Vox Popoli: GamerGhazi can't cope

I'm sure many of you can relate to this, but since the double whammy of Brexit and Trump, I'm feeling extremely lost and upset and having some trouble coping with the new reality. I've been a long time lurker here and since this has always seemed like a supportive community, I thought I'd reach out for some advice.

I live in the stereotypical liberal bubble in a left-liberal city. I don't have any friends or family or work colleagues who would have supported Trump, so I have struggled to understand how this has happened, or how ideas that have been our shared values since WWII have been shed in favour of what appears to me to be a resurgence of ethno-nationalistic fascism. That's not to say I haven't read widely on the subject, and at least intellectually now I can at least explain what has happened without believing that America and Britain have both gone through a massive swing towards racism, nativism, misogyny and hate, although I still believe that is part of the answer.

I'm terrified for for the state of the world. I'm afraid that the US will end up like Putin's Russia, with 85% approval ratings, a watertight internal propaganda system and spiralling human rights abuses. I'm afraid that with America abandoning its (admittedly flawed in practice) ideals of spreading democracy and human rights across the world, that the sum total of human suffering will increase drastically. Already Trump is suspected to drop all talk of human rights from negotiations with China, limit support of NATO allies, as well as South Korea and Japan, and I'm terrified of a return to pre-20th century 'might makes right' international relations where the powerful will exploit and abuse the weak.

After the election I went to one of my favourite thinkers, Jonathon Haidt. This recent video of him inspired me to try to reach out to Trump supporters via Twitter and try to genuinely understand and empathise with them, and perhaps in turn have them empathise with me. After a couple of days of that I've all but given up, having repeatedly bashed my head against the brick wall of Infowars, international Jewish Globalist conspiracy, and a well that is now permanently poisoned against anything from the liberal intellectual tradition.

Now I'm more lost than ever. I've actually become ill from worry and feel like I'm now just compulsively online, trying to understand and explain and maybe find a light at the end of the tunnel. My question to you guys is: what are you doing to cope? Is there a place that people like us can go for mutual support? What's the best way to stop this awful feeling of powerlessness and loss?

Wouldn't it be TERRIBLE and THE WORST THING EVER if 85 percent of the American people approved of their leader? These morons don't even listen to themselves, so why on Earth would they think we will?

This hapless individual has quite clearly learned nothing from "one of his favorite thinkers". He still thinks that if only he lectures the Alt-Right on a liberal intellectual tradition that we know better than he does, we'll come around to what can't rightly be called his way of thinking. Say, rather, his way of parroting left-liberal dogma.

We know the liberal intellectual tradition, both the genuine one and its subsequent substitution. We reject them both.

The "new reality" quite clearly is just "reality" as it has been for at least a couple of decades and the writer has been (by their own admission) completely insulated from it in a Metroluvvie bubble.

- They remind me very much of the remainers I butted heads with over Brexit. They were sold on an EU that didn't exist in reality. Just as reading the Koran will turn most neutral rational readers against Islam, reading the treaties the UK (& all other member states) signed with the EU should turn anyone into a Eurosceptic.

- I've yet to encounter a dedicated remainer who has read the treaties. And when I tell them about some of the clauses (such as the French & British UN Security Council votes being subject to the direction of the EU "High Representative"), they refuse to believe it or even see for themselves in the treaties.

Similar applies to completely justified fears of the overtly inimical globalist policies such as Agenda 21 and handing over control of internet DNS to the UN. The former being directly responsible for purposeful rationing of energy and water supplies in the West and the latter opening the floodgates for worldwide censorship. It's in the public domain, from the horses mouth yet the Metroluvvies prefer to believe in some kind of alternate reality.

As far the right to bear arms in America, I feel as though Conservatives have won this for all time (or at least as far as my imagination can take me). The facts on the ground are the amount of guns and ammunition in private hands is astronomical. There are maybe 100 million gun owners with an average of 4 guns each and the NRA motto is, 'from my cold dead hands.' Guns, properly cared for, can last almost indefinitely.

At least this person understands enough to state their problem accurately, so I disagree with @4 that they are "akin to sea anemones" since though foundering and whining, this type of individual has shown the ability to think and not just parrot. These are the kind of people we may be able to reason with, educate, and hopefully rescue from their failed ideology.

As a Christian, I hold out hope for everyone's redemption and conversion to the truth, though some are closer than others (such as this person), and I reject the temptation to back up the garbage truck to the landfill and pull the lever on half of America. Many of those can be redeemed.

For them, propaganda is the tool of choice.
You can't get 85% approval without propaganda because many more than 15% of the people don't understand reason. I would venture to guess that more than 15% of the people can't even determine whether their own circumstances have improved.

Even if this joker knew somebody who supported Trump, he would immediately frame them in a way that makes it impossible to understand them rationally.

It's even worse than he suspects, though. Trump has shown that not only is the mainstream media untrustworthy and dishonest, they're also completely unnecessary and ineffective. The media hasn't quite got a handle on this yet, but it's perhaps the biggest outcome of this election. There is no mainstream media. They aren't the soi disant gatekeepers of truth their J-school professors told them they were. Trump demonstrated how toothless and feeble they are in the modern Internet-connected world.

This is going to be an exciting four years.

Ya know, it's funny. I look German enough. Used to speak quite good German with an effectively perfect set of German accents. I'm one of a relatively few Americans who can blend in among Germans and not look like an American if I don't want to. I also like the hell out of Germans and Germany, enough to have taught myself the language when I was 12 and 13.

But once, while in the 101st, on Reforger 76, I went into a club in Nuremberg, not trying to hide my Americaness, and was asked to leave. In that moment, for a while, all affection for Germany and Germans was forgotten, and I wanted the city retroactively obliterated, nuked down to bedrock.

I rather feel that way, if I haven't already made it obvious enough, about the alt-white. Ultimately, we're just not compatible. I could never ally with them, not for any cause. And, right here, they've made it clear enough that we _must_ be enemies.

You can choose to be guarded by the Good Shepherd, attended by the Great Physician, and led into peace that passes all understanding if you turn to Jesus of Nazareth as savior. You have it backwards. Currently I can carry in 32 states with my Tennessee carry permit. Were I to travel to those cities for work, I would be disallowed to carry due to their 'special laws'. This is why I want national right to carry... so I can travel and appropriately defend myself in those hellholes without risking time in club fed.

We're the lead power in the largest military alliance on the planet. We're a full fifth of the world's GDP but only a twentieth of its population. That was my instinct too. I know it's harder to get things passed in 50 states, but most of them have by now. Even Illinois has concealed carry since 2013 (requires 16 hours of training), and it was one of the last complete holdouts. I'm wary of legislation at the national level that might very well be more restrictive than what some states already have.
