Merry Christmas!

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
- John 1:1-5

This is the true hope and promise of Christmas. The light shines, even in the darkness that engulfs the world today, and the darkness will not overcome it.

Whether you are surrounded with love and family and decorations and presents, or whether you find yourself in a motel surrounded by nothing more festive than a wi-fi connection and few empty cans of beer, you are not alone today. You are part of the great celebration of the miracle, the great golden net of believers that reaches all the way around the world and binds the Church together.

Because at its heart, Christmas is not about togetherness or silver bells or snow. It is about the Word becoming flesh and coming to dwell among us, the spark that lit the fire in the hearts of men that will never be extinguished.

Merry Christmas, everyone.

"This is the true hope and promise of Christmas. The light shines, even in the darkness that engulfs the world today, and the darkness will not overcome it." I hope they upload the homily from Mass last night. The priest started off by commenting how the morals at Christ's birth weren't too different from today. He mentioned the IS's persecution and their threats against churches in the U.S. He concluded with Christ wants to work through the door but we have the key. Merry Christmas all from Parkersburg, WV!

5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

I am so glad that he, the eternal existing one, came to redeem us. I am also so thankful that he opened my heart so that I might believe on him. John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name

If Christ had arrived with trumpets and lain in a cradle of gold, his birth would have been a splendid affair. But it would not be a comfort to me. He was rather to lie in the lap of a poor maiden and be thought of little significance in the eyes of the world. Now I can come to him. Now he reveals himself to the miserable in order not to give any impression that he arrives with great power, splendor, wisdom, and aristocratic manners. But upon his return on that Day, when he will oppose the high and the mighty, it will be different. Now he comes to the poor, who need a Savior, but then he will come as a Judge against those who are persecuting him now. (Luther, 1530).

A more poetic and therefore more beautiful translation than "the darkness has not overcome it" is King James' "the darkness comprehended

We have three services on Christmas Eve. The latest is 7 pm, and usually has the largest group of visitors. At least half of the 150 that worshiped at our late service were unknown to me.

During the service I noticed a gentleman sitting in the back. When he came up to communion, I could smell whiskey on his breath. He received the bread and wine, and crossed himself. At the end of the service we light candles, and sing Silent Night - the first verse in German. I noticed that the man was kneeling during the song (we don't have kneelers, so he 'stood' out).

After the service I greeted the congregants and noticed him standing back, waiting to speak to me alone after everybody left. After the last person wished me a Merry Christmas I walked over to him and extended my hand. He shook it, not looking into my eyes and asked if he could keep the candle.

I said of course, and then he shared with me that he was driving through town, and saw the hope sign in front of the church, and decided to go to church for the first time in ten years. He shared that his son committed suicide eight years ago, on Christmas Day...his wife left him after this.

My sermon was fine I'm sure, the music was festive and the liturgy sound. The people were cheerful and welcoming, and he was fed by the body and blood of Christ. For him however it was the light...he shared that he would keep this candle forever, and take it out when he needed a reminder of God's love for him. You don't have to be a gifted preacher, teacher or doer of good...just shine Christ's light.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

I hope you dreadful ilk have a wonderful Christmas, and may your light repel the darkness that threatens to overtake us.

@23 "My husband of 24 years is almost a year now into a mid-life crisis"

Please PLEASE! Go spend some time with Michele Weiner-Davis's book "Divorce Busters" (and her second book, similar name, can't pull it up at the moment, coffee hasn't kicked in...) -- and since you probably can't get her book today (book stores closed, right?) go read her forum. Michele's wisdom and long experience as a counselor SAVED both my heart-and-mind and my marriage! (Michele is very firmly committed to saving marriages: they can be, and not by grimly white-knuckling it but by fixing it and creating a new one with the 'old' spouse. MOST people are not happier after divorce.) (And yes, Michele says, it takes ONE to tango; you don't need him to "work with you" to fix it. Her advice kept me sane in an insane time!)

Right now doesn't feel merry, but maybe it CAN! I used to say I wanted his affair to be the thing that changed and SAVED our marriage. Hard, agonizing, terrible time -- sending you SUCH sympathy! -- but it did! (I also described myself as Persephone, following him as far into HELL as I could without becoming too 'damaged,' and hoping to come out of the experience with the seeds of a new spring in my hands. And I did!)

3 weeks earlier, God allowed us to find each other on the (gasp) internet. We have now been married almost 10 years, and today we are having a very inexpensive, but joyful Christmas together.

In John 1, the Word (logos) made flesh does not come into the passage until verse 14. Who is the light? He is the logos to the bride--the same as the "dabar" to the prophets. The living Word. Messiah cannot have direct contact with His bride, as that would be a direct violation of His Father's wedding traditions. That's why the Holy Spirit was sent to be the Word (logos) to the bride.

Oh, and Dec. 25 is the birthday celebration of numerous gods--but, the Messiah was born on the Feast of Tabernacles (late September/early October each year). The Father recognized only His ordained day, not the pagan Roman Catholic atrocity called Christ-mass, which is what it means to take His name in vain (attach Him to what is false/idolatrous).

The "dumped" among us can probably all agree that divorces stink. That said, today is a day of hope; put your faith in the Lord, whose birth we celebrate today. God doesn't spare us pain, but through the Holy Spirit does give us strength to bear it, and through the Son gives us forgiveness of our own sins.

Merry Christmas, Supreme Dark Lord, family of the DL, and all Ilk!

I've always loved the fact that John uses for "comprehend" a word that can mean either "understand with the mind" or "conquer in battle." Both meanings are true in the war between the darkness and the light. No matter what the Light does, the Darkness will never understand what it is doing. It may imitate, it may mock, but it will never comprehend. At the same time, we know that though the Darkness spreads and engulfs the world, the Light still shines and will overcome. Light pushes back the darkness. Darkness never pushes back light.

And pity them- the grass not being greener on the other side.

I watched the first season of Showtime's The Affair recently. While there is nothing remotely Christian about it (sex and language are omnipresent), if anything could disabuse starry-eyed romantics of the notion that pursuing desire at the expense of one's vows is a recipe for long-term happiness, this would be the ticket. It is unrelentingly grim and punishing. I can't recall a single likable, remotely noble character.

In short, yeah, the grass is never greener. But the devil is quite the con artist.

God's best blessings to everyone on the day we celebrate the birthday of Emmanuel, God with us, Jesus of the Cross and the Blood of our redemption! Born perfect and without blemish and wrapped in the swaddling clothes of the sacrificial Lamb of God, my hope eternal! Hallelujah! Amen!
