And the Dark Lord laughed

John Scalzi ‏@scalzi Jun 6
There's a certain point where you just let go of Amazon rankings because they have no relation to overall reality.

Never underestimate the Gamma male's ability to maintain his delusion bubble. When Tor Books eventually opts out of his contract - and they absolutely will, for reasons that are not entirely McRapey's fault - his rationalizations should be considerably more epic than his upcoming attempt to rip off Isaac Asimov.

Zero fucks given. Like ice. The man is simply stone-cold.

I'd like to recommend the Dagger and Coin Series by Daniel Abraham. It is a good story arc and explores some of the popular topics covered in this blog like races, hard assets (gold) vs printed money, the role of religion and what happens when a gamma male comes into power and attempts to fulfill his delusions. The women characters and the overall "world" are believable. http://www.amazon.com/Dragons-Path-Dagger-Coin/dp/0316080683?ie=UTF8&keywords=daniel%20abraham&qid=1465324610&ref_=sr_1_3&s=books&sr=1-3

After crossing the Rubicon of true profundity, fart and blowjob jokes take on a meaning that is accessible only to devout, long-serving male feminists and unpublished authors sapping away the free WiFi at Starbucks. While his audience in the near future may consist of only a select few, future generations will hail him as an unrivaled literary savant.

He hasn't written a single book on that contract and in all likelihood he has already peaked as a writer. Good isn't enough to justify his contract, he has to be great for the next decade.

Considering the book you are touting has McRapey's stamp of approval (Everything I look for in a fantasy.) on the cover, does that mean there are a lot of rape scenes? Sadly, it has come to this sort of screening for wheat from the chaff.

That's the beauty of it. The traffic here has so far surpassed Whatever that it's not even worth comparing them anymore. He bragged for months about his traffic spiking to 100,000 pageviews for a day with that "Easiest Setting" post in 2010.

Almost certain that Scalzi had nothing to do with it. Those decisions are made by the publisher. But Tor wants him to be a Brand, to justify the money Nielsen-Hayden has invested in him, and one of the ways to accomplish that is to make sure that anyone who reads his book recognizes the name.

Crikey. From the way he says how insignificant you are you'd think it was 1000x at least.

The market really is foo bar. There are a small number of authors consuming a huge slice at the top of the market. A single book by King or Ludlum or whomever sells dozens of millions of copies.

Then the vast midlist. If Scalzi wasn't such a freak of nature he'd realize that the midlist should be banding together. Instead he tries to pretend like he's not midlist. He's bestselling, the NYTimes list says so!

The the long-tail of independent publishers and self-publishers who are doing surprisingly well for themselves with far few units solid but higher per-unit revenue.

I can imagine the pressure being made to bear on Scalzi and his editor(s) to get him into the lower stratum of the big leagues. Going from selling 20k-50k books, even 100k books, into the low millions, is such a huge leap.

I really wish I'd not realized it, that's going to make it very hard to take anything he says seriously. I almost LOL'd when I made the connection. They look as though they could be related too.

Reasons I drew that conclusion:
- humble-bragged about being whipped and her making all decisions
- made comments about hiring someone to off his wife's ex
- keeps bringing up legal decisions saying "Not to bring politics into it, but..." then blatantly brings up political viewpoints.
- through his babbling, made it 100% obvious in less than 2 hours that he has zero principles and just likes liberal asshat legal decisions
- uses tons of liberal decisions in his class notes that are not in the text

At least it's an abbreviated summer session.

@51 - to be fair, though, it is now larger than on the original version. I deliberately made my name small because I thought it was the story that was important, not the author. A personal annoyance of mine is HUGE author names and tiny title font. Let the story stand on its own. Maybe not the best marketing, but Amazon puts it all in the same font when they give search results anyway, so.... I mean, who browses covers in the bricks-and-mortar stores any more?

This annoys me too. Sometimes I'll see a book where at least half the cover is the author's name and the title is basically non-existent. And the cover art being almost worthless at that point too.

I get that a lot of times it's probably the author's name that sells a book and not necessarily the book itself, but still.
