9:34 AM

Yeah, YIH. It's an endorsement as I see it.

Anonymous Homesteader August 15, 2015 9:35 AM

"Hypocrisy is fun!" Yes, your comment makes it clear you think so.

Try looking up "tu quoque".

Now go away.

Anonymous NorthernHamlet August 15, 2015 9:36 AM

If anything, a lower "s" will lightly balance the broken symmetry of the tongue without taking away from it.

And it's nice that the snake tongue and a lower "s" make the same sound.

"ssssssssssss"

Nice subtle hint. Some research (if I recall) shows that marketing that evokes onomatopoeic sounds is more effective as well.

Blogger VFM bot #188 August 15, 2015 9:43 AM

It would be a hoot to also have some of the smear quotes on the back cover: He's a shithead, he's a shithole, he's a rapist, he's a Nazi, he's a misogynist, he's homophobic, he's a Neo-Nazi...etc.etc., blah, blah! LOLz!!!

I have to say that if I knew nothing about Teddy other than the words “18-button mouse”, I’d be forced to think the guy’s ego was pressing uncomfortably on the inside of his skull. (Hint: if you need 18 buttons on an input device, you might want to consider a somewhat larger and more sedentary formfactor than a mouse.)

But Vox Day is, like, the avatar of horrible, the Alex Jones of hate. (Or maybe Alex Jones is the Vox Day of crazy.) There is not a thought in that man’s head that makes a damn bit of sense, and the vast bulk of the ones that aren’t completely incoherent are ragingly hateful and willfully ignorant. He is seriously every shitty thing that pops up on Manboobz combined with at least half of FSTDT rolled into one tiny ball of raging hate, stuffed into the body of a vaguely normal human being with half the genes of a known conman, in lieu of a brain. In fact, he’s such a stereotypical misogynist libertarian geek that I’ve been known to forget he’s crazy-religious as well.

For those who have not been following the events in the new and online concerning these issues, perhaps you should include titles for each of those you quote on the back of the book. "Proud 3rd-Wave Feminist," "Womyn's studies major," etc. Something the rabbits themselves would be proud to have, but ridiculous enough for those who live outside the warren without becoming libel.

"The Most Hated Man in Science Fiction." — The Wall Street Journal

Editorial nit-pick #2: Did the WSJ really write this sentence with all words capitalized? Or is it the title of an article? An Internet search found the phrase in lots of places, but not at wsj.com.

Suggestion: If you do use the suggested quotes as cover blurbs, supply complete provenance somewhere inside the book, like an Acknowledgments page. (They could be live links in the ebook version.)

And I assume there will be plenty of examples to illustrate the book's title? Best document them all at archive.is, starting yesterday.

No, they wrote "Vox Day is probably the most hated man in science fiction." But it's on the title of a book, so it's capitalized. They didn't write it in italics either.

But, flippant I can sort of deal with. I just don't get why Cuckservatives and SJW's are alike. I mean, it's like saying that the Nazis are right-wing.

The color scheme is too cold. Try making just the tongue red, not the whole mouth. The small area of the red tongue would offset the coldness of the blue and yellow and give a slight emphasis and dimension of reality to the tongue. Most tongues are red after all.

Not so, Cail. Also when you use ALL CAPS as a way to emphasize text, would you use apostrophe. So, SJWs Always Lie would become SJW'S ALWAYS LIE.

However now, to my horror, I realize that the title uses all caps instead of small caps. So, "SJWs ALWAYS LIE" is unambiguously wrong.

THE SET OF "PEOPLE" WE DENOTE BY THE TERM SJW LIE RELIABLY

Blogger Markku August 15, 2015 6:47 PM

Proof:
------------
APOSTROPHES IN PLURALS FOR UPPERCASE ABBREVIATIONS

When writing titles, you are sometimes compelled to use just capital letters. This makes it difficult to show a plural of an otherwise normal-looking abbreviation. Remember, if it assists your reader, you can use an apostrophe to show a plural. For example:

CD'S ARE OBSOLETE
TWO LRS'S PER PROCESSOR

Blogger Markku August 15, 2015 6:51 PM

Hmm... No, the small caps would make the text too small, since "always lie" is already small.

Dammit, we seem to have designed ourselves into a corner where the only option is to break grammar.

I so very much hate when that happens.

Blogger Unknown August 15, 2015 6:55 PM

Half Asian here.

Rule No. 1 of Design -- KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid

Overall the cover looks pretty good. My only advice is firstly get rid of the drop shadows on the white type. The type is strong enough, doesn't need cheap photoshop tricks. Same with the smily face button; the highlight on the right, the secondary highlight on the left, the drop shadow and the gradient of the background all combine to give it that disneyesque antiseptic digital feel one can't escape these days; soften or get rid of. Other than that it's bold and communicates the info effectively.

One could also try centering the smily face more between the upper and lower type blocks, making the negative space more dynamic possibly. I would also try enlarging the lower text block so that the entire text grid is flush both left and right; 'justified' as per the lingo.

I would go for the look of a scholarly tome, rather than a bright shiny object, attractive to children and the infirm. Maybe give it a matt finish.

My rating: 6.5/10

My two cents as one who toiled in the art departments of many a NYC advertising agency for about fifteen years. Thanks be to the Gods, Old and New, for delivering me from said horror.

Blogger automatthew August 15, 2015 6:55 PM

Markku, "Always Lie" in titlecase would be unacceptable?

Anonymous Dave August 15, 2015 6:58 PM

If the title was all on one line and caps then the apostrophe cap S looks better. However SJWS on a line by itself looks to be a 4-word acronym particularly for those unfamiliar with the term.

Blogger Markku August 15, 2015 7:01 PM

Since the upper word is SJWs, then the typography obviously differentiates between upper- and lowercase letters, using small caps for lowercase.

But now we run into the typographical problem that the ALWAYS LIE below it is already much smaller than the SJWs above it. If we were consistent and uset titlecase using small caps, and wrote Aʟᴡᴀʏs Lɪᴇ (like we must, if we write "SJWs") then the small caps become even smaller. And I'm not sure we can typographically afford to go that small. But the only other option is to write SJW'S ALWAYS LIE, or break grammar like it currently does.

No, it's not. Stop being ridiculous. When a name sticks and the people to whom it applies don't like it, you use it.

Scores of people have declared "I think X is better, that's why I say X." And two weeks later, they're back to referring to SJWs just like everyone else. Give it up already.

Absolutely. Social Justice Losers would ruin the perfection by introducing one word into the title that wasn't a lie.

Plus, the term Social Justice Warrior started with the SJWs themselves. They called themselves that once upon a time. Which just goes to prove the title, they always lie.

the term Social Justice Warrior started with the SJWs themselves. They called themselves that once upon a time. Which just goes to prove the title, they always lie.

Someone traced the term back maybe 10-20 years; it was started by either SJWs or possibly by SJW's, or maybe by SJW'S, not sure exactly. Some of them still use it to describe themselves. John Scalzi calls himself a "social justice warrior" Arthur Chu calls himself 'not just a social justice warrior, I'm a social justice storm trooper' (slightly paraphrased from a tweet). There are other examples.

Anonymous Jack Amok August 16, 2015 12:42 AM

John Scalzi calls himself a "social justice warrior"

One would presume a warrior could outlift a 16 year old girl. But then he also calls himself a 6'4" bad-ass ex-Marine. It's even possible he's called himself a competent writer, but I don't generally read his site so I'm not sure.

I do know he once called himself a relationship expert and even went on Oprah to... well, show off his wedding ring I think. Or maybe it was to shit test his wife by making a public spectacle of himself. Huh. Wonder if she passed the test?

Blogger VFM bot #188 August 16, 2015 2:32 AM

The apostrophe should be used in SJW's for the same reason that it's used in p's and t's. It helps the reader. SJWs is okay also, but not the best from the standpoint of the reader. SJWS just looks like a 4-letter acronym.

Bottom line? Use of an apostrophe to indicate an acronym's plural is acceptable, and even preferred. But...whatever. :--)

Blogger Shimshon August 16, 2015 3:26 AM

I think that "SJWs" works because it is the simplest way to convey that SJW is the intended meaning, regardless of all the editorial or grammatical reasons against it. "SJWS" can be misinterpreted. An apostrophe is too busy. Little Caps breaks industry practice (I believe), especially when there's a subtitle. Having it on a single line would make it too small (again, particularly when a subtitle is involved).

Blogger Shimshon August 16, 2015 3:29 AM

I think the subtitle is also extremely succinct and pithy. SJWs already hate the term SJW. And there is no more concise way to describe what an SJW is and does as "Thought Police," a term which they also hate having applied to them.

Anonymous Shut up rabbit August 16, 2015 9:01 AM
