Volume X

Jerry Pournelle is pleased with the progress of the revived THERE WILL BE WAR:
There Will Be War Volume 10 is filling faster than expected. There are still a few fiction slots open, and we are looking for serious previously published non-fiction on future war; previous publication in a military journal preferred but not a requirement. Can be any length but under 5,000 words preferred. Payment on acceptance of a flat $200 advance against pro rata share of 25% of cover price royalties.

We purchase non-exclusive anthology rights only; original works not excluded but no extra payment for first serial rights. Like the previous works in the There Will Be War series, this is a reprint anthology.  The introductions to the works will be original.  Previous volumes have sold well. Email submission@therewillbewar.net to submit. Volume will probably be published (eBook) in December; hardbound volume next year.
A few things: PLEASE STOP SUBMITTING straight SF, urban fantasy, SF romance, and anything that is not clearly MILITARY SCIENCE FICTION. A submission will be rejected out of hand as soon as it becomes apparent that it is not mil-SF. We've received a startling number of submissions that are not even remotely relevant to one of the most famous anthology series in science fiction.

Note that this is an elite collection and many of the contributors names are very recognizable. Based on the scores of submissions I have personally reviewed, if you are not a significantly experienced SF writer, your piece is unlikely to be of a sufficient quality to be accepted. If you're looking to break in for the first time, this is probably not the place, particularly if you have no military experience.

We are now looking more for non-fiction than fiction. But we are not looking for opinion pieces from people without significant military or strategic experience.

Since my story was firmly rejected I’m posting this here to show just how unfair Vox is being with his requirements. He just can’t handle a strong female character.

SPELLBOUND IN SPACE

She’s a princess of a great interstellar house ruled by an iron-fisted patriarch, and he’s a galactic pirate king who is bored with the tarts who fawn over him. When her overbearing father sends her on another religious pilgrimage to worship the gods she’s never seen her ship crashes on the Pirate King’s secret asteroid base. She’s suddenly caught up in a whirlwind of interstellar war, espionage, duty, and finds herself falling for the one man her dad would never approve of…

Amen. The military is not Starfleet. Calling your officer a dick to his face and then have him slap you for it, are career enders for the both of you. It really doesn't work that way.

Just FYI.

Blogger Michael Maier October 12, 2015 11:54 AM

Just curious, Vox. Have any of these 'unsuited" pieces been submitted by Ilk?

Blogger Dave October 12, 2015 12:18 PM

You've already got my money. The cover will be over the top yes.

Jartstar and Cataline you might want to combine efforts for the volume of There Will Be Angst

Blogger Cataline Sergius October 12, 2015 12:28 PM

@5 Dave

I've been reading slush for this. That was from an actual submission.

On the other hand, some of them haven't been bad at all. Just not good enough.

Those are the ones you bite your lip over, before giving them the big thumbs down. It's a bitch a of decision to make but There Will Be War is the gold standard of military science fiction. So it's all about standards.

You make your decisions accordingly.

I wouldn't say even if I had been keeping track. Which I'm not.

Blogger David-2 October 12, 2015 12:34 PM

@5 I'm glad you clarified that. I thought you meant there was a clip on YouTube from a Star Trek spinoff with that startling scene ...

That's too much; somebody didn't grok the target audience.

PLEASE STOP SUBMITTING straight SF, urban fantasy, SF romance, and anything that is not clearly MILITARY SCIENCE FICTION.

There goes my story TAKEN BY THE SPACE MARINES: A BBW PARANORMAL SHAPESHIFTER ROMANCE

Tempest is a plus-sized warrior princess serving in Rasczak's Rough-Tough Creampuffs, the elite Sensitivity Training platoon of the Terran Gynarchy's Semi-Mobile Infantry.

But when she is seconded to the Space Marines, she finds that, sometimes, the sensitivity trainer... can become the sensitivity trainee!

Sean Jalzi is a hunky 6ft 2" badass Space Marine who can almost lift as much as a teenage girl. His chiselled moobs and masterful grovelling make Tempest's space-knickers dewy. And not just with the sweat run-off from her bodacious butt!

Zagfor Poison-Mandible is a 9ft 8" Klendathu warlord with exotic glistening chitin and a sexy come-to-bed eye cluster. He promises to take Tempest away, feed her with royal jelly, and make her his queen.

But in the midst of an interstellar war between Klendathu and Womanity, Tempest is torn between two lovers and much choose which suitor gets to enter her personal black hole.

PRAISE FOR TAKEN BY THE SPACE MARINES:

"As good as anything I've ever farted into print" - N.K. Jemisin, authoress.

"I laughed, I cried, I ate an ice cream van" - Seanan McGuire, food critic.

"2/10 - needs more kiddies" - Philip Sandifer, stranger danger.

"This is absolute [...] quality. What the [...] were they thinking [...] publishing utter [...] like this. Science fiction, my [...] This is a [...] pile of [...] a story. I'm going to have the author [...] and then put on display." - Vox Day, Supreme Dark Lord

Oh well, I guess that eliminates my war stories from the later 60's with the Marines in country. Though, some of them are pretty good, even funny at times. Interesting to experience first hand, not so much to read about, I fear.

Blogger S1AL October 12, 2015 1:25 PM

I just want it noted that I think you captured VD's demeanor rather nicely. But you forgot the hurling of the silver-plated skull goblet.

Blogger Titus Quinctius Cincinnatus October 12, 2015 1:34 PM

From my submission:

"Commander Clark the Marine took his machine gun made of lasers and shot it at the aliens, who shot back with big mass driver cannons. Because Cmd. Clarke the Space Marine had a personal force shield, the mass drives bounced off like a spitball of a personal force shield. Cmd. Clark was really really good at strategy and tactics and logistics and other military stuff like that, and was able to pull a fast one on the aliens and blow up their mass driver cannon and save the princess. Unfortunately, she was in another castle and was not the princess he was looking for."

I can't believe this was rejected.

Blogger Josh October 12, 2015 1:38 PM

Going by twitter, the title will be "There will be butt plugs"

@11,

I can't wait for the part where thousands of Zagfor's larvae eat their way out of Tempest's body. He chose her because she was large and rich in vital nutrients...

Blogger maniacprovost October 12, 2015 3:19 PM

Maybe the SJWs are trolling you with their back catalogue.

I have a couple of space navy stories but I wouldn't submit them to TWBW. Maybe Riding the Red Horse. What about "Reprint Anthology" is hard to grasp? There are plenty of sci fi markets no one reads to submit crap to.

Paranormal Private Eye: Heavier Than Fiction

The despondent writer slouched over his mom's old Toshiba, trying to try to think of a plot twist, but ruminating instead over the girl who'd briefly lived next door to his friend Pete six years before. Though they'd never spoken, he'd felt a connection. Suddenly, the lights went out. Had his mom forgotten to pay the electric bill? Bill Wandwiper never knew, as he felt a cold blade plunge into his back....

Chapter 1

Arielle Ponywether got the call at half past four. She was wrapping up a long day of throwing darts at her ex-partner's picture, there on the wall of the Big Beautiful Detective Agency...

but if you offer him a blowjob after he slaps you, that's totes okay.

foreplay, dontchaknow.

5ft 2".

you break verisimilitude like that and it just completely throws me out of the story.

"Amen. The military is not Starfleet. Calling your officer a dick to his face and then have him slap you for it, are career enders for the both of you. It really doesn't work that way."

Had an officer on a boomer hold an enlisted man to a bulkhead by his neck- with his feet not touching the deck. Witnessed by many. No one ever became privy as to what started their conversation, no voices were ever raised, but nothing ever happened to either one of them. But, I will state that sometimes it does happen that way. Not often, but sometimes.

"Calling your officer a dick to his face and then have him slap you for it"
Was not so unusual in different times and places. The latter much more common than the former (standard in the Japanese military till 1945 just as an example), but troops berating their officers certainly happened. The modern US military is not necessarily the template of all militaries that have been and could be.

Blogger buwaya October 12, 2015 5:49 PM

Vox, where does Castalia stand on general slush pile submissions - say novels for publication in general, not just pieces for TWBW ? Is Castalia getting huge piles of unsolicited manuscripts ?

Blogger Cataline Sergius October 12, 2015 6:38 PM

@27 Harold

Not the way it happened in this story.

This was not a go to the tree line to "talk things out," kind of thing. I've had those discussions myself. Did me good, I was being a young shit.

This was a, my military background comes entirely from movies and TV, wasn't Battlestar cool? kind of thing.

Blogger Hammerli280 October 12, 2015 7:08 PM

Vox, if you're still looking for non-fiction, I've a piece that might be of interest. It got published a while back in Joint Force Quarterly, but overedited for my tastes. I'll e-mail you Tuesday.

I wouldn't say "huge", but certainly more than we can reasonably keep up with. And frankly, new stuff from Lind, Wright, and Van Creveld will always be the priority.

Which is another way of saying that there's quite a market left for would-be indie publishers to tap into.

But be aware that the actual work is nowhere near as easy as even an informed outsider might think. Ebooks and Print On Demand publishing have reduced the difficulty and capital investment significantly, but you still need a lot of intelligent human attention just to produce adequate epubs.

Vox, I'm one of those noobs looking to break in for the first time. Is the fact I haven't received a summary rejection yet a good sign or is it more a matter of the pile being too deep to get around to us all yet?

@27 "Had an officer on a boomer hold an enlisted man to a bulkhead by his neck"

I served on a Trident, and it seems like such an entirely different culture. Sometimes I wonder if I could ever right convincing military just because it's so completely at odds to everything else I've ever read.

@42,

AFAIK, CH is working with Pournelle on reprinting the entire series Vol 1-9, with the first 4 done. Volume 10 is special because it will be new.

5-10 in Kindle? With (hope, hope, hope) NEW material? Oh yessss...
