Fortunately, he apologized

Was said of no public figure in the last decade:
Dr. Marcy was mentioned only a few weeks ago as a potential Nobel Prize honoree. But he also left a trail of complaints and rumors about inappropriate behavior over the years.

This summer, in response to a formal complaint by four former students, the University of California concluded that Dr. Marcy had violated its policies on sexual harassment. The violations, spanning 2001 to 2010, included groping students, kissing them and touching or massaging them inside their clothes.

Dr. Marcy was informed that another harassment violation would leave him subject to immediate suspension or dismissal — a decision that was not widely known until BuzzFeed News reported it last week.

On the eve of the report’s release, Dr. Marcy posted an apology on his website, disagreeing with some aspects of the harassment complaints but saying he took responsibility. “It is difficult to express how painful it is for me to realize that I was a source of distress for any of my women colleagues, however unintentional,” he said.

But his apology and the university’s response were widely seen as not enough and lacking in sensitivity to the victims of his actions, some of whom have since left astronomy. The Committee on the Status of Women in Astronomy declined his request that the apology be published in its newsletter, according to the Women in Astronomy blog.
Houston, we have convergence! Anyhow, just in case it's not clear, an apology is not going to save you.

“This should put sexual harassers on notice: No one is too big to fail,” Joan Schmelz, a former chairwoman of the American Astronomical Society’s Committee on the Status of Women in Astronomy, said on Wednesday.

Nothing, NOTHING, is more important than preventing insufficiently attractive men from touching women. Not science. And certainly not astronomy!

It's easier to blame "sexual harassment" than to acknowledge your own inability/unwillingness to pass the requisite math and core physics courses.

Ah, right, it's that thing where an apology is a confession.

On the upside? Hysterical posts from the Joan Schmelz character.

Perv or not he loves women! He doesn't wear a dress but should not have said sorry - ever - at all. Never apologize for a SJW tactic or say sorriesfeelzbadzmeaculpaz over such minor matters. He can move on to another gig, right? Can he keep his pension, hopefully so.

He should have taken his love interests whom appears were willing as well, outside of campus or outside of work.

Overall, men are not allowed to men and women are not allowed to be attractive.

@5,

As Evan points out we can't be sure about this. Did he actually do anything? Did he do something consensual that was later regretted (in which case I'm shaming him in public and doing the same to my daughter; she doesn't get out of this one)?

Based on his response I lean towards the latter. And if that is the case it is hardly worth the amount of publicity that it is getting.

And if it was a consensual act he should be apologizing not to me, but to the family in question. But Berkeley...so...probably an "empowered" young woman.

Cultural Marxists love public apologies because it validates their warped view of the world. It hasn't changed from the very comparable showtrials of dissenters in 1930s USSR. Don't give it to them. Starve the beast.

We had a talk from one of the Dutch executives about market challenges and he went off script a bit and expounded on the problem with Chinese economic planning. They have one guy that is told to produce all of a product possible and keep producing and another that is told to sell all of it. No foresight to demand, just keep pumping it out. The Chinese are doubling global production of our product (Nylon monomer) with new Chinese plants coming online in the next year just as demand is dropping, and it has been flat for almost a decade. We are our own worst enemy.

SJWs use this one weird trick. So, I'll confess to all even semi-attractive women: We are thinking about your tits. If you suddenly attack, accusing us of thinking about your tits, many of us will reflexively respond with "Sorry, what? No more goat soup!" And then the damage is done, the apology is out, and the butt-hurt is about to set in and metastasise. Luckily, my alien genetics kicks in differently, and the shit-eating grin and double-down is triggered, but I can sympathize with the gamma (while appreciating the comedy: stupid people are just inherently funny).

Did you read the BuzzFeed article?
------

I know he's a guy and that pulls weight here but that doesn't mean he's innocent. I read what I could find before I came to a conclusion. He has questionable ethics.

Lets say the 4 women lied. And the male prof that stated he saw Marcy in inappropriate behavior, lets say he lied too. Why didn't Marcy fight it? It was a 6 month long investigation, he had a lawyer, why didn't he threaten to sue for slander?

Let's say the women weren't lying but it was consensual at the time. Marcy had more to lose than the students if it ever came out. He has a wife and had a great career. Even a dog knows not to shit where it eats.

It is worth noting that apologies are not admissible in court under the rules of evidence precisely because they are construed as an admission of guilt.

Never admit guilt to anything you do not wish to be punished for.

Congratulations, those of you who have managed to miss the point. It is totally irrelevant whether the astronomer concerned was guilty of the actions of which he was accused or not. I neither know nor care about his case. The sole point being made here is that his apology observably did not help him survive the campaign against him.

Therefore, this is further evidence is that those who believe an apology will help them survive an attack against them are wrong.

Noted that as Vox said, the point of the post was that apologies never save anyone, even a SJW, I'd still like to add my own response to #5 BunE22.

I'm also a mom, albeit of 2 sons. From my experience with them, all the chasing and "harassment" and lies come from the girls, not the guys. From my working experience since age 13, no one can "harass" a girl who refuses to be harassed. Even you are a teenage babysitter, you can/should instinctively know right from wrong and can simply say "No." I've worked with high-powered men to whom I was attracted (and those to whom I was not but who openly propositioned me - and I'm no 8-10 in SMV). I've simply said "No thank you." One of them, I read years later, was sued for sexual harassment. He flirted quite openly, but never did anything if/when I took exception and made my preferences clear in a non-bitchy way. I had one friend in college who dated a professor many considered "hot" (I never took a class with him) and later married him. I had a friend in grad school who was asked out by a professor to whom she said "No thanks" (she was semi-engaged to someone). I've had come-ons which were a total shock to me (I didn't think I was behaving in any way other than merely friendly) but that I still said "No thank you" to. In each case, the men (all White and western) accepted my refusal graciously. In one case (much older spouse of an aunt's best friend), my own mother didn't believe me when I mentioned the open proposition years later.

If one is dealing with non-White, non-western men, all bets are off as far as their accepting a refusal or not using physical force. Otherwise, "no" is a simple word and a clear, definite, but non-hostile refusal a simple thing to make clear.

Men and women working together are going to experience sexual attraction - some reciprocated and some not. I'm tired of the assumption all girls/women are fragile angels who have no agency and no ability to learn or utilize Christian ethics.

they said employees are to immediately take responsibility for any and all complaints made against them, even if they disagree

One hospital I was at came out with a policy of giving goodie baskets to all complainers, this was a place that would have fights break out in the ER waiting room, & had an employee raped in the parking facilities. I checked the hospitals intranet comment/complaint the week after a big ER WR fight and the only positive comment for the entire system was that one ER doctor was handsome, but because they blocked out the name people teased him that it was a guy. When I heard the basket giveaway policy, I said if I ever come here I will get one with the complaint of not getting a complainer's basket. It wouldn't have happened though because it was a place I wouldn't want to be caught dead in.

Faggotry.

My "apology" for shirtgate would have been to hire a dozen strippers, wear the shirt with no pants and with my dick swinging dance to MC Hammer's "you can't touch this" while the strippers strip and make appropriately "wowed" expressions and gestures at my enormous patriarchial penis. I would have releases the "apology" on vimeo.

For this one my "apology" would be as follows:

"Due to the facts that I have astronomically sized testicles, the ineptitute of some ugly and stupid women who have been unable to get the male attention they crave and as a result have become rabidly insane, the hydrophobic attentions of feminists and their toxic ideology have been inflamed to the point that I am being labelled a sexual harrasser. This outrageous lie, constructed by mental infirms, is not only false on the objective merits, but also false in any case, as my preferred way to receive female attention is when they are willingly on their knees worshipping my large balls by gently and deeply sucking on my similalrly enormous penis. Rest assured that I would no more stick my cock in an unwilling female mouth than I would in a rebar cutting machine. Therefore, to avoid any confusion, allow me to clarify that no female colleague or student is henceforth allowed to ever benefit from sucking my dick. The administrators, harridans, radfems and pussified lesbian-serving male feminists, hower, can all still avail themselves of having their face cockslapped. As this is as close to anything sexual as these sad land-whales will ever get, I expect to have a full inbox imminently. Applications in writing only please."

I think that would do it.
