We're #98
Right Wing News ranks the top 100 conservative sites:
91) Canada Free Press: 68,023
92) Human Events Online: 68,967
93) Jewish World Review: 76,215
94) GOPUSA: 71,293
95) Ricochet: 71,358
96) Day by Day: 73,755
97) Numbers USA: 76,280
98) Vox Day: 76,816
99) X Tribune: 76,417
100) City Journal: 84,176
This would probably appear to be more impressive if I hadn't ranked 52nd with an Alexa rating of 27,594 in 2014. How is it possible that my ranking dropped 46 places when the monthly pageviews have risen more than 400,000 from one year ago? Simple. The Alexa ratings are nonsense as they are based on links rather than traffic. I bounced the blog rating last year in order to prove my case, then let it decline to its "natural" level because I don't care about things like that.
So, don't take any list that is based on Alexa or any similar ranking system too seriously. And also, I'm still not a conservative, but I gave up trying to fight that battle a long time ago.

I SAID GOOD DAY SIR!
Link goes to 2014 list
Even though you're not a conservative, the advantage of being on a list like this is maybe some cuckservatives will check this blog out and free their minds from the neo-con cell they currently inhabit. One can hope.
If you were interested ... Trump's doing a job on Fox News, but probably not enough to drop them all the way to #99. But Canada Free Press looks ripe for the picking. And Day-by-Day's caught in a rut. Jussayin.
Well, you're what conservatives should be.
Conservative means not liberal.
Uh, FoxNews is number one on this stupid list.
Wall Street Journal (which shouldn't even be on it) is number two.

Ah got it, last year's link.
If this was "100 most vile..." or "100 most evil" lists, then placing #98 would be cause for some concern.
As it is, not so much.
Awww, and I was so looking forward to the virtual assault on Numbers USA... [grin]
This list is proving to be more useful than I was expecting.
I just found out Jesse Ventura want's to be Trumps running mate.
"Conservative means not liberal."
That's sooooo last Thursday.
Screw the rankings. You're #1 on many SJW hate lists. Now, that's impressive.
Vox... youre not a conservative... but most of your readers are.
"I just found out Jesse Ventura want's to be Trumps running mate."
please please please please please let this happen
+1 on the Jesse Ventura wish. America, we're screwed anyway. Might as well do this right.
Ventura-Trump:
Would the takes be hot enough to melt steel beams?
Day by Day IS caught in a rut- cuckpimping your hotwife as a men's club "hostess" is a shark-jumping moment, in my book. Stopped reading after that.
And regarding "conservative"-what's to conserve? It's Chesterton's null term. I'm a Western Civilization Traditionalist, Anglo-American subset. I see little in the modern Western world that is worth "conserving".
Cryptoanarchist creative-destruction libertarian technophile tree.
Conservatives and Christian-Libertarians should see each other as the "loyal opposition", whereas today's liberals are just the enemy.
There is plenty of common ground between Conservatives and Christian-Libertarians to have meaningful dialog. Between Conservatives and Liberals? Not so much.
Depends on how one defines "conservative," no?
Fulminata:
There are a couple of different ways to define conservative, _at_least_ a couple. One is in the sense of "We've got ours and we want and intend to keep it that way." That's conservative in the more old fashioned, British Tory sense. Another way - my way, as it happens; feel free to find your own way - is to start with the basic unquestioned and unquestionable assumptions about the nature of man, malleable/perfectible by breeding, by culture/training/environment, by neither or by both but not reliably and not for long. Under that latter view, the two extremes - nature/nurture - are ideologies, but conservatism is a centrist non-ideology.
JCB, there is a reason neocons were once known as "Socialists for Nixon." The only "con" in there is con man.
@16 YES! This would be comedy gold!
@24 Wait a moment! I emphatically heard Nixon say, "I am not a crook!"
http://www.iflscience.com/space/you-can-now-vote-officially-name-exoplanets-first-time-ever
lets get one named after Vox... that will make SJW's defecate themselves.
@Tom Kratman: "Depends on how one defines "conservative," no?"
When someone tells me they are a conservative my standard response has become, "Of what?"
Trump/Ventura - The two great statesmen of our time whose wit and wisdom is best summed up by their most famous orations, "You're Fired!" and "Bunch of slack-jawed faggots around here. This stuff will make you a god damned sexual Tyrannosaurus, just like me!"
And also, I'm still not a conservative,
You mean, you're still not a #cuckservative.
Okay I don't get this at all.
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/voxday.blogspot.com
Global Rank 71,498
Rank in United States 16,554
And yet...
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/theconservativetreehouse.com
Global Rank 30,670
Rank in United States 8,591
What am I missing? Does a site have to register itself as a "conservative blog" in order to appear on this list?
And why is Drudge, half of whose links are to sites like CBSLocal:Miami or CBSLocal:Philadelphia or TMZ or Hollywood Reporter -- considered to be a "conservative blog"?
Because it looks like CTH is at least twice as popular as VD.
Educate me. That's why I come here.
@31
Taqiyyologist, that is.
Great. Now all the SJWs know my email addy.
Freakin hoop-jumping comment system.
Go ahead, freaks. Bombard my shit.

Alexa is based on links, not traffic. And it's VERY easily manipulated. I could probably pop VP up into the top 500 US on Alexa within two weeks if I felt like it.
>>>And also, I'm still not a conservative
Congratulations anyway - Day by Day is entertaining, and I think City Journal has great pieces, so you are in good company. Or they are in good company!
> Wait a moment! I emphatically heard Nixon say, "I am not a crook!"
A widespread misunderstanding. What he was actually trying to say was "I am not a cook", but you know how those mikes were at the time.
> We're #98
We really don't try at all. Of course, we really don't care at all either.
But I'm sure that's a popularity measurement, not an influence one. The influence of this blog is probably at least in the top 20.
Vox,
If Alexa is too flawed to be of use, what metrics that you know of would be worth using to track a site's growth?
I just launched a new site and folded my old one into it. Building up that site to gain more book readers is one of my priorities: do you (or any other ilk) have suggestions on that front?
w00t! Congrats Vox (even if you don't consider yourself a conservative)!
Congratulations

Haha
Years ago, Michelle Malkin's site was within the top ten, I think.
She's not even in the list.
You'd be in the top 20 if it wasn't for all the Scalzi back and forth. I don't even know who Scalzi is. I come to the site for the philosophy. BTW, I'm not a gamer or a Scifi reader. (Heinlein, excepted) I come for the philosophy. But...do your thing, as you must. I can find the gems. It's just that I don't know who Scalzi is,and am not interested in finding out.

Does she still run Twitchy? It's at 28.
Viidad, I've done SEO/site building work, so if you want to talk details, drop me an email, cail.corishev at gmail. I don't know how much you already know about this stuff, so ignore me if this is old hat. A few basics anyone can use:
First of all, Alexa relies on links because that's all it can see from outside sites. It can't see your traffic stats, so links provide a rough approximation, since links are how the traffic gets there. However, it's not hard to see how a "dangerous" site like Vox's would tend to have fewer links than its traffic would indicate: some of the readers who would otherwise link to it don't for fear of getting in trouble. So that's a case where their algorithm breaks down.
Anyway, on your own site, you can look at your traffic for gauging your site's growth, with either built-in stat tools or something third-party like Google Analytics. Especially look at the traffic that's coming from direct links and social media, because the person who lands on your site because his friend said, "Hey, I think you'd like this book," is much more likely to stick around and buy it than the person who lands because you came up #7 in a Google search for something. You also don't want to count on search engine traffic any more than necessary, because it can disappear overnight.
Also look at what pages are getting the most visits, and consider whether you can improve/expand on those. If your most popular page is on composting, see if you can think of more composting topics to write about. Likewise, look at what searches are bringing people to you. If you're getting quite a few hits from searches like "feeding maggots to chickens" because you mentioned that somewhere, maybe you can expand that into a full page article. That kind of stuff: see where there might be a need, and fill it.
Since you're selling something, make sure your entire site funnels to that sales page. There should be clear links to it from every other page, and link to it once or twice from within the main content of the page when it makes sense. When you link to it (from your own pages or from elsewhere), don't use link text like "buy my book here"; use link text like, "See how to COMPOST WITHOUT A BIN," where the capitalized words are the link, and vary it. Link text that matches what people are searching for gives more value.
Look for opportunities to get links from other places, especially popular sites and sites that relate to your topic. A link from a prominent site like Instapundit is great, but not as good as if it were from an equally prominent gardening site, because the latter will drive more value for your specific search terms.

Are you kidding? That was one of the most entertaining smackdowns ever.
It actually won my wife over to reading this site. Better than a soap opera, a serial novel or a rap beef. Maybe all three, rolled into one.
Especially the joke about the human/orc hybrid.
Cail and Josh - thank you both.
You may not be conservative Vox but you are a badass.
stormfront would be #66 on this list, if it were included. Therightstuff.biz would be #77. At least they deigned to include you.
@44. James Oswald

Good. For proper mental hygiene, you are better off not knowing. I didn't know who she/he/it was either until reading about that s/h/it here... and seeing the pictures. Thanks a lot, Steve! :)

Comment on the very popular gardening type blogs. Comment a lot there and leave your blog info there. people into gardening will find your comments... like them.. and find your blog.. and your books.
Groot @34 Goddamn! Shew. Buddy buddy-buddy-buddy-buddy. I've seen some bad-ass bush before, man, but nothin' like this.
I suppose a tree should know his bush.
Internet marketing is more akin to witchcraft than engineering. Cail Corishev @46 covers this pretty well. Authors used to depend on their publishers to procure the necessary eyes-of-newt and scrotums-of-cyclops to magic up hits, but it turns out witchcraft doesn't work.
Search engines (which really means Google), like lots of content, with lots of incoming links, with the content having been available for a long time and/or being currently very popular.
If you're poor or pressed for time, the simplest rules are:
1) Produce content.
2) Keep the content stable; i.e. don't mess with the URLs. (VD isn't using blogspot because he can't do any better.)
3) Get involved with your community. (@52 Nate covers this.)
The fourth rule is that you should keep control, but this is complicated, because it means you should use either a single source for everything, or control the myriad of services necessary to maintain an online presence yourself. So for simplicity's sake, pick a mainstream production platform and stick with it. In the long run, it's easier, and when it suddenly stops working, it's not your fault.
98 is odd however Vox does expound upon truths, stats, economics issues and inconvenient hypocrisies or failed policies or failed/outdated political ideals minus dumbing content down.
98 is also odd considering those seeking truth and facts, Vox is not garrulous, officious or a henhouzer. The man focuses on top issues.
I wish content were more complex here to aggravate the man in a dress, sjws and critics.
Higher economics can prove rather complex to the average person of any political stripe except for libertarians who most likely have a firm grasp for broader issues like liberty/freedom, federal reserve banking, legit stats, or debating econo theory vs. another econo theory.
Eliza, you are just cute. Do you have children and grandchildren? I have the feeling I could trust you.
@16 Nate -
NO DOUBT - Jessie V IS the AntiBiden hisownself.
" I bounced the blog rating last year in order to prove my case, then let it decline to its "natural" level because I don't care about things like that."
So you admit by your own words that you have the knowledge and ability to manipulate ratings...what other ratings are your manipulating.
@Nate and rho
Thank you.
So you admit by your own words that you have the knowledge and ability to manipulate ratings...what other ratings are your manipulating.
He's a gamer. The first rule of being a gamer is figure out how to maximize the rules of the game in your favor.
This is basic stuff.
You might as well complain that people who score well on the SAT are manipulating the sacred ratings of the college board...
Its not quite the same....if you study for the sat and do well, or if your smart and done well thats fine... if you happen to know how the machine that scores the sat test work, access that machine and give yourself a better score... thats something different.. it does show intelligence I will grant you that .. I bounced the blog rating last year in order to prove my case, then let it decline to its "natural" level because I don't care about things like that.
The point is that many times VD has claimed not to be artificially increasing his ratings, site views, amazon rank etc and then here in his own words he admits he has done just this... I have never doubt that either VD or soemone he hangs with has the ability to do this... as you said, first rule of gamers .. gamers will game... cheaters will cheat and shame on the system for being weak...
I just like the valuable info you provide in your articles. I will bookmark your weblog and take a look at again right here frequently.
