Project Big Fork and the Disconvergence

If you'd like to take part in the Open Brainstorm session tonight in which I'll be announcing Project Big Fork to the Ilk and discuss the Disconvergence with two other pioneers in the Alt-Tech movement, you can register here. There are 1,000 seats, but they are filling up fast.

The event will take place at 7 PM Eastern tonight.

I can't make the Brainstorm, but I'm looking forward to supporting the Big Fork in whatever way I can, within my limited knowledge of computing/social media.

Likewise, I can't make tonight, but I am down for the struggle

Blogger James Dixon October 03, 2016 9:49 AM

I'll be tied up tonight, so no attending for me. :(

I've had to cancel, dang it.

Heartbroken (well, disapointed)... Stuck at a function out of town. Any chance of a recording / podcast for after?

I will bring the bacon wrapped jalapeños stuffed with goat cheese and wild boar sausage

I take it Big Fork is a techno-forking of something. I'm feeling intense personal pressure to apply for the VFM initiation process...

Crud. It's right during my bible study.

Come, join us. You have nothing to lose but the useless part of your will that does not leap to the whims of the Dark Lord.

Can't make it, but Godspeed to the rest of ya.

My only big idea for this domain is to use the Linux philosophy for video games. Shift DeviantArt from degeneracy into an open-source graphics and art repo that can be copy-pasted into game projects via standardization.

I'm going to make it work for the first time. I've never managed to get to a Brainstorm because 4pm Pacific time is just unworkable. But for AltTech, I'll make it happen, somehow.

I signed up although I'm not sure how my evening will go, so I'll put this up front for consideration. Jonathan Haidt proposes forking academia.

Haidt ultimately contended that the best way to overcome the challenges posed by the shifting priorities in higher education is a “schism” – a clean division between universities that choose to pursue truth above all else, and those that prioritize the advancement of social and political causes.

“We need schools to be physically separated,” Haidt said. “Some can pursue truth as their mission, some can pursue social justice, but none can pursue both.”

Personally, I don't think that it's doable. Pretty much every University of note is already either fully converged or too far down that road to be recoverable.

@15
The big issue with higher education is accreditation. Credentialism rests on it. There are other ways to certify someone as competent in an area, the skilled trades do it all the time. But universities are still stuck with accreditation.

The other club in the US is federal funds. Take one penny and a dumptruck load of requirements hit. Hillsdale and Grove City do not take any Federal student loan money because of that.

Blogger Aeoli Pera October 03, 2016 1:45 PM

The reason accreditation matters is because Americans are unwilling to accept the predictive power of IQ tests, because it invalidates one of their most treasured Gnostic myths (mind over matter, such willpower, incredibru). So having a giant edifice of hoop-jumping is a feature of academia, not a bug, because it obscures the process and facilitates denial.

Otherwise, academia could be entirely replaced by standardized skill and aptitude tests, for a millionth of the cost.

Just registered. As a "full-stack" dev myself I can't wait!

Accreditation agencies are just guilds of Universities. If you have a group of Universities, they can form their own accreditation agency, that publishes their own standards to which all members must subscribe. It might take a while for it to gain authority, but most colleges are members of more than one accreditation collective. adding a fourth or fifth is not really a burden.

You're missing out. This announcement rocks!

It's like a heat seeking missile into the heart of SJW darkness.

Put the Gab logo on the Roma jersey!

Looking forward to getting the information out about this NEXT week, not this week.
Going to slowly hit all my social channels, don't want to overload the servers.

Blogger Were-Puppy October 03, 2016 8:32 PM

This is very exciting.
If I can free up some time, maybe i can help with some editing.

Blogger Garuda1 October 03, 2016 8:36 PM

It was a great Brainstorm (my first as a long-time lurker), and seeing the push back against institutional convergence is pulling me back into the fight. I'm waiting for my Gab invite, but once that's sorted I'll be sure to open up some communication with the regulars here to see how I can lend my skills to the struggle.

P.S. Since I don't usually comment on blogs, just wanted to give a shout-out to Nate, my fellow Ace Combat and wheel gun aficionado!

Anonymous Helton Strom October 03, 2016 9:04 PM

Good brainstorm. First one. Won't be the last.

Best wheelguns are M198 :-0
... Oh, you didn't mean guns on wheels?

Anonymous Grime Knight October 03, 2016 9:30 PM

Great brainstorm. First, #AltTech products & services. Next? #AltTech ICANN, #AltTech OS, #AltTech programming/scripting languages!!

Blogger Garuda1 October 03, 2016 9:31 PM

When you put it like that, all I can think of are those old 12-pounder cannons from the good days. Glorious wheels, those.
