Writing sundries

So, here is the bad news, the good news, and a few other things.
  1. There is no way I'm going to complete A SEA OF SKULLS, get it edited, and get it out before Christmas. It's just not happening. Even if I downed tools on everyone else's books, ignored Infogalactic, and only did one blog post a day, it would be cutting it close. And I'm not going to do any of those things.
  2. However, as someone observed that a) what I already have written is on the order of four times longer than other novels we publish, b) it's arguably better than ATOB, and c) people have been waiting a long time for it, I was inspired to concoct a plan that I thought might be of interest to Selenoth fans.
You may recall George Martin won the 1997 Hugo Award for Best Novella for "Blood of the Dragon", which was actually the Danerys chapters from A GAME OF THRONES. You may also note that Amazon permits the updating of ebook files.

So, I said to our Production Editor, what if we release a version of A SEA OF SKULLS that is somewhere between 100k and 120k words, sell it for a reduced price of $5.99, then update the file in the spring to the full 295k-word version and let everyone update the file, after which we'll raise the price to the full $7.99 we intend to charge for the whole book? That will give all the early readers a discount as well as the chance to return to Selenoth before the end of the year, even if the full experience of Book Two will have to wait. He said, "I would go for that." So, we decided to see what you think of the idea.

Anyhow, I'm sorry to disappoint you all in this regard, but it is an option. If you think it's a good idea, let us know in the comments. If you think it's a stupid idea, please feel free do the same. Regardless, I will promise that the full version a) will be finished and b) no one who buys the initial version will have to pay any more to get the rest of it. I'm not Scalzi and Castalia House is not Tor; I'm not going to divide it into 10 30k parts, sell them all for a dollar, then package them together and resell the whole thing to you again. If you buy the initial version, you'll get the whole thing. Eventually.

However, I do have some good news regarding Selenoth. First, we have an audiobook in the works. The English narrator is warming up on the smaller books, but he does intend to tackle both A THRONE OF BONES and A SEA OF SKULLS in 2017. Second, both hardcover and paperback versions of A THRONE OF BONES will be available in time for Christmas. They'll be monsters, running around 915 pages, case laminate for the hardcover, and slightly taller than the Marcher Lord editions. We'll also be using Garamond for the font.

In other news, I'm happy to say that my next non-fiction book will be about the Alt-Right and it will be out before summer. I'm working with a co-writer whom I will not presently identify, but let's just say it is going to be every bit as hard-hitting and relevant and accurate as SJWAL and Cuckservative.

And finally, I can promise a new John C. Wright novel before Christmas, possibly even before the end of this month. This is Book Three of Moth & Cobweb.

You may now proceed with your best Vox RR Day jokes....

Minor quibble: do you mean the Adobe version of Garamond (the kind used for the Harry Potter books) or the Windoze version of Garamond? Because the latter Garamond is very hard on the eyes.

The contrast with "Rape Rape's" open contempt for his fans and laziness is striking - and (I mean no disrespect by thinking this) probably deliberate and smart marketing/fan relations ;).

Didn't know about ebook's being "updated" on Amazon. It actually creates an interesting opportunity for author-fan interaction not just as demonstrated here but also in terms of publishing early drafts and looking for feedback.

How would it be any different than how you guys dole out the Moth and Cobweb books? I finally get over my temporary and strange aversion to fiction and find something I can devour over my first vacation in over a decade and it runs out on me before my son is done with his turn driving. Made me go back to non-fiction for a few days.

But The Missionaries brought me back. Then the second Moth and Cobweb book came out. I finished it before my eyes blinked once.

At any rate, I'm an unforgivable addict of Castalia House fiction now, so you can do whatever.

From one nontraditional publisher to another, I can attest that this is a solid plan. I did something similar for the 2nd edition of Nethereal, and the response was almost universally positive.

This is why Castalia House will eat Tor alive. You're absolutely right that those NY dinosaurs stuck in the analog mire wouldn't even have considered something like this.

Don't read short fiction either, but I tried "Opera Vita Aeterna" and found it one of the best stories I've read in a long time; it has a special place in my heart. And I'm still annoyed at how it was treated by those who consider themselves In Charge of Fandom these days. That story truly deserved a Hugo – if the latter still meant what it did when I was a fan 50 years ago.

I would not go for this plan, because of my personality type. I have a very small cognitive reservoir for to-dos and find them taxing. Even knowing that I would see the notice here when the update was ready, I can't afford the cognitive cost of having that in the back of my mind for as long as it would take you to finish the book.

It's one of the major differences between project people, such as all the INTJs here, and process people. I do best in jobs where every day is a new day, and there is nothing to weigh on the back of my mind outside of work; this is balanced by a high tolerance for tedious, repetitive tasks, since I just hyperfocus and trance.

The readership here is skewed heavily to personality types that would find my objection incomprehensible, but the general population is more balanced.

I am your servant, gentlemen. But my publisher is a Dark Lord, and has asked me to concentrate on finishing the next installment of MOTH AND COBWEB before returning to Ilya the Barbarian.

EXILES OF CHAOS has some notes and chapters written, but I will move it upward on the schedule. I am very happy you like my Children of Chaos.

Blogger Michael Maier November 17, 2016 12:23 AM

Just take your time, do it once and do it right and sell me the HC.

Blogger Alexandros November 17, 2016 12:30 AM

It will look bad if you do it in two passes. While I would be very happy to have even a quarter of it early, the optics look bad to new potential readers I think. If our opinion is the only one that matters, then please release the completed parts early!

Anonymous daddynichol November 17, 2016 12:31 AM

I'm in for the early release.

Blogger rho November 17, 2016 12:49 AM

Whoa now, pay 3/4 of the price for 1/3 of the content? Do you also dip a stick in a bucket of AIDS before you beat your fans with it?

Seriously, it sounds like a decent idea to me. I'm not the target market (I'm out of fucks to give regarding fantasy franchises), but I've traded more for less in promissory notes for things I do like.

On a positive note, it appears that the DNC-affiliated pedophilia crisis has been solved to everybody's satisfaction.

Anonymous Jack Amok November 17, 2016 12:50 AM

I'd prefer two drops of 100k words each. Waiting too long between releases makes it hard to remember what the hell was going on in the last book.

@126 -Eh? What? Source or summary? I've just assumed it's on hold until the new prez is on the job, and a new AG can get it on with the FBI. If it all goes "poof" with nary an execution, long prison sentence, or suicide, or even a "suicide," I'll be sorely disappointed.

Blogger wreckage November 17, 2016 12:59 AM

@122 Loved Somewhither. It felt like it didn't get bogged down trying to fit concepts seamlessly, yet so much of it worked perfectly.

I haven't read any Vox R.R. Day, I assume both R's stand for Rape, that being the most important element in any fantasy epic these days?

That... was a joke. Sort of. Until it wasn't.

Yes, I would buy ASOS under these conditions. I'd even pay full price up front, as I have holiday traveling ahead of me, and actually having something decent to read in the airports will vastly improve the journey.

Anonymous Wyrd November 17, 2016 2:02 AM

You will hear no such jokes from me. I am having enough trouble finishing CITY OF CORPSES and NOWHITHER. You have my sympathy.

Stopping World War Three, aiding the Trumpocalypse, and prying the claws of the Wiki-SJWs and Twitter-SJWs off the levers of power and the bullhorns of public dialog takes time too, after all ....

Mr. Wright quips about not turning in deadlines while he spends his time constantly shooting the Alt-Right in the back (latest edition):

http://www.scifiwright.com/2016/11/a-correction/

Mr. Wright's problem is the cognitive dissonance of correlating Catholicism with anti-Christian Enlightenment. His mendacity of attributing Alt-White as the totality of the Alt-Right while ignoring the Alt-West confirms this.

I'll still buy Moth and Cobweb book, however. This series is my fav of his works.

Please do not believe the press, even if you saw, or thought you saw, Donald Trump say something on 60 Minutes.

The press lies. It is their job. One way to lie is to edit out any qualifications or clarifications a speaker makes. Another way is to edit and retape the question, to make it look like the speaker is talking about something else.

I am not saying 60 Minutes did that in this case. These are merely examples.

Their mission in life is to start the rumors to dispirit and dishearten Trump supporters, to erode his public image, and to spread doubt.

Wait and see.

If it is any comfort, I am giving up politics for advent. I saw how badly this was eating into my time.

Be that as it may, I extend the olive branch. I would far prefer to set aside difference and concentrate on the common foe, who have, as Vox Day with Delphic accuracy predicted, doubled down again. Every news story you will see in the mainstream press from now on will be an anti-Donald Trump hit piece.

"Nobody watches 60 Minutes. If they did, Trump wouldn't be President. Catch up."

As I said, it was just an example.

But the mainstream media is, despite these election results, still in command of the air, and still swings the general opinion, even if no one watches it any more.

If no one watched that spot where this brand-new, false narrative of Wobbly Trump is coming from, then no Nervous Nellies would be worried about whether or not Trump will go wobbly, when he has, so far, had time to do nothing of consequence. He appointed two men to posts, met with Obama, and went to dinner.

The press is now conducting a full court press against Stephen K. Bannon.

They are doing what they always do: issuing a tacit command to a politician, and waiting for the politician to obey. The behavior is not meant to produce information, nor even to spread propaganda. It is too obvious for that.

I sincerely doubt Trump will obey. I hope he breaks the spine of the beast called the news.

Don't exult in your victory too soon. There's still enough MSM momentum left that they could regroup and present a more formidable opponent than they did this election cycle, and they weren't complete chumps. Nobody you know watches 60 Minutes, but clearly people do, or these ridiculous Trump-Hitler stories wouldn't have any more currency than worries about chem-trails.

@139 Snidely Whiplash: I'm coming up in the world: Ilk, Deplorable and now this. Cool.

The link was to a photo on a Facebook page: a huge Saxon knife with "Throne of Bones" laser-engraved on the blade resting on a display stand. I think Vox ought to license a line of product tie-ins - giant knife for Throne, maybe a hand axe for Sea, you get the idea. I know Vox is swamped and he said on a prior thread that he's not taking on more projects. But why should he? Somebody out there must have some creative ability. I'm not that person so the idea is going nowhere unless one of you picks it up and runs with it. Log into Facebook, search for Joe Doakes 35, scroll down to see the sample, let your imagination run wild.

Blogger Panzerdude November 17, 2016 11:38 AM

Great out of the box thinking. Answer: It depends on the final release date.

Plan on rereading ATOB in prep for ASOS. So, if the final release is too far in the future, then the early release doesn't really fill in the time. I'll still have to delay starting in order to anticipate the full release, otherwise, I'm done with the early release and still waiting.

Therefore, if you anticipate the final release to be a few weeks into 2017, then go for it. If the final release is after mid-Feb, then please wait.

OpenID lostsailor32 November 17, 2016 12:40 PM

Might buy now but likely wouldn't read until the complete version came out. Hey, gives me time to re-read ATOB to prepare for the ASOS experience. But also don't mind paying full price for the finished product as it helps support Castalia House...

Anonymous Post Alley Crackpot November 17, 2016 12:46 PM

"So, we decided to see what you think of the idea ..."

I'm surprised more publishers aren't offering this option for established writers, but I understand the logistics reasons for why this rarely happens.

You have the advantage of being part of the publisher's logistics and operations as well as being a writer for the publisher.

Why not take further advantage of the advantages?

Blogger Basil Makedon November 17, 2016 3:20 PM

We will be printing ALL of our books, sooner or later.

I'm working on ATOB now, and I'll do Summa as soon as I can fit it into the schedule.

Blogger S. Misanthrope November 18, 2016 1:08 AM

1. I'm not inclined to read part of a book and then re-read those parts in order to get at the whole book, so while I would most likely buy the proposed partial Sea of Skulls, I wouldn't read it until it was upgraded to the full version. Cash-flow-wise, maybe that's a good deal for both sides.

2. Physical copies of AToB- thanks for making my holiday shopping a little easier!
