Clearing up the Gab drama

@a of Gab explains what was happening yesterday with regards to Gab:
I want to clear up the confusion about some baseless claims that have been made against myself, the company, @e, and our entire #GabFam earlier today. A few weeks ago we started vetting some potential early investors and senior-level technical employees to help us continue to grow Gab and promote free speech.

We exercised extreme vetting and slowly attempted to build trust, judge character, and team fit. Unfortunately our trust was broken after a toxic attack on our community and libelous falsehoods were sent to the press by certain people we were vetting.

I want to make a few things very clear:
  • The co-founders of Gab are myself and @e. Period.
  • @e and I have completely self-funded Gab by ourselves with no pay for months.
  • We have not accepted one outside investor.
  • Our donations Paypal account is a business account and attached to a business bank account. The email address used for the Paypal account is my business email address. I will be updating this to “donate@gab.ai” to clear up confusion. We will be adding much more transparency and value-adds for donors over the next several days.
We have been attacked by the press. We have been attacked by anonymous trolls. We have been attacked by folks that we trusted and had high hopes for. Each time we have emerged a stronger, more unified community. Thank your for continuing to support us and our mission of putting people first and promoting free speech for all.
I can vouch for @a's version of events. At the exact same time "certain people" were falsely claiming to have been co-founders of Gab on Gab, there was a concerted script attack on the login page, connected to the page about Gab, which I believe to have been an attempt to edit the page and repeat the same baseless claims there.

SJWs are not the only entryists. Startups, in particular, are often targeted by predatory investors and pseudo-entrepreneurs. And sometimes they are successful. See the history of Facebook for the most notorious example.

I saw that drama and was puzzled but then thought the many times in history (the 60s and 70s especially) when organizations were infiltrated by the State for the purposes of creating confusion in order to destroy those organizations. And yes, I am making reference to COINTELPRO. There is a factional war going on..... again.

Blogger Salt October 06, 2016 8:11 AM

Yeah, saw the drama unfolding. Figured subversives and a way to fight back... so I clicked on the donate button.

Correct. Last time the alt-left was the target. This time the alt-right is the target.

That means they are the new counterculture. Ain't it sweet?

Blogger Al From Bay Shore October 06, 2016 8:22 AM

@3 Sad but true.
@4 It is sweet.

>>And yes, I am making reference to COINTELPRO. There is a factional war going on..... again.

Instead of a right wing establishment attempting to undo the left, the left on an institutional basis has won at least a temporary victory, and so, you know, they are the agents.

Blogger Johnny October 06, 2016 8:27 AM

You can tell what side a person is on by their morality. When you distil it down it is mainly choosing sides. The problem with the left is that the vanguard elite has its own domestic population as the enemy. That is why the right is preferable, their enemies are external.

And as an aside, that is why Hillary has gotten little traction (so far) on demonizing Russia. An external enemy is what us right wingers are susceptible to.

Speaking of attacks, what's the deal with Unz? It's been down over a day, though Steve Sailer had a mobile, scriptless version up for a while. Was it an attack or just a really bad database screw-up? A site with that kind of traffic and enemies should fail over to backup servers, or at the very least put up a notice about what's going on, so I'm guessing attack.

Blogger VD October 06, 2016 8:51 AM

It's an attack. The DMCA Takedown of my link to Steve Sailer's article on Unz Review was the harbinger.

Going to donate to Gab as soon as my request makes its way through the queue. Then I'm going to start getting the word out on every platform I have. It would be great if we could get the Donald to switch to Gab during the election season, but unfortunately the scale isn't large enough in time.

Per the recent Brainstorm, I realize that an ongoing donation is more helpful than a one time, although both are very welcome.

Already a small monthly supporter of InfoGalactic.

Blogger Student in Blue October 06, 2016 9:11 AM

Sounds like Steve Sailer needs to start crossposting to Castalia House blog!

Alright, that's wishful thinking and that's not the same type of audience. But I wonder what Steve's considering at migrating to in case of emergency, if he's considered it at all.

Blogger Gapeseed October 06, 2016 9:13 AM

I'm having trouble seeing anything of value on the donations page. Is it down? Is there an alternate link where we can donate?

Blogger Servant of the Chief October 06, 2016 9:17 AM

Have to say I missed this, havent got on Gab just yet. Does anyone know who specifically was behind these shenanigans?

I question whether our world can improve without returning to the condition where, if someone wants to fuck with you they have to "do it in person" and are thus subject to getting properly shot in the face.

Our modern world offers far too much opportunity for people to snipe at you from the safety of their mom's basement or from deep inside the labyrinth of Leviathan. This condition is the ultimate Chaos Agent, and I strongly suspect it will act as a barrier to the improvement of the Human Condition until it is removed by the collapse of civilization.

As to being counterculture now? No, it isn't sweet. I don't think so. I much preferred when we were simply known as culture.

It's possible to return, just crush feminism (they are helping), and the repatriation of even 20 or 30 million who aren't ready to belong, with the solid threat of more as needed. Then fixing some access to power issues... like no rep without taxation and a few others.

These days, SJWs, predatory investors, and pseudo-entrepreneurs might well be one and the same. Or at least, the latter use SJW ideology to enlist lackeys, hackers and hate mobs from among the rabbits... and all sorts of malevolent powers from the state on down... in their service.

I got logged off of Gab yesterday, and was to lazy to look for my password until today. I was wondering what the drama about the donate button was about, which I heard was Vox's idea. A donate button seems like such an obvious and uncontroversial thing to have so I was scratching my head as to why that would have any drama.
Thanks for the explanation.
And buying something to shut it down is a pretty common tactic.
Oh, and someone on Gab followed me yesterday or the day before and their profile said "Gab co-founder, Ex-Googler" but the account seems to have disappeared now. So, fake?

Anonymous szIlk October 06, 2016 9:55 AM

Instead of proposition nation we have become propaganda. nation. It is not the basement snipers that are the problem but institutional support for the other side.

@22. Vi M:

A "Chris Barlow (@cdb)" followed me on or about the 4th (only know through an email notification, and the account is gone), according to a search on Gab appears to be a or the guy who was claiming to be a co-founder and stirring up shit. This not unexpected. Gab and ilk, the great Fork, will attract much resistance. The old twiter, facebook, etc., are/were great weapons in them against us. Screw it. Keep the engines at max and damn those pesky torpedoes.

If Lee is bothering to write an article about it, then it means that someone from the admin is beating the war drums for strikes against Assad.

All I know about Gab is that, even though I don't do the whole Twitter/Facebook thing, I decided to sign up in order to support the cause. Unfortunately, one of my browsers can't access it, another couldn't get the email to click, and the third finally got through, putting me in the 80+ thousand range in the queue.

That's not the way to get things rolling, so I hope that they get that sort of stuff worked out.

It's been 15 days and I still haven't gotten my invitation email from Gab.ai. Double checked my spam folder and all that was there is my "welcome to the queue" email from registering. For those who've already made it onto Gab.ai, is that normal?

I don't know what all the drama was about. I can say that I've been using Gab and I like it. It's not Facebook or Twitter with all the SJWs crawling up in everybody's business. Just yesterday we had #FreeRicky caper running on Twitter, as the SJWs have continued to flex their muscle over users of that platform. Gracious, who wouldn't want an alternative to what they are hoping to do to Twitter?

I heard @a speak at the Brainstorm and I liked him and his attitude. I want him to succeed and also make a living. He's really not asking too much.

Using Brave browser the past few days and finding the scroll wheel puts the cursor at the bottom of the page. A brave help forum states, a few weeks ago, that it's being looked into.

No it doesn't. I've been in the stack for MONTHS and I still get nothing. I'd like to help but they don't seem to have their act together.

Do they have any idea how many users they are missing. Must be in the tens of thousands.

This, plus my 2 day acceptance, suggests one of two problems: They've got database integrity issues, in which case they'd better fix them fast, or that their outgoing emails are not always making it---and note that they can be intercepted as spam and trashed before hitting your spam folder (this is necessary given the volumes of spam emails, but problematic)---and that they need to add one or more additional mechanisms to recover if that one email doesn't make it.

And if you wonder about evil and SJW convergence, my email address is provided by one of the least converged of the big names....

m

.ame as Sam above. I put in on Sept 21, when Vox put the word out, nothing, no acknowledgement, no emails, nothing. That was with my gmail address.

As a test, I have tried using the "Forgot password" link on the login page, as that should allow you to set the password if the account is present. Unfortunately, the account may or may not be present before you finish the registration at the link they send you in the invitation email. Not knowing how the backend is structured, it's impossible to tell, and I have only failed tests to go by.

That Would Be Talking wrote:they need to add one or more additional mechanisms to recover if that one email doesn't make it.

That one thing, a button on the front page to check the status, keyed off of your email address, would resolve a lot of this uncertainty.

Anonymous Random American October 06, 2016 5:10 PM

I'm another one on the "got nothing" list. Submitted my email on Sept 23rd I believe, have received no reply email at all.

I really do hope they get their issues resolved, social media alternatives are very much needed.

At first thought that's a great idea, but I can't think of a way to implement it without aiding doxing, other than trying to send an email to the same address again, which, if the way Gab is sending notification emails is triggering early stage spam detection, would make things worse.

Ah, how about a ticketing system, when you sign up, on the website as well as in your initial email you get a number like those when you wait for service, and the home page would display the current number "served", if your number is equal to or less, your account has been set up.

Although they still need a working email account for general Gab account maintenance, and you have to be careful about serializing something that you could previously do in parallel (incrementing that number) . Also not a very user friendly thing if you never get your initial email.

Anonymous Heywood October 06, 2016 5:46 PM

I'm at 2+ weeks too, Nathanael. There's been stories around here of people getting in the same day who registered after that point, so I'm assuming something's glitchy over there. I wanted in to support the notion for all the obvious reasons, but seeing as I've skipped on Twitter and Faceborg both, I'm kinda starting to think they're doing me a favor - last thing I need is yet another time sink.

But I would jump all over it if they finally did come around. Man's a curious creature.

Blogger Vi M October 06, 2016 8:28 PM

If you are still on Twitter and waiting a while of your Gab invite, try asking @getongab if they can look into it.
Or if it's really been a while, try using a different email domain to request an invite.

Word of warning for the gab http://www.anonymousconservative.com/blog/fedguv-intelligence-was-perusing-yahoo-emails/

What does that mean? LE wants these emails, so they put Marissa Meyer under surveillance until they find something they can blackmail her with. Are her taxes funky? Is she banging her personal assistant and her husband doesn’t know? Does her son have a smack problem? 99 times out of a hundred, there will be something somewhere, with somebody the target cares for. When you have the power of the US government, you can always find it. Nobody running these important tech companies is really living free.

Slightly OT:

Not sure where you do the bug reports, but the infogalactic.com throws the following on some pages:

Lua error: callParserFunction: function "PROTECTIONEXPIRY" was not found

Not sure who is taking care of this, and if this was reported already.
Don't know all your internals, but from the looks of it, modules from WIKIPEDIA are newer version than what sits on infogalactic. Either need to use updated mediawiki version, or pull older copies from wikipedia that use supported modules.
