The pretty, monstrous face

It's really rather remarkable how insistent the media is in trying to anoint Milo the face, the spokesman, and the apostle of the Alt-Right.
Members of the alt-right, unlike their old, frustrated European counterparts, are less focused on policy than on performance. Their MO usually involves pissing people off with hypermasculine taunts. They call establishment and even Tea Party Republicans “cuckservatives”—because they are cuckolded by the Left. They do most of their acting out online, often by organizing on 4chan or Reddit and then trolling targets on Twitter. The alt-right is a new enough phenomenon that in August, Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan—running against an alt-right candidate in a primary—mistakenly called it “alt-conservatism” on a radio show. “It’s a nasty, virulent strain of something,” he said. “I don’t even know what it is, other than that it isn’t us. It isn’t what we believe in.”

As Donald J. Trump has become the candidate of the alt-right, Breitbart News has become the movement’s voice. The two merged semiofficially in August, when Breitbart’s chief executive officer, Steve Bannon, quit his job to run Trump’s campaign. And Yiannopoulos, whose byline on the site is simply “Milo,” is Breitbart’s most radioactive star.

“Milo is the person who propelled the alt-right movement into the mainstream,” says Heidi Beirich, who directs the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups and describes the term “alt-right” as “a conscious rebranding by white nationalists that doesn’t automatically repel the mainstream.” Beirich says she’s not even sure if Yiannopoulos believes in the alt-right’s tenets or just found a juvenile way to mix internet culture and extreme ideology to get attention.
Especially because he KEEPS TELLING THEM he is not.
Despite being the alt-right’s mouthpiece, Yiannopoulos won’t say for certain if he’s one of them.... He turns to Allum Bokhari, a 25-year-old half-Pakistani Oxford graduate, who used to work for a Liberal Democratic member of Parliament and now writes for Yiannopoulos at Breitbart, and asks, “Am I a member of the alt-right?”

“No,” says Bokhari, who wears a white dress shirt, gray blazer, and gray trousers to work at a desk next to a garment rack in Yiannopoulos’s living room. “Because they wouldn’t have you. You like Israel a lot more. Some on the alt-right would describe you as a degenerate.”
Of course, there is a reason they want to create a leader of the Alt-Right. As with #GamerGate, they need to identify a leader in order to destroy him. And it doesn't help their cause that so many well-known members of the Alt-Right refuse to talk to them. I get numerous requests from reporters and I ignore all of them. I am not the only one. Cernovich has a similar policy. So does Stefan.

I'm also a member of #GamerGate, after all. I know the media's routine and I won't play along with it. I can't speak for the Alt-White branch, I'm happy to leave that to TRS and Richard Spencer, among others, but as far as the Alt-West goes, there are no leaders, there will be no leaders, and neither me nor anyone else speaks officially for what is neither a group nor a movement, but a philosophical identity.

To ask "who is the leader of the Alt-West" is like asking "who is the leader of the left-handed people" or "who is the leader of those whose favorite color is blue"? There is no answer.

And as for the true face of the Alt-Right, we all know the correct answer is: "Pepe, and Kek is his Apotheosis."

Why is there a frog standing directly behind Trump?

That’s Pepe. He’s a symbol associated with white supremacy.

Wait. Really? White supremacy?

That’s right.

Please explain.

Here’s the short version: Pepe is a cartoon frog who began his internet life as an innocent meme enjoyed by teenagers and pop stars alike.

But in recent months, Pepe’s been almost entirely co-opted by the white supremacists who call themselves the “alt-right.” They’ve decided to take back Pepe by adding swastikas and other symbols of anti-semitism and white supremacy.

“We basically mixed Pepe in with Nazi propaganda, etc. We built that association,” one prominent white supremacist told the Daily Beast.

Trump has retweeted his white supremacist supporters with regularity, but the connection between the alt-right and his campaign continues to strengthen. Trump has been slow to disavow support from Ku Klux Klansmen and white supremacy groups, and he recently hired Breitbart.com’s Steve Bannon as his campaign CEO (and Bannon isn’t shy about the fact that his “news” organization is the “platform for the alt-right”).

Now white supremacists have given Pepe the cartoon frog some Trump hair—and the candidate’s own son says he is “honored to be grouped with” him.

Let me get this straight: Trump’s presidential campaign is posting memes associated with white supremacy online?

Yes.

But it’s just his son and one of his closest advisers, right?

Nope.

Just curious: Who else is in this photo?

Notably, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who believes the government was behind the 9/11 (and that Newtown was “completely fake”), and Breitbart’s Milo Yiannopoulos, whose racism and bigotry is so egregious that Twitter banned him from using their site.

This is horrifying.

Yes.

What can I do?

Vote.

***

Please, please, please, Coffin Hill. I'm begging you, girl. Make your "explainer" into a campaign commercial.

My top 3 favorite lies:

3. "Pepe is a cartoon frog who began his internet life as an innocent meme enjoyed by teenagers and pop stars alike." - Pepe got his start as a meme portraying himself, stoned and pissing at a urinal with his pants around his ankles, saying "feels good." Not exactly innocent...but I guess if we don't concern ourselves with the needs of the poor, downtrodden and oft-forgotten pop stars, no one will.
2. The absolute hamhanded interchange between white supremacy and "alt-right." The three sub-90 IQ mouthbreathers who show up for this "explainer" will be very confused by the linguistics.
1."Breitbart’s Milo Yiannopoulos, whose racism and bigotry is so egregious that Twitter banned him from using their site." These dopes spelled "faggotry" wrong.

I'm still trying to figure out the rhetorical reasoning behind "basket of deplorables." I understand from Scott Adams's analysis that effective persuasion is novel; but still, it has to have referents to be comprehensible.

I finally figured out the basket part is an oblique reference to going to Hell in a handbasket, and the joke "where are we going, and why are we in this handbasket?" So it's "to Hell with these guys!" But I still don't get deplorables.

A good way to interpret that kind of rhetoric is by the movie associations that people made. And memes were made of "The Expendables" and "Despicable Me," neither of which I've actually seen. How would those have been intended to be bad associations?

Blogger pdwalker September 16, 2016 1:25 AM

@71-Your head on a platter image and the mention of John the Baptist upthread bring to mind Salome. Which in turn brings to mind Sunset Boulevard, and Hillary as Norma Desmond is intriguing. Except Norma was still attractive enough, for her age, and her Bill (Holden), though with her under some duress, wasn't thoroughly disgusted by her.

Also, she was mentally deranged, like Hillary probably is, but only mentally deranged. The rest of her wasn't deathly ill, as I recall.

He's an alien faggot. We're pro-civilizationalists. He can use small words on TV and sigh and roll his eyes and wave his hands around, while we talk about what it takes to keep Western Civ going, which is making white babies; which he isn't doing due to gay, and arguably can't due to Jew, and arguably wouldn't even try due to mudshark.

And we understand that about each other, I think. He likes Western Civ and wants to keep it going, and we like having a rhetorical sharpshooter who can go on TV.

@80-Have you seen the movie Sunset Boulevard? Gloria Swanson plays Norma Desmond, a demented former silent movie star in the 50s who lassos a down on his luck screenwriter, played by William Holden, into editing her script for a movie about Salome. Which is to be her comeback picture, but she's nuts and the script sucks.

Things go bad, in ways I won't spoil but at the end she's still sure she's going to be a star. Her ambition is undying. I can't wait for Hillary, who is similarly motivated and possibly as demented, to say in her concession speech, "I'm ready for my oath, Justice Roberts."

This is not say they are all beyond redemption.

I got stuck looking after the Embed during the hot phase of OIF.

Spent half the war standing on her helmet to keep her idiot head down. When she needed to make a headcall, she would set up a little tent to do it. This was in the middle of desert, in the middle of a war and tent was bright, bright orange.

Basically she was a completely useless spoiled little rich girl SJW Eloi.

Near Nasiriyah, she saw from a distance Saddam's troops shelling some village. "Why are they doing that?" She cried.

"They are going to say, that we did it," Cataline said and I was right BTW. "They are counting on people like you to believe it and repeat it."

She went quiet and then treated everyone around her to a screaming display of profanity. I think she was cursing herself more than anyone else.

Last I heard she was a lobbyist for the NRA.

She does regret leaving her cozy world. In her own words, "it's like leaving a cult. You are that shunned and cut off when you get out of it."

Only if they all head off in different directions or start infighting. I see some value in viewing the AltRight (and in being viewed by others) as a loose alliance rather than a monolithic ideological bloc. It reduces the inclination to declaim those from another 'bifurcation' when they use tactics you wouldn't. You can just say, "Stormers be stormers" and move on.

It also increases the number of potential "leaders" for the media to hunt down, making it harder to single anyone out.

To be fair, the alternate rendering is "IN a charger" - an old term, to be sure, but one more suggestive of basket than platter, as these words are currently understood.

Likely a dish of some sort, so either could be used.

"a bowl or deep dish. The silver vessels given by the heads of the tribes for the services of the tabernacle are so named (Num. 7:13, etc.). The "charger" in which the Baptist's head was presented was a platter or flat wooden trencher (Matt. 14:8, 11; Mark 6:25, 28). The chargers of gold and silver of Ezra 1:9 were probably basins for receiving the blood of sacrifices."

The word used in different translations are charger, platter, plate, dish, disco (Latin)... While it may make a difference in terms of visuals, it doesn't make a difference WRT effect on his mother when presented or theologically.

No risk, this is an open source movement. People jump on the bus they like, and do what energizes them. More buses means more people find a bus they like and travel with us - all that matters is that the busses be traveling in company.

As long as we have one or more common goals, splitting the streams increases each stream's volume, and the total momentum.

Interesting, thanks. It does make a difference mechanically. A flat plate with no rim can't hold much stray fluid and the head would tend to roll off onto the floor, spoiling the presentation. The higher the rim is, the better the vessel contains. But if the rim is too tall that would also spoil the presentation. A rim height of a few inches, say more than 2" and less than 8" would both contain and present. 2" is maybe a charger, good for the short-distance entry and present; 8" is more like a pot or basket, good for traveling longer distances with your decapitated head. Hope that helps.

Maybe "to Hell in a handbasket" comes from beheading by guillotine. The head falls into a basket, and then is carried off stage. Also, for storage and transportation efficiency, a basket can hold more than a single Deplorable, but not as much as a VLCC.

Thesis. The atmosphere these days has similarities with other pre-revolutionary times. Uneasy things are in the air but not spoken of in public. Everyone, from the illegal immigrant on up, senses it to whatever degree. Hillary's use of the phrase "basket of Deplorables" was neither a rhetorical gaffe (discussed on the VP blog) nor the meaningless ramblings of a psycho bag lady (as Scott Adams would have it). It was a precise, calculated signal designating, painting, anyone who cares to support nationalism, the alt-right in particular.

Anonymous Pennywise September 16, 2016 12:15 PM

Milo is one of the faces of the franchise known as the Alt-Right. Their leaders might not be front and center in the conventional way, but he and others are the philosophical forces behind the movement. That is not even debatable.

Milo serves as a useful idiot, yet poses a significant risk to Alt-Right Christians to their credibility as defenders of Western Civilization and of their faith. He, as a practicing Catholic, flaunts his homosexuality and hedonism in the face of Biblical teachings against such inclinations, and promotes the mixing of the races in the face of racial and ethnic homogeneity.

Certainly his allies on the Alt-Right will refuse to openly condemn his decidedly anti-Christian positions--because muh friend--but God will judge those who seek not to redeem him publicly and privately.

Milo is tolerated only because he is anti-establishment and anti-cuck, but when the race war begins in earnest, and the partitioning begins, and the Christian Alt-Right gains a foothold in government and social institutions, I wonder if his allies will come to his defense as the "exception", and not be executed.

And, if the Alt-Right is not a viable political right, nor, in the scope of American history, is it really an alternative. Rather it is the latest iteration in an old, poisonous strain of American thought, albeit with new enemies, such as Muslims, enlisted alongside the old ones. “Fifty years ago these people were burning crosses,” says Jonathan Greenblatt of the Anti-Defamation League, a venerable anti-racist group. “Today they’re burning up Twitter.”
