SJW entry point: HR

Dr. Helen reviews a new book about Human Resources and how SJWS use it to converge corporations:
Silicon Valley and the tech industries are the next targets. If you're a manager at a tech company, we'll suggest some ways to protect your people from HR and its emphasis on credentials and affirmative action (AA) over the best fit for a position. Corporate leaders need to be sure their HR departments are managed to prevent infiltration by staff more interested in correct politics than winning products. And we'll show why appeasement of diversity activists is a dangerous strategy that may make your organization a target for further extortionate demands.

The next battlefield after high tech is discretion in hiring--which the activists believe must be limited to force employers to hire any candidate "qualified" for a job as soon as they apply. Only a few radicals are proposing this kind of blind hiring now, but continuing successes in getting firms to bow to their diversity demands will result in a list of new demands. We have already seen Seattle pass an ordinance requiring landlords to rent apartments to the first applicant who qualifies. And similar movements in hiring--supposedly to prevent discrimination by eliminating management choice of who to employ--are coming soon.
Of course, no one who has read SJWs Always Lie will be even remotely surprised by any of this. The good news is that all of this corporate convergence is creating a whole range of new opportunities as the converged corporations begin to pursue social justice objectives rather than serving their customers. It's not a question of whether SJWs can ruin a company they converge.

Once they've entered, it's only a question of when. And as long as we're on the subject of SJWs, this probably as good a time as any to mention the latest from Dark Lord Designs.

HR is a bureaucracy that is required to enforce various federal, state, and local laws. And it will do so selectively, arbitrarily, and unevenly to the benefit of fellow travelers. So we also need to be doing what we can to nuke or neuter those laws.

Dr. Helen is fashionably late to this party, but I take it as a sign that these ideas are no longer fringe. The battle is over in IT but the good news is that IT exists in the minds of the developers, not in the infrastructure. So replacements are a simple matter of getting two disillusioned programmers to cooperate for more than five minutes at a time.

Fast forward 3 months and the apartment has to be refurbished completely after several unknown people turned it into a drug den. Completely insane.

Even when I wasn't red pilled or woke or whatever, I knew that HR exists to protect the company from its employees, and so companies have a free hand to do whatever they want to said employees. Then one day I noticed HR is basically cat ladies and -1SD or lower types, usually with one white guy or two white women thrown in somewhere to keep shit on the rails.

Coincidentally or perhaps providentially i received my copy of the Harvard Business Review magazine today. I convinced my boss it was to utilize our self-learning budget (true), but my primary intention was to "know your enemy", in keeping with the Dark Lord's wise counsel.

Today I read an article about diversity. Turns out that introduction of affirmative action policies, sensitivity training, etc., actually makes companies LESS diverse. This is a consistent result across many industries, business sizes, and decades.

But what grounds my gears is the insistent presumption that diversity itself is an inherent good worthy of all the costs being thrown blindyat achieving it, without even an attempt by the worlds top business school to question this received wisdom.

Well I'm going to do just that. I'm going to lay out the arguments that;
- HR is a predatory parasite on the body corporate, whose resistance to such was/is weakened by managers abdication of their hiring and firing responsibilities, and
- that the correlation between diversity and sector success is a reverse causal relationship to that assumed by modern SJW dogma, in that only already-dominant players can afford this idiocy, which therefore acts as a significant barrier to competitive entry by smaller operations.

But what grounds my gears is the insistent presumption that diversity itself is an inherent good worthy of all the costs being thrown blindyat achieving it, without even an attempt by the worlds top business school to question this received wisdom.

That's got to be due to court decisions in the 1970's or early 80's, because by then "equal opportunity" wasn't out the way it was supposed to, a temporary measure to help the victims of Jim Crow catch up. There werent' that many Jim Crow victims anymore, not enough to go around. So "diversity" as a goal in itself had to be invented.

Now it's dogma. Can't be questioned. Even when it hurts the bottom line, by giving extra hiring bennies to some retarded Nigerian just off the airplane.

So totally go for it, Putnam's work shows the way. Just remember Bakke.

HR is like a gravity well for SJWs. They are just sucked into it by some as yet unknown law of the universe.

Almost as bad as HR offices and drastically more destructive to the country as a whole is University Admissions Deans.

MSU's Veterinary College used be consistantly ranked as in the top 1 to 3 in the world.

Now it's the 13th.

And the reason for that is Hilda Mejia Abreu, Assistant Dean of Admissions at that college as well as the Assistant Dean of Diversity and Inclusion.

She has wrecked that college's standing by drastically lowering the quality of the grad students she ushers into the doctoral program.

Blogger Basil Makedon October 17, 2016 12:45 PM

Yes, it's well known that HR exists merely to protect the Company from the Employees.

The massive, unreadable and barely coherent Policy Manuals exist for one reason and one reason only -- to ensure that every single employee of the Company is in repeated and constant violation of it. That way, if need be, the Company can fire people while simultaneously minimizing litigation.

I have always wondered why they were given so much credence. If you trace the origins of HR it was most corporations attempt to remain in compliance with the law without the expense of hiring an actual lawyer. Now corporations hire lawyers anyway (mainly because they are cheap due to an oversupply of them). HR really is obsolete and overvalued. They create more strife than they solve and most of the paperwork they perform could be done by admin assistants or clerks.

It's true, it's nice to have a "recruiter" sometimes but that activity can easily be accomplished by a contractor.

It's hard to find a tech company to work for these days that doesn't have SJWs in the mix already.

Blogger Thucydides October 17, 2016 1:14 PM

I remember reading Jerry Pournell's Chaos Manor describing how people could be hired on by companies like Boeing and be guided and trained throughout their careers, rising from the shop floor to become aeronautical engineers.

This was ended by a lawsuit back in the 70's (going by memory here) where the company in question had an internal promotions and training policy where employees simply had to be high school grads or have a GED and pass a working knowledge test (or something like that) to be considered for promotion. A "diverse" employee who failed the test and was passed over sued, and despite the fact that the company policy was completely objective (the job knowledge was particular for that company, and many white employees also failed the test and were passed over as well), the court ruled in favour of the "diverse" employee because racism.

Since then, companies have devolved the training to the school and university system, and HR has grown explosively to deal with the mountain of paperwork demanded by various bureaucracies, and in better companies, to try and identify the wheat from the chaff (since they are no longer allowed to do so in any normal fashion). Of course, if your enemies are doing the "sorting" in the school system and the HR department, then you're hooped (as they used to say).

This si a big problem in capital intensive industries, since it is hard to move, but IT should be effectively able to evade, a few coders working in the back of the garage have no overhead to hold them back, and a small enough group dynamic to not need much in the way of HR or Admin. Many companies are actually devolving to that point as an "unexpected" side effect of Obamacare (hire more than 50 people and you are entrapped by the bureaucracy), and we can hope that various techniques like 3D manufacturing will allow small companies to remain nimble and productive among the dinosaurs.

In fact, I daresay every social justice effort is an attempt to remove capital goods from people who can actually use them and give them to people who will break them, so that soon only financial powers and criminals actually own anything. The potential for social engineering is almost unlimited in that sort of dystopia.

@31.

I have always wondered why they were given so much credence. If you trace the origins of HR it was most corporations attempt to remain in compliance with the law without the expense of hiring an actual lawyer.

I hate to quote Scott Adams after his surrender, but HR is "like lawyers, but without the charm and verbal skills"

After over 20 years of dealing with these people, I have come to the conclusion that most have the following attributes.

Extremely passive aggressive: using policy manuals, the threat of investigation, access to senior executives and legal counsel and their idiotic tomes to acquire and maintain their power. Passive gamma management is their greatest friend.

Arrogant: Completely consumed with the idea that they are possessed of unique interpersonal skills and objectivity that if just given a chance, they can defuse any conflict. They also think that they can run the company better than those that do, which is why they attempt to interpose themselves in every matter.

Unaccountable: They are attracted to HR because it is completely unaccountable. There is no way to qualify and quantify what they do; they largely dictate the scope and methods of their activities. Whatever they do is effective and efficient because other HR departments are doing it, or because it is an SPHR best practice. "Diversity" was a godsend to these charlatans and their organization witchdoctory.

Closet Tyrants. They want you do their will, period. For all their pretentiousness about negotiation and conflict management, their ultimate recourse is fiat. I once ended a long drawn out conflict with one HR manager by calling her boss in advance over one of her hypocritical diktats (refused to all employee organization to have a concert as an activity because the sponsor was a historical group attempting to renovate a historic Church.) Her concluding sentence was "at some point you have to accept my judgment" and my response was "actually I don't, I already called your boss anticipating this response, he agrees with me and would like you to call him while I am still in your office". She never bothered me again.

Hard leftists: Most HRM degrees are filed with psychology, sociology and other courses that are little more than leftist indoctrination camps. They are often ab ovo, SJW's. It also means that that HR is filled with women.

We need to go back to the days when there was no "HR", their was "personnel" and they were largely responsible for clerical tasks.

Blogger Snidely Whiplash October 17, 2016 2:14 PM

I used to work for a woman whose only qualification for a management job was literally being the lesbian housemate of the assistant HR director. Her previous job was teaching remedial reading on the Indian reservation. I did all of her work for her, except for attending meetings. I didn't mind so much because I gave myself a 25% pay raise at evaluation time.

Going without HR is becoming a thing, especially in startups. In actual function, HR has only two essential functions, recruiting employees and managing employee benefits. There are any number of companies now that will manage benefits for you, for less than the cost of hiring your own HR staff that it has become common, even usual for companies, even quite large companies, to outsource this.
And, as far as recruiting, if the eventual result is hiring the less-competent, HR at that point becomes a net drag on the company.

Thucydides wrote:I remember reading Jerry Pournell's Chaos Manor describing how people could be hired on by companies like Boeing and be guided and trained throughout their careers, rising from the shop floor to become aeronautical engineers.
I grew up in Seattle, and knew two men, both sadly passed on now, that did exactly that at Boeing. One became a mechanical engineer, the other a materials engineer. I know one who works there right now, who graduated with a History degree that works at Boeing as an adhesives engineer.

Back in the 1950s, the basic qualifications were that they would look for the most dedicated, hardest workers, and ask them to take general IQ and math aptitude tests. Didn't matter what the job was, you just had to be the guy who showed up every day, did your job well, and didn't cause trouble.
If you were smart, and had an aptitude for math, they'd give you a 6-month interning gig, too see if you could fit in to the engineering office. If that was a go, they would pay for schooling, combined with working half-time in the engineering department. For a while they even brought in instructors to the factory.

Anonymous BigGayKoranBurner October 17, 2016 2:15 PM

And we'll show why appeasement of diversity activists is a dangerous strategy that may make your organization a target for further extortionate demands

You can see a show on youtube called Gaycation: Orlando,( a gay vacation show that covered the aftermath of the PULSE shooting) & see a lesbian Hispanic activist spewing more bile at the hospital that saved lives, then she did at the Afghani moslem who shot 102 victims. The hospital cucked & ended up offering to not charge for any of the victims care. You would think the hospital just doing their job would at least come up even versus the mass murdering moslem.

Related I hate having to explain that moslem mass murders are leftists because they want free stuff. When I seen someone say Omar Mateen and Adam Lanza are republicans, I have to point out "Omar Mateen's daddy campaigned for HERpes, and Lanza was a race reversed Omar Thornton, awkward"

to force employers to hire any candidate "qualified" for a job as soon as they apply.

They actually do a thing called banding where they will give people a test, decide the "qualified" score is just under the non Asian minority. Present to managers a list of all who passed by not any merit based info or scoring, with a recommendation to hire the lowest scorer. The worse person on the list is the one they push.

Closet Tyrants. They want you do their will, period. For all their pretentiousness about negotiation and conflict management

They came out of the Closet years ago.

Yeah, and their policies stop promotion. The current crop of politically correct professors exist because HR has promoted them while leaving equally academically able people at base levels (in the commonwealth: in the USA they don't get tenure).

The old system was that the title was cheap, keep the researchers happy and producing and ensure that enough people who can teach are promoted as well. It did lead to a lot of white blokes and functionally single women at the top.

Diversity is a luxury good. Bankrupt systems cannot afford luxury goods. This will not last.

Anonymous Bz October 17, 2016 3:08 PM

Perhaps HR too can be automated and outsourced. It seems a bit inefficient, don't you think?

Blogger residentMoron October 17, 2016 4:00 PM

Reason with 'em?

The late great Robert L Kocher wrote that:

"Fear of messing with you is the only thing some people understand."

Then again, my good friend Doug used to say that:

"Pain is the only truly international language; the one that EVERYBODY understands."

I find in these two statements a pleasing overlap.

In other news, BBC reports that:

"Eight men have been found guilty of 16 charges in connection with the sexual abuse of three girls in Rotherham.

The offences happened between 1999 and 2003.

The men, all from Rotherham, are Sageer Hussain, Mohammed Whied, Ishtiaq Khaliq, Waleed Ali, Asif Ali, Masoued Malik, Basharat Hussain and Naeem Rafiq.
"

Aside from a decade's abuse of 1400 girls producing 8 convictions on 16 charges relating to 3 victims, as you might imagine, I sincerely doubt all eight were "from Rotherham".

The purple really needs to be a matte purple for the full effect though. But I'm happy to root for the Vikings most weeks, especially week 11.

Yes, it's well known that HR exists merely to protect the Company from the Employees.

Actually, that's a sign of a healthy, properly functioning department. If a manager needs to fire or otherwise discipline an employee who's unproductive or disruptive, then an HR department that has his back for any lawsuits or threats is a good thing. Sure, sure, in the God Emperor's Great Again America, "You're Fired" will be far less complicated, but even then, a group of people who can smooth the inevitably unpleasant experience are useful.

The other proper functions of a Personnel Department (I like the old name a lot better) are:

1) support recruiting efforts (e.g. sign up for job fairs, pay the dues for job posting sites, negotiate with head hunters, etc)

2) handle all the government paperwork (W2's, W4's, etc).

3) Negotiate with benefits providers.

As basementhomebrewer said, a lot of that's being outsourced these days. For any particular company, like any other outsourcing, it's a question of whether you can do better with in-house staff. You can, but only if you're really, really good at hiring.

Which, if you are, well...

The primary reason management succumbs to sjw extortion, is the fear of costly drawn-out llitigation. This and all the rest of the cultural marxist agenda grew as the number of lawyers grew. I've already posted a diatribe against lawyers... the only way to stop leftists is to take away their weapons called lawyers.

In any traditional society the need for lawyers is mitigated by the higher levels of trust already in place. A key element for a better society is to reduce the number of lawyers by 95%.
