A THRONE OF BONES is back

In Selenoth, the race of Man is on the ascendant. The ancient dragons sleep. The ghastly Witchkings are no more; their evil power destroyed by the courage of Men and the fearsome magic of the Elves. The Dwarves have retreated to the kingdoms of the Underdeep, the trolls hide in their mountains, and even the savage orc tribes have learned to dread the iron discipline of Amorr's mighty legions. But after four hundred years of mutual suspicion, the rivalry between two of the Houses Martial that rule the Amorran Senate threatens to turn violent, and unrest sparks rebellion throughout the imperial provinces.

In the north, the barbarian reavers who have long plagued the coasts of the White Sea unexpectedly plead for the royal protection of the King of Savondir, as they flee a vicious race of wolf-demons who have invaded their islands. And in the distant east, the war drums echo throughout the mountains as orcs and goblins gather in vast numbers, summoned by their bestial gods.

Epic fantasy at its deepest and most gripping. Military fiction at its most fantastic. A THRONE OF BONES is Book I in the ARTS OF DARK AND LIGHT series. Available in both paperback and case-bound hardcover.

Thanks to Matt, Robert, Markku, and Kirk, who somehow managed to find the time to get this out before next week's release of the early edition of Book II, and in between all of the other new releases to boot. Although the text is the same, it has had another round of deep proofreading and is a completely revamped print edition. Despite being Royal Octavo and larger than the Marcher Lord hardcover, it clocks in at 922 pages.

Oh man. I'm excited about this! Now to scrounge up 35 bucks...

before next week's release of the early edition of Book II

!!!

Even an inlet or lagoon of skulls is a Merry Christmas indeed.

Out of curiosity, did you revise (being discreet to avoid spoilers) a logistical issue that you had mentioned as an error in the original edition, having to do with the time necessary to accomplish a particular engineering feat?

Blogger pdwalker December 08, 2016 10:04 AM

that's a book that deserves a printed edition.

Blogger Legion of Logic December 08, 2016 10:04 AM

I'm a huge fantasy fan. How would this series compare to, say, the Malazan series, if anyone has read it? I love the mix of military and fantasy.

Anonymous 5343 Kinds of Deplorable December 08, 2016 10:16 AM

Now, see, I've already got the hardcover ... but a "completely redone print edition", and casebound? You've got me thinking ...

Anonymous Rather, Not December 08, 2016 10:30 AM

Markuu, question about Amazon kindle payments to content providers, I understand they pay by the page...do they only pay once for a given person/account to read the book? What if someone read it several times (flipping the pages) does the authoer/publisher get paid a second time per page? Taking that to an extreme hypothetical if a minion were to open their kindle unlimited version of ATOB and push play on the kindle audio reader (which flips pages as they go) before they left for work everyday and left it plugged in and playing in the house while they weren't there...would amazon give VD and CH the per page payment every day?

Anonymous VFM #6306 December 08, 2016 10:52 AM

Legion of Logic, it compares favorably to Malazan, with better military aspects and more dynamic characters. Narrower in time scope, at least for now. We're talking years of turmoil and social conflict, not centuries. Great day-to-day military, not just combat.

Also, some spatial mathematics that are downright...magical in velocity.

Already did in the Kindle edition, to make it just BARELY plausible. This isn't revised, it's just cleaned up.

Yes. No.

Looking forward to getting my hands on this. Any chance of a Summa Elvetica hardcover sometime soon?

Anonymous deplorable book December 08, 2016 11:55 AM

VD,
Even if someone follows you for politics, there are two things that are hard to stomach about you:

1. Your truly atrocious writing

2. Your ego

You are smart enough to know you are a god awful writer. You have even mentioned it. Why continue to torture your fans with this garbage? I suspect it is not just for money.

Anonymous VDefense December 08, 2016 12:01 PM

@13

wtf, dude?

VD might occasionally exaggerate his IQ once in a while, but his writing is not that bad.

It is fantasy, it is not supposed to be literary fiction.

Actually, I'm a pretty good writer. Better than average. You're not only wrong, you're demonstrating that you can't even comprehend what I write about my writing.

Extremely high. January, most likely.

Blogger JRH, esq. December 08, 2016 12:39 PM

FYI: Most of my fiction consumption is audiobooks. I'd love to have the opportunity to use my Audible credits on CH books.

Blogger S. Misanthrope December 08, 2016 12:59 PM

Story, plot and characters are great. I loved this book and I am one who will abandon books if they don't hold my interest.

VD, this volume appears to be in a different size than the original hardcover??

next week's release of the early edition of Book II

Finally

Blogger Josh (the gayest thing here) December 08, 2016 1:03 PM

Is deplorable book the latest incarnation of Andrew Marston?

Anonymous Sheiko29 December 08, 2016 1:11 PM

@Deplorable Book,

I am as averse to VDs politics as I am to his position on heavy squats, but the books are really very fun. I did slightly prefer Summa Elevetica to Throne of Bones, but really enjoyed both. The short story about the evil wizard was great too. Name escapes me.

Anonymous Matthew Hopkins December 08, 2016 1:12 PM

Hi where can I get hold of the early release? Huge fan - also may review (although may instead preview and wait to the final release for a full review).

Blogger VD December 08, 2016 1:20 PM

Yes, it's bigger. Royal octavo.

If Vox wishes to torture his Ilk, we are his to do with as he wishes. Besides, you're SO wrong about his writing!

I have been reading the Kindle version, and I have to agree, you are a pretty good writer. I have enjoyed it so far -- about two-thirds of the way through. I hope it is not an insult to say I been pleasantly surprised.

Not at all. There are few things more relaxing than low expectations.

Frankly, I found ATOB pretty impressive. Good characters, good plot, plausible setting.

Plus the first useable description of Roman naming conventions I've ever seen...were I teaching a class on Roman history, I'd borrow it.

Blogger Aeoli Pera December 08, 2016 3:04 PM

It reads pretty quick for 900+ pages.

Blogger Polynices December 08, 2016 3:33 PM

"deplorable book" is a fool. Throne of Bones was an amazing, delightful read. Worst thing about it was that it ended and I couldn't read more. Worst thing about Vox (by far!) is that he hasn't put the rest of his life on hold to write five or ten sequels.

Blogger Mr. B.A.D. December 08, 2016 4:13 PM

I'm buying the early release. But dammit Vox, if I have to wait a year for the rest of the book, God help you. I know the Kurgan. I'll get him to come stare at you.

Blogger cheddarman December 08, 2016 4:59 PM

I know the secret to Vox writing about Elves. He has Elven blood himself. See the interview from a couple of days ago with Stefan Molyneaux if you don't believe me. In the video, Vox clearly has pointy ears.

We know they are not Vulcan fake ears, because that would be totally gay.

The ears are another reason why Scalzi hates him. Vox would get mistaken for a real Vulcan at a Star Trek convention.

And he publishes books by John Wright about Elves, who also have pointy ears.

Blogger Peter P December 08, 2016 5:05 PM

Will this show up on book depository as well? Or should i just go for Amazon?

Anonymous vales3 December 08, 2016 5:31 PM

I have the original hardcover but another won't hurt. Ordered. I look forward to the sequel.

I own the Hinterlands HC as well. One of the features of these new editions is a less, er, elvish typeface for the text. We also increased the line height (or leading, or \baselineskip, or whatever you want to call it). Hence the increased page count.

The text is now much easier on the eye.

Blogger Michael West December 08, 2016 6:16 PM

@15 Awesome! And we're talking about the expanded edition with all the other short Selenoth stories, right? AToB hardcover ordered already, too.

It should, but I'd go for Amazon if you're concerned about Christmas.

I do. It's particularly noticeable when my head is shaved clean.

Blogger Matthew December 08, 2016 8:32 PM

But can Vox blush?

Blogger cheddarman December 08, 2016 11:33 PM

Vox,

You have badass pointy ears.

I thought the ears were an artifact of an inexpensive digital camera, as they seem to round out when you turn sideways.

Stephan's camera makes the lower half of his head look slightly wider than the top half of his head.

Blogger Michael Maier December 09, 2016 12:21 AM

Vox..... DUDE!

You're REALLY putting out a different edition to make us loony types buy ANOTHER COPY in HC?

You know elves would secretly exchange children at night, leaving the "cuckolded" parents to rear the changeling. This is a new strategy, using these changelings to start changing the world into something the elves can live in, hence the Alt-Right. Vox is not the Evil Lord of Evil without reason.

You have just exposed the biggest conspiracy of all in this world. Remember, the reason the VFM is faceless, is to hide the pointy ears, else it gives the game away.

Vile Greeting.
Deplorable Anonymoer.

Blogger wreckage December 09, 2016 3:32 AM

One of my ears is pointy. Strange but true.

Does this get me in on the conspiracy to hoodwink the humans and steal their most attractive women?

Anonymous RabidRatel December 09, 2016 4:49 AM

Only halfway, it would seem.

I didn't put out the other edition. Marcher Lord did. This one is done the Castalia House way. That's like wondering why our version of THE WAR IN HEAVEN isn't the same as Pocket's mass market paperback edition.

Anonymous Baseball Savant December 09, 2016 7:26 AM

VD,

Thanks for doing this.

Blogger Lana J December 09, 2016 10:53 AM

Great news! I gave my copy to my son and regretted it immediately. The change in font is welcome. I can't wait to re-read it before the short story/sneak peak comes out.

Anyone who says you are a bad writer clearly has acquired a taste for dreadful, SJW schlock.
