Nero eviscerates PopeHat

The Popehat project--endless, tedious, insufferably smug posts about minutiae--only really works if you read your own goddamn sources.

Top tip for bloggers whose raison d'etre is smugly correcting others: actually read reports before posting about them.

Milo is referring to this amusingly clueless post by Ken White, in which the inveterate champion of free speech flirts with abandoning his principles because a) he doesn't like #GamerGate, b) he doesn't like certain GamerGaters, including me, and c) girls had feelbadz! It's a pity, because the guy has done some genuinely good work defending free speech in the past, but has somehow failed to recognize that SJWs represent one of the most serious enemies that his chosen cause has ever known.

Ken tried to belatedly explain his failure to bother reading the entire UN report before responding to it in an update.
Further information suggests I was far too benefit-of-the doubt here, which is what happens when you write fast and when you generally despise some of the people involved. Some of this is still right, but regard the conclusions and characterizations with skepticism. Taking a second look. See, e.g., the fact that they cited this [footnote 118] for the video game discussion I cite below. When I'm wrong I'm wrong. Will revisit.
Hey, I think we all understand that there is no time for actually "reading" things or ensuring one is accurately "informed" before leaping to the defense of a woman experiencing feelbads; it is a white knight's pleasure to destroy his own reputation if by doing so he can save a fair maiden from even a single incident of cyberviolence.

I haven't read the report myself nor do I have any intention of doing so. I have not hitherto found either the United Nations or Literally Who to be interesting or even remotely credible. But I do find Ken's excuse-making to be fairly typical of the moderates who are always happy to bend over backward to rationalize the most blatantly dishonest SJW behavior while repeatedly casting aspersions at those who actually stand up to them. And I expect there will be further backtracking on the subject, as I would be very surprised if the SJWs responsible for the report got anything right at all.

"Cyberviolence" is a false and deceptive issue. I have been the recipient of far more "cyberviolence" and death threats than all of the Literally Whos combined, and for much longer; if it is such a serious issue then why hasn't the UN or Ken White rushed to my defense at any time in the last 14 years?

When I reviewed and critiqued the economics study on immigration and jobs here yesterday and the day before, I gave the benefit of the doubt to the economists whose views on immigration creating jobs opposed my own. I interpreted every statistic and every assumption in a manner that favored their perspective, not mine. That is exactly what you must do if you wish to provide a serious analysis that will withstand objective review. But by his own admission, Ken White gives the benefit of the doubt to those who oppose people he generally despises. And that is why, despite his legal work on behalf of free speech, he cannot be considered an intellectually credible individual.

Case in point:
So there's a solution to, that you know. Don't read the blog any more. Unfollow the Twitter feed. Look for someone whose viewpoint is more acceptable to you. Maybe even write it up yourself.

But that's not the GamerGate way.

Also, note how angry you are, and then look at the original again. I warned that UN speech restrictions are suspicious, I pointed to multiple things to be concerned about, and I even questioned the content at issue — I just didn't see how crazy the sourcing was, yet. And I suggested that any actual codes that come out of it should be examined carefully.

But none of that is enough for you. You want hate. It's not enough for you unless I excoriate the people you hate.

That's why normal people don't take you seriously.
This is deeply amusing coming from an individual who is literally mentally unstable. How would he know what normal people take seriously? Ken, you're not normal. You're not honest. You're not intellectually rigorous. And you're not credible. People like me would be delighted to continue to ignore you, but you go out of your way to attack us online, both on PopeHat and on Twitter.

Neither of the two commenters was demanding that Ken hate or excoriate anyone, they were simply expecting him to show at least a modicum of discernment concerning various individuals and institutions widely known to be less than entirely truthful. He failed to do so, and when rightly taken to task for it, he completely mischaracterized their responses.

Of course, it does make a certain amount of sense that he would side with the SJW whack jobs. Birds of a feather and all that. And as we all know, SJWs always lie.

As long as the leftist or moderate can see who are the Who and the Whom, he doesn't need to investigate the details. In fact, he has every reason not to do so: what happens if he looks into it and his intellectual honesty recognizes that the Who are the liars and aggressors and the Whom are the innocent victims this time? Then what's he gonna do? Better to stay ignorant of the facts and stick to what he knows: those people over there suck, so side with those who are attacking them.

ya know at first...I was at least going to give Ken some slack... because he was wrong and he was admitting he was wrong.

But... his gamma tendencies win out in the end... and he has to keep going back and revising his statement... "well if you read what I wrote you'll see wasn't really wrong."

Blogger Civis Silas September 27, 2015 9:45 AM

Unfollow the Twitter feed.

Too late for that. I actually RT'd him fairly often when I shared common ground with him, which makes his decision to block more detrimental to himself than anyone else. Given that the scope and meaning of cyberviolence is currently changing, would this qualify as Popehat engaging in self-harm?

I've noticed this trend with the old school Libertarians like Ken.

These days they all seem to be on the look out for hills to die on.

Trying desperately to segregate themselves from the alt right.

It's not quite a matter of refusing to shit or get off the pot. That's just the end result not the motivation. The motivation is to try and maintain their identity. They are too wrapped and too over invested in the liberal end of Libertarianism. They can't let it go.

It was what separated them from dumber conservatives who liked Jerry Falwell and the Moral Majority. They were determined to prevent Nehemiah Scudder from taking over the country. And (in theory) it let them have sex with lots and lots of girls with no negative consequences.

I know because I used to be one of them.

The time has passed for old school Libertarianism. I feel a sentimental nostalgia for it myself but I've put it away. There is no place for it in the world that's coming.

Because some cyber violence is more equal than other cyber violence.

Yup. I read popehat for a while before finding VP. Mostly Clark's posts as they tended to be funnier. But after a while of reading and interacting only a little with the commenters it became clear there was no actual SPINE there, just illusion of rigorous intellectual objectivity.
Ken is some kind of protean SJW, in that he's not an outright full-blown SJW in some narrow ways, but to all intents and purposes, he really mostly is. Patrick is in my view emotionally far less stable than Ken, who we know is a self-admitted mentally unstable person, and in my considered opinion is also a narcissist. Clark I interact with quite a bit and I generally like. He is still a little brainwashed in certain areas, but he may yet come around. Keep in mind he is very smart and he IS used to being mostly right most of the time, and years of commenting at popehat have given him the illusion of being smarter than most anyone.

I am sure VD recalls my first email to him, since he posted parts of it, the effect of beginning to understand Vox's point of view and way of thinking is not something that happens immediately even for smart people. It can take a while to consciously realise how much re-programming TV, socially accepted PC nonsense and so on have done to you even if you were never even remotely SJW friendly. It's as if we're awakening from a deep slumber only to realise we have had zombie-values beamed into our heads for a long time and some of those values/behaviours can take a while to jettison in their entirety.

Clark's main point may be that he is not very humble. I, despite my hardcore personality am not actually very egoistic. And if proven wrong will readily admit it (which many people interpret as weakness and then get all surprised when they are bleeding in the brain from receiving both barrells when they try to use my apparent "weakness' to make unjust gains).

I think Clark suffers more from a "I am never really wrong" thought pattern than people like Vox or I do. Although Vox may not make a big show of it, and sometimes may perhaps simply remain silent, I think he does readily admit being wrong, at least to himself, and this is a pivotal and important difference. Being wrong is not a weakness or necessarily puts you at a disadvantage. In many instances being wrong shows you one less path you can take to achieve something, so an be very helpful.

But SJWs will never accept their whole PREMISE is wrong. Never mind their details.

The motivation is to try and maintain their identity. They are too wrapped and too over invested in the liberal end of Libertarianism. They can't let it go.

Another example of this sort of behavior was when Jack Hunter, the so-called "Southern Avenger" turned his back on the Confederate flag. I think it's a mix of what you mentioned and also a desire to curry favor, in the hopes of getting more exposure. It's the National Review model: sell out your old or potential friends to gain the respect of people who hate you. Their sometimes libertine proclivities mean it's even easier to rationalize to their readers.

Blogger VD September 27, 2015 10:06 AM

I have absolutely no problem whatsoever admitting that I am wrong or that I am ignorant about something. As I have repeatedly pointed out, one of the reasons I am so difficult to debate is that if I know I am ignorant or I don't believe my opinion has a sufficiently strong foundation, I refuse to take a public stand. It is prodigiously stupid to believe you know everything, or even very much, and it is literally insane to believe you are not going be wrong on a regular and reliable basis.

Those who think I fetishize intelligence have no idea how strictly limited I believe human intelligence, including my own, to be. We are all blithering morons who can barely keep ourselves alive for a few decades. If we're absolutely exceptional, we might articulate or do something that will be vaguely remembered for a few more decades. Color me impressed.

This is a great time to watch one of the oldies, for those who wondered how Western culture got to where it is right now. Disinformation, cultural subversion, good stuff.

I myself was surprised that the first counter offensive that would go so well would come from the gaming community or from the publishing front.

I was inspecting the preparation and survivor community since they contain the most guns and military training. But the time never seemed right for any kind of pushback from those fronts. The majority were still going with the Waco, Waco 2, Ft Hood 1, and Ft. Hood 2 line of obeying authority.

So glad someone finally said this about Popehat: a preening blogger famous for meandering boreathons about tedious minutiae

Honestly that kind of goes for Clark, too. They all seem to have this need to digress and ramble and pontificate in ways that I would have found impressive when I was a disaffected undergraduate. They seem to have a compulsion to find some original angle that nobody else thought of, no matter how irrelevant or uninteresting that angle happens to be.

Aside: Ken White's SJWism is the sole reason I made a twitter account: https://twitter.com/blasterrvf

After an entry where he made passive-aggressive attacks on Roosh, I called out the poor quality of his sourcing and arguments, and to emphasize the point I rhetorically labeled him a "hate apologist." His only response to the comment was to accuse me (on twitter) of being a "sad Roosh fanboy" and to feign pride in the "hate apologist" moniker I'd given him.

I haven't bothered reading Popehat since then. The whole reason I commented to begin with was because so many gamergate folk seem to think Popehat is a moderate. In my experience he is adept at feigning being moderate through equivocation and doublespeak. I don't consider him a true "moderate" although I don't have a better word for it.

Blogger Robert What? September 27, 2015 12:27 PM

And that's all right (all right)

She gone with the wind
Gonna go for broke tonight
And that's all night

Goodbye to you, my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and A B C's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees

Goodbye, my friend, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons out of time

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons, have all gone

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

All about your debt and if you can pay it

I am control, no way you can shake me
I am heavy debt, no way you can pay me
I am the pain and I know you can't take me

Look over your shoulder ready to run
Like a good little bitch from a smokin' gun
I am the game and I made the rules
So move on out here and die like a fool

Try to figure out what the move's gonna be
Come on over, sucka why don't you ask me
Don't you forget there's a price you can pay
'Cause I am the game and I want to play

It's time to play the game
