Do you still doubt?

Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in Israel, of all places, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Trump received 49% of the Israeli-American vote, while Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton got 44%, according to the poll conducted by get-out-the-vote organization iVoteIsrael and KEEVOON Global Research. Another 2% voted for Libertarian Gary Johnson.
I'll admit it, I did NOT see THAT coming. That suggests Hillary won't hold the usual heavy Democratic advantage among the Jewish vote. She won't hold it among, blacks, Hispanics, or women either. So, you know what that means....

UPDATE: Upon further review, this may not be good news after all. Obama only got 15 percent against Romney and 24 percent against McCain. Also, turnout was reportedly down 50,000 from 2012. I don't know what to make of that.

UPDATE: But news that Trump is now OH +5, AZ +5, NH +1, NC +3, NV +6, CO tie, and VA +3 in various state polls is all very promising indeed.

I am all for optimism, but I have read that Romney actually did even much better with this demographic back in 2012, so this is not such a big accomplishment.

Blogger VD November 03, 2016 12:04 PM

Yeah, I looked it up. McCain did better too. But the fact that turnout is down 63 percent may be more significant than the actual results.

I was just surprised; I know Israelis think very differently than US Jews, but I didn't realize their view on US politics were almost polar opposites.

It ain't over until the Fat Lady sings her concession aria.

The Israeli-Americans preference may not be representative of (((Americans) in general. A much more "up close and personal" experience of the "benefits" of living side-by-side with the adherents of the Religion of Peace could be the reason.

Shalom.

I think Israeli based American voters have always trended Republican, but this is an incredible result for Trump in the teeth of the ferocious hostility of US-based Jewish pundits.

Ezra Klein, David Frum, tiny Ben Shapiro, Nate Silver, Bill Kristol... your candidate is taking one helluva beating!

Anonymous Fran November 03, 2016 12:09 PM

I wouldn't stress on that Israeli polling just because Obama had the same numbers.
Remember they rigged the polls anyways..dead voters and rigged machines...I see it as further proof. I remember seeing Romney was surprised he didn't win. Cause he probably did win and that is why now Trump.

American Jews are wannabe elitist New Yorkers who are unabashedly proud that their fellow ethnics run the largest mafia in the country. The only thing that surprises me is that any of them vote Republican.

I don't trust the polls (good or bad) and I'm not even sure I'll trust the election results, but I am of good cheer. As a friend of mine said yesterday, whoever wins, the main job will get done - destroying the political establishment.

Trump has already mostly destroyed the GOPe, if he wins he'll finish them off and destroy the Dems too. And if Clinton wins, she'll start a war with Russia and Putin will nuke DC and NYC. Either way, the establishment is toast.

Blogger Bruce November 03, 2016 12:15 PM

Trump is channeling the sentiments espoused by Rabbi Meir Kahane of the Jewish Defense League. Rabbi Kahane railed against the Arabs and Muslims and condemned the Jewish regressive liberals of his day who defended those who would not hesitate to destroy them. That's the way of some Jews, however, they are the masters of feeling guilty. But as Rabbi Kahane said, "Paranoid Jews tend to live longer."

Blogger synp November 03, 2016 12:34 PM

I think I can explain this. First, the obvious: Israelis don't vote in the American elections. Expatriate Americans do. These are people who have left the US to live in Israel. People who have done that are far more likely to be both religious and right-wing than the average American Jew.

Second, people living in Israel are more acutely aware of the anti-semitism of the left than they are of the anti-semitism of the right. The left aligns with Israel's enemies, while the right tends to be merely nationalist which doesn't scare Israelis much. As long as Jews are not actively persecuted in some other country, we don't much care how nationalistic it is, but active support for Palestinians is a direct danger to us.

Third, Hillary's promise to confront Russia struck a chord with us. She is not really likely to start a nuclear war with Russia. She is far more likely to push Russia into starting a bunch of proxy wars all around the world. A US vs Russia proxy war is pretty much our history throughout the 60s and 70s. We don't want to go back to that.

Fourth, when liberal leaders find that they've offended the Arabs too much, as they are always apt to do, they come up with the great idea of appeasing them by solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. To do that they send some senior State Department official to talk to both sides and come up with some magic formula that will solve this century-old conflict quickly and efficiently. This effort culminates in an international convention held in some pretty place (Camp David works well). But as it turns out, the great, new formula doesn't really work. The Palestinian leader would be murdered if he ever even hinted at accepting it, while the Israeli prime minister may escape with only losing his job. But the president wants results, so he or she pushes both sides. Eventually and inevitably the Palestinian premier accuses the US president of trying to steamroll him and leaves with anger. To celebrate, the Palestinians start a new cycle of violence. This has happened multiple times, including to Netanyahu in '96 and Barak in '00. Even now the French are trying to convene such a meeting. Maybe that will make the refugees in Calais happy. Israelis (both US-born and otherwise) prefer Trump because he's not likely to pull that.

I'm convinced that there isn't anything. If the laptop stuff was beyond classified emails that shouldn't have been on an unclassified server, the leak would need to be today. Or possible noon tomorrow at the latest I suppose, as the Bush DUI story did come out on the Friday before election day.

The good news is that most likely means there isn't a Trump tape out there either!

So, I predict nothing further comes out on either side. 4.5 days left. And of course, the media will talk this weekend about the race "tightening", but the map is too steep for Trump to overcome, blah, blah.

I'm just hoping the momentum moving toward Trump doesn't stall. He seems to be comfortably in the 264 zone. One more state with 6 votes is needed (maybe CO?). Or NH or NM and the 1 electoral vote out of ME CD2 would do it too...

scuttlebutt I'm hearing. take it with rock salt but their might be tidbits of truth sprinkled in there somewhere.

Israel government hates, hates, hates Obama. With a real passion borne of paranoia over wondering just how deep Obama's animosity runs against them. Their paranoia may be justified as Obama approaches the possibility of allowing the French resolution on Palestine to go forward without a veto. Something he could do after the election but before he leaves office. If Obama lets that go forward, this is not something President Trump can undo, the US will get veto'd over any attempt to roll back the resolution. Further, Hillary and current SoS Kerry are seen as carrying water for those PTB who want this resolution to go thru.

The foregoing is fairly well known. Scuttlebutt follows: The passage of that UN resolution represents an existential threat to the Israeli state from their point of view, hence it is something that the Israeli government absolutely, positively cannot allow to happen. Hence consider that they are big time players in the internal war going on behind the curtains in New York and DC. They don't want HRC to get elected; they think if Obama doesn't do it, she will.

Consider that the Mossad might have been the recipients of the leaked emails and in turn, they fed it to Wikileaks, that they were the ones who compromised Podesta's gmail account. They could easily have been the ones Seth Rich fed the DNC emails to before he was murdered. Consider that Wiener is Jewish and it was his laptop on which the 650k emails were found. He was certainly in one of the very best places to spy on Huma and in turn, HRC. Also if anyone knows anything about Microsoft Exchange protocols, one should know that Exchange security policies can be configured to prevent unauthorized connections to the Exchange server. So the question we haven't seen asked is how did Wiener's laptop get authorized to access the central mail database? Could Wiener be an agent of Mossad? To my puny mind, it's farfetched but it does have me wondering.

It should be clear to all that there is an internal war on in DC and New York; it's reflective of the split that's now occurring among the elites. Got the HRC faction furiously trying to tamp down the emails while the other side is furiously holding on long enough to get indictments.

One more: the focus is on the emails, but the real depth charges are inside the Clinton Foundation and the HRC faction is fighting very hard to keep everyone away from there. They apparently think they can survive the email scandals as long as they can protect the Foundation from sunlight.

Finally, Trumpslide is not a done deal. There are voting machines in 29 states IIRC. Who controls them may well control the outcome in favor of HRC.

Craziest election campaign in my lifetime ain't close to finished. Gonna lay in another week's supply of popcorn which I'll probably eat in the next three days...

Anonymous Die Fledermaus November 03, 2016 2:43 PM

Vox, I'm afraid you keep making the same mistake in that regard, and that is to see Israeli Jews and American Jews as largely the same nation. We are not, by almost every measure.

Do we have the same religion ? No. Most Israeli Jews, even the secular ones, are orthodox. Most American Jews are Reform or Conservative, which are basically 19th century german inventions.

Do we speak the same language ? No. Israeli Jews use Hebrew day to day. American Jews use English.

Do we have the same Genetics ? Very partly. The vast majority of American Jews are of Ashkenazi descent. While there are a lot of Ashkenazi Jews in Israel, the majority is Sepharadi or Ash/Sep mix.

Do we have the same politics ? Not really. Israel of course has the entire rainbow that you have from the ultra-racist right wingers who would rather see all Arabs nuked tomorrow, to the self-destructing leftists who would prefer seeing Israel lose its national purpose and be flooded with "refugees" from Sudan, but by enlarge we are a right-wing, nationalist nation. American Jews are pretty monolithic in their left wing liberalism.

Our nations are entwined, but our connections are weakening more and more every day. American Jewry is pretty much set on the Assimilation track. In 10 generations, it will no longer exist.

So.. about that "Israel American" vote - that should be a very mixed bag, some of which will be people of Israeli national identity that happen to have gotten a U.S citizenship by marriage or other means (like a U.S born child who was raised in Israel nontheless) or the other way around - an American Jew who has an Israeli citizenship by the force of the Law of Return. It can even be a christian American who has Israeli citizenship by marriage. I would not use those numbers to reflect on how American Jews vote.

If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that if every Jew in Israel would get a vote, you'd get about 70-80% Trump. But that the American Jew vote would be about 80-90% Hillary.

"If my vote (and those of my wife and parents) can tip WI to Trump, he's got them. I don't know if these dull wights are going to have the wherewithal to go for him in sufficient numbers, though. After all, this is the constituency of Paul Ryan."

Ryan is a tool. Given that, it's beyond me why he isn't with Trump

My model now has him winning all of those. It's strange that it has changed, because I'm just using 538's Swing The Election widget.

My original prediction assumed non-college-educated whites acquiring black turnout and latino partisanship -- perfectly reasonable -- then latinos bumping both up 10 points, and college-educated whites shifting a few points to the right. At the time, that would result in 50.1% and 352 electoral votes.

Now, even without college-educated whites moving at all, that results in 50.8% and 351 electoral votes -- including Oregon.

That's right. The Trumpslide is going to include Oregon.

I don't know how my own prediction shifted under me, because I'm leaving the moving parts to Nate Silver, but whatever. I like it.

What a waste of skin - supporting a pedophile just to have one chance to gloat over people who want to make the world a better place, to live vicariously as a "winner" on the coattails of a corrupt child molester.

However, the knowledge that stanish and all its kin will die alone and unloved as they always have done while I will be with my family is comfort enough whatever happens.

Sounds like you have a lot of personal experience in those areas.
