This is my shocked face

ESPN finally gets around to shutting down Grantland:
Effective immediately we are suspending the publication of Grantland.  After careful consideration, we have decided to direct our time and energy going forward to projects that we believe will have a broader and more significant impact across our enterprise.

Grantland distinguished itself with quality writing, smart ideas, original thinking and fun.  We are grateful to those who made it so.  Bill Simmons was passionately committed to the site and proved to be an outstanding editor with a real eye for talent.  Thanks to all the other writers, editors and staff who worked very hard to create content with an identifiable sensibility and consistent intelligence and quality. We also extend our thanks to Chris Connelly who stepped in to help us maintain the site these past five months as he returns to his prior role.
There was no way the site was ever going to make money. It made sense as a means of keeping Bill Simmons happy, but there was no reason to continue it once they fired him.

I liked the idea, but it was too full of SJWs pushing the usual nonsense to bother sifting through it for the interesting articles. I quit reading it regularly long before the Sports Guy was ejected.

RIP Grantland

Blogger Kallmunz October 31, 2015 12:20 PM

A man was walking home alone late one foggy night, when behind him he hears:
BUMP...
BUMP...
BUMP...
Walking faster, he looks back and through the fog he makes out the image of an upright casket banging its way down the middle of the street toward him.
BUMP...
BUMP...
BUMP...
Terrified, the man begins to run toward his home, the casket bouncing quickly behind him
FASTER...
FASTER...
BUMP...
BUMP...
BUMP..
He runs up to his door, fumbles with his keys, opens the door, rushes in, slams and locks the door behind him.
However, the casket crashes through his door, with the lid of the casket clapping
clappity-BUMP...
clappity-BUMP...
clappity-BUMP...
on his heels, the terrified man runs.
Rushing upstairs to the bathroom, the man locks himself in. His heart is pounding; his head is reeling; his breath is coming in sobbing gasps.
With a loud CRASH the casket breaks down the door.
Bumping and clapping toward him.
The man screams and reaches for something, anything, but all he can find is a bottle of Vicks formula 44 cough syrup!
Desperate, he throws the cough syrup at the casket...and,
.

The coffin stops!!!!

Grantland had pretty good pro and college football writers, especially Chris B Brown aka smartfootball.

ESPN isn't in great financial shape, and there's not much to give them hope things will improve. Cable is dying and they're just another crappy website on the web. But I guess Steffie Badnews did just get an award from some New York Ladies club for a story on Tommy John surgery.

@7 Josh:
They would have been fine if they hadn't gone absolutely insane bidding on rights fees.
While they did indeed overpay for programming, they are also being squeezed by (cable) 'cord cutting' as well as it's SJWs.
With Simmons trying to bring other Grantland staff over to his unnamed HBO venture and small revenue (advertising is not the cornucopia of money it's made out to be) and plus low traffic, ESPN pulled the plug.
Now that they are staring another billion in rights fees in the face, plus the issues with the big fantasy football outfits don't be surprised that there'll be more cost chopping - including in programming as existing contracts expire.

The cord cutting only impacts them because of how much they have spent on rights fees.

OpenID Jack Amok October 31, 2015 2:43 PM

The cord cutting only impacts them because of how much they have spent on rights fees.

Well, sure, but the big reason they paid so much for rights was they thought live sports was the only thing that would stop cord cutting. And to a certain extent, they were right, just not right enough to be profitable.

ESPN doesn't have any real strengths other than Cable, so they gambled on keeping it viable, but it looks like they're going to lose that gamble.

Yeah, we cut the cord a couple years ago. If I need to catch something live that's only ESPN, I enjoy a cold one at a local pub. Free TV has a decent amount of live programming.

ESPN and NBC have been pushing futball and rugby lately because it's its almost exclusively white. I wonder if the SJW is cover for programming that targets rich whites.

@20 Josh:
The cord cutting only impacts them because of how much they have spent on rights fees.
And ESPN is a huge part of the cord cutting, it's the single most expensive (non-HBO) channel. The only reason it hasn't been pushed to 'premium' ranks is because Disney has been able to strong-arm cable/satellite companies.
As in ''You want the ABC local? You gotta take the ESPNs, Disney Channel, ect regardless whether or not your subscribers even want ESPN''
More than a few don't want it because they're not interested in sports.
With the rise of streaming AND rising cable bills more and more people are saying 'to hell with it'.

I thought that whole piece was pretty good.

Baseball's unwritten rules are stupid.

Blogger YIH October 31, 2015 4:23 PM

BTW, the reason Disney is strong-arming cable companies is in the big league contracts there is a proviso that ESPN guarantees 90% (with the NBA contract 80%) 'penetration'.
Obviously that also matters to the advertisers, areas without 'market penetration' is what forced the merger of UPN with WB to become CW.
It's why despite speculation I doubt the Super Bowl will go PPV any time soon - not that many would pay $50-100 just to watch the Super Bowl. Advertising is paying the way for that event. I know, the World Cup's bigger, but it's many more games (in a sport that isn't advertiser-friendly) and not that important in the US.
That said, I have ESPN and don't watch it (nor much TV period). Much of ESPN's programming is junk sports such as fitness, fishing, and more SportCenters than anyone can possibly stomach.
"What is everyone's favorite sport website?"
Believe it or not, Business Insider, while it's general news coverage leaves something to be desired (such as research and proofreading) it's sports coverage is pretty good - and because it can't devote the whole site to sports, it tends to focus on sports without needing to fill space with SJW BS.
I also love it's practice of distilling key plays to animated .gifs

Simmons was so much better back before Boston was winning anything. That said, Simmons bit off more than he could chew trying to balance writing, managing the site and TV. If he can get a decent platform again, cut the amount of writers in half and do more writing himself, another Grantland could work. But I fear Simmons is addicted to doing TV, which isn't his strong suit.

Competition is supposed to help consumers. However, it doesn't seem to work in the case of sports broadcasting. When networks like ESPN and FOX Sports try and outbid each other for TV rights, it just increases their costs which are inevitably passed on to consumers. The only real beneficiaries of this so-called "competition" are the leagues like the NFL.

Blogger Desiderius November 01, 2015 11:50 AM

Josh,

"87% of PGA fans are white

27% of PGA fans have incomes above $100k

(a) fair enough. I was talking about SWPLs/Ivy League types, so you're talking about another (relatively) rich group of whites, with some overlap (after all, it is college football, and SWPLs love everything to do with college, but for a lot of them it's still insufficiently cosmopolitan). Golf is almost exclusively white, so also fits my original point. NBC runs golf opposite college football, when it isn't running other white sports like Premier League or X-Games stuff.

(b) Percentage of viewers who are white is irrelevant, as most non-whites don't spend enough money on sports (or the products advertised by sports) to matter. The relevant stat is share among whites and overall number of eyeballs.

OpenID Jack Amok November 01, 2015 12:18 PM

You're looking for competition from the wrong end. It's not Fox and CBS and ESPN that are in competition. It's the NFL and other pro sports, and the NFL is crushing the competition. So the networks bid against each other for a scarce resource. A resource they desperately need BTW because they're no good at producing original content so they need to repackage what the NFL produces.

Anonymous Geoff November 01, 2015 2:20 PM

Jack, true the NFL, NBA and MLB etc., compete (at least when their seasons overlap). But I don't think that negates my point about the unproductive competition amongst the networks.

Also agree that the pro leagues are the true content providers. If I were in the sports business, I would definitely want to be on the content side rather than the network side.
