"The Donald Trump of Science Fiction"

Prophetic words from the Puppinette:
Last year, during the lead up to the Hugos, I wrote a post about how this was more important than just a rocketship.... At the time, the idea that Donald Trump would be a serious front-runner for the Republican party was the fodder for jokes. It would never happen. But… if anyone was paying attention to what was happening in SFF, it should have been clear that the Rabid Puppies represented the same xenophobic, white supremacist drive that is giving Trump power.

Let me tell you, I’m terrified of the elections this year.

We’ve been writing dystopian novels as warnings for years. The Hunger Games? Reality Television as politics… not so far fetched right now, is it?

So let me be clear. The fight that is going on in SFF for inclusion is not small. It is not petty. It is a reflection of a much bigger problem, and if we, as a community, don’t start paying attention and trying to change the larger culture then we know how this will end.
Mary Kowall is a low-energy liar and a blatant cheater who bought over 40 Hugo votes last year. But "the Donald Trump of Science Fiction"? Flattering! Great honor!

(I have to admit, I thought her tweet on the subject was exactly eight percent funnier since it was about one "Theordore".)

In any event, she's right to be terrified of the elections. And she should be terrified of rather more than that. Little does she know what is on the horizon. Little does she know what is coming.

Her rather chagrined tweet in response to the reaction to her comparison was even more amusing.
Mary Robinette Kowal @MaryRobinette
I suspected this would be the case.
See, she totally meant to do that. They still don't seem to grasp that anything they say about the Supreme Dark Lord can and will be used against them. And not only by me and the Vile Faceless Minions. Like the Republican establishment, the self-righteous SJWs of what presently passes for science fiction have absolutely no idea how deeply and broadly hated they are.

Look at the novels on the right sidebar of her site. Does that look like science fiction to you? Does it even look like fantasy? No, it's fucking romance and that's exactly how her Pink SF publisher is trying to sell it. To even call it Pink SF is a bit of a stretch.

And like the Republican establishment, the SJWs of Pink SF simply do not understand why so many people are absolutely delighted to be able to support the man those SJWs fear and hate, whether they agree with him on many things or not. I'm now seeing traffic levels the PSF-SJWs used to fantasize and lie about having, and a fair amount of that is directly due to them.

Yes, it is.  It is an invasion of White male geek/nerd culture by alien and hostile forces.  It is, in the left's terms, cultural appropriation and violation of their safe space (yes, I'm being ironic).

White male geeks and nerds don't have any intrinsic objections to non-whites, non-males and non-geeks/nerds playing in their genre.  They think it's great, everyone should be allowed to enjoy it.  But there is no right to inclusion.  In geek/nerd culture, being part of science fiction means having to do it well enough to merit inclusion (like open-source software).

What "inclusion" (of "diverse" characters, especially) usually winds up producing is a mish-mash of unconvincing plot elements which read like someone was going through a checklist.  Generally, it sucks.  It merits being consigned to the heap of stuff nobody will voluntarily read.

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here.

You're right. I don't like your (VD) politics or opinions. But that's irrelevant, because I *despise* the SJWs that have ruined SF.

I admire you and the puppies for standing your ground and giving SJWs the proverbial finger. That's why I'm here. I could not care less for Trump, or conservatives, or Christians, but I do care about SF, and as far I'm concerned the puppies are the *only* people who truly care about SF.

GalaxyQuest the movie suggested the genre to be beyond parody. Why? There's something else going on. A generation co-opting the fantasies of children to sustain their own cognitive dissonance denials of reality. It's maintaining their pretense of inclusion avoids dealing with the barbaric brutal denial of reality. The fantasies are multi layered. Inception type dreams within dreams. Self deception is pride's only vestment.

What people believe matters as of critical importance. To actually care is to hate self deception. No one is comforted seeing an anorexic who thinks themselves satiated. The glass houses of sheltered workshops need someone to run them. So long as there is food on the table, the electric lights go on and the water is running the pretense goes on. The rooms with every arm attached to an opiate infusion is a room of the half living.

In Syria the lights aren't all on, the food isn't on the table, the water isn't running all the time. Culture One does not equal culture Two. It's not all equal.

Blogger Gaiseric February 27, 2016 7:25 AM

She probably didn't merit a pageview from all of this, but did you see that first commentator? Damien Trasler: "My wife told me last night that she had been talking with our daughters about the changing perception of gender roles in the house (since they have been brought up with me at home and my wife having a career) and she pointed out that the kids’ grandparents would have found it somewhat shameful for a man to have the wage earned by his wife. My kids said they felt this was unfair to men, to have the expectation of society weigh upon them.
While I was proud of them for examining the issue from all sides, I was also disappointed. Yes, some men have a tough lot, but the chief inequality is towards women. Until THAT gets fixed, other issues in the gender equality debate have to wait.
In the same way, there are some (very few) valid points made by the various foaming-at-the-mouth Republican candidates, but they are all made while ignoring the much wider and more important issues.

Viewing the American election circus from the outside is a terrifying process. I really, really hope the voting public come out in force with their heads screwed on right."

When you control the media but not the minds, and when you push too far, the push back is horrendous. You know, I was starting to think establishment politics was really just trying to force something. And maybe there was some of that. Honestly, I now think what you are telling this broad is more likely the majority of it. They really did buy their own fiction. Choked it down. Closed their circles to only those who think like them. It's all they know so they thought it was all there is.

I'm not sure all of them are even going to survive. In any of these spheres. And, roughly put, I don't care. It is coming. I think even you will be surprised. Not always on the good side, but so go corrections. The ones who can't or won't change will be crushed. Reality, things like racial difference truths, and social and economic self-reliability, the real value of employees and lack of it for most, are about to hit. You can't vote your way out of it, certainly can't fight. All the safety nets, and corruptions those brokered, are about about to be flushed.

Your only safe space will be the grave. Join the club or be taught the price of guaranteed safety.

Good. You should be. You should always have been. Deciding who directs the power of the most powerful organization in the world should be a terrifying prospect.

If more people felt that way, maybe they would realize that it’s become too powerful and work to scale it back.

Then it wouldn’t matter as much who was elected President.

TAFFETA AND TRUMP
By Mary Robinette Sue

Mary Sue bit her lip and willed herself to glance directly into the eyes of the Don of Science Fiction.

Cruel eyes. Masterful eyes. Eyes as cold and hard as an Alaskan winter.

He gazed down on her with just the faintest curl of amused contempt playing on his lips.

Mary Sue quivered and quickly lowered her head. She could feel her neck and cheeks burning crimson with shame. The silky golden curls of her cascading tresses spilled over her face, but could not hide her from Him.

Him. The Supreme Dark Lord of Evilnescence. The Moriarty of Minnesota. The Vituperative Vile Viscount of Vox Popoli.

Him. Seated high apon his throne of bones, watching her. Waiting.

Her slave chains, delicate yet cunningly wrought by master Elven smiths, jingled plaintively as she trembled like a slender spring flower in a stiff March breeze.

"M-my Lord..." breathed Mary Sue, "W-what will you do to - *with*, I mean with me?"

Jingle, jingle, jingle...

The Dark Lord casually rubbed his rugged, stubbled jaw as if in thought before speaking in a husky masculine growl that made Mary Sue's knees wobble like jelly.

"Do to you? What a very pert question from such a pretty pert girl. Tell me, slave, what should I do to you?"

Mary Sue felt herself melting as if she was a knob of butter tossed into a roasting pan. She tried to speak, but only a tiny moan slipped past her pouting, glistening, painted lips.

The Dark Lord raised a regal eyebrow.

"I see. You want me to... put you through your paces, isn't that so?" he demanded.

Mary Sue nodded, her body tingling with delicious humiliation.

"You want me to... take you in hand, don't you", he continued.

Mary Sue's throat now felt bone dry and she uttered a tiny hoarse squeak of submission.

The Dark Lord laughed at her. A rich, long careless laugh mingled with equal parts amusement and malice.

"Well, well, well Mary Sue. How could I possibly say no? This is, after all, your dream."

Blogger CarpeOro February 27, 2016 9:29 AM

The conflict in a "romance" novel is internal. (Scare quotes are necessary because women don't even understand that real romance is tragic, and use it as a synonym for "pragmatic".) She has to get out of her own way and accept the superior being who wants to entangle his life with hers. So in a way, it's like a Christian metaphor.

I think that Liberals are terrified because they know, even subconsciously, that Obama has shredded the Constitution. They were ok with it, though, because Obama is their guy. But he set up that precedent for the next President - who they don't like - to be similarly cavalier with the Constitution. And they will have noons but themselves to blame.

Heck; romance as a genre isn't necessarily just for women; it's just evolved that way. What Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote could fairly be called masculine romance. The John Wayne movie Hatari! is a man's rom-com.

They aren't feminine. At all. But romance is at the heart of the plot.
