If you haven't seen Downfall scene with the original subtitles, I highly recommend it. It's the great, intense acting that makes this scene so awesome on its own and so hilarious in parody.

Moreover, I think the lines in the scene were taken almost verbatim from the memoirs of Traudl Junge, the woman who comforts the crying girl, so in all likelihood this scene actually happened in real life with the real Hitler. Knowing that Hitler's own words and actions are being used so effectively for mockery adds to the enjoyment considerably.

I mean, what if a SJW came over here to gloat and that was the first thing they saw? They'd be all bewildered and dazed, and tweeting out pleas for help and you'd be to blame. Now how would that make you feel?

Blogger JCclimber August 24, 2015 12:44 PM

I"m glad the actor who portrayed Hitler in Downfall has sort of come to peace with all these parodies.

He was greatly disturbed for awhile, as he really put himself into that role, and felt that people were mocking it and I think it is still a sore spot for him.

On the other hand, it has made a movie that was pretty much isolated to a small niche of Germany into an international sensation, and certainly many more people have now seen the full movie out of curiosity after seeing these parodies.

It's a pretty good movie. And the parodies have been great.

Blogger Danby August 24, 2015 12:47 PM

Blogger Chris Ritchie August 24, 2015 12:48 PM

I bought Downfall because of the parodies. I wouldn't have heard about it otherwise. And it is a great movie. Very intense. The parodies only work because his acting was so passionate and the gravity he brought to the character.

And this was great! Trying not to laugh out loud at work.

Anonymous MrGreenMan August 24, 2015 1:03 PM

I read that link in the other thread from O'Neill at Black Gate, who was trying to claim it was all about taste...except, well, 2500 people keep showing up in the no award pile. The Toni Wieskopf one is the bellwether - and, on analysis of the number, the same 2500 show up. Yet, people like O'Neill want to pretend that the ones who could be sometimes swayed were the real conversation here, when the largest faction was the burn-it-to-the-ground No Award camp who thought they'd somehow hurt Brad, Larry, and Vox with this action. And, despite him having turned down the nomination, they still say it's about Larry getting a Hugo, because they're so attached to the narrative, they can't let it go, facts be damned.

Anonymous Hrw-500 August 24, 2015 1:06 PM

The rules have changed. Bad PR is only bad if you value the judgment of the people doing the reporting. When you despise them - when in fact your whole existence is to be hostile to the tyranny of said gatekeeper - then bad PR only re-motivates the base.

Same deal with Trump. By virtue of his existence his base cannot be undermined by his opponents.

Same goes for the puppies. And no doubt in the coming year European bureaucrats will wring their hands at how their dire warnings of the nationalists causing immigrant badfeels are having less and less impact.

Blogger Cail Corishev August 24, 2015 8:18 PM

He's inspired a major TV series AND incessantly writes about rape approvingly! (There is contention on this one.)

The Rape-Rape thing is irony. By the objective standards of civilized society, where "rape" means a woman being forced to have sex despite all her efforts to prevent it, his books (at least the first four; I don't think I made it to the end of the fifth) don't have much rape. As I recall, sometimes it was described as going on in the aftermath of battles, but that's pretty much reality.

However, by the standards of his SJW buddies, who define rape as any sexual contact between a man and woman where the woman didn't freely request it with forms signed in triplicate, the books are loaded with rape. Women are constantly having sex with and even bearing children for men they don't really love; out of duty, necessity, or other reasons besides immediate, unreserved desire, which is the only reason SJWs consider acceptable. By their standards, it's hard to think of a sexual act in the books, portrayed or implied, which isn't rape. It's fun to keep pointing that out, because eventually the SJWs are going to burn GRRM and claim rape as the reason.

Funny thing is -- more irony, maybe -- there's far more incest in the books than rape. But SJWs don't mind incest, so it wouldn't do any good to point that out. Plus, his initials aren't GIIM.

Blogger Carl Philipp August 24, 2015 8:19 PM

@67 Forrest Bishop Regarding The Germ, I've yet to see much of an actual defense of the word "approvingly;" the closest I have seen it come is that kind-actually-sorta-consensual thing with the Lannister twins and the Draego/Daenerys issue, which is hardly "incessantly."

Not that that stops SJWs from eating their own. I've seen at least one article that quoted the statement that in his stories, rapists are the characters we're supposed to sympathize with, and then listed all the rapes in the books and series - apart from the two I mentioned, to my recollection, zero of them were committed by protagonists.

Still have no idea where the quote comes from, if it's not from Rule 1.

Blogger Carl Philipp August 24, 2015 8:25 PM

@71 Cail Corishev
I haven't looked, but I haven't yet seen SJWs call anything in the books "rape" that doesn't fit that definition, other than the two iffy cases I mentioned (the twins, Khaleesi at first)

They don't need to broaden the definition a whit to find plenty of examples of, ahem, legitimate rape. And since to SJWs, portrayal of a negative thing even portrayed negatively is itself a crime, that's enough to get the hate train rolling.

The term originated more-or-less innocently in a manga and anime called Azumanga Daioh. A character, when asked who a certain woman is, answers (in English), "My wife," which comes out as, "Mai waifu." The term caught on in fandom as a word for a cartoon character, or other fictional character, one has a crush on. It's mostly used as a joke . . . I hope.

It used to be *only* used as a joke. Then omegas and low gammas started using it unironically.

If you need a guide on if the other person is using it jokingly or not, just base it on how low his socio-sexual rank is.

Then omegas and low gammas started using it unironically . . . If you need a guide on if the other person is using it jokingly or not, just base it on how low his socio-sexual rank is.

You're talking to the wrong guy. I don't know what an omega or a gamma is, and I don't buy into Alpha Game. And sexuality does not come with a "rank."

That pop-culture fandoms (of various sorts) attract the lonely and socially awkward is obvious. Assigning them Greek letters adds nothing, except the illusion that you have information you don't have.

In any case, I first encountered the term "waifu" amongst the Bronies. None of the the ones I interacted with, as far as I could tell, used the term seriously, though it was my hypothesis that college-age male geeks were watching My Little Pony for the same reason the same demographic was watching Sailor Moon back in the Nineties, because they were charmed by the hyper-feminine characters. No Brony who read my supposition ever contradicted me, so I might not have been too far off the mark.

I suspect these types of cartoons have their popularity in large part because they serve as a sort of crypto-rebellion against feminism. Men are told they are not allowed to be gallant, and women are told that to be "strong" is to be masculine, so these guys go and watch a cartoon where the girls are still girly, indeed, uber-girly, since it's characteristic of magical girl anime or harem comedies (or My Little Pony) that the characters' femininity is exaggerated.

They watch these shows and feel sorry for or protective of the characters, and can do so without losing their feminist cred.

@80 Groot
Feminist cred (short for credibility) is that intangible thing possessed by those who have not earned the ire of the Feminist Collective. We straight white cismales will never be forgiven by our Overpersons, but if we are careful, we can earn a stay of execution by acting the way they wish. This means we cannot like anything they dislike, nor fail to express disapproval for it, because this would prove that we are Not Feminist Enough. And when the dark gods cry again for sacrifice, those cruel and insatiable gods whose thirst can never be slaked, but can be allayed by regular offerings of Male Tears; when that dread time comes again, our names will no longer be removed from the Slander Raffle.

In general, the Feminist Overmind detests any literature that portrays women as feminine, and to appreciate such literature, or fail to speak against or No Award it when ordered, is sufficient to cost a man his temporary amnesty, if there are no more deserving targets when the time for sacrifice rolls around. However, some media portrays women as feminine but also with traits that the Hivemind approves of, such as the ability to win violent conflicts. Since men tend to like femininity, some turn to these as "safer" ways to get their fix, believing the Slavepersons are more likely to overlook them in favor of sacrificing people who consume more verboten media.

It has a tendency to backfire, though; in a slow news week, The Feminists are quite happy to turn on people who like shows they also enjoy because it's "creepy" when a man likes the same shows they like. Although My Little Pony is quite a feminist-friendly show, men who like it are a common flogging horse for the Dominatrixes.

Blogger Groot August 25, 2015 2:36 AM

Women love Groot because he is Groot. They are cute and they simper, giggling and laughing at his humor, because they are cute and I love them. When he leaves, they always sing, "Bye!" I so get women. They are tremendous fun, but not so complicated. Ponies and feminists and sacrifice and -- WTF?! They are so sweet and pretty. They live to make you sammiches and give you blowjobs. What's not to like? I love women, but "Slavepersons" is some alternate reality, and icky.

A suggestion for next year's RP campaign:

First order of business is to drag all the moderates out of the camp, strip them bare and whip them in the direction of the enemy. They are a drain on resources and each one is a potential traitor ready to open the doors to the enemy in the name of compromise.

Reading the commentaries on this years debacle I cannot believe some people are still looking to compromise. That takes a deliberate and sustained misinterpretation of the facts.

This is not two groups of extremists battling it out while the clever moderates sit smugly on the sidelines - this is humanity fighting a dangerous infection which has turned septic. If the SJWs win there will be nothing left for the moderates to feel smug about.

Moderate = conflict-avoiding, cowardly cuck hoping nobody will notice the dark stain where they've pissed their pants.

Perhaps someone with more enthusiasm than brains is trying to make good on that DDoS talk from Sunday?

Matt, I've been getting "database connection" errors on Monster Hunter Nation for about the same timeframe, too.

Allan, the "database connection" error at MHN is apparently some sort of internal problem. It's been happening pretty regularly ever since they upgraded their template. IIRC, the site management guy there says it's mostly just a capacity issue - too many people trying to connect at the same time.

I don't see how Sad Puppies can entertain compromise after this last Hugo. It basically proved the initial point Larry had when this all started. It proved the point in a way that cannot be misunderstood by anyone, except for an SJW.

The cancer has gone stage 4 in the Hugos. This requires massive chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, and even then Hugos may not survive.

One thing I will find interesting is, will the Sad and Rabid Puppies try to save the patient, or make it a mercy killing?

Blogger Markku August 25, 2015 12:46 PM

Kate the Impaler is known for her exceeding lovingkindness, so of course Puppies will try to save the patient. SJWs should have nothing to worry about. There will only be mercy and hugs.

Don't assume. No, I do not know what he means.

If you know enough to reject the concept of ranks in sexuality, then you know what he means.

Or do you have a habit of rejecting things in complete ignorance?

Blogger D. G. D. Davidson August 25, 2015 6:45 PM

I know enough of human beings to know the concept is unintelligible. One may meaningfully speak of a dog or a gorilla as an "alpha," but not a man. Dogs and gorillas behave according to instinct. They have will, but not free will. Man has free will, and he can tell instinct to go hang. Strictly speaking, in the narrowest sense of the term, as a preformed pattern of behavior, man has no instincts.

A man who picks up skanks in bars and brags about it on the internet (let us call this hypothetical man "Roosh") is not "high-ranking" in anything meaningful. "Alpha" is not a correct term for him, unless he's a dog or a monkey. The correct term for him is "cad." Any woman worthy of the name would respond to his advances with a slap, or by walking away from him, or by throwing her drink in his face (heh).

If you want to be "high-ranking" in your sex life, you can be celibate, or you can marry and rear children. But these aren't ranks in any meaningful sense. They are merely parts of a life well-lived, a life examined.

D.G.D. Davidson: Humanity is not all Rembrandt, chardonnay, and Mozart. If you've seen very much of humanity at all, you know that people behave according to instinct more often than reason. Sexual behavior, in particular, is largely instinctive. You have, perhaps, heard the expression "thinking with your dick"? In this instinctive, irrational arena, the Greek letter designations make a good deal of sense. That you or I give the high-count fucker no particular respect does not mean that he does not actually have high status with a great many other people, male and female. I would choose George Washington as an alpha to look up to, but I'd be outnumbered ten to one by those who would rather look up to Mick Jagger.

The problem with Alpha Game or r/K Theory or "evolutionary psychology" is that it's an anthropological theory that leaves out the anthropos. (And the latter two also have the problem of just flat-out making stuff up.) The Alpha Game theorists might indeed have a point--if they were studying chimpanzees.

Because man is rational, man is moral. Animals are not. One can speak meaningfully of the alpha male in a group of apes, but cannot speak meaningfully of ape reason or ape contrition or even (above a rudimentary sense) ape decision-making. Apes are non-moral because apes do not make choices.

By contrast, one can speak of "alphas" in a group of humans only, and even then only analogically, if those humans are choosing to act like apes. Both humans and apes have society and culture, but the terms proper to describing one are not proper to the other. Human actions are described in terms of moral categories; ape actions are not. The ape who cows all the other males and swives all the females is the alpha. The human who does so is a cad and a bully. Can you see the difference?

Humans do not have instincts, and do not have the excuse that they are only behaving according to instinct. What they have are appetites, but because they also have intellects, they can control those appetites. That is what separates men from the rest of the animals.

And I admit I find the terminology frequently used around here to be merely silly, a sort of pseudo-intellectual posturing. When a commenter here calls someone a "gamma," he really means that he thinks him a wimp. It's a mere insult masquerading as some sort of psychoanalytical conclusion (based on nothing but blog comments, no less!). Same goes with "rabbit" and all the made-up stories about what other people's amygdalae are allegedly doing. If someone is lying or behaving in a craven fashion, it is sensible to say, "This man is dishonest and cowardly," but it is silly to say, "His sensitive amygdala is [fill in appropriate jabberwocky]." The second sentence says nothing that the first doesn't say; it merely says it with less clarity, and with some pseudoscience thrown in.

@101. D. G. D. Davidson:

It mostly has to do with choice or what options are available to any individual. (I'm going to slide past your silly blank-slatism, which is anti-science, and pause merely to recommend Steven Pinker's The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature.) If you are unattractive, or unintelligent, or poor, or unhealthy, or suffer from any number of afflictions, and do not remedy them, then the options available to you to choose from dwindle with astonishing rapidity. These options include mates, jobs, opportunities for fulfillment, you name it.

No one is competing for air, or copyright-expired books available for free on the Internet, or things in dumpsters. But scarcity breeds competition, and airy dismissal of ape-like competitive instincts only signals that you're a loser who has accommodated himself to losing. Not striving for harshness here, just clarity. The human who swipes the best female, marries her and raises a family with her during decades of faithful marriage, is not a cad and a bully. He's an alpha. The human who aces the tests, gets into the best colleges, and keeps learning intensively throughout his professional life, gets the promotions and is your boss, is not without intellect nor is a slave to his appetites. He's an alpha.

Luckily, it's more like a game of poker than like the lottery. There's a lot of luck involved, which is the hand you're dealt. But you can improve your hand, in many ways. But that often involves discipline, delayed gratification, foresight, and indefatigable diligence. And , yeah, an alpha will often look at a pot-bellied gamma with seeds in his teeth with contempt, yet not bully but merely pity.

D.G.D: Man can be rational, but often is not. Man does have instincts. Why else does he bother to look at a pretty girl when he has no intention of mating with her? Why else do men kill one another over petty slights and go to prison for it?

As I see it, the Greek letter social hierarchy is a useful way to describe certain instinct driven actions and the relative status of the actors, a more useful nomenclature than "cad" or "wimp". It's no more than a model, and it's not the only one. It's just a model that is commonly understood on this blog.
