NFL open thread

A bit late on this one, but I just fired up the Vikings game. I didn't see the early games, so discuss amongst yourselves.

The DC Perpetual Losers managed to pull victory from the jaws of defeat. A few more times, and they might become worthy to be called Redskins.

End of the London game was an embarrassment for the league. Just when it got interesting, the refs started throwing flags like crazy. Through the first 3 weeks, the NFL is on a record pace for penalties called.

Blogger luagha October 04, 2015 4:54 PM

I don't know what it is specifically about today, but at the gym, in the cardio room, there was a crowd of about seven guys watching the game while working the machines. Actively commenting on the game. And a friendly senior citizen, in normal non-workout clothes, sitting on a recumbent exercise bike, watching the multiple games on the big screens with the gang.

Never saw that before. The magic of sports. And the magic of the 'third place.'

Blogger Cail Corishev October 04, 2015 5:07 PM

Speaking of the Redskins, from what I'm hearing, it sounds like ESPNFL and the other networks are quietly trying to change the name against the team's wishes by refusing to say it. Steve Czaban (a Redskins fan) spotted a couple instances of announcers awkwardly shoehorning the city in place of the name, in phrases like, "the Bears, Cowboys, Washington, and Jaguars."

Looks like one of those things where there's probably not an official "conspiracy" in the sense that there's probably not a smoking gun memo from a central office telling them all to do it, but they're falling in line due to group-think. I don't know how universal it is yet, but it'll be interesting to see if they're able to "unperson" Chief Zee (the best part is he's a black man).

Blogger Tank October 04, 2015 5:29 PM

Remarkably, if the Giants had not given away two games, they would be 4 & 0.

Blogger Floyd Looney October 04, 2015 5:31 PM

I'm afraid to look... why are the Saints favored over the Cowboys...

Blogger Alex Van Der Hengst October 04, 2015 5:52 PM

Wow, Peyton is really struggling to throw the ball. That pick was horrible.

Go Bears.

I didn't notice the pink during the London game. If that is going to be the case then I immediately lobby the NFL to have the entire month of October played in Europe.

Will Best

that's been going on since last year, when Obama's trademark office threw out Snyder's trademark rights on the name.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/us-patent-office-cancels-redskins-trademark-registration-says-name-is-disparaging/2014/06/18/e7737bb8-f6ee-11e3-8aa9-dad2ec039789_story.html

i thought it had actually tapered off somewhat.

but, clearly, the only option is to refer to the Washington exclusively as the 'Redskins'.

especially if you're NOT talking about football.

the "Redskin Wizards", "Redskin Nationals", "Redskins United", etc.

make it so.

Blogger Jack Ward October 04, 2015 6:44 PM

Falcons handled the Texans handily. Undefeated. Maybe they are good this year?
Patent office cancelled a trademark? I would say Supreme Court time. Just who is the patent office to pass such a judgement? Oh, of course, its obama's patent office. How silly of me.

Blogger Cunning Dove October 04, 2015 6:53 PM

How long do we have to wait to fireour defensive coordinator for the Texans? I know our offense handed the ball over like Halloween candy, but the defense was parting like the Red Sea for the Falcons running game.

I'm not positive, but I thought ESPN had sent out a memo saying not to use "Redskins" on air. I certainly can't remember hearing anyone on ESPN use it for a while, and I've heard a lot of their on-air talent say "Washington Football Team" in a tone that makes me think they're subtly protesting. Could be my imagination though.

You're in line behind the Seattle and Detroit fan bases wanting to fire Offensive Coordinators, and San Francisco (if they had any sense) wanting to fire their entire coaching staff.

Blogger Daniel October 04, 2015 7:50 PM

Denver offense is playing about as poorly as they did in their last Super Bowl - a massive blowout...and winning. People are saying this will catch up with them. It might. I think otherwise: that winning this ugly early will pay dividends late. If they get a few home games in the playoffs, they are going to be a tough, tough out, especially if Manning figures out when and why his arm goes wobbly, and stops making those passes.

Gut punch for the Vikings, but man they did not quit when they would have in the past.

Despite Peyton's best attempts, the Denver D didn't give the game away, despite that terrible play against Peterson on 4th and 1.

Seriously, Peyton looks more done burnt toast.

Blogger allyn71 October 04, 2015 8:09 PM

Yeah he looked awful QB'ing the game winning drive for a 4-0 team.

Blogger Nate October 04, 2015 8:11 PM

also... rumors of Alabama's demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Blogger BassmanCO October 04, 2015 8:13 PM

@17

I am a Broncos fan. I want him to do well. For quite a few plays in that game, he looked like shite. If he doesn't put the Defense in crap situations, the Broncos roll.

He isn't overly athletic (look at how he just falls down on sacks to protect his neck) and doesn't have quite the arm he used to. If his decision making has slipped too much, will he really come through in the playoffs when we need him to?

Blogger roundeye October 04, 2015 8:17 PM

Bears win a meaningless game. Horray.

Tank, tank, tank, sell forte for a 3d round pick.

Blogger Guitar Man October 04, 2015 8:22 PM

Yeah, Nate. Sorta like Dilfer on Brady and the Patriots last year. Dominant teams take a long time to fall.

Blogger allyn71 October 04, 2015 8:26 PM

@ BassmanCO Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, sincerely a life long Cleveland fan.

Peyton may be getting up there but he is still in top ten for QB's in the league. Enjoy it, they are not going to be able to hold that team together much longer.

Someday soon you might Johnny Football and Josh McCown fighting it out for your starting QB job.

Blogger Raggededge #0057 October 04, 2015 8:30 PM

I understand. We have the Nuggets and Rockies.

Blogger YIH October 04, 2015 8:48 PM

@7. Alex Van Der Hengst:
I suspect this is Payton Manning's last shot.
His body is broken down. However this season goes, it will quite likely be his last.
Props to the Vikes, they kept it close. The the Broncos have a good 'D', but their offense is struggling.
The Colts are clearly not the team that made it to the AFC Championship last year, in fact I doubt they will even make the playoffs.
Their Luck was out (literally). Sorry, can't avoid it, not even going to try. They just barely got past the Jaguars.

Blogger Cail Corishev October 04, 2015 9:30 PM

It's going to be a race to see if Peyton's accuracy and skill can get him through the season before his noodle arm gives out. So far so good. He looked terrible for most of the KC game, throwing several that bounced off KC hands, and it took 5 KC turnovers to give him a chance to win it, but a win's a win.

Blogger Cecil Henry October 04, 2015 9:33 PM

So there is hope for now... Or maybe someone just didn;t get the PC memo.

Lets hope its the former.

Bob Costas just pandhandled for Hillary.

I also noticed that one eye is larger than the other when he talks at the camera. Makes him look weird

I also don't like the way he talks. You should only talk like that when it's the 1940s, and America is great.

If he were weird that'd be ok. But he's an ideological shill, and that isn't ok.

CostUS and Co. think pink football players are awesome, so he got some in his eyes. During the Olympics.

The contribution of Choo Sin-Soo (batted .444 in September) for the Texas Rangers (as well as Beltre and others) cannot be overstated. But that's a whole other ballgame.

The Cowboys should have won that game, even blindfolded.

Blogger Daniel October 05, 2015 11:27 PM

Wow. Loons could not have scripted a more pathetic loss. If the defense doesn't kill the offense on the plane home, they will prove themselves worthy of sainthood.

That is even funnier.

Blogger SciVo October 05, 2015 11:58 PM

OpenID Jack Amok October 05, 2015 11:59 PM

...to Golden Tate for the Fail Mary. Warren is the ultimate homer after all.

Good grief Seahawk's O-Line is awful.

Blogger ray October 06, 2015 12:18 AM

Bad smell emanating from the Seattle area, wafting across the PNW. You play in Seattle, you have to beat the team in green AND the team in stripes.

What's the name of the stadium there? The FixODome?

Blogger Desiderius October 06, 2015 1:22 AM

We'll see how my Bengals do against the Hawks.

They've pretty much been the UGa of the NFL. Here's hoping this season is different. Lewis has always been a good teacher, but now they've got (Hue) Jackson who has a better understanding of the psychology of dominance. Plus they're healthy.

Blogger SciVo October 06, 2015 1:40 AM

Blown call? I don't know what you're talking about. Saw it over and over from different angles. One guy slowed him up, then another knocked it out before he broke the plane. Amazing athleticism and teamwork on the fly.

OpenID Jack Amok October 06, 2015 2:32 AM

SciVo, not the fumble. KJ Wright knocked the ball out of bounds. Supposed to be an "illegal bat" and ball goes back to the offense. Dumb rule (if the NFL didn't have so many absurd nitpicking rules, their refs wouldn't blow so many calls), but they should have called it.

Chancellor's play to cause the fumble was excellent.

Blogger SciVo October 06, 2015 5:52 AM

I literally have no idea what you're talking about, but since you say it's a dumb, absurd nitpicking rule, I'll take your word for it. Still an amazing physical play.

Blogger Daniel October 06, 2015 7:55 AM

It isn't a dumb rule at all. It is a very old rule that I have seen called a number of times, including high school. You can not bat the ball for advancement. Hell it got missed and noticed by the announcers recently in a Seattle game earlier this year!

Pete Carroll knew the rule instantly.

The fact that Steve Young, Trent Dilfer and Ray Lewis didn't get the rule tells you anout them, not the rule.

I have seen it called in high school this season. Live, I thought it wasn't called because maybe it just looked like the guy touched it and I didn't see a replay.

You do NOT want to see this rule eliminated unless you want live balls to turn into soccer plays.

Blogger Daniel October 06, 2015 8:06 AM

Check that, it was the Alabama Ole Miss game that it got missed in a few weeks ago, not a Seattle game.

The bigger shock to me was that so many of the ex players were completely ignorant of the rule. They have seen punters do it on muffed punts dozens of times...forgetting that the penalty is declined by the offended team 100% of the time because the result is a safety and possession.

OpenID Steve October 06, 2015 7:47 PM

I don't usually pay attention to the roid using N1663r Felon Legion but this seems to be a cause for celebration.

They must really be clamping down on the wives that get their faces punched. Shut yo moutt baitch o you wont get mo money. Maybe they need to make everyone at the NFL a mandatory reporter of domestic abuse.

Blogger ray October 07, 2015 12:10 AM

"Pete Carroll knew the rule instantly."

They interviewed Seattle players in pads on the field while discussing the mistake. The players were in the locker rooms.

Fix the mistake, pad up like men, finish the game according to the rules. Settle the game with equity and integrity.

Instead the NFL and network and announcers pretended it was Over and cucked their way thru. Everybody go home, just go home now, baaaa. :O)

The problem isn't getting the rule wrong, it's a pretty arcane rule and perhaps not uniformly enforced. The problem is stonewalling afterward, sticking to the Narrative, rather like ... hm.

Sure a lot of officially fortunate coincidences for the Seahawks at home! The NFL's cred is in the imaginary numbers, like what they pulled last Sunday. Perhaps they should hire more female Ethical Overseers? Or mebbe their influence is already manifesting.

OpenID Jack Amok October 07, 2015 1:17 AM

The bigger shock to me was that so many of the ex players were completely ignorant of the rule.

The ref standing right there watching it was ignorant of the rule. Of course, the NFL threw him under the bus within a half hour of the game ending...

I happen to think this is a dumb rule, but the more important issue is the sheer number of rules. Batting the ball is legal in some situations, illegal in others, and that's on top of a phone-book of other situational rules. Having that many rules means players, coaches and officials end up misunderstanding what is and isn't okay. (sound familiar? Should someone write a book Three Fifteen-Yards-and-an-Automatic First Downs a Day?).

Is it a good thing for a spectator sport when people spend more time arguing about whether the refs blew a call than discussing a great play to knock the ball out in the first place? Simplify the rulebook, reduce the impact of penalties, and for cryin' out loud if you're going to have replay, at least give the ref a damn tablet so he doesn't have to take the time to run across the field for a replay.
