Two out of three isn't bad

At File 770, a glimpse of the Sasquan committee's view of the Puppies, which is surprisingly accurate:
There’s been a lively discussion on my Facebook about this all. In particular an explanation of part of the thinking of the committee –

Glenn Glazer Christopher: I put three simple facts before you:
1) The puppies have a strong tendency to _retaliatory_ action.
2) The puppies are crazy, but they are not suicide terrorist crazy.
3) Antonelli has a long history of being an online asshat, but no history of physical violence, including at Worldcon in San Antonio, which he was at.
1) This is correct. Leave us alone, we'll leave you alone. Attack us unprovoked, and we won't let it go until either a) you publicly and unconditionally submit to the Supreme Dark Lord or b) the Vile Faceless Minions have lapped up your blood and devoured your corpse. Your call.

2) We're not crazy at all. We simply have different motivations and different objectives, and we operate on a longer time scale than most. If you still think the goal of Rabid Puppies is to win science fiction awards, you're the one who is observably crazy. We care as much about them every bit as much as #GamerGate cares who wins Kotaku's Game of the Year.

3) Now, Lou Antonelli would appear to be crazy, or at the very least, stupid. We don't support his letter to the police, we don't support his apology, and we don't support his subsequent attempt to make nice with his new BFF David Gerrold. We may be, in fact, we indubitably are, Evil, but we are not stupid. In any event, we don't care whether Sasquan bans him or not. He is not, by his own account, a Sad Puppy, a Rabid Puppy, or an SJW, and therefore we're no more interested in him than in Black Gate, Guardians of the Galaxy, or any other non-Puppy on our lists.

As for Sasquan, we have no interest in disrupting it, but we do expect our attendees to be prepared for any SJWs inclined to violate the posted Sasquan harassment policy. That is why I encourage every VFM, Puppy, and Dread Ilk attending Sasquan to keep a recorder running at all times on your Android or iOS phone. If you're subsequently subject to any verbal or physical harassment, you'll have material evidence on hand to bring to the relevant authorities. More importantly, you'll also have a strong defense to present against the inevitable SJW lies concerning your own behavior.

This map by Camestros Felapton is rather clever. I always pictured Rabidonia as being more northern, but he does a good job of placing the various relationships. Moreover, if Voxpopoli were in the upper right, it would be right where Lord Bane is in Illuria.

I like if you scroll up a little bit to Scarlett "Brian V" O'hara: "On another note, there’s a recent comment on VD’s blog from someone asking how he can 'completely wreck things for the SJW crowd' at Sasquan, which frankly, given some of the violent rhetoric from the commenters there, I find rather chilling."

I presume the convention center has fainting rooms?

Blogger Joshua Dyal August 12, 2015 3:16 PM

And then further down in the thread, she continues: "I grant, in the immediate context of that one thread, that the responses have been fairly restrained. But given the broader context of the commenters on that blog as a whole — commenters who, among other things, have spoken hopefully of mass shootings and extrajudicial executions — I don’t find the tameness of that one thread particularly comforting.

And honestly, 99.9% chance, I figure everything is going to be just fine at Sasquan. However, when people talk vaguely about “wrecking things” at the convention, even if they mean that in a non-violent context, I’m still going to have some concern for all those folks who busted their asses to make this happen here in Spokane, ordinary fans who had no expectation that they’d be this year’s ground zero of the US culture wars."

Anonymous MrGreenMan August 12, 2015 3:22 PM

I guess, now that she's quantified it at 0.01% chance, she can either make her rational decision as an adult to go or not to go, or she can continue to spread that FUD like a good sheep and hope that, one more time, her emotional pearl-clutching will get some white knight, some where, to bend to her will.

People drove cars with airbags identified with exploding and rending your face apart with metal pieces. There's probably greater than a 0.01% chance that you had such a car if you own a car made in the last 20 years. Did everybody stop driving?

Blogger Nate August 12, 2015 3:22 PM

Speaking as a resident of Seattle - geographically near Spokane if not culturally near Spokane - the only people around here who speak of "wrecking things" and then go out an do it are leftists. (That video is one incident of many similar incidents, I assure you: you can Google for many others.)

Anonymous MrGreenMan August 12, 2015 3:38 PM

Now that I'm reading that number correctly, she feared a 0.1% chance event, and, if there are 10 puppies and stealth puppies, and I believe the number was about 4,000 expected attendees, let's say 5,000 on a good day, 0.2% or better of the population will be Puppy-oriented... This means she doesn't even fear puppy-related violence as more than an even money proposition.

I know the numbers from her are complete crap, but, extrapolating from her numbers, she's incoherently innumerate, not just innumerate.

That's talking about private communications. Sasquan is a convention in a public area.

If you're in public, there's no expectation of privacy. If you end up in a private room for discussion, where participants have a reasonable expectation of privacy, you could have a legal duty to announce that you're recording things and getting consent, but the law linked would not be relevant on the convention floor.

That said, there might be some other laws that restrict public recording. Also, IANAL.

Use of recording devices in Washington State
http://www.dmlp.org/legal-guide/washington/washington-recording-law

Public Meetings
Washington law allows you to use sound and video recording devices at public meetings (i.e., meetings of a governmental body required to be open to the public by law), unless they disrupt the orderly conduct of the meeting.

Sasquan has control of the venue, the spaces. If Sasquan allows recording, so be it. Some events might be disallowed. Okay.

That is all.

Once upon a time hideous slug-joined-worm horny aliens with rainbow-colored pelts invaded Earth and began to suppress the natural order of things. They killed women, raped men and sold off babies for parts. Flailing responses from various governments collapsed because they tried to negotiate with the things. Finally a volunteer force of men was put together where no one would have expected, Europe, called the Puppy Squad. Clad in powered-armor these alpha males refused to abide by the rules of war and took no mercy on the SJW aliens. Their own governments denounced them as they liberated the human race from BDSM alien bondage.

Hated and hunted by their own governments, which they liberated, the Puppies had to abandon Earth with their supporters. Finally they decided to invade the alien home world. The slugs never had a chance after that.

Anne Rice, anti-SJW.

Wait, what?

http://www.everyjoe.com/2015/08/12/lifestyle/anne-rice-censorship-in-name-of-political-correctness/#1

“Want to see the new censorship in action? Want to witness an internet lynch mob going after its target? Check out the Amazon review site for this novel and read the one star reviews. Note how many have been posted since August 4th,” Rice wrote. “I abhor censorship in all forms. I condemn those who abuse the Amazon reviewing system to ‘take down’ authors who books they have not read — for political or religious or ‘social’ reasons. What do you think? If you are an author, how would you feel if you became the target of this kind of campaign? This book was published in April of 2014. It was well received, and like most books published it received good and bad reviews. Then an article about it written over one year later on August 4th of this year, appears to be what (intentionally or unintentionally) incited the lynch mob. Your thoughts are welcome.”

“I think we are facing a new era of censorship, in the name of political correctness. There are forces at work in the book world that want to control fiction writing in terms of who ‘has a right’ to write about what,” Rice continued. “Some even advocate the out and out censorship of older works using words we now deem wholly unacceptable. Some are critical of novels involving rape. Some argue that white novelists have no right to write about people of color; and Christians should not write novels involving Jews or topics involving Jews. I think all this is dangerous. I think we have to stand up for the freedom of fiction writers to write what they want to write, no matter how offensive it might be to some one else.”

“We must stand up for fiction as a place where transgressive behavior and ideas can be explored. We must stand up for freedom in the arts. I think we have to be willing to stand up for the despised. It is always a matter of personal choice whether one buys or reads a book. No one can make you do it. But internet campaigns to destroy authors accused of inappropriate subject matter or attitudes are dangerous to us all. That’s my take on it. Ignore what you find offensive. Or talk about it in a substantive way. But don’t set out to censor it, or destroy the career of the offending author.”

Blogger Cail Corishev August 12, 2015 10:08 PM

@64, right. Rice was raised Catholic as a child, and came back to it for a while, but it seemed to be mostly out of nostalgia and sentiment (I read part of her book about it). After several years, she got mad that the Church hadn't yet changed its position on homosexuality, so she made a big public departure. Maybe Francis will bring her back.

So there's no doubt she's a liberal, at least on that issue; but since she's been attacked by bogus review trolls, the SJW speech police have made her an enemy. It can't be good for your career as a bogus reviewer to have Anne Rice reporting you to sites like Amazon.
