The NFL opener

This is your weekly open NFL thread. I'm disappointed the Vikes aren't playing until tomorrow night, but it will be good to see some football again anyhow, Roger Goodell notwithstanding.

Less politics, more football. How hard is that?

And if you don't like football, that's nice. No one asked for your opinion. Go talk about how much you don't like it somewhere else. We don't care.

you do have a point; futbol is godawful boring to watch.

more ontopic, i see that Pournelle has arrived at much the same conclusion about Deflategate that i had.

IF deflating the balls is a big deal
THEN the Patriots should have been forfeited against the Colts
ALSO, the NFL needs to tighten up their oversight of the ballbags quite a bit AND start testing the balls during the games

IF deflating the balls is NOT a big deal
THEN why are we trying to suspend a guy that we can't even prove had anything directly to do with deflating the balls?

IF, as has been bandied about, the NFL was trying to run a sting operation on the Patriots
THEN
- why didn't the officials do a better job of tracking the ball bag?
- why weren't the balls retested as soon as they were found to have been removed from the supervision of the officials?
- why weren't penalties assessed before the first kickoff OR ( since it was discovered at halftime ) for the start of the 2nd half?

rather than own up to their own fuckups, the NFL is fixated on finding a scapegoat and kicking him.

Another season for my Redskins to disappoint? Maybe. Dan Snyder still owns the team. But damn it all, I am enthusiastic and positive. Go Skins!

:)

Gonna be a great season.

Bearsss

And I heard Goodell is supposed to be attending it today, so we will no doubt get some politics as they pan over to him.

Not a promising season for my Bears but anything will be better than the last 6 weeks or so of last season and its soap opera level of drama. Our only chance today is to come out and surprise the Packers. Though it didn't work that well for the Steelers, so I am expecting similar results. Just want them to keep it under 10 points. Baby steps in a rebuild and all that.

Hell, a multi-billion dollar sport with paid referees and the home team still brings the game balls?

Blogger So Meh September 13, 2015 11:58 AM

I will be trying the NFL's Game Pass this year vs. the traditional Direct TV's Sunday Ticket to watch my Chicago Bears games and other out of market games this year. Only $99 vs. a lot $$$$ more...downside...not able to watch the early game broadcast(s) live until ~ 4 pm (pacific coast time). will need to go into a turtle shell mode and try to stay away from the scores until later on Sunday afternoon. Good thing I have the swimming pool and soon some nice weather to enjoy my mountain bike. Very nice feature of the service is the "condensed" broadcast...able to watch an entire game ~ 40 minutes...yes 40 minutes. so Go Bears! expecting another 9-7 season and let the good Lord hear our prayers and this be Cutlers last season. (P.S. Free 7 day trail if you want to try out the NFL Game Pass service this weekend/week)

The Rugby World Cup starts this Friday: England vs Fiji.

Expect England to win but be pushed hard by a spirited Fijian side desperate for some respect in the 15 man game.

No sign of any women playing at half-back in this encounter.

Bob you should put in for Goodell's job with that fine rhetoric re deflated balls. Such a fresh and new perspective.

Actually anybody that's listened to radio or watched TV or been online the last six months has heard the same shit a million times. Move on please.

Even when the Vikings do take the field, it's not guaranteed they'll be running full out every play. Randy Moss isn't the only guy who plays when he wants to play. Yes, I'm bitter. At least now that the sparkle-punter is gone, I won't have to worry about them changing the uniform color to lavender.

no, *each team* brings / preps the balls that they use on offense. the Colts also prepped their own balls for that game.

this was a rule change that was advocated for by Peyton Manning, as each QB likes the balls to feel 'his way'.

There was some football Thursday night, but I'm looking forward to seeing some defense finally. Goodell's a moron, I don't know how many more years the NFL has, so I'm going to enjoy it while it's there.

Go Hawks

OpenID mickoneverything September 13, 2015 12:25 PM

I expect the new york football giants to be excellent on offense and paper bag bad on defense. Should be a fun team to watch. Currently I am still soaking in the intoxicant of the out-of-nowhere juggernaut the Mets turned into in baseball, so I won't be turning my full attention to football for a bit yet.

Anonymous Jack Amok September 13, 2015 12:27 PM

So Meh, I had GameRewind last year (what got renamed/rolled into GamePass). It's great as long as you don't mind not seeing the game live. Condensed is awesome. Takes a little getting used to, but really great. They could do a few things to make it better though (let you switch between regular and condensed while keeping the same game position).

Blogger Floyd Looney September 13, 2015 12:54 PM

I haven't really been interested in football lately, even Thug League Football Although from headlines it looks like the Dallas Cowboys are going to stink, they might go 8-8 if they are lucky, They lost a good RB, they did nothing to back up Romo, the secondary is probably going to be worse, if that's possible. The O-line seems pretty good though.

Anonymous fish September 13, 2015 12:56 PM

Since Oakland and SF seem to have exchanged places on the pending criminal charges tote board (Aldon Smith excepted) I'm going to give the Raiders a little attention this season. Plus I always liked Jack Del Rio.

Anonymous Goodnight September 13, 2015 1:05 PM

The Cowboys O-line may be one of the best in the league, but losing such a good RB to a division rival is going to hurt. Their season is going to depend on whether they can still put together a decent running game like last year.

Still, my buddy and I both have them picked to win the division. As a lifelong Cowboy fan I hope we're right, but that also tells you just how bad the NFC East is this year.

I don't get it. Why does any idiot care what the air pressure is in a football? Its not science. Its not like they are fiddling with some experimental protocol.

If both teams have to use the same football that might be one thing, but they don't. It's not like one team is going to practice playing with a deflated football and suddenly make 7 TDs in every game. Deflategate is prolefeed.

It was them, after all, who blackmailed the city, threatening to move the team unless the local political cucks raised local taxes by $100 million or so to build a new stadium so the team would be even more profitable. What city? Not telling. Nor can you tell since virtually every NFL team has pulled the same crap over the past several decades. Not to be that guy that puts way too much emphasis on small amounts of data, but the Tampa Bay - Titans clash is the perfect showcase for both the black qb deniers and the college vs. pro level of necessity for having leadership and brains in addition to talent.

So far Mariota has calmly led a 75 yard TD drive and the very next sequence Winston goes pic-6.

positive denis and YIH -- ever heard of the internet? IT's not hard to get games anywhere. Heck it's often easier to get whole leagues when demand in a country is small. You get every Premier league game for free in the US (Every game) whereas it is insanely expensive in Britain. I would imagine a legal option in Italy probably costing less than a hundred bucks for every game.

From the post-game conference, apparently that was a screw-up. It was supposed to be a down-field bloop kick to keep it away from Mason but Hauschka duffed it.

Seattle should have tried a two yard slant pass if they wanted to go for the TD. Handing off to Lynch with one yard to go is never a guarantee....

(Carroll was right to go for the win: tying it in OT with your defense sucking and Rams only needing a fg would have been almost certain defeat.)

4 TDs for Mariota in first half. If he isn't careful and TB blows even harder, he might set his entire career mark for TDs in a game in his first career game. Based on the smell of TB and Winston looking clueless, there's a good chance he hits six before being pulled early 4th.

Well the Bears put a respectable effort on against a Superior opponent. Rodgers does miss Jody Nelson. He was flushed out to the right a couple times and had to walk it out of the sideline because Jody wasn't there 15 yards down the field open like he always is.

I knew Saint Louis wasn't going to be a team to mess with, especially not in their house. Broncos-Ravens... who would have thought that Flacco + Manning = no offense. Manning is looking like he should have retired. I don't know how he is going to make with through the season.

Interesting to see how he develops over the season. with that defense if the Rams can get any kind of consistent offense they should win a lot of games.

The rule I have is as long as I see the kids choosing to do things besides computers/xbox/etc, their time isn't limited (well, also assuming they are putting appropriate effort into studies). But if all I see them doing with their spare time is video games, they face 1 hr/day restrictions. Or perhaps zero hours/day if they seem like they really need to dry out.

Most pumdits both in Aus amd the USA were very cynical about his chances, but so far he's proven them all wrong. Here's his pre-season highlights: https://youtu.be/CDiiI1Nn61E

"OT - how many hours of video games per week is reasonable for a 12 year old boy that lives for Destiny and Halo? Curious on the Ilk's perspective."

our kids have a lot of chores and such to do around the house. But once all of that is done... their time is their own. Kinda like real life.

Some days they get up and just bust their asses and everything is done by 11am. On those days... the reward for that is getting to play a lot of video games or whatever. It would be counter-productive to get in the way of that pay-off.

Trying hard isn't enough. Getting the job done right is enough. So when they get the job done right... I make sure they get the reward.

The only thing I watch out for is sometimes if they've played a lot together they can end up fighting. That's the only time I step in.

Well, the Rams game was a bag of mixed signals. They did their usual "fall apart in the 4th quarter" bit, but then also somehow managed to come back from their mistakes and win, which is something they hadn't been able to do in years past. Foles' accuracy seemed way off at time (throwing behind WRs on the slants, putting up passes along the sideline that were to far out of bounds for the receiver to get to, etc), but then he throws flawless bombs like that pass in OT that put them in FG range.

I really can't decide whether to be optimistic or not. Going from an 11 point lead to a 7 point deficit by giving up two back-to-back fumbles immediately returned for touchdowns is a very bad sign. But the offense was able to score when it counted (minute left in the game and then on the first drive of OT) and the defense was able to stop when needed.

Yeah. I did most of the leveling since the patch for the Taken King. I probably play a bit too much, but it is very fast with the daily quests, about 2-3 levels each time. MUCH faster than the waiting for drops and getting my hunter to 34. I just need gear now, but that should come.

I still get overwhelmed when they show up all over the place, but even the swarm of hive is not a big problem now. (2nd or 3rd mission.

Hey, give Stedman Bailey some credit. :)

I see that Chip Kelly's gambling during the off season seems to be paying off...damn. Still no defense, though.

C'mon ray, middle school girls could do better than that.

I really can't decide whether to be optimistic or not.

Yeah, really strange game from the Seahawk's side too. Some good, but a lot of bad. I was impressed with the Ram's open field tackling though. You can't always count on a DB falling down for an easy TD, but with that defense, you shouldn't need that very often. And the 49ers didn't look like a complete dumpster fire tonight. Should be an interesting year in the NFC West.

It feels weird when the Seahawks are the only ones in the NFC West that lost on opening weekend, and yet are still favored to make it to the Super Bowl. Just goes to prove that opening weekend means almost nothing.

Still, though, I was as surprised as you were by the Niners.
