Train crash in Hoboken

A train didn't stop and crashed into the station in Hoboken, New Jersey:
At least one person is dead and more than 100 people hurt when a NJ TRANSIT train crashed into the station in Hoboken, causing serious damage and snarling train service during the Thursday morning rush.

Earlier reports indicated that three people had been killed in the crash. But Assemblyman Raj Mukherji, who represents Hoboken, said transit officials told him only one person had died and two were critically injured.

“We’re just praying at this point that the death toll doesn’t rise,” Mukherji told CBS2.

The exact extent of the other victims’ injuries is unclear. A number of area hospitals have been treating the victims, including at least 40 people who were taken to Jersey City Medical Center.

It’s still unclear what exactly caused the train to crash. Images from the scene posted to social media showed mangled metal, wires, concrete and other debris scattered all over the floor. It appears part of the ceiling also collapsed.

“It simply did not stop,” WFAN anchor John Minko, who witnessed the crash, told 1010 WINS. “It went right through the barriers and into the reception area.”
We'll see whether human error or instrument failure or something else was the reason for the crash, but I can't help but think of the fact that failing infrastructure is a predictable consequence of lower average IQ.

I knew two railroad engineers of the Hispanic persuasion who were not passing their training, and turned to the race card. Rather than face lawsuits, the railroad carried them on the books as engineers and paid them accordingly, but employed them in lesser jobs. Better than having a train wreck, I suppose.

@22 The game in recent years was to expand "social programs" staffed by "non-government employees" whose entire livelihood is tax-paid (of course.)

I figure this was actually a Deep State, Permanent Bureaucracy move to create a massive, millions-and-millions strong Patronage Army whose main purpose would be to resist, tooth and nail, every single attempt to rein in social welfare spending.

They learned, the last time welfare was "cut," to emulate the Military Industrial Complex and spread "interested parties" into every single congressional district.

All roads lead to ruin now. Far too many people would have to agree to gore their own ox in order to slow or turn Leviathan's Juggernaut.

Thomas shouted to James as he continued to steam into the station and said, "I know who the Fat Controller works for!"

"Really?" James asked. "How do you know that?"

"I saw some of his emails the other day and they came from the DNC. They made it clear that Harambe was an ins-"

Crash! James looked on in horror as his friend went through the bumpers and smashed at full speed into the station turning into an iron wreck, and taking Annie and Clarabel with him.

"I'm supporting Hillary Clinton," James said loudly and slowly, careful in his enunciation. "For my own personal safety."

Unless there is some enormous deviation from normal; this train should have been operating at "restricted speed":

Rule 80 of the NORAC Operating Rules which NJT uses:

80. Movement at Restricted Speed

Movements made at Restricted Speed must apply the following three requirements
as the method of operation:

1. Control the movement to permit stopping within one half the range of vision
short of:

a. Other trains or railroad equipment occupying or fouling the track,
b. Obstructions,
c. Switches not properly lined for movement,
d. Derails set in the derailing position,
e. Any signal requiring a stop.

AND

2. Look out for broken rail and misaligned track.

AND

3. Do not exceed 20 MPH outside interlocking limits and 15 MPH within interlocking
limits. This restriction applies to the entire movement, unless otherwise specified
in the rule or instruction that requires Restricted Speed

It is highly unlikely that there was a mechanical failure of the brakes, for a variety of reasons.

Of course, the NTSB will investigate, but I can almost guarantee some element of operator error or physical incapacitation.

Also, don't believe the crap coming from politicians. You want to see how much politicians know about trains, here's a video where Richard Blumenthal nearly turned his face time into snuff film.

My school achieved ACT growth above "expected" levels determined by socioeconomic and other categories. The test can be gamed by preparation and practice. Students can be taught tricks and such that improve their scores.

IQ tests cannot be gamed this way. People do not get better and better each time they take an IQ test or else the test would be useless, sort of like the ACT is.

Believe me, the ACT scores that I hear students get at my school do not match their IQ levels.

Also, the modern SAT is no longer an IQ test either, as they've changed it into another version of the ACT test.

Trains (particularly passenger trains in major metro areas) have extensive fail-safes to prevent this exact scenario. It had to have been intentional.

The train with the gay dude was crashed due to speeding, pretty simple to do. This was not simple. Takes more than a rubber band around a dead-man handle to bypass the automatic systems, which will stop a train without operator intervention.

I mean, literally, they sign a check and there goes the money. They don't actually call it "graft" in the budget, I think it's something like "community relations" or "arts", but there it is.

Apparently the train was doing about 15 and did not speed up so probably not a muslim doing muslim things this time. I just copied this comment from reddit that probably explains it:

There's reports the engineer was unconscious. Maybe 2 weeks ago my Train leaving Hoboken on the Bergan line was canceled at Secacaus because the engineer passed out from fumes that had leaked into the cockpit (not sure if thats the name for the place where you drive a train from). Maybe that's what's happened here. It might explain why the train was at normal speed when it went through the barrier.

Blogger AdognamedOp September 29, 2016 6:20 PM

I heard the train was going 30mph. Looking at video of the damage seems to confirm this. What's interesting is that the conductor was reported to be in critical condition but was released from the hospital already.

I think, in large part, our failing infrastructure is due to our failure to spend enough to maintain it. Now that may well be due to larger number of dumber voters voting for politicians who buy their votes, using money that would otherwise go to infrastructure maintenance.

One of the things I noted from Asimov's Foundation series was that as the empire declined, the ability to maintain infrastructure also declined. In my daily travels, I frequently note things like broken elevators and broken automated door-closers, and they typically take weeks to be fixed. When I was a kid, I don't recall any such devices being broken at all, much less being broken for weeks. Seriously concerned about the decline I'm seeing.

So now they're pulling from sub-saharan and bought-my-bedouin-cousin's-way-in Saud imports? It's no wonder maintenance and worse is shot!

How much nicer would it be if MARTA was a transportation network, and not just a ruse in order to keep the Dindus underground?

> I grew up just outside Seattle, where each city councilman has several million in the budget to personally dispose of as they see fit, with no reporting, no audit, no accountability, no way for anyone to veto. I mean, literally, they sign a check and there goes the money. They don't actually call it "graft" in the budget, I think it's something like "community relations" or "arts", but there it is.

WV used to have a similar feature for their state level representatives. There was a lot of talk about doing away with yet about 10-15 years ago, but I honestly don't remember what happened. Regardless, the budgets have gotten tight enough the past several years that I doubt the checks are as big as they used to be.

automated safety systems have been around for years and years, and I thought they were mandated...

and

Maintenance is a rather high IQ concept...

Those fail-safes are electro-mechanical devices, and they need maintenance too. Deadman switches can get stuck in the on position, relays can rust closed, sensors can get gummed up or come disconnected...

Was that the feature where they could spend as much federal money as they wanted on something as long as they named it after Robert Byrd?

You may be right, although I do have a complete set of the game cards sitting on the shelf next to me. However, some of my local politicians state that we don't have any more money for infrastructure maintenance, yet they are more than happy to spend more tax dollars on social programs and arts programs.

Oh, well, there you have me. Because politicians have never, ever, ever been known to lie. Plus they've never, ever been known to buy votes and short change infrastructure.

Here's another shocker for you: sometimes money is poured in the top of the government machine for "maintenance" or "infrastrcture" and due to corruption most of it winds up in people's pockets. Really! I'm not kidding!

Although I didn't word it very well, my plaint was mostly about our priorities.

In my state a whole lot of money is allocated to highways. Some of it actually winds up in things like bridges and repaving and new
concrete. Some. Yet we are continually screamed at "MOAR MONEY FOR HIWAYS!" even as political insiders skim year after year.

No, I'm not cynical. I'm realistic.

The money is there in theory. Where it winds up is a different issue.

BTW, a paradox is not two physicians.

Sometimes when I read this blog(every day or so I try to catch up), and the culture of social justice is discussed, I can see parallels with *Atlas Shrugged* or at least the good parts before it got a little far fetched IMO.
SocJus in action will have real consequences, though I have no clue the reasons for the crash, nor would I sum up every accident in history to ineptitude or social justice snafus.
Just my first instinct to make the connection with the book.

Exactly. In a certain mitten-shaped state in the Midwest, the Orange Barrel Mafia blocks off three quarters of the freeways in the state from the time it stops snowing in April until the snow starts again in October or November. For example, they dig up and re-pave the same section of I-275 going past Livonia year after year after year, world without end, amen. Locals theorize that this is the Coleman A. Young Memorial Perpetual Jobs Program for Diverse Urban Yoots, who can be seen every summer, all summer long, standing around in groups of fifty to sixty, smoking cigarettes and eating sandwiches as they lean on their shovels, watching one white guy with a jackhammer do actual work, though usually far from the places in actual need of repairs--like, say, I-75 from the Ohio state line all the way up to Detroit and the Ambassador Bridge.

Michigan has the worst highways in the Midwest, and the highest truck weight limits in the Midwest, which is probably not a coincidence. Any suggestion to bring the truck weight limits in line with those in neighboring states is shouted down in the state legislature, lest GM close its last remaining plant in Pontiac and lay off those last four UAW members who get paid $103 an hour to sit around drinking Cisco Red and smoking blunts all day while waiting for someone else to unload that one car from the conex box from Mexico, so they can bolt on the tires (possibly the wrong way) and slap on the stickers that say "MADE WITH PRIDE IN THE USA," without whom the state's economy would finish collapsing.

The safety devices are seen as a nuisance, and they are usually bypassed by the technician because the operator/driver complains about it. If it doesn't get bypassed, it will be taken up with his boss. Few people will stand up for safety on principal if it means they will lose their job.

Lower IQ see maintenance as fixing broken things. Higher IQ knows that you should prevent things from getting broken in the first place, hence maintenance.

89. RabidRatel: Bypassing those safety devices is not a rule violation, it is a crime. Railroads got tired of arguing with unions and got Congress to outlaw a number of unsafe practices. Now, instead of getting the union griever to straighten things out, the shitheaded engineer can explain it to a jury. Few people will disable a safety device if it means losing the best job they ever had and maybe going to jail if they want to fight it. Except maybe Negroes.
