The rubes are onto us!

The New York Times is trying to figure out how to avoid getting FoxNewsed by the Alt-Media:
The last year has turned the United States into a country of information addicts who compulsively check the television, the smartphone and the good old-fashioned newspaper with a burning question: What fresh twist could our national election drama and its executive producer, Donald J. Trump, possibly have in store for us now?

No doubt about it: Campaign 2016 has been a smash hit.

And to the news media have gone the spoils. With Mr. Trump providing must-see TV theatrics, cable news has drawn record audiences. Newspapers have reached online readership highs that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago.

On Wednesday comes the reckoning.

The election news bubble that’s about to pop has blocked from plain view the expanding financial sinkhole at the center of the paper-and-ink branch of the news industry, which has recently seen a print advertising plunge that was “much more precipitous, to be honest with you, than anybody expected a year or so ago,” as The Wall Street Journal editor in chief Gerard Baker told me on Friday.

Papers including The Journal, The New York Times, The Guardian, the Gannett publications and others have responded with plans to reorganize, shed staff, kill off whole sections, or all of the above.

Taken together, it means another rapid depletion in the nation’s ranks of traditionally trained journalists whose main mission is to root out corruption, hold the powerful accountable and sort fact from fiction for voters.

It couldn’t be happening at a worse moment in American public life. The internet-borne forces that are eating away at print advertising are enabling a host of faux-journalistic players to pollute the democracy with dangerously fake news items.

In the last couple of weeks, Facebook, Twitter and other social media outlets have exposed millions of Americans to false stories asserting that: the Clinton campaign’s pollster, Joel Benenson, wrote a secret memo detailing plans to “salvage” Hillary Clinton’s candidacy by launching a radiological attack to halt voting (merrily shared on Twitter by Roger Stone, an informal adviser to the Trump campaign); the Clinton campaign senior strategist John Podesta practiced an occult ritual involving various bodily fluids; Mrs. Clinton is paying public pollsters to skew results (shared on Twitter by Donald Trump Jr.); there is a trail of supposedly suspicious deaths of myriad Clinton foes (which The Times’s Frank Bruni heard repeated in a hotel lobby in Ohio).

As Mike Cernovich, a Twitter star, alt-right news provocateur and promoter of Clinton health conspiracies, boasted in last week’s New Yorker, “Someone like me is perceived as the new Fourth Estate.” His content can live alongside that of The Times or The Boston Globe or The Washington Post on the Facebook newsfeed and be just as well read, if not more so. On Saturday he called on a President Trump to disband the White House press corps.

He may not have to. All you have to do is look at the effect of the Gannett cuts on its Washington staff, which Politico recently likened to a “blood bath.”
So, they're going to win by cutting back on staff and lying about the competition. That sounds like a strategy for certain success!

The total ineptitude of the conservative movement can really only be understood by the ease with which the Alt-Right is competing with them despite a complete imbalance of resources, numbers, and awareness. But conservatives were always too interested in dialectic and making nice to ever have any hope of beating the mainstream media at its own game.

Can you imagine how the Alt-Right would have handled the Lewinsky scandal? Instead of huffing indignantly about "the dignity of the office" and attacking Republicans who also had affairs, there would have been a positive torrent of horrifically pornographic memes starring Bill Clinton. I'll go so far as to suggest that if the Alt-Right had been around then, Bill Clinton would have been forced to resign.

Speaking of the Alt-Right and Mike Cernovich, EveryJoe has the most substantive review of Mike's MAGA Mindset that I've seen yet:
Back in mid-October, the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency was considered outlandish by the mainstream media. Virtually every major polling organization had predicted that Hillary Clinton would emerge victorious in nothing short of a landslide of epic proportions, condemning Trump’s campaign to a fate as an embarrassing political footnote.

Also in mid-October, author Mike Cernovich and editor Vox Day published the audaciously-titled MAGA Mindset: Making YOU and America Great Again. A book that alternates between political prognostication and self-help reaffirmation, MAGA Mindset confidently describes the rumbling sociocultural landscape that helped form the framework for Trump’s eventual victory.

One does not need to read tea leaves to predict how such a bold move could have spelled disaster for Cernovich’s career; while he had already established himself as a powerful social media bellwether for the New Right movement, authoring a pro-Trump manifesto on the eve of his defeat would forever arm his mainstream media nemeses with concrete evidence of Cernovich’s analytical myopia.

It is this intrepidness on behalf of Cernovich and Day – the MAGA mindset, as it were – that imbues the book’s premise with an indelible potency.

In a self-effacing origin story of sorts, Cernovich calls himself a “dumb hick from flyover country” who “should not have amounted to much.” Now, though, he has become famous (or infamous, depending on whom you ask) as the founder of website Danger & Play and as an outspoken Twitter user who coined hashtags #HillarysHealth, #HidingHillary, et al. With 166,000 followers and counting, Cernovich estimates that his account receives over 100 million impressions monthly.
The juxtaposition of these two mentions of Cernovich illustrate the fundamental problem the mainstream media is facing. They have to cover him. He's too big to ignore. But they can't resist the urge to attack, marginalize, and belittle, thereby completely missing everything about why people are paying attention to him in the first place.

Consider how many stories they've done about Hillary Clinton's unexpected defeat and why the pollsters got it wrong. And yet, even when they begrudingly mentioned an individual who was predicting the precise opposite of everything they expected at the time, they only portrayed him as "promoter of Clinton health conspiracies", not someone who had been predicting a Trump victory since 2015.

That is why they are destined to be the irrelevant news, until they finally disappear altogether. They either don't know, or simply don't care, what people are actually interested in reading about. Worse, they act as if we can't tell what they're doing. Notice how Cernovich "boasts" when he is simply telling a reporter the facts, whereas when John Scalzi blatantly lied to a New York Times reporter about his site traffic, he was "affable" and "comfortable with the business of promotion" and "adept at generating buzz."

Do they really think we don't notice?

What's the purpose of all the multiple staffs anyway? Every single MSM outlet runs the exact same stories in the same way using the same language. You could cut back all but three or four talking heads, half a dozen staffers and a couple of producers and run every single network and newspaper in the country without altering their output in the least.

It's not even like they fact check anymore. Hillary's ill health wasn't a conspiracy, it was PNEUMONIA. A twitter guy in the middle of nowhere could spot what people sleeping on her own aircraft couldn't suss out and they are still in denial.

What purpose do they serve?

At the time of the Lewinsky affair, in certain newsgroups there was a flood of pornographic pics of both Bill and Hillary. We just lacked the social media apparatus for spreading them widely.

The New York Times is doomed by its own provincialism. All major urban media outlets tend to ignore anything outside of their local bubble, but New York media is particularly prone to it.

There ARE some outlets, notably in advertising, that are waking up to the fact that they have completely lost touch with the customer base. It reminds me of the Jim Zumbo affair back in the early '00s...he was a writer for one of the hunting magazines who cranked out an article on how nobody really needed an AR. Whereupon a third of the subscribers canceled, and another third were threatening to do so. Zumbo became radioactive...and the entire firearm industry realized that the customer base had shifted away from the 1950-vintage hunt-and-fish model they were using.

Huh? I canceled my print subscription years ago. What about the internet?

"cable news has drawn record audiences. Newspapers have reached online readership highs"

Oh there it is. So they do know about it but do even they realize how it works?

"pollute the democracy with dangerously fake news"

Sound intriguing. Tell me more. I'll just go ahead and search on

"Clinton campaign senior strategist John Podesta practiced an occult ritual involving various bodily fluids"

"there is a trail of supposedly suspicious deaths of myriad Clinton foes"

"Mike Cernovich, a Twitter star, alt-right news provocateur and promoter of Clinton health conspiracies, boasted in last week’s New Yorker"

Whoa, better check this one out. I'll need some new chatter for the next cocktail party.

The media have fallen into the trap of reporting what the powerful people want them to say because it's easier and more profitable. Powerful people being happy = easy, reliable information sources in government. Powerful people being happy = major corporate advertisers not being upset that media orgs they advertise with are working against their efforts to build relationships with politicians through lobbying.

I rolled my eyes so hard at that sentence that I think I sprained a muscle.
But seriously --
I am baffled by two things: (1) how could they actually believe that they are rooting out corruption (eg Clintons), holding the powerful accountable (eg Clinton, Soros, ad nauseum), and sorting out fact from fiction? (2) Many people believe the media's statement about this, and most (if not all) of them probably vote Democratic.

The most fun I have had recently was over at fivethirtyeight. Someone wrote an article about Hillary being so confident of victory she was going to Missouri to try and help the downticket races, to which I replied Bullshit, Hillary cares for no one but Hillary, if she is going to Missouri it is because her internal polling shows she is going to need those electoral votes. The pile on among commenters was hilarious a week later...so I went back and posted about how dumb they were so they could remember.

Someone I know in the industry who'd already thought I was prescient regarding best picture predictions on movies I'd never seen (looking at the trailers and the nature of SJW-talk surrounding the movie I made my bets based on teh current popular SJW talking points) asked why I had been so certain that Spotlight would win the Oscars.

I told them that every movie nominated checked off a number of liberal talking points, but Spotlight attacked the Catholic church, got to harp on priests as kiddie diddlers, AND gave the press, and by extension, liberals, a chance to pat themselves on the back about the myth that the modern press is speaking and uncovering truth in the face of power and intimidation. They could pretend they were brave.

Same person, who had previously told me it was not an attack, also had to grudgingly admit, given the comments made onstage, that it was.

Any bets on how long before this movie goes down the memory hole with the left because it paints pedophiles as bad?

Blogger Valtandor Nought November 21, 2016 1:00 PM

Equally unsurprising is that like dependents in every trend past its sell-by date, each new thing that happens is a complete surprise.

The basic question is "do you want to look stupid or smart?" Evidently the NY Times wants to look stupid.

Personally, I've created a bit of a monster. My (mostly right wing) friends now think I'm a political genius because in advance of the election I told them exactly why the polls were wrong and that Trump would win easily due to working class voters.

The truth is that all I did was to stick my head out of the MSM echo chamber bubble and listen to what everyone else had to say. Then I went with the explanation that seemed to be the most consistent.

Honestly, in the face of wildly attended Trump rallies, big cross-over votes in the primaries, repeated statements by voters that they would vote for Trump even if the media showed him murdering a baby on 7th Avenue, etc., these idiots were predicting huge Obama-style Democratic turnout and adjusted their polls accordingly.

Anonymous Tipsy November 21, 2016 1:12 PM

@28 The frustrating thing about the MSM reporting on the crisis in the church was it's complete and purposeful inability to distinguish that the main issue was ephebophilia, not pedophilia, on the part of the flood of gay priests that it let in during the 60s and 70s. The blowback from any suggestion that homosexuality was the root of the problem was astonishing, coming both from the hierarchy and the bien pensants in the laity.

Also, it's interesting that the rate of abuse in public schools is much higher, but seldom reported. More evidence of Cultural Marxism's war on Christianity.

First, the 'fake news' sites do exist. This bogus story made the rounds. Looking at the site, it doesn't appear a hoax right away nor does it have any ''this site is parody or satire'' disclaimer anywhere. IIRC before the election someone posted a link to another fake site that appeared to be a newspaper's website. Later commenters ID'd it as bogus.
Who and why they are being done I speculate that it may be Google and faceberg employees goofing around on their lunch break to 'seed' blogs and sites like WND with hoaxes in an attempt to discredit them.
Newspapers are dying, Craigslist and Ebay have slaughtered the Classifieds (which used to be a profit center for papers) and the Mon. - Thurs. of metro papers keep getting thinner and thinner. I suspect within 10 years at least some metros are simply going to stop doing print editions those days.
They're going the way of wired telephones and recording tape.

Twitter is sinking fast and unless some fool picks them up at a firesale and can bleed a few billion to keep the virtue signal lit, Gab (and more) will pick up the slack

Same with Fakebook - The electors have been receiving threats, Trump assassination threats, but they don't shut down the accounts, and it is becoming obvious even to the blind.

There are some more balanced outlets, Unz, Truthout, but they aren't well known.

Now the talking heads are calling on Trump to divest himself before becoming President. None mentioned "Clinton Cash" during the campaign. The 11 year old tape with Bush gets 23 minutes, Wikileaks 3 and they tell you not to pay attention to it.

Except for a very rare thought I wish to direct I don't use Twitter, so my memes would only be on Gab, but I have to resist the attempts to shoot in such a target rich environment as the dying media.

Yep, circling the drain. One fine example is McClatchy who owns Vox's Minneapolis Red Star Tribune, and my own KC Star. In 2005 their stock was at an all time high of $748, today it's $14.

The KC Star has been laying off staff for several years. When I was a kid, I went on a tour of the Star, which at the time had a morning and evening edition. I got to tour the paper warehouse too. Now the paper warehouse is closed and is being turned into condos. About 10 years ago they built a huge new printing building covered in green glass so you could see the giant printing presses inside, but business is so bad that they now rent the press out to run other smaller papers in the region besides the main edition.

Death can't come soon enough for the lying print media.

I used to tutor economics back in college, the intro courses in micro and macro. All 5 students I tutored were J-majors. I was absolutely astonished at their ignorance--as in, how could these possibly be college students? One girl could not grasp how to divide by 0.1 even after I explained it to her for no less than 10 minutes. I couldn't even get her to memorize the simple trick of how to do it, much less understand the why of it. And this was a junior in college in 1995.

Mix that level of stupidity with the smug pseudo-intellectualism, and its no wonder that journalists are less trusted than bankers and lawyers.

Here is a question. Does President Trump need a White House Press Corps?

The White House press corps is an anachronism.  It's is really just a throw back to the days Franklyn Roosevelt.  Admittedly that press corps had manners and knew it's damn place.  The President treated them like the pigs that they were.  He fed them scraps and kept individual pigs in suspense as to whether or not they would be going to the slaughterhouse.
Now the pig thinks it is the equal or better of the swineherd and feels quite entitled to tell him how good he is at...well not just pig keeping, the modern press sow thinks it's an expert on everything.
Mister President Elect...Throw the pigs out.
When newspapers were the only game in town they were needful.  You had to use the press to get your word out.  Your word would be filtered, augmented and criticized but it would more or less get out there.

Now it won't in any serious way.

Your word will be spun, folded and mutilated which means it is all pointless.

@23 Tim Buck Too - You need to note the key word you used, "believe." It's an article of faith for them, a mantra they repeat without understanding or reflection. They simply define anything they do or say as supporting that mission, regardless of actual effect or subject. There is only belief, no thinking involved. That is why it's baffling to a logical person: it's random feelz-pablum. Secondly, confirmation-bias is real. People tend to believe things that support their current world-view, especially if it confirms their belief that they are good people doing good things. The hate I get when I point out any of the many fundamental logical conflicts between different leftie positions is staggering. People get very defensive and hostile when a line of rhetoric rips their self-image and world-view apart.

Blogger Cail Corishev November 21, 2016 1:47 PM

On those "false stories," I don't know about the first one, but none of the others have been shown to be false. At worst, they were rhetorical exaggeration.

There have been a string of suspicious deaths linked to the Clintons. We called them Arkancides in 1992. That doesn't prove the Clintons had anything to do with them, but they do exist, so that's not false.

If John Podesta didn't attend any occult rituals, it's only because he was otherwise occupied on the nights he was invited to them, because we've seen the invitations and the pictures of what the woman who offers the rituals does.

It's a fact that they paid pollsters to skew results. It's also a fact that campaigns always do that to get favorable numbers to use for marketing purposes, but that doesn't make it a false story.

Continuing to lie even as they say they're going to do better isn't a good way to start.

When the lügenpresse uses terms like "fact from fiction", "fake news", or "truth", it is from the shifting sands of a subjective value system. That in turn is bent towards their manichean political agenda, in which everything they want is good and anything their opposition wants is beyond the pale.

The crux of the matter, and the associated yawning abyss of their irrelevance and ultimate demise, is that the vast bulk of the country still maintains some Christianity-based semblance of objective morality, and can either immediately see through or smell the lies served up by the press. They do this? News to me.

I dropped out of a journalism program in the mid-90s due to the slimy depths I was expected to extend in "reporting" (i.e. editorializing) any given story.

Most J-school programs are populated by women, surprise! surprise! Many of the students there, male or female, think they'll become the next Woodward and Bernstein of modern journalism, instead of the PR hacks their eventual descent dictates.

Even that is a lie. Woodward and Bernstein only made their bones because the president was a Republican. The fact they are still around in the media and speaking their opinions has tarnished any supposed integrity they had. The Clintons have repeatedly committed more serious abuses of power than Watergate and both of those journalists are some of the first people to come out and defend them and say "there is nothing to see here".

This is what they're supposed to do. Have they actually done it? Watergate was 40 years ago. The success of the '72 Dolphins doesn't carry much weight for the opinion on the team taking the field last Sunday either.

They're selling fiction as fact and corruption as virtue. Small wonder the public doesn't trust them anymore and look toward a guy like Cernovich, who calls it like he sees it and has been right far more often than he's been wrong.

Blogger Boko Harambe November 21, 2016 2:11 PM

@59, you explicate my point. W&B are held up as some sort of gods but only because they "took down" a Republican.

When I was growing up I'd heard about Watergate but never learned the particulars until after high school. I sorta shrugged and wondered what the big deal was, considering the other abuses a president or any other arm of the government could and had perpetuate. Theatre is what came to mind, some guilt-parade of a figurehead to make a larger point as to the supposed evil of the greater group he represented.

W&B wouldn't have even been famous if it wasn't for insider info, anyway. They got lucky, or were the chosen mouthpieces to be fed info.

I'm not convinced any journalist can merely report. They are only human and susceptible to whim like any other. My local astronomical/meteorological society is better at reporting because they post bulletins of facts like meteor sightings and weather events. Add a human dimension, though, and it becomes a story rather than a mere list of occurrences. Report facts, be accused of robot behavior and inhumanity.

News media have only themselves to blame. They push a horrid product. All talk of media bias is long over, thanks to WikiLeaks the only question is the degree of outright collusion.

Now, having deservedly lost the trust of the public through their gross dereliction of duty to truth and fact, the lefty media does what? They whip out their favorite tool of shaming and derision, trying to hector us back away from the "Fake News" and back onto the reservation where they control the narrative.

It isn't going to happen. They only way they are going to regain trust is to earn it back. They are going to have to put out a better product and slowly over time earn the trust they've squandered back. It won't be won in a fortnight, either. It will take years. Trust is not something you get back easily, if ever.

As per the discussion above, I'm now completely intolerant of anyone talking about racism, racists, or anything else. Hate is a first amendment right (and we need free association), but even the ardent white nationalists (and thepoliticalcesspool.com with James Edwards is a good source for reason on the alt-white and has been for a decade).

I welcome reason and evidence, but if evidence implies something inconvenient, reasoning out epicycles to find some hidden, non-obvious cause will be called out.

If there is someone unreasonable on the alt-WHITE I have not found such a person, though I know they exist and haven't looked hard for someone who won't talk civilly. Detroit isn't the way it is because the KKK is forcing them to be the 3rd world. Chicago isn't worse now than under Capone because of the KKK. The few members of the actual KKK are laughable, and there are at least three orders of magnitude more leftists that are even worse as reverse-racists.

I'll even go worse. Most on the alt-White are some form of genteel southerner Christians and are respectful and civil to everyone and hate violence and property crime. They aren't even the main meme factory.

I cannot have a discussion with the crybullies of the left. They should trade the Diaper pins for pacifiers and keep them in.

The one thing among many that I love about the candidacy and election of Donald J. Trump is the total and public unmasking of the main stream media [which includes Faux News] and the "establishment" of both political parties.
This unmasking has enabled many people, who had not in prior election cycles paid as much attention for whatever reason, to see and understand the extent to which the "fake news" media have irreparably damaged their credibility.
Personally, I avoid the fake news media like the plague!

Prior to being proven, from whence did this theoretical construct emerge? It emerged from multiple people making similar observations regarding multiple events. This is how science works.
