Facebook moves into speech policing

I don't even use it, but I'm shutting down my Facebook account. This is why:
Facebook pledged Monday to combat racist hate speech on its German-language network amid an upsurge in xenophobic comments online as Germany faces an unprecedented influx of refugees.

The US social media network said it would encourage "counter speech" and step up monitoring of anti-foreigner commentary, as company representatives were due to meet German Justice Minister Heiko Maas later Monday.

Facebook said it would work with other organisations in Germany "to develop appropriate solutions to counter xenophobia and racism and to represent this online".

It also urged users to report offensive postings and announced a partnership with the group Voluntary Self-Monitoring of Multimedia Service Providers (FSM).

As Germany faces a record influx of refugees and a backlash from the far right, social media such as Facebook have seen an upsurge of hateful, xenophobic commentary.
Big Brother being corporate rather than government doesn't make it any better. This is Orwellian in the extreme.

Joined Facebook in '05 before freshman year of college to connect with my roommate. Was off and on (meaning deleting, not deactivating) until I graduated in '09. Deleted shortly before entering grad school and then, surprise (!), grad school requires Facebook to communicate with us. Was on until end of first year of grad school, deleted it, and never been happier.

It makes me wonder if deleting your account is even possible now or if deactivation is the only option.

@2 IIRC, you can deactivate it and request it be deleted, but if you login at anytime for a year after that deletion request, your account is reactivate.

At least that's how it was when I deleted my account. My stuff is still probably on the servers, but my account doesn't work anymore.

It's been moving in that direction for a bit. After the Supreme Court gay marriage (Obergefell) ruling, Facebook set up an app so that any user could make their profile picture covered by a transparent rainbow. And a week or two ago this picture appeared on the news feed of all users promoting "Women's Equality Day": http://bit.ly/1J8gkkY.

Google is a much SJW oriented as any of the other big companies, but they know where their bread is buttered and thus seem to keep a much lower profile on the censorship. So Google+ is correspondingly better.

Blogger James Dixon September 14, 2015 6:03 PM

Attitudes have changed so much in just 40 years,” she continued.
Even worse: The man and the woman were both white. (Ewwwww!)
“I would be uncomfortable with sending out any images or messages that include Western-dominated material,” Stuart said.

Then I returned to Facebook, I guess around 2009. Only to get more death threats because I am on the right side of the political spectrum. Funny, the death threats always came from tolerant liberals, some with the "No H8" movement. Left FB for good 3 or 4 years ago.
Good riddance.
No one from FB will ever bother themselves with policing speech as long as you attack Christians who aren't thrilled with gay marriage.
I just pointed out that in California you can perform real or pretended sodomy on a parade float and this is supposed to be celebrated, while at the same time we have to tear down a cross atop a hill in San Diego because people driving by are offended.

You would logically think that a business model based on linking to retail web sites is worth less than the largest retailer...

Except that Facebook is in the process of figuring out how to alter how people act and think based on the importance of their feed selection algorithms. Which is of paramount importance to the elite. In the meantime however they have to be content with the world's largest data mining operation the world has ever seen.

Many like what Julian A said of FB;

+Assange said: “Compare the mission statements of Google and the NSA – the NSA, who literally say, ‘We want to collect all private information, pool it, store it, sort it, index it, and exploit it.’ Whereas Google says, ‘We want to collect all private information, pool it, store it, sort it, and sell those profiles to advertisers.’ Really, they’re almost identical.”

He said, “Every time you go to a party and take a picture and post that picture to Facebook, you’re being a rat. You’re being a narc.”

“People who use Google are the product,” he said. +

Failure FB failed on several fronts; poorest design, design flaws. Failure FB worshippers are troubled people. It would be an insult to children to state kids made FB.

I recall my dislike for FB around 2008 or so. I tried or kept the account around and didn't use it, I dont recall. I equated failureFB to tragically unguarded thoughts in real time. FB timing was awful, I recall its popularity like how much I dislike glorifying ugly vampires, Twliiiight movies.

I am thrilled for no more vamp tramp love movies, FB trouble (which might outdo failure walmart since retail sales are gloriously down) less hipster music, less mock worthy fashions, the less trash the better. Then again most people love the drama and trash. So we are stuck with FB for a while longer.

FB content is horrific, its almost best for background checks or sadly, verifying insider family gossip if one does have a few toxic henhouzers in their family.

The weirdo FB worshippers profiles willingness to post certain info reveals a lack of boundaries, guarded thoughts and privacy, its like letting the robber know one is gun-free.

Yet FailedFB is perfectly acceptable in post americant like Catty Jenners poor overdose on estrogen. Cringe worthy.

Anyways, it was not my desire to use FB to spy back on nibbys but my hand was forced. I required sufficient proof cutting some issue loose was to my best health and better future. Those decisions proved fruitful via a weak vessel like FailureFB.

Blogger Updated; LP999/S.I.G. Burn'in Up! September 15, 2015 12:19 AM

People should try WeChat. It is more applicable to a smart phone but can be used on PC as well I believe.

It also has alot of useful features. Easy to setup group chats (up to a 1000 or more can join), remove annoying people, timeline type stuff, can share documents, anonymous names and setup (think you only need a phone verification or maybe not even) etc.

It will collect your information/messages and give it to the government but that government is the Chinese Govt so unless you guys are in China posting anti-party stuff, organise riots, doing corrupt things etc. they aren't going to care about your anti-SJW political views. I don't really see how the CCP having your anonymous profile is going to impact your personal life anywhere near as badly as facebook having it. I doubt they would ever send your info to the US Gov unless you are a international drug dealer, pedo or terrorist etc.

Since the app isn't really based on 'look at me' social neediness (In China it's used very heavily for business communication/networking) SJWs are not likely to infest anytime soon.

Furthermore SJWs have no possible way of outing you as they cannot view your profile unless you add them as a friend etc.

I'm trying to get my close friends on it so I can close down my facebook account.

If you have to post your real name to facebook to add comments to stories in the local paper the SJW's can find you. They could troll and harass you for wrong think letters to the editor back before the WWW by using a city directory at the library. it's much much easier today.

I found too that when I use my D&D character's facebook page to comment on stories in The Daily Mistake, the editors remove them since they cannot verify I really do live on Canceron.

No, you are shutting down your facebook account because you are too scared to challenge me on an open field of battle. You want plausible deniablity and a memory hole.

@100 "you are too scared to challenge me on an open field of battle"

I'm also too scared to charge across an open field with my AK shooting at M1 Abram's screaming "feeeeeduuummmb!!!"

Don't challenge someone to their own rigged game, unless you know how to cheat really well......even then it's risky....

I can see people going back to more traditional online methods of communicating and forming groups, based on truly open standards like email and IRC which are owned and controlled by no one, perhaps overlaying those with useful ideas learned from social media. Personally, I'm excited about it.

Wow, nothing says pain like the day after. I have to practice my silence a great, great deal.

JRL-“It is a shame that we are forced to take Christians into a court to get them to recognize us. It upsets me because I want it so much—a big lavish ceremony, the whole works.-This has got to be parody"

The good news is he wont see the divorce rape of his assets & alimony coming.

I've never understood anyone using Facebook. I've stayed away from social media from the beginning as I saw it was mostly a data mining opp for people with an agenda. Sometimes paranoia is prudence.
