The blessings of deportation

As usual, the media fails to draw the correct logical conclusion:
Donald Trump's German grandfather begged the prince of Bavaria not to deport him from Germany in the early 20th century,  a newly uncovered letter has revealed.  Friedrich Trump, who built up a fortune through restaurants and boarding houses after arriving in America as an immigrant, was born in the Bavarian town of Kallstadt.

But according to German newspaper Bild, he decided to return to his hometown in 1901 along with his wife, Elisabeth Christ, only to be issued with a deportation notice a few years later. It is understood the notice was issued after the German authorities discovered he had never carried out military service before emigrating to America.

He was therefore banned from reclaiming his citizenship, local historian Roland Paul told Bild.

"The American citizen and pensioner Friedrich Trump, currently residing in Kallstadt, is hereby informed that he is to depart the state of Bavaria, or face deportation," the notice states.

Mr Trump's grandfather even resorted to pleading with the prince of Bavaria not to deport him, Bild revealed, in an emotionally-charged letter. He begged the "well-loved, noble, wise and just" monarch to make an exception and block the deportation order in the note, but a court would later deny the request. The Trump family was then forced to abandon Germany for good and move back to America in 1905, when Elisabeth was pregnant with the US president-elect's father, Fred Trump.

The emergence of the letter has raised eyebrows in some quarters due to Mr Trump's hardline stance on immigration.
Just think. If the USA fails to repatriate millions of immigrants, it may be robbing Mexico, El Salvador, or even Nigeria of a future national leader. We can't take that risk! If even one nation is deprived of a future president, that is too many!

What makes it even more ironic is that Trump very well might be a huge factor in uncucking Germany, what with the waves he is making across Europe's nationalist movements.

Well yes, immigration to the West is basically novo-colonialism. In the past, colonialism was about stealing the resources of the rest of the world. However, with the shift from industrial to service economies, the most important resource is people, so now we steal their talent. Therefore, immigrrrrrration from the developing world is basically intellectual theft in order to keep them bereft of their "best and brightest." It's just another way the man is keeping the rest of the world down. Anyone who truly cares about equality should reject allowing the Western nations to steal the best people from the developing world, so that the developing world can innovate on their own merits and become competitive with the West.

Anonymous Down and Out in... November 21, 2016 6:03 PM

Importing the best and brightest is also severely dysgenic to the native population by removing and undermining the inducements to excel within the native society. If I am an American student, why would I go into massive debt to learn computer science, with the full knowledge that the job which was once awaiting me inevitably go to a cheaper H1B? If we're really going to operate the nation on that sort of basis, we may as well admit that the whole country would be cheaper to do in Pakistan, and move America there. What will be here instead of America? Why, Pakistan, of course.

Then when it turns out America is cheaper to do in America now that America is really Pakistan, we can move America from Pakistan back to Pakistan (formerly America.) The Somalis will have their heads spinning, they won't know which America to send their bogus asylum claims to. But it's a trick question, Somalis: there IS no America left any more, so just stay home. We'll mail you your asylum grant from Pakistan, and you won't have to go anywhere.

In 1901, the Kingdom of Bavaria was part of the greater German Empire, it was not a sovereign nation, though it did have some peculiar concessions that the other German States did not receive (apparently including banishing people). Though the article says he was banished/deported from Germany, the actual quotations only banish him from Bavaria, which had its own army curiously enough. He was still a German and was not banished from the nation - he just couldn't live in Bavaria. It would be like The Donald being banished from California. Sucks, but there's still lots of other parts of the country open to him. Kind of weak.

Grandpa Trump considered himself Bavarian, not a "German", which at the time was a recently developed concept. Even in USA history, considering yourself an American first rather than a Virginian or Texan first is very new (post WWII).

Before the automobile and the highway system, your culture was very local. He didn't want to be a "German", he wanted to be a Bavarian. Even today, Bavarians consider themselves separate, perhaps even more so than Texans do.

Between Two Worlds: Dynamics and Integration of Western and Chinese Values in Hong Kong
By Chi-yue Chiu, Ho-Ying Fu
2001Working Paper No. 1683

The present research investigated how host and foreign cultures impacted on multiply enculturated individuals, specifically on how they integrate values from foreign cultures. We argued that whether foreign values are integrated into an individual's host cultural meaning system depends on the compatibility of the values with implicit beliefs in the host culture. Hence some parts of a foreign culture are more likely to be embraced than others. Specifically with regard to Western achievement versus moral values, we contend that because Western achievement values are relatively more compatible with implicit beliefs in Hong Kong society, they are more cognitively accessible than Western moral values. We investigated the cognitive accessibility of cultural values to contemporary Hong Kong students by measuring the associations triggered by role models. Study 1 found that Chinese moral values were relatively more accessible than other values when Chinese role models were presented whereas competence values were more accessible than other values when Western role models were presented. In studies 2 to 5, participants generated examples of role models; the Chinese role models generated tended to exemplify Chinese moral values best whereas Western role model generated tended to exemplify Western competence values better than Western moral values. This implied that impact of Chinese culture on contemporary Hong Kong students occurs mainly in moral domain, whereas that of Western culture was mainly in competence domain. Implication for the dynamic use of values from different cultures by bicultural individuals is discussed.

Sounds like they can incorporate the legal system but not the value system, and politics is downstream from culture. Having worked with Chinese, this presents a good synopsis of what I experienced.

Chinese will not be American, but they will be quite happy to participate in any system that offers a material reward.

Selective assimilation. Does that sound ((familiar))?

True. I'm from Wisconsin. If I were banished from here, I would move to Upper Michigan - very similar people, outlook, politics, etc. If you were banished from Texas, you'd leave the country before moving to Oklahoma? Or New Mexico? I guess it is a personal choice, but the difference between being banned from a state and a nation is significant enough to me that I would remain in the nation. In Trump's case, I guess his second-deepest roots were in the US, so he chose to move back.

Anonymous Mr. Rational November 22, 2016 3:25 PM

Trump would still have been pretty much at home.  In 1905, there were still substantial non-Amish communities in Pennsylvania which spoke German.  It wasn't until WWI that there was really any choice to be made between being culturally German and being American, and they chose American.

I should know.  Both sides of my family made that choice.
