Social media spies

Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are spying on you for the Federal government:
The ACLU of California has obtained records showing that Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram provided user data access to Geofeedia, a developer of a social media monitoring product that we have seen marketed to law enforcement as a tool to monitor activists and protesters.

We are pleased that after we reported our findings to the companies, Instagram cut off Geofeedia’s access to public user posts, and Facebook has cut its access to a topic-based feed of public user posts. Twitter has also taken some recent steps to rein in Geofeedia though it has not ended the data relationship.

Further steps are required if these companies are to live up to their principles and policies by protecting users of all backgrounds engaging in political and social discourse. So today the ACLU of California, the Center for Media Justice, and Color of Change are calling on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to commit to concrete changes to better protect users going forward. Read our letters here and here.

We first learned about these agreements with Geofeedia from responses to public records requests to 63 California law enforcement agencies. These records revealed the fast expansion of social media surveillance with little-to-no debate or oversight.

But as we continued to comb through thousands of pages of documents, we saw emails from Geofeedia representatives telling law enforcement about its special access to Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram user data.
Seriously, even SJWs are going to be clamoring to switch to Alt-Tech social media sites soon. And frankly, even SJWs will be treated more fairly on Infogalactic than most of them are on Wikipedia.

My hope for alt-tech is a niche where reasonable people flee the greater internet. To that end I'm willing to put up with some bullshit.

In fact, one might say, a certain amount of bullshit is a natural filter. If it Just Works(tm) then you get Black Twitter. Was there a Black Usenet? No. Posting on Usenet required a minimum amount of intelligence.

New idea for Alt-Tech: captchas that require you to solve algebraic equations, etc.

So we're to believe that the ACLU of California, the Center for Media Justice, and Color of Change all of a sudden care about government stasi - which they long ago heavily infiltrated and likely control in league with their (((funders))) like (((Soros))), (((Zuckerberg))), Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, etc. - having too much access to user data? Magnificent Harambe-like wings on those pigs, no?

Remember the axiom: SJWS always lie. You really think they're being truthful about this?? All three organizations mentioned are 100% SJW. There simply has to be more to the story. It's probably something more along the lines of Geofeedia isn't being aggressive enough in helping them track down those keen "NotZees" so they can order in the Cuckley-Chuchian jackboots to shoot them as 'terror-rr-r-r-sts" who profane the holy name of Golden Dindu.

Anonymous Roundtine October 11, 2016 10:04 PM

Why does the government need a feed? Can't it see everything that's public on these sites? Technically, is there anything stopping anyone from reading everything on social media sites?

Oh good, we can trust them now. Because SJW's never lie (or did I get that backwards ???).

Anonymous Just Another Commenter October 11, 2016 10:05 PM

@12 - You can help them out by telling them the following: Lots of crime in the 'hood, and anywhere they put new Section 8 housing it's going to spike, and anywhere they drop a lot of refugees or allow illegals to start a ghetto crime will skyrocket... If they are good at collecting data, it will show that, because that is what it shows everywhere they do good data collection. But, because it's not PC, they bury it or are prohibited from using it. So they'll use it to target people who are not a problem politically, by making them a problem by paperwork and harassment.

We need a lot less government funding.

Perhaps a degree of privacy can be had, but I doubt it is genuinely possible to hide from government solely by the method of going to believed to be safe websites.

I regard myself as safe because I am unimportant. If I were ever really up to something I would buy a used laptop with cash and only use it at public internet hookups. Plus there would be the temptation to keep it in a foil lined suitcase, although I would pass on putting the foil under my hat. You really can not trust that they are not listening in.

Now that I think on it as more of a joke, it isn't. I can solve most trig and algebra fairly rapidly, but it's a bit of a barrier to most of the people I don't want to talk to.

The public feed doesn't necessarily include your IP address, cell phone number, physical location every 5 minutes, search history, network of contacts, income, current employment, work history, sexual preferences, health status, everything you are trying to keep secret, relationship status, current mood, every website you ever visit, radicalization level, use of forbidden words, off-books income, gambling or drug use, digital fingerprint, biorhythms, eating habits, reading, religious inclination, online purchases, etc etc etc.

The public feed isn't even close to 5% of the information Twatter of Facebook collects on you.

Facebook reminds me of those HVT intel networks the kill teams got for targets in Iraq, before Hussein Obola became King of America.

Except on Facebook, the HVT enters all the info needed to track them down and capture them. In Iraq, they had to dig up the info themselves, manually.

This is an observation people would have realized even back in 2007. Too late to get out if you've already been using FB or social media networking. The reason why the LEOs can track you is because you basically tell the network how to track you by your associations.

Blogger rho October 12, 2016 1:56 AM

Anonymity on the Internet is dead.

Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc. can track you on every site that has a Facebook/Google/Twitter/Etc widget. It's not perfect, nor is it permanent, but those are problems solved by faster processors and more storage. Tor won't save you either. It's a higher mountain to climb, to be sure, but more processors and more data will summit it.

Encryption isn't the answer. It's taller than any mountain, but we put men on the Moon with less computing power than TI puts into a $90 calculator. Encryption isn't a shield, it's a wager that the under is long after anybody gives a shit about whatever you decided needed encryption.

The First Amendment to the US Constitution is the best protection for a free Internet. It's the best argument against ceding control away from ICANN. There is, literally, no other similarly legally confined government on planet Earth.

I have a couple of suggestions for Alt-whatever endeavors: one, define your data retention policy publicly; two, enforce that policy programatically. It doesn't matter if you're incorporated in the Lesser Mauritanias, it only matters if somebody can recover data from your drives.

I'm waiting for the security camera feeds of the CTA to be made public, along with scans of certain local radio emissions.  You connect a particular cell phone with a particular social media account saying things about looting with a particular face getting off a train or bus in the commercial district... easy arrest.  These people are literally too stupid not to telegraph their criminal planning.

Yes, NSA can read every packet moving across the internet. To make that data useful it needs to be decrypted and then put into context, meaning placed in a searchable database of all relevant info. Those things take time and effort and money.

What the social media companies are doing is providing a ready made data product, decrypted and contextualized in time, space and relationship, that can be used as is or integrated into preexisting fedgov databases. And they're selling it.

Not only are these companies violating your privacy and helping the fedgov subjugate you but they are getting paid to do it.

Not only are they thieves but they are whores.

Frankly, leaving SJWs in the cesspool of their social media universe is the desired course of action. They can always suck it up and learn algebra so they can get past the Captcha, but that will also force them to think in different modes outside of Feelz, so even their attempts to infiltrate and converge Alt media will become a deadly trap for the SJW mindset.
