The schizo is back

As some of you know, I have some high-level contacts at certain technology companies. It occurred to me that this is a good opportunity to convince them that some changes need to be made to their comment system, so for the time being I've removed the Name/URL and Anonymous commenting options. This means you will have to be registered in order to comment. We may eventually go to a system where you will have to be a member of the blog in order to have commenting privileges.

The advantage of this is that trolls and schizos will no longer be able to pretend to be other commenters. My hope is that I will be able to take the evidence and convince Google to make some of the changes I have been recommending to them that will permit us to go back to a more open commenting system, albeit one that gives the moderators more precise and targeted moderation abilities.

Interesting. Although in principle I prefer the name/url option, I switched to using a google profile when your offensively robophobic spam system went into effect. It didn't bother me.

Blogger Shimshon September 20, 2015 5:21 AM

Oh dear.

Blogger SS September 20, 2015 5:24 AM

Was he not arrested the other day, or does it take several instances like this for anything to really be done via that statute you mentioned in TN law?

Blogger Shimshon September 20, 2015 5:29 AM

@5 I would honestly prefer the police to deal in more paced manner for non-violent incidents like this where the chance of phsyical harm is near zero than the increasingly more common alternative of guns-blazing no-knock raids. Eventually they'll tire of this and through his ass in jail. Or forced medical assistance. Or something positive for him. Hopefully not injury or death.

Blogger Shimshon September 20, 2015 5:29 AM

This being said after seeing 71 comments before they were spammed. On second thought...

Blogger Steve September 20, 2015 5:32 AM

SS - dunno if Tennessee has anything like the Mental Health Act, but if not, they need one.

Blogger VD September 20, 2015 5:32 AM

The policeman talked to the DA and apparently even though there were threats and they were vulgar and obscene, the fact that they were made on an open forum rather than directly via email means that they are not necessarily considered harassment of a particular individual. They're keeping an eye on him, of course, due to the concern that his obsession will eventually shift to a more vulnerable target.

So, I'm just continuing to compile them and then I'll send them to my friends at Google along with an explanation of how they could easily prevent this sort of behavior with a few changes to their comment system.

This is really no big deal. Remember, Andrew Marston waged his campaign for five years and used more than 50 different identities. Spooner has only left 2,238 comments in the last few days. I'd send it to his employer, but of course, he's unemployed.

Blogger VD September 20, 2015 5:35 AM

This is what happens when you don't lock up the crazies. Everybody has to deal with this sort of thing from time to time. Even PZ Myers had a particularly crazy one fixated on him.

Blogger Steve September 20, 2015 5:35 AM

Hopefully when they do throw Spoogie in the nut house, they'll give him an Etch-a-Sketch and tell him it's the internet.

Blogger Shimshon September 20, 2015 6:15 AM

@11 Steve, don't knock Etch-a-Sketch technology! My device has 100% uptime. It never fails. It can take a lot of physical abuse. It is immune from any and all attempts to remote hijacking. What other modern device can claim such a record?

Blogger Cail Corishev September 20, 2015 7:16 AM

That's great news, even though it'll make obsolete parts of what I'm working on. They can do a far better job of moderation on the back end, and it'll make the output more consistent for the other things we want to do.

Blogger Hammerli280 September 20, 2015 7:17 AM

Sad. Especially since I found name/url useful for anonymity.

Simple exposure is WORSE for 90% (he said under pseudonym. Wait...wait..."nom de plume")

SERIOUSLY?
OK, I SUPPOSE up 'til the"I AM going to see how this thing works!" (pre google, but who cares?) point in life.
In hindsight, I learned to put a towel or something over "sealed" things I was going to smash open to see what was the "magic" inside. (*ahem* spray paint can "rattler". PRO TIP: glass marble)

Even though he named you and referenced your wife. Sounds like a heaping pile of "We don't want to do anything" rather than "We can't do anything".

That sounds... ridiculous.

Then again, it may only be illegal for certain people to be threatened.

Blogger Jack Ward September 20, 2015 8:58 AM

I like the idea of the commenting system having a duel layer defense. 1. Any banned URL comments are auto-deleted as they come in. And, of course, the required registration. I use my full and real name here. I don't care who knows. And, you never know, someone might just try to harass me. And, like the immortal Jubal Harshaw of Stranger in a Strange Land, who sometimes answered his phone, I might have a chance to be rude to some deserving stranger.

Blogger W.LindsayWheeler September 20, 2015 9:00 AM

In this day and age, I would think you can charge the computer Spooner is using as an accessory to crime and take it away from him. He obviously needs an outlet for his psychosis. The police need to do more. If I stood on a public sidewalk and harassed a certain homeowner over and over, they would charge him with breaking the peace and stalking. I don't see it no different than an open forum.

In this case, we know that he did recover his stability for a good while. So maybe it's for the best to ride out the storm, and hope he gets a grip again in the near future.

Blogger rycamor September 20, 2015 10:21 AM

I would be tempted to create a blogging system that, in addition to keeping the browser footprint and IP address range, had a "quarantine" mode, where the crazies can keep on commenting, but they are the only ones who see their own comments.

Of course the dog in the manger has a Google account, and now he's just using that to comment.

Nate will be fine. This is the most tremendous year for the SEC, just like always.

And yes, Ole Miss got a touchdown on an illegal pass play, but Bama got an onside on a ridiculous invalid recovery to keep them in at all.

I'm a fan of Coker now. The sleeping Tide fan shots in the 3rd were hilarious.

Yes, Alabama and schizophrenia are related topics.

Stay strong, Nate.

No biggie on the registering thing. Awhile back when the captcha thing changed to pictures I couldn't get it to work for me. It took me like 2 minutes to set up a Google account.

OpenID thenatem September 20, 2015 12:26 PM

the membership theory worked for SomethingAwful. They charged something nominal like 5 dollars a year to comment on the forum, and it tamped down the trolls considerably. Lowtax reasoned someone who might repeatedly come back and register new names would be far less likely to do so if they had to pay every time they did it (nominal as it is, it'd add up). Also they used a permaban for the frequent offenders so if they tried to register again, pay or no, they'd be rebanned.

The supreme irony of calling their backgroundwashing site "implicit" intrigues me. Are they flipping the bird, or just oblivious?

https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html

Every "question" in their "test" requires rejecting one or more of the premises, a rhetorical sleight quite beyond their targeted audience. The purpose of the artifact is to impart and fortify those premises. So don't be too hard on the kids. This very professional brainwashing is their everyday reality.

No, it tamped down on sane people using the site. The trolls merely left after they realized that the regular audience now became more insane and toxic than even the worst trolls. Even trolls have standards.
