There is no diversity crisis in tech

Repeat it, understand it, grok it, live it. There is no diversity crisis in tech.
Repeat after me: there is no “diversity crisis” in Silicon Valley. None. In fact, there is no crisis at all in Silicon Valley. Silicon Valley is doing absolutely gangbusters. Apple has $200 billion in cash reserves and equivalents — and a market valuation of about $630 billion. Amazing. Facebook now garners a billion daily users. This is a nearly unfathomable number. Google is worth nearly $450 billion and has $70 billion in cash on hand.

This is not a crisis. Silicon Valley is swimming in money and in success. Uber is valued at around $50 billion. Companies like Airbnb are remaking travel and lodging. Intel is moving forward into the global Internet of Things market. South Korea’s Samsung just opened a giant R&D facility in the heart of Silicon Valley. Google and Facebook are working to connect the entire world. Netflix is re-making how we consume entertainment.

Silicon Valley is home to the next phase of the global auto industry. Fintech and biotech are transforming banking and medicine. The success of Silicon Valley is not due to diversity — or to any bias. Rather, to brilliance, hard work, risk taking, big ideas and money.

Want to be part of this? Great! Follow the example of the millions who came before you. Their parents made school a priority. They took math and science classes, and did their homework every night. They practiced ACT tests over and over. They enrolled in good schools and focused on English, Political Science and Humanities.

Okay, that last bit is not true. They took computer programming, engineering, chemistry — hard subjects that demand hard work. They then left their home, their family, their community, and moved to Silicon Valley. They worked hard, staying late night after night. They didn’t blog, they didn’t let their skills go stale, they didn’t blame others when not everything worked out exactly as hoped.
Are you doing all of these? Are you doing any of these? Do them!
The "diversity crisis" is a fake crisis manufactured by SJW parasites who want to leech off the success of others. Tech doesn't need more women. Tech doesn't need more blacks, American Indians, Eskimos, walruses, penguins, or meerkats.

And, as the Impossibility of Social Justice Convergence predicts, as the observation of previous diversity crises will demonstrate, the continued success of tech actually depends upon IGNORING those who are attempting to sell the diversity crisis scam and actively RESISTING all of their "solutions".

We all know IQ only matters when a non Asian minority is facing the death penalty. All the people saying the Mexican that raped 8yo white girl Madison to death in San Fran, and was seen on CCTV tossing her body into a dumpster, is too stupid to go on CA's death row for the rest of his life, would be slandering any employer that said he was too stupid to work. Do leftists really not see the brown "dot" Indians in tech? The funny thing is the tech company with the most die verse city is the one that made the Obamacare website.

Diversity is a value-subtracted activity. You force unlike cultures into the same "open concept" cube farm to crank out work, and you'll be in the red by month's end.

When some tech company pushes for diversity, it is merely attempting to artificially drive down short-term labor costs. Period.

I just noticed Beavers are missing from that list. Does tech need more beavers?

Life cycle of a silicone valley company
1. Asian/white guys with ideas get together
2. Work 60+ hours a week for no/low pay
3. Profitably produce product people voluntarily purchase
4. Realize hiring a black/Hispanic female illiterate crack addict is a cost saving measure that fits 3 boxes.

OT: Harvard loses debate to team of inmates

Washington Post write up:
Last month, a debate team of three inmates with violent criminal records defeated a team of three Harvard University undergraduates.

and what was the subject of the debate?

The latest debate, about whether public schools should have the ability to deny enrollment to undocumented students, was described by the Journal as “fast-moving.”

In the end, the inmates presented an elaborate argument with which they personally disagreed, essentially telling judges that if the children were denied admission, then nonprofits and wealthier schools would pick up the slack, according to the Journal.

-----------------------

So remember folks, the arguments for subsidizing invasion are so weak that inmates taking correspondence courses can beat Harvard at rhetoric/dialectic. What's the GOP's excuse?

So my alma mater called me looking for donations for scholarships and stuff. On-topic: One thought about tech hiring is that credentials/certs are a pre-condition for HR to work their diversity magic. If you have two candidates, and the hiring manager wants to tip the scales getting someone who has a lot of certs vs someone with a portfolio is easier. Two extremes would be Google's hiring practice of hard interview questions vs. how the federal gov't does hiring (i.e. KSA's) and as Steve Sailer noted the lack of a civil service exam (disparite impact). The more bureaucratic the hiring process the easier it is for non-factors to swing hiring.

As I've said before, the claim that women are being "kept out of tech" by the industry's members isn't just a regular lie, it's a complete inversion of the truth, day for night. It's one of those lies that people only believe because it's so blatant that people don't look at it closely; if it were smaller, they'd see through it.

Not only does the industry not exclude women; it rolls out the red carpet for them. A woman who actually wants to write code or even hang out with guys who write code is feted and praised to the heavens. (There are some with actual skills, but you can't tell them from the others without seeing their work, because every female who shows up gets the maximum praise by default.)

Anyone who's been in a room full of computer geeks when a girl walked in knows this. Anyone who's been in an IRC channel when someone with a female name enters knows this. Heck, anyone who's ever seen the memes about "geek girls" or heard the joke about how there are no women on the Internet should be able to infer it.

The only people keeping women out of tech are the women themselves, who have about as much desire to work in the field as most men have to attend a combination quilting bee and baby shower.

Steve Sailer's written extensively about the large number of female programmers in the pre-pc (personal computer) era. IIRC his conclusion was that once programming became a geeky thing weird losers did at home, women lost interest.

Exactly, because the "problem" was never one of profit or success. Mr. Hall, while correct, is missing the point.

Blogger Cail Corishev October 07, 2015 1:43 PM

Josh, I think Steve's partly right about that. But the other (in my opinion bigger) part is that programming has gotten more abstract. Those women were programming in languages like COBOL which were highly procedural -- small step 1, small step 2, small step 3 -- or declarative -- here's the layout for the data, now fetch these records and fill in the fields.

As languages have gotten more powerful, they've gotten more abstract. You can do a lot more in fewer lines, but it's harder to understand how. Recursion, functional programming, references/pointers, complex structures, and other modern features are pretty challenging, and sometimes you have to build a lot of logic in your head to produce the one line of code that performs it. That requires not just smarts, but a structured, logical, perhaps "male" way of thinking that most women don't enjoy, if they're capable of grokking it at all.

Nothing wrong with that. I can't have babies, though I guess I do have the right to have babies, just as women have a right to be programmers.

Blogger Jill October 07, 2015 2:12 PM

It's hard to force women to want to be in tech. That's probably the biggest hurdle. After 30 yrs of trying, my local tech school managed to shrink the percentage discrepancy to 65% male 35% female, and that was after adding biology, psychology, and business management. But then, other colleges require about half the math for their psychology degree, which still makes this an undesirable school for your average psychology student.

@25 Josh:
"the large number of female programmers in the pre-pc (personal computer) era"

Women dominated early programming because computer input required typing, and typing was a woman's job. I remember the days when executives would have their secretaries type out their email.

Those computers turned out to be coal powered punch card readers. The women's jobs where more like making paper for self playing pianos. Also there was no time crunch as the wait to run your program took away any advantage of someone that could program twice as fast, the faster you went the longer you would wait in the coffee drinking gossip area. Right you are. Guess what - it's considerably more difficult to program complex 3D models, multi-core, multi-threaded games, and build complex immersive worlds than it was to operate punch card, functionally programmed systems of the late 70's and early 80's. By the time multi-user systems really started grow in power and complexity, the long slide of female irrelevancy began.

I used to have an OS fetish. Shameful, I know. But I was in love with Amiga Workbench 1.3, distressing blue-and-orange colour scheme and all. It had multitasking, which was an important point for us Amiga fanboys in explaining why our computers were better than crappy Windoze machines.

Then Workbench 2.1 came out with its super-cool blue and grey look and built-in hypertext capabilities, and I felt like I had the computer from the Entetprise D at my disposal, with a 40MB hard drive that could store as much as 40 floppy disks.

Then I'd salivate over screenshots of BeOS. But nothing ever came of BeOS, though I understand some perverse OS masochists created an open source version for some reason.

The younger the cohort, the less interested they are. It's the sex-role dimorphism cycle identified by Strauss and Howe in 1992. The rising generation is actually at the maximum level of sex role differentiation. The Boomers in charge are doing everything they can to suppress it, with the help of their sycophants in those rising generations, but the great mass is uninterested.

I proctored a Calc I exam at a local major university and counted around 25 women among the 500 test-takers. The upper-middle class, nearly all-white, high school where I teach offers several programming classes, and there isn't a girl in any.

Okay, where's dh? I've got a business idea for the two of us.

Two companies. One we'll call code-name Mate-Rix, a dating site that promises attractive young women access to successful men. The second we'll call code-name Attractive Hires, a recruiting site that promises to help tech companies recruit (ahem) "qualified" diversity hires. The two of course share data and place attractive women who can pretend to code but really just want to date entrepreneurs with companies that need to look like they have female staffers but don't want anyone who's going to cause problems.

Blogger Doom October 08, 2015 12:45 AM

Ah, okay, read that way, maybe. Actually I was thinking just the opposite of how you put things. There is actually a problem with diversity in tech. There is too much of it. Cut out the uselessly allowed for the sake of diversity and the problem will be fixed. At this point, required diversity floods the system. It isn't even seen as a problem because it is a bug built into the system. Kill quotas. Encourage the end of quotas for just five years to a decade in order to clean out the swamp, then let markets decide which minorities are worth hiring and keeping.

Yes, there is a problem with diversity. It starts in colleges, where blacks and others are preferred over better qualified. Then on to the hiring practices and retention efforts. If these things had be eliminated, Zero would not be president. He would be serving coffee, something even Biden understood until he got a ticket to ride.

The Gubmint is too broke to pay for all these dopes from the Ghetto, so they are putting feeding the voters on their easy to fool plantation onto the corporate ledgers. However a funny thing happened on the way to serfdom, all those real workers got a good close-up look at the diversity. The numbers of liberal left-wing voters have been in freefall since those welfare queens started showing up at workplaces wearing pajamas and slippers and calling the working class crackers and gooks. Oh well. Its like those vibrant new black authors who keep getting all those awards for their crappy unreadable books. It would be fun if the Evil Legion of Evil held up Apple as an example of what happens when you hire predominately white males. Apple makes a big deal of their diversity but it is mainly at their retail stores. Their management, coders and designers are overwhelmingly white males. Now that Tim Cook has played the gay card they have some protection from this, still it would be fun to see how much heat the company could take before they buckle.

I was tempted to post that for the Carson Kissers but do you really think they would lie about the number of Malpractice cases he had? Perhaps they where too afraid of being called racist to say there was an incorrect post op count, which would be solved with an x-ray. Incorrect post op counts happen around 2-3 times a year in a hospital, but they get dealt with.

I have seen both sides of the malpractice debate. I have seen malpractice, with no shortage of vibrant die verse city, I have seen malpractice covered up, and I have seen Drs sued for malpractice when they had done everything by the book but believed a radiologist when he "misread" studies. The latter gave patients treatment based on radiologist's mistakes.

There is actually a problem with diversity in tech. There is too much of it.

At some point you might think it wouldn't be so bad if they just paid people that didn't have to show up, then you wouldn't have to waste energy entertaining some of their ideas. You can give them desk jobs that don't involve anything that kills people, but they still will want to chat away at meetings.
