The end of the invasion

It looks like the end of the Mediterranean Invasion is now in sight:
A Greek coast guard vessel allegedly sank a rubber dinghy full of Syrian refugees, including women and children, according to film footage shot by Turkish fishermen.

The footage, which was reportedly recorded a few days ago and obtained by Turkish media, suggests that the Greeks sank the migrant boat with some sort of “lance”.

The inflatable boat had just left the Turkish coast, just a few miles from the Greek islands of Kos and Lesbos, where thousands of Syrians and other refugees have landed in recent weeks.

As the Greek patrol vessel moved away from the area, one of the fishermen can be heard saying: “The boat is deflating, the boat’s taking on water and there are people on board.”

He then added: “The boat was pierced by what looks like a long lance.”

The footage then showed migrants in the water as the boat gradually sank. The fishermen went to the rescue of the Syrians – said to be around 50 – and then called the Turkish coast guard, who eventually took the refugees back to the Turkish coast.
Armed or not, mass migrants are invaders and it's about time that the European coast guards started actually guarding their coasts. The only thing that surprises me is that it wasn't the Italian Navy that started sinking the "refugee" boats.

If the Greek and Italian navies had simply sunk the first ten or twenty boats to try to cross the sea, the entire crisis could have been averted. Now, with African "refugees" beating up and raping the aid workers working in the "refugee" camps, it looks like it's going to be an long and ugly process of violent repatriation.

The Italian article points out that the cost of housing and providing for the three "delinquent" immigrants is 20,000 euros a year, which happens to be the annual income for one-third of Italian families. Which means the invasion is going to be brought to an end soon, one way or another.

It was bound to happen. It's just a pity they didn't turn the boat around forcibly, as the Aussie navy does. Maybe it's too late for that in Europe, but we had 6+ years of Labor letting in the majority of boats to Aus. Also, Australia has the advantage of turning boats back to Indonesia whose navy is pitiable in comparison. Either way - forcible turn back or involuntary scuttling - only a dozen or so need to happen before the message is received. Then, hopefully, the giant task of repatriation can begin.

@2 Fp, it doesn't even need context, just an accurate reading. "Sojourn" in 19:33 is a specific verb with a narrow meaning - to come as a guest, to dwell temporarily. But I suppose 'Moses' might be reading a children's Bible which dumbs it down to meaning any stranger for any reason, any length of time.

Anonymous PhillipGeorge©2015 August 15, 2015 5:32 AM

Moses, can you take your own scriptures seriously? Sojourners were to obey the national laws of Israel their host.
To be accommodated they had to adopt much Mosaic Law, and live in respect of it.
It was a theocracy. Kings and priests under YHWH.

If people seeking refuge agreed to honour the God of Israel immigration, any amount of it would work, even to this very day.

The problem is as specific as a Koran and bat shit crazy atheists attempting Utopia all over again.

God can make anything work. He is the difference.

Elul is now. The final countdown, T minus 40 and counting.

Agreed. You can't conflate the mandate of a secular nation state to protect its borders against invasion with verses about "hospitality" and "sojourners" addressed to Jews under a theocracy or to individuals in Christendom. It's apples and oranges.

And yes, it is invasion. They are not coming for a visit, or passing through on the way elsewhere. They are coming to help themselves to your goodies and those of your neighbours.

How about some Bible verses about how to treat thieves and trespassers? That would be much more appropriate.

whose mouths are full of lies,

THEN our sons in their youth

Our barns will be filled

The threat of it backed up by a simple immediate detention and repatriation will suffice in most cases, and in the few it does not, immediate, measured and focussed force directed at the violent offenders will soon get the message across.

Sounds a lot like what I recommended a couple weeks ago, if I say so myself: sink the boats as close as possible to their departure point, so they can be rescued by their own people, who were right nearby. Sink them slowly, to give them the best chance of survival -- a "lance," not a torpedo. It doesn't say whether they were warned first, but it doesn't say they weren't, and I wouldn't be surprised if that were cut from the video anyway.

I'm sure they have tried to "turn them back" without violence, but the invaders have learned not to take them seriously, that if they just ignored threats and kept coming, the Euros would let them in. Once people think you're bluffing, it takes more to convince them you're not.

I think it is more appropriate to go to the New Testament when dealing with this issue. We are called to love our neighbor (in the context where the hated Samaritan loved the beaten man and was a neighbor to him), to love as He first loved us, to give more than what is asked of us, and to remember that we too are sojourners in this world.

For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.

Anonymous doulos23 August 15, 2015 12:48 PM

@50

Issues with your attempt at exegesis:

First, the nationality of the man HELPING was meant to convey the necessity of being a "good neighbor". How this is in any correlation with dealing with a foreign national (e.g. The Samaritan was of another people, and even HE was nice, accommodating, etc.) is a false argument.

Second, the care provided was for an immediate need, not to provide for the beaten man's entire life. As this pericope shows and other NT accounts, to "love one's neighbor" is paramount. To provide for his entire life is not. This principle is set forth in places such as 2 Thes. 3:10. If someone will not work, they will not eat...

Third, this is meant to focus upon the interactions between INDIVIDUALS not as a command to nation-states. In regard to the law, Romans 13 emphasizes the need to follow the LAW without any condition excepting any law which contradicts the law of God. Immigration policy does not contradict any such law...to flaunt it either tacitly or overly is to commit sin against God!

For the commentator posting verses. Yes, we are to treat the sojourner well. However, being hospitable implies that they are a guest. Guests are not to presume that their hosts will be their hosts forever; that would after all be slavery.

So yes, be gracious hosts and be gracious guests. I would love to travel in the Near East and see the sights in Jerusalem and visit Petra. I won't, because I know that only one group is supposed to be an enslaved host. Funny how when you say it that way it sounds like a parasitic relationship.
