A terrible candidate

Even the mainstream media is beginning to admit that Hillary Clinton is an almost exceptionally horrible candidate:
With a toxic cloud hanging over Clinton’s makeshift campaign office at the Radisson hotel in Manchester, Clinton’s chief speechwriter, Dan Schwerin, and her top policy adviser, Jake Sullivan, decamped for Sullivan’s mother-in-law’s house in the Seacoast town of New Castle to rethink the entire campaign's approach.

There, huddled together in the February snow, they scrapped her spaghetti-on-the-wall policy approach and came up with a sturdy slogan that aimed to capture the historic nature of her candidacy while making a pitch to African-American and Hispanic voters: “Breaking Down Barriers.”

There was just one problem: Their candidate hated it.

“This is useless,” a frustrated Clinton vented when Schwerin and Sullivan — two of her longest-serving aides — presented the new plan to her that glum Tuesday morning of Feb. 9 in her Manchester hotel suite.

The feeling was mutual. Her staff admired her attention to detail, but knew she was often her own worst enemy. Clinton is known for taking a draft of a speech and changing it some indelible way to make it more literal and less readable. (The joke at her Brooklyn campaign headquarters is that she would take the public safety slogan “If You See Something, Say Something,” and, in her literal-minded way, change it to say, “If You See Something, Alert the Proper Authorities.”)

The entire episode illustrated Clinton’s paradox: On the one hand, she’s a deeply involved candidate who trusts her own instincts. But on the other, she still struggles, after all these years, when it comes to messaging — and remains almost hostile to the idea of a narrative that Barack Obama, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and even Donald Trump seem to craft so naturally.
Her best campaign strategy is to go into hiding until November and hope that the Democratic demographics do the job for her. It's not a good sign when even your campaign staff are joking about how clueless and inept you are.
Interviews with more than half a dozen Clinton allies inside and outside her campaign reveal a candidate who remains deeply insecure when trying to commit to a message about her campaign, and reluctant to indulge in the rhetorical flourishes that make for the rousing poetry of campaigns.
Of course she's deeply insecure. She's never achieved one single damn thing on her own. She couldn't even manage to keep her husband faithful.

I know someone who has a "3.141596523 degrees of Kevin Bacon" connection to someone who worked with the Clintons.

Apparently, one-on-one, with no other people around, Hillary Clinton is actually a fairly affable individual, and quite reasonable in handling disagreement--she can even change her mind if a good rational argument gets presented.

If there's anyone else in the room, though--even if they're just a bystander, not at all engaged in the interaction--it usually goes downhill at Ludicrous Speed, complete with going to plaid.

Wonder what would drive that.

Of course she's deeply insecure. She's never achieved one single damn thing on her own.

Sure, that’s why she micromanages everything around her, because she can’t actually do anything real, so she focuses obsessively on the small stuff, the petty stuff. This is not at all unusual in women “managers”, either.

One nice thing about the campaign, all the retrospectives of Hillary Rodan Clinton’s career. Things nobody under 30 knows about, things people over 30 have forgotten. A common bond in many of them is her sheer incompetence.

Look back at her scandals, all the way to Arkansas, and the vast majority have to do with someone giving her something for nothing. Cattle futures? Rose Law firm billing? Mucking around with health care in the 90’s? Raw FBI files? Her own private Idaho email server with zero security?

Someone’s always been around to mop up the mess that Her Nibs creates, and hand her a cookie in the process. Something for nothing, because I Am Woman.

Hillary Rodan Clinton is a total 1970’s Affirmative Action Figure, complete with ugly pantsuit and empty briefcase.

It's certainly telling that the slogan she chose to go with ("I'm with her") is all about her. "Breaking Down Barriers” at least can be seen as more inclusive and aspirational.

Vox, what's your rhetorical take on the hated slogan? Was her instinct right? Or is her rhetorical gut as lame as it sounds in this case?

I should've read the article further. I bet she LOVED "I'm with her." It just stroked the ego so well. But embracing it as her actual slogan, as centralizers are wont to do, seems a bad move to me. It will grate on everyone who is not a rabid supporter.

Blogger Doom July 16, 2016 3:21 PM

I don't know about that final judgment. No one can keep someone else faithful. That isn't her problem in that anyway, as I understand things. Her problem is that she didn't care if he was faithful, merely wanting him to keep things under wraps. Her marriage was a joke, start to stop. Her complicit nature was not because she was a dutiful wife, most likely because she is a lesbian with her own affairs to attend. Judge? The sin not the sinner unless there is no difference.

Beside being crooked, I wish more people would see her as the bull dike she is. Definitely not a lipstick lesbian, bleh. It would change her numbers even more than they are now. Anyone who has been around one knows they aren't to be given even an ounce of power... or what passes for power. I doubt if even Trump will call her out on that. I wonder if other groups might initiate such innuendo? It's not difficult to see.

Anonymous Sharrukin July 16, 2016 3:21 PM

“Breaking Down Barriers.”

This isn't all that great of a slogan either.

Clinton's problem is that too many have lost faith in government and her primary pitch is government mandates of one form or another.

Blogger Murray July 16, 2016 3:23 PM

...it falls on Schwerin, Sullivan and their speechwriting team, whose daily assignment is to craft speeches for a reluctant candidate who would feel more comfortable giving a policy seminar.

Spare me. Has Hillary Clinton ever in her life said anything that betrays the presence of a single original thought? All this talk from her aides about her formidable policy wonkery is just cover for the fact that they're saddled with a dud candidate whose only driving motivation is power.

She's trying hard to run her Prez campaign(s) much the same way she did her NY Senate one; ''Listening tours'' of vetted and pre-selected audiences and friendly media.
If it fails... See for yourself, she falls flat on her face. Running for office for real (instead of that canned Senate campaign) she'll have a hard time trying to 'lawyer' her way out of sticky situations.
Nor, as noted, does she understand the Keep It Simple Stupid principle:

Those are all rather complex, not things that can be easily distilled down like ''build the wall''.
It's going to be interesting how she fares in a head-to-head debate with Trump. It's probably going to hurt her (despite the media being 'in her corner') because she'll over-prepare and can't ''think on her feet'', something Trump does well.

Her little "trip" is why I think there's a decent chance of her having a real health event from the stress of a failed campaign and legal issues. Doctors were commenting on what her special glasses meant healthwise when she gave her "what difference does it make" speech and it was likely not just a concussion. Expect her health records to a campaign issue. She has a history of not handling stress well at all and blaming everyone else. With any luck when she pops a gasket it'll be in the first (and only) debate.

Make plenty of popcorn and enjoy watching the downfall one of the most evil psychopaths to ever gain power in the US.

Anonymous Susan July 16, 2016 4:26 PM

Their sham of a legal "marriage" has nothing to do with faithfulness in the marital sense. It simply gives her lesbianism a beard. It gives him the freedom to be the ultimate dawg without worrying about dealing with any expectations of a long term relationship that his mistresses might have.

The only faithfulness that those two have is mutual protection against incrimination if their scams and polite arm twisting for personal gain ever gets exposed.

There never was an expectation of marital faithfulness for either of them. Simply a legal agreement using marriage as a shield to hide behind. Neither of them would survive on their own, I am convinced of that.

As to their piglet, if one looks at a side by side comparison between Chelsea's photo and Web Hubbell's, anyone with two eyes can see who the father is.

"It's going to be interesting how she fares in a head-to-head debate with Trump."

I can't wait to see this. The interesting thing to me, although it may not be astute w/r/t how actual national politics plays out, is that Trump has actually DONE things in the world; there are giant buildings with his name on them, all that Hitlery has is the smoking ruins of Libya and Ghadaffi's raped corpse. I just want to see him tell her, "I've actually built giant extravagant expensive things, which is pretty hard to do, and then I put my name on them -- what have you actually done?" Of course it's Ozymandias territory in the long term, but in the short term, really... what has Hitlery done, aside from making a botch of things?

Personally I think Hitlery and the DNC are so thoroughly electorally corrupt that Trump doesn't stand a chance of winning, even if he gets 295% voter approval; there will be riots and voter intimidation at the polling stations like you've never seen, and there are always bags and bags of fake Dem postal voters waiting in the back room, and shredders for the pro-Trump votes. Especially this time around, when so many people have been psychologically programmed to believe it is their moral duty to oppose evil racist nasty Trump, who is HITLER!!11! and it is morally righteous to de-platform HITLER!!1! and so pro-Trump votes can be shredded and flushed down the toilet with good conscience. Because Holocaust.

Not even close. The polls say around 40% of likely voters. In 2012 (per http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/data/turnout.php) less then 55% of people turned out to vote. So around 22%.

@92 Of course there’s no way that can happen, Her Nibs has already had to play third fiddle to Obama, she won’t let that happen again. The question is, how long can she hold up under the strain of a real campaign?

I think that if she can totter through the convention it will be more difficult to pull a Lautenberg and replace her later on. Not impossible of course, but more difficult. I can see a situation where her physical condition gets so bad they have to replace her, maybe with Bernie. Biden can be VP again.

This isn’t like 1944 when the Party hid FDR’s badly deteriorating condition from the public for months during the 3rd campaign, there’s no way Her Nibs health situation can be kept totally under wraps for the entire campaign.

Those 3 sentences are in a crux, what is wrong with Hillary Clinton. She has never, ever done anything of importance. She was given a seat in the Senate...She married her way to the top of the political pyramid, only to show hoe inept she really is by blowing a sure thing nomination in 2008. She was fired from her first job for lying. A personal failing she's never been able to break. One that's come back to haunt her again, and again and again.

On the face of it, she should be so far ahead of Trump that it should be a walking home run, but because of her serial lying, and trenchant for secrecy, she's viewed as being a corrupt and dishonest politician...at this point, I'm not for Trump so much as being willing to crawl across a mile of broken glass to vote against her ass.

It's still early, but I think Trump's only shot at winning is seeing at least 3 or 4 more terrorist attacks in the U.S before the election.

We need to see where the polls are after the Dem and GOP conventions are over for a good two weeks. But at this point, Trump literally has to run the table on battleground states.

He's losing in VA, FL, CO and NC right now...even in the wake of Clinton being embarassed fully by the FBI probe. And this is still the case with the 2 most important 3rd party candidates in the race who appear at this point to be taking votes from Clinton.

The major calculus being made right now is this: Will the significantly lower appeal of Trump be enough to overcome the general low appeal of Clinton?

I think it will. I think Clinton will have far more effective allies that can rally the troops than Trump. Trump doesn't have an Obama or a Sanders or a Warren. Obama appeals to the regular Dems while Sanders and Warren appeal to the left wing of the party.

But, if we get 2 or 3 significant attacks, all bets are off.

HillBill is a typical baby boomer within the boomer phenomena that I refer to, its silly on my part.

Moving forward, Women especially HilBill and Women around her like Warren, Huma, Chel, etc., all just belong at home. Lorta Lynch, the rest of these women belong at home, they unfit for their rank in that they are increasingly seen or unpalatable to Americans, this is not my opinion but what is being observed. Her circle, dems and media is backing away from another round of the Clints because they too are fatigued from the last 25 years of the Clints, Bushes and drama, the drama isn't getting them ratings. Americans refuse the narrative predictive programming BS in mass media. Again not my opinion, its all objective observation.

I review econ and banking versus politics and either we have Trumpination or Trump Win or we have a women that doesn't want to win based upon her decline energy levels but more importantly we have serious, grave economic problems. Not even Amazon wants to acquire failing Walmart. Few statesiders are able to afford these absurd goods in retail. Most of our money is going to rent, mortgages, food and survival not 'having fun'.

Regarding BLM and Orlando, it appears the left does not care about BLM, gays, etc., it does not fit their narrative but the LGBT abd BLM's don't understand what which they are voting for if they are voting for HillBIll at all. This is not my opinion, its what is being observed nationally and internationally. Other countries have zero interest in or time for the agendas of HillBill but they take notice to Trump and even Putin wants a future. Putin has zero time for the Clintons. Putin is probably watching Turkey while Hillary joked about Turkeys, women make bad jokes about vital issues while the men, patriarchy are interested in reality. Again not my opinion, its all objective observation.

From the latest comments and speeches she gives I doubt she wants to win or wants the job that was rumored to be promised to her. I state this matter as it appears she is sabotaging herself to some degree or so boomer'ed that she think it sounds cool along with 100 million or less supporters that "deal me in" was abnormal. LizWarren isn't going to work out at as VP but dems may have to throw this election out just over Hillary's wildly poor decision making.

I don't think lizWarren can withstand a VP debate with Pence and I doubt HillBIllHuma can even fathom debating Trump at this point. SO I agree with Vox in that she really should just vacay like the current admin family vacays, just golf, line your pantsuits with more money to the Clint Foundiction and cash out.

Overall, I maintain very few, if any, women belong in politics they are just undependable.HillBillBernLizHUma have utterly untenable policies, incompetence with power, pose a international danger, promote war, promote continued job stagnation, screw Gen X, promote more BLM outbursts while HillBill dont care about blacks or gays or anyone but themselves, boomers gotta boom.

Cleveland and Philly are terrible places for conventions. I'm against conventions, they are outdated and a strain on two cities in deep decline, neither can handle the grief that will follow next week. Baltimore just today or 7/16 couldn't behave, if Cleveland's hwys are shut down it will be doom and BLM or whomever will be blamed for pulling major obstruction and posing a public threat to regular everyday people just trying to work in a very difficult nearly awful place to live. Philly is just as horrid to live and drive in as well. The Rustbelt is expansive.

126, 127, its is just suppressed public opinion I've read, I know nothing but who will ever give any information to HillBill when installed into office if she does want to win, lines her pockets with exit cash to flee the coming problems, what country would ever trust the West again? China, Russia, Germany,. etc,. (whom didnt like Angela M's info viewed on insecure servers magically by emailgate) would have every national interest to monitor or hack the henhouse err whitehouse if she wins. She had to have known and did not care about her use of email, servers, foundiction money, who knows. Meanwhile, this not my opinion but what is being observed globally.

I hope I am utterly wrong.

Regarding suppressed, the day of rage events were supposed to be violent but then Nice happened, perhaps the comtroller$ told BLM to save it for the invective convention week or even worse something did happen and it was suppressed. Invective in that the right and left dont want or like Trump making things FUN and happy. I hope Trump dumps the cucks and neocons.

The whitehouse targeted WV over pain meds this week, just months after WV passed a law stating we can open/carry conceal without permit or training for our safety and not one problem has happened since then because this is Appalachian WV. Now its time to strip the final solution to death; "granny here is a pain pill", now the pain meds boomers need are being striped from them at the WV VA and also non VA patients. This is all to promote civil unrest. Taking pain meds from pain patients is unwell, poor policy and regressive.

No other nation in the world pulls these vindictive stunts on the poor and sick yet again this is just boomer opinion that I heard all week long. and its OT so I must head off to work out.

Okay, I noticed that the Hillary campaign hasn't picked up my proposed slogan, and I think I see the problem. For a mass audience, it has to be clean, no vulgarity or anything that hypersensitive grievance mongers could possibly construe as ethnic slurs. I'll try again:

"Hillary, Because It's Easier to Condemn Normality Than to Fix Your Profound Moral Defects"

There! Now that is clean and clear. But wait a second... I can shorten it, and references to the Olympic games are always apropos in the summer before a Presidential election:

"Join the Abnormality Olympics Today! Hillary 2016"

My work here. Is done. [brushes imaginary dust from hands]

How about "what difference does it make?"

That's a good slogan.

Hillary Clinton/Charlie Sheen 2016

It's the closest she'll ever get to "Winning"...:)
