Populism vs Democracy

Nassim Taleb asks a question:

I am still looking for someone to give a rigorous explanation/explanation of difference between populism & democracy. Nothing yet.

My response:
  • Democracy: liberal-imposed structural limits on the will of the people.
  • Populism: when the will of the people exceeds those limits.
This applies to the real-world definitions of the concepts observed, not the dictionary definitions of the conceptual ideals, of course.

In other news, if you're in the mood to trigger cucks and SJWs and other heretics upset by the incipient Ascension of the God-Emperor to the Cherry Blossom Throne, CryptoFashion now has red TRUMPSL!DE shirts inspired by the recent Day-by-Day cartoon. They also have a new shirt for Europeans who want to Make Europe Great Again.

Back when I still payed attention, in the American political arena the term populist was used in reference to politicians who were good at appealing to crowds. By that definition both Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump would be the populist candidates this time around.

And democracy: you vote and by some formula somebody wins. Unless it is what is now called direct democracy where the population of voters vote directly on legislation.

Blogger Mr. Naron November 14, 2016 1:12 PM

Historically, populism has been the movement to regulate big business. The goals of the Populist Movement of the late 1800s were to gain government ownership of the railroads, telephone, and telegraph industries. Why? They assumed it would help the farmers. The farmers were "the people". The leaders of the movement, however, were not farmers. They were government clerks who ended up working for the railroads and banks.

I live in Canada and I've ordered a MAGA cap, purely to shitlord. Alas, after discussing it on other sites, I think it likely that Canada will be last to recover as the alt-Right tidal wave sweeps the west, but for now I'm doing my part.

Democracy is a system of governance. Populism is an ideological movement.

Anonymous Credo_In_Unum_Deum November 14, 2016 1:29 PM

Democracy: Majority rules.

Populism: Americans telling all "hyphenated Americans" to go to hell.

Blogger tublecane November 14, 2016 1:29 PM

@2-Not to regulate Big Business persay, but to capture economic power for the common man, or however you want to put it. I'd be at a loss as to describe the Free Silver movement, for instance, as "regulation" of the finance, though the intention was to displace the then ruling Money Power. But that's more of a meet the new boss thing than regulation.

Blogger tublecane November 14, 2016 1:40 PM

@2-There is a really good book by the way, called "The Triumph of Conservatism" (not necessarily the conservatism you're thinking of), about how Big Business won the age of reform over the simple farmers and their insane social schemes through the "progressive" movement (progressive meaning whatever the heck they want it to mean, bub). As usual, goodness and truth never had a chance, and that which we are told to think is about 180 degrees the other way.

But I don't like to think that the good guys lost. Bernie Sanders isn't a good thing just because he's opposed to a bad thing, which is Wall Street. When the banksters--who defended the gold standard for none but practical reasons--got their way they instituted exactly what the farmers wanted. Except controlled by them.

It's Democracy when the majority of the people vote *your* way. Self-government! Government by the People! Patriotism! Freedom! Liberty!
It is a wonderful thing.

It's Populism when the majority of the people don't vote *your* way. Fascism! Mob Rule! Racism/sexism/homophobia/rape culture/patriarchy/domesticviolence/KKK/nationalism/etc!
It is a horrible thing.

Blogger HanSolo November 14, 2016 1:52 PM

Another gem from Lena:

"But we kept going, thinking these were the dying moans of the dragon known as the patriarchy being stabbed again and again in the stomach. We believed that on November 9, they'd be licking their wounds while we celebrated. It is painful on a cellular level knowing those men got what they wanted, just as it's painful to know you are hated for daring to ask for what is yours. It's painful to know that white women, so unable to see the unity of female identity, so unable to look past their violent privilege, and so inoculated with hate for themselves, showed up to the polls for him, too. My voice was literally lost when I woke up, squeaky and raw, and I ached in the places that make me a woman, the places where I've been grabbed so carelessly, the places we are struggling to call our own."

Blogger Johnny November 14, 2016 1:53 PM

Political words get tied to political movements and have their common meaning or use change over time. Someone who says that the Untied States is a democracy is apt to get corrected by someone who says it is a republic or a representative democracy. Reasonable enough as far as it goes, but it implies that a democracy is something other then a representative democracy, which really is just a republic by another name. Meanwhile calling our republic a democracy is still commonplace usage, which is to point out that in common usage the words do not fit together well.

Socialism is another example. It used to mean government ownership, and now it is commonly used to describe what more sensibly should be called crony capitalism. Private ownership with substantial government control.

Racism used to mean people who were hostile to other races, and now it applies to anybody who even imagines that there might be genetic differences between different populations.

And anybody who isn't a globalist now is an isolationist, an absurd term when applied to the United States. Unlike, say, Imperial Japan, we have never attempted to be isolated.

And so on in the ongoing word hash for political reasons.

Populism is a disarmed, deluded, teary rabble swayed by the chosen demagogues of treasonous moneyed elites to riot tantrum when they don't get their way.

Democracy is well-armed freemen voting their rational self interest as a proxy for military combat.

Based on her descriptions (not sure they can be believe based on rule one) of him I can't even imagine such a creature exists. He has hitched himself to someone who is ugly both body and soul. There is literally nothing redeeming about her other than she presumably has some money (can't even count on that because she is likely to squander it). Add to this the fact that she is likely verbally abusing him about how "his kind" are evil and ruin everything.

Life must be absolutely horrible for him. I would have sympathy for him but he has willingly put himself into this position.

There's been a lot of commentary out in the MSM suggesting that Trump is in over his head, that he will be eaten alive both on the world stage and in Washington D.C. and he will be faced with deadlock and not be able to get anything done. I've even heard suggestions that he's is scared. All maybe just wishful thinking on the part of the pundits, but deep down, the pundits know, Washington D.C. knows, we know, and the world knows that Trump is not scared.

For the pundits, Washington D.C., and the world, for them, waking up on Wednesday morning to thd reality that Donald Trump was elected President of the United States was like if any of us woke up tomorrow, and learned that... well that Donald Trump was our boss.

There was a cold and broken "Oh, fuck" heard across the Universe.

Explain it to me.

Democracy-All the people vote and whoever gets there most votes wins. Democracy Good.

Populism-A majority of the people are excited about the man they are going to vite for before they vote for him, they vote for him and he wins a majority of the votes. Populism Bad.

Can someone explain? My head hurts.

I'm sure you'll miss the irony of what was being said about Trump before the election and how it relates to Clinton now.

"What happens if Trump wins the popular vote and Clinton wins the Electoral College? Well, legally speaking, Clinton would most likely win. You can bet, though, that Trump would protest if this happened. However, of course, according to the U.S. Constitution, the President is not chosen by a nation-wide popular vote but is determined by the electoral college."

Clinton outpolled Trump by about 3.5 million votes in CA and NY.

Trump outpolled Clinton by about 3 million votes in the other 48 states.

So ya think CA and NY should run the country and the other 48 states have no say?

Have to say the Founding Fathers anticipated this sort of thing and understood that relying solely on the popular vote was a recipe for tyranny of the majority concentrated in small areas and provided a way for less populated states to act somewhat as equalizers.

People don’t seem to understand this: you need to adapt and change and look outside of your tiny enclaves not out of some moral obligation, but because you are losing on every imaginable front. You don’t have to get in touch with the rest of the country because that’s the right thing to do. You have to get in touch with the rest of the country because they’re kicking your ass. The Republicans will control the House, the Senate, and the presidency, have the chance to appoint at least one and probably several Supreme Court justices, run 68 out of 99 state legislative houses, and hold 31 gubernatorial seats. That is domination on an unimaginable level. Every minute you spend signal-boosting people who say that it’s Republicans who have to get on board with liberal values is a minute you’re not doing anything to change that condition.

Prediction: Lefty culture will not change. SJWs always double down.

All of the west coast states are like that. Bernardino, a 34-year-old Honduran who declined to give his last name, was looking for a "coyote" to help him slip into the United States near the border city of Tijuana when he abandoned his plan. So did 18-year-old Samuel, a Salvadoran.

Both men said they feared that if they are caught, their family members living north of the border might suffer.

"Imagine if they stop me, after a while my family living over there would have problems. The truth I never imagined is that the blond man might win," Samuel said at Padre Chava's breakfast hall, a soup kitchen in downtown Tijuana that provides food and clothing for more than 1,000 immigrants every day.

Inland is converging rapidly. The Inland Empire is mostly blue now. The Bay Area stank stretched all the way to Sacramento.

There's just not much left to save.

The case that made me realize that the welfare state was compelling me to be a cuckold was a woman who was 41 and had spontaneously aborted (miscarried) her eighth child; the other seven had three different last names and two had the same first name.

Look very closely I have seen 2 niglets with the same first /last name with only 1 letter difference in large first names in the ER at the same time. They were both extended versions of Tayshauntte

Well, we'll see. Rahm might get a surprise next year.

This probably won't happen but it wouldn't be that hard to try anyone working toward sanctuary cities with Conspiracy to commit human trafficking and if they are profiting, seize most of their assets

if you feel really splashy it requires only one or two cases of terrorist groups benefiting to charge them with aiding terrorism

If anyone dies, its a capital crime even.

SJW-converged PepsiCo daring us to burn them down:

I pretty much abandoned brand name products around the time they began falling over themselves to support buttsex marriage. I could never understand why companies engaged in social justice virtue-signaling in the first place. It makes any company that does it look cheap - like they regard their activism as nothing more than a chintzy marketing tool meant to fool the rubes, like a mobster who works at a soup kitchen to make the community think he's a nice guy. (But secretly behind the scenes, he's working to screw them all over.)

I agree that the Progressives took the wind out of populism's sails. Except, there was a lot of overlap. Many of the progressives were the old populists, WJB being a prime example. And the progressives did the populists one better than free silver with the Federal Reserve.

The farmers simply wanted inflation. They were debtors and wanted their debts to get smaller and prices to soar. That's why so many of them were imperialists and warmongers. The Spanish-American War was their glory days economically if their swan song politically. They signed up for it without hesitation because war is the farmer's best friend.

The progressives accomplished just about every goal the populists had except government ownership of major industries. The graduated income tax, the Australian ballot, the referendum, recall and initiative, and the direct election of senators were all populist goals, and the progressives accomplished all of them.

They're fixation on railroads would morph into the political capitalism you speak of in the progressive era. Call it regulated capitalism or political entrepreneurship, either way it's a uniquely American version of planning. And planning may start off as something the people want, but it rarely ever turns out the way they expect.

@103. Open Carry

the overall white vote he won is similar to Romney's (58% for Trump versus 59% for Romney - source).

Given these numbers, it may be premature to declare the birth of the new voting block

It looks like Trump won the election on good old-fashioned bread-and-butter issues. Jobs, jobs, jobs. That's how he won the Rust Belt states, and the election. Trump represents a significant shift to the left in American politics. Moderate centre-left politics combined with nationalism. That is always going to be a winning combination. I'd vote for it.

The neocons might well move to the Democrats en masse, shifting the Democrats even further right. That would be fantastic. They'd then have to really double down on the identity politics nonsense to disguise their move to the right. That would give the Republicans a complete lock on traditional Democrat voters in flyover states. Hopefully the cucks will jump ship to the Democrats as well.

You'd then have the Democrats as the extreme right globalist party and the potential for the Republicans to be the populist mildly left nationalist party. The Republicans could then remain in government practically indefinitely.

Pepsi has been converged for years. Its Pakistani Muslim CEO is blatantly anti-American/anti-Western. A friend's husband works there and the social justice shit they put them through is appalling. He's forced to support various campaigns, and spend loads of free time, unremunerated of course, to work on various social causes (the most "conservative" of them is for the veterans; all others are global/gays/womyn). If any of the Ilk ever have a job opening in IT in the DFW area, let me know - I'd love to help him get out of that swamp.

But they won't, for two reasons: first, they are just as converged. You might remember a few years back, when Obama announced he would not defend DOMA, the House Republicans retained a law firm to do the job. It happened to be a firm that had a rather large book of business with KO, and KO threatened the firm with being discharged for taking the business.

The second reason is that anybody with half a brain knows these periodic threats against soda makers by politicians have everything to do with the knowledge that regular and heavy consumption of their products is positive correlated with Diabetes. SJW convergence buys the politicians' silence.
