Why show when there is nothing to gain?

Mike Cernovich explains why Trump has picked a showdown with Fox over the debate:
Donald Trump isn’t going to show up to the GOP debate, and the same idiots who never saw his rise are losing their minds. As one of only two people who saw Trump’s rise and predicted it, let me explain what Trump is doing.

Would you give your business competitors millions of potential customers?

Before Donald Trump ran for office, the Republican debates were snooze fests. A few people who were bored watched them.

Because of Donald Trump the GOP debates have drawn huge crowds. The latest debate had 13.5 million viewers, a record number.

Those millions of people watch the debate for one reason – Trump.

No one cares about crusty Cruz, sweaty Rubio, or sleepy-eye Jeb Bush.

When Trump shows up, his competitors have a chance to impression millions of people who otherwise wouldn’t care about them.

Trump has built up the personal brands of parasites and losers. He’s given them enough corporate welfare.

Trump did the last debates to prove a point – that he can win them.
Trump has proven his point. He won every debate.

He has nothing to gain by giving ratings to dishonest FoxNews and to share his millions of fans with the other candidates.
I could care less about the debates. But at this point, I sincerely hope Mike is right, that Trump doesn't show up, and the ratings tank. I have to admit, it would not have occurred to me to find an excuse to blow it off and thereby take the wind out of everyone else's sails so effortlessly.

As Scott Adams points out, once more, all they're talking about is Trump. Once more, the only candidate's actions that matter are Trump's.

I don't know about America, but Trump has already made politics great again.

God, this crap has been atrocious since after Reagan's first term, but only know that its stale crust has finally been cracked can I see it clearly.

He isn't showing up, and if he does, that will be his first misstep. The reason he conceded to CNN is not the same reason he would concede to Fox.

I wouldn't say he won every - or any - debates, but he certainly didn't embarrass himself. Given how many people desperately wanted him to be a bozo, that was a clear victory even if the others did better.

So yeah, I can really see why the ball is in Trump's corner now. FOX is going to lose boatloads of money if they don't give him what he wants.

Of course Trumps going to show up, the reason he's shown up to past debates is t to prove he can win, it's to satisfy his narcissistic desire to be in the spotlight. All he's doing is stirring drama to build hype for a "showdown". It's marketing theatrics.

Blogger tweell January 27, 2016 4:02 PM

It's eye-opening watching a Xanatos gambit play out in real life politics. Are you one of Trump's advisors, Vox?

Blogger dc.sunsets January 27, 2016 4:06 PM

Trump is channeling the Right.

The Republicans were NEVER on the Right. They were Left-light, AKA conservatives.

Long ago the country was at about 2, the Left fringe at 4, then the Left fringe moved to 5...and the conservatives moved to 3. The Left moved to 7, the conservatives moved to 4.5 or so. More recently the Left moved to 451, and the conservatives moved to 449 (but heck, they're conservative!)

Trump is the consummate salesman. He sensed a vast, untapped market (for Right) and his entrepreneurial genius dictates his capture of it.

The USA has not had a political Right since probably Hamilton. Even Reagan was still only Left-light, albeit with lots of friends at Lockheed, Martin-Marietta, Raytheon, UTC, etc. More guns, more butter, or more butter and more guns, that has been the USA's political system for 200 years.

The cupboard is finally bare, Cthulhu (who only turns to the left) has turned so far to the left that utter INSANITY is now public policy.

The USA has been turned into the ground like a corkscrew (left thread) and it's down to two ways out: try for China or turn to the right!

You still don't grok it. Trump can literally do whatever he wants and America will vote for him. Show up? Not show up? Doesn't matter.

Practically he can do whatever he wants - he has a large lead and a lot of favor.

Literally though, there's still ways he can mess up and lose this, and that involves signalling he's a weakling and capitulating to people/groups that don't need to be capitulated to, and that includes Fox. It's very improbable, but possible.

Blogger Bluntobj Winz January 27, 2016 4:19 PM

Muslim activist Nabela Noor was chosen by Fox News to participate in Thursday’s GOP debate. Noor has publicly condemned Donald Trump and likened him to Adolph Hitler. Previous reports also indicate she condemns the United States as a racist nation that suffers Islamophobia which is largely responsible for inciting terror attacks against it. Fox News has yet to explain why it would allow such a person to participate in a nationally-televised GOP debate despite requests to do just that."

@13 That probably would have been/will be a self-inflicted kill shot to Fox News than anything that would have harmed Trump. Fox isn't MSNBC. A morbidly obese, physically grotesque Muslim frothing at the mouth and expressing fringe left views will only sicken the public and create more support for Trump. And conservatives who watch Fox, while they may have tolerated cucks, will not continue to watch if Fox goes openly left wing. Fox will either need to get with the times and shift right or lose share to CNN and others.

Limbaugh is spot on here.

http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2016/01/27/trump_refuses_to_play_by_the_rules

Now, it's very simple, if you read The Art of the Deal or if you know Donald Trump at all, it's very simple: He had an unpleasant experience in the first debate, and in his mind, the question that he was asked was rigged. Don't forget, before that first debate, remember all of the news stories that were floating around saying that that debate, somebody at Fox had been given orders by the Republican establishment to take Trump out. Remember that? There were any number of so-called sources for this. Some said it was the donors demanding it. Some said that it was Fox News executives demanding it. Some said it was the RNC demanding it.

Well, Trump's not immune. He hears it. And even if he hadn't heard it he would have to know that they want to take him out; he's outside the game; he's breaking all the rules. He's exposing so much as fraud that has gone on inside the American political process for so long they can't allow somebody like this to win and succeed. It's quite natural they would want to take him out as well. It's Bengals-Steelers time here, folks. It's quite natural they'd want to take him out. Well, he heard it.

Here comes Megyn Kelly's first question. He didn't hear anybody else get a question like that. He never sees Hillary Clinton get a question like that. He never hears Bill Clinton or another Democrat get a question like that. So he answers it and says screw this. I'm not putting myself in that position again. Why should I? I don't have to.

But the rules of the game say when there's a debate, you show up. Screw the rules, he's saying. Why should I willingly give them another shot at me in a circumstance they control, why should I do it? What's the sense in it for me? I'm leading; I'm running the pack here; why in the world should I put myself in that circumstance? I've already seen what's gonna happen.

I don't think it's any more complicated than that. I mean, there could be some personal things going on here that I don't know about. But just from the standpoint of knowing Trump, reading his book, and seeing how he operates elsewhere, in his mind, screw the rules, screw what's expected, screw "This is just the way you do it." I'm not gonna put myself in a position go where I'm gonna be treated unfairly. I don't have to. I'm Donald Trump. Anybody can do this. Ted Cruz could choose to do it if he wants to. They just don't. Cruz and the rest of the pack are playing the rules of the game. Trump is saying I don't have to do it. I don't want to do it. I don't have any respect for these people. What the hell.

"
As someone who wrote one of the best-selling business books of all time, The Art of the Deal, who has built an incredible company, including some of the most valuable and iconic assets in the world, and as someone who has a personal net worth of many billions of dollars, Mr. Trump knows a bad deal when he sees one. FOX News is making tens of millions of dollars on debates, and setting ratings records (the highest in history), where as in previous years they were low-rated afterthoughts.

Unlike the very stupid, highly incompetent people running our country into the ground, Mr. Trump knows when to walk away. Roger Ailes and FOX News think they can toy with him, but Mr. Trump doesn’t play games. There have already been six debates, and according to all online debate polls including Drudge, Slate, Time Magazine, and many others, Mr. Trump has won all of them, in particular the last one. Whereas he has always been a job creator and not a debater, he nevertheless truly enjoys the debating process – and it has been very good for him, both in polls and popularity.

He will not be participating in the FOX News debate and will instead host an event in Iowa to raise money for the Veterans and Wounded Warriors, who have been treated so horribly by our all talk, no action politicians. Like running for office as an extremely successful person, this takes guts and it is the kind [of] mentality our country needs in order to Make America Great Again.

@61 Noah B
Immediately afterward, he and Ivanka could shave Megyn Kelly's head.

His poll numbers would go into the 60s

I wonder how #FoxNewsFreshPrince of Saudi is taking the big dodge from Trump? Pity the poor sheep and goats who will be abused because of his failure.

@80: She's just about done that. Clueless move.

They should ask is she is going to give back the $40million she got while secratary from moslem nations that execute gays

Maybe it'll make the GOP primary more clear if I put it in familiar terms.

Cruz and Carson (if he's still in it) are the Sad Puppies slate, Trump is the Rabid Puppy candidate, and everybody else is on Tor's list.

So is it still time to play nice?

@61 LOL!

In the interest of historical perspective, I give you this Trump interview on Moprah's show in 1988:

Hilarious radio from 6am til now and into the late night more coverage for The Donald. Interesting foreboding times.

Anonymous Cadwallander J January 27, 2016 8:53 PM

I began to take the Donald seriously after he took a surprising protectionist stance with respect to free trade in the last debate. Haven't heard a Republican take such a position since Buchanan. Not only was he exactly right about our trade with China, he destroyed the rest of the establishment Repukes on stage with an anti-free trade salvo.

These maneuvers around Fox are just the entertaining icing on top of a policy position cake we on the right have been seeking for years.

@Nate - we get it - you don't believe him, it's a ploy, he's a Yankee, and from the cesspool called New York to boot. Maybe, but for those of us who aren't quite ready for Round 2, he represents a chance to delay the anticipated collapse.

Plus, you were wrong about 2015. Where's my hyperinflation? Got some debts I need to disappear with billion dollar Barry Obama bills.

Anonymous SkepticalCynical January 27, 2016 8:59 PM

I can't claim to be following the presidential race or the R debates in any great detail, but I'd guess this is mostly about battlespace preparation. Someone like Ms. Noor is guaranteed to appear unlikeable and unsympathetic to virtually all of Trump's supporters. Any response he might make to her would increase his popularity.

But it's easily foreseeable that the media will attempt another "kill shot" in the general election debates, and maybe a more effective one. Walking away from a fairly meaningless debate now, especially if he pays no political price for doing so, allows Trump to credibly threaten to walk away from a higher-stakes debate this fall if he doesn't like the playing field.

Hell Yes, Yes and Yes. America First Protectionism and Punish the Globalist Corps.
35% Ford! the Donald says. "They'd call within 48 hrs saying ok we'll build the plants here". Damn right they will. Start making and building things the world wants and needs here again and cut the Corp taxes at home. We'll deal with the Unions when we get there.

Mmm maybe - Interesting

I've said this for a long time - daDebates are a FRAUD, a fr....waste of time!

Anonymous Mr. Rational January 27, 2016 10:17 PM

@88 You didn't look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOKi5YeNtRI did you?  Trump has had a pro-US-worker position for almost 30 years now.

Anonymous paradox January 27, 2016 10:44 PM

@34. Nate

Mike calls everyone a cuck.

If Mike is calling everyone a cuck... eventually he'll get one right... and he's right, Cruz is a cuck. Someone would have to live down by the river, under a rock, not to know it.

Mr Rational says HERE

Thanks for link. I ignore as much news as I possibly can. Need to see more of The Trumpets! actual platform or such. Obviously I become somewhat tangentially aware that someone was spouting the Perot/Buchannan America First - like line. Bring It.
Thanks again for that specific.

@93.

Yay. Cruz is a total cuck. It's embarrassing.

Anonymous Susan January 27, 2016 11:50 PM

A big reason the establishment is in a total defcon level panic is with Trump not at the debate tomorrow, the voters will have the unique opportunity to see the hideous reality of establishment cuckism on full and glorious display on stage.

Without Trump to hide their corruption behind, it will be an epic political trainwreck. I would be very surprised if any of the candidates can even rise to the occasion.

Now, far be it from me to quote Commie political media operative Chris Matthews, but these are very crazy times:

Who’s going to watch a debate between the two Cuban guys?

Very telling in a plethora of ways.

Nabela Noor. She does makeup videos. Welcome to clownworld.

Essentially, Trump tried to get FOX to sign on to his CoC. Trump is making entryism great again. Failing and then doing a victory dance. Hrmmm, let's see...where is this sort of behavior common? Apparently, SJWs and alphas are not mutually exclusive.
