So put him in charge!

I think he should have accepted it, mostly because Trump will end up firing a neocon who doesn't abide by his policies as directed within months, if not weeks:
Representative Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) was offered the Deputy Secretary of State position by President-elect Donald J. Trump’s transition team, but declined because he “could not support a Secretary of State that didn’t have Trump’s policies”, according to a source with intimate knowledge of the process.

The source told GotNews that Rohrabacher, who was being considered for the Secretary of State post, refused to serve under a Secretary who did not align with Donald Trump’s foreign policy views.

Rohrabacher, an “outspoken Trump enthusiast” and long-serving member of the House called “Putin’s favorite congressman” for his pro-peace views, stands out among the other potential picks for head of the State Department, such as Trump-hating failed presidential candidate Mitt Romney, gun-grabbing classified info leaker David Petraeus, and neoconservative warmonger John Bolton.

The Deputy Secretary of State position is currently filled by Obama’s Tony Blinken, who was appointed in 2015. The Deputy Secretary of State is the chief assistant to the Secretary and replaces them as Acting Secretary in the case of death or other emergency.

Rohrabacher evidently chose not to take his chances and risk serving under a conventional establishment Secretary of State with pro-war, anti-Trump foreign policy views, such as Mitt Romney, John Bolton, or David Petraeus.

Rudy Giuliani, another contender for the post, was exclusively revealed by GotNews to have failed his own vetting process, likely due to his recent foreign lobbying. Giuliani is no longer in the race.
Then again, perhaps Trump will just give him the top spot.

I'd say that is what he's angling for by refusing the post.

Wouldn't be too surprised if offering Deputy SoS wasn't a test.

Trump seems to keep showing up the folks that keep underestimating his intelligence.

If this man is such a rabid Trump supporter then, maybe he should hold the top spot. I like the idea of him far more than any of the others trying out. Besides, the Donald is not known for staying over long with someone that can't cut it.

Doubtful. Rohrabacher is a bit too fond of his home state's medicinal herb.

This. Either Rooby-Roo is playing games or he honestly doesn't trust Trump's judgment, either case disqualifies him IMO.

It seems to me that Rex Tillerson would give him somebody who knows all the ins and outs of the energy game. From what I have read about the guy, he might not be too bad a pick.

Trump does indeed test his contenders, and DR may have blown it big time. If you cannot take on the task he assigns you to first, then you disqualify yourself right out of the gate.

Beta bait. He didn't take it.

Anonymous FitzRobert December 03, 2016 6:57 PM

Bravo Zulu, Rohrabacher. Maybe this will serve as a wake up call for Trump, assuming he's genuinely considering one of those three assholes.

That's integrity, Rudy Giuliani stopped and frisked himself.

If it ends up being Romney or Bolton I will just assume a shadow government is still very much in charge, at least until Trump proves otherwise.

Heh. I love how this allows all the other candidates to save face when Trump chooses Rohrabacher for the top spot: "I was just too independent-minded." I can't even imagine how many unspoken mutual understandings went into that brilliant relationship management.

Or is that perception just confirmation bias?

OT, funny video of a Trump supporter in CA getting harassed by SJWs over his shirt:

What is needed is what should be called either "Coulter's Triumvirate" or the "Paleocon Dream Team": Sessions-AG; Kobach-DHS; Rohrabacher-SoS

Rohrabacher is...not well informed...I was in Azerbaijan when he paid a visit. He was not up to speed on the most basic issues and said things that came off as unhinged.

His instincts are good but he did a lousy job of understanding the dynamics of the place despite our best efforts to give him a clear picture of what was going on. Now...maybe...he was just coming to check things out for himself, which I've got to have some idea of what is happening before you start making policy recommendations from outer space...which is essentially what he did.

The host government thought he was nuts because his recommendations had nothing to do with reality...not just diplomatic niceties. I'm fine with someone who is a bull in a china shop but know what the hell you're talking about.

That's not Rohrabacher, at least not on foreign policy.

Our own Nate needs to be Secretary of State. Being Nate, he would wear two ivory handled six shooters

The Washington Examiner (Paul Bedard) reported at 4:49pm that Rohrabacher is very much under consideration for SOS. The story also claims (as VD notes) that Rohrabacher turned down the deputy slot. Interestingly, it notes that he did so in relation to Romney being the top dog. If true, this says much about both Trump and Rohrabacher.

First, as to Rohrabacher, it says we owe this Congressman another debt of appreciation. He’s been an America Firster during the long decades of neocon/neoliberal betrayal. And now, whether out of selflessness or self interest, he has spared us a globalist, Israel Firster as SOS.

As to Trump, the lesson is that we need to keep the pressure on. If these reports are true, Trump was ready to saddle us with a handsome traitor as SOS and throw a bone to his base by having an actual patriot as the defanged deputy.

Rohrabacher would be so excellent a choice, it almost speaks volumes that he wasn’t considered right from the start. And what is Trump up to that he would even consider Romney? It’s not about Romney’s personal attacks against Trump, it’s about Romney’s belligerent Israel First policies. He practically promised a war against Iran in his Presidential campaign. He would never work for normalization with Putin unless Tel Aviv wanted it. Romney’s a globalist who thinks America is way to make money.

If Trump wants to show how magnanimous he is in victory, he should consider patriotic people he once attacked rather than traitors who once attacked him. Pat Buchanan has a wealth of knowledge and experience, and his foreign policy views perfectly align with Trump’s campaign promises. But in 2000, Trump attacked Buchanan in much the same way that Romney attacked Trump in 2016.

Buchanan seems to be the bigger man as he steadfastly supported Trump’s campaign because Buchanan truly believes in America First. If Trump wants to prove that he supports American interests more than his vanity, he should bury the hatchet with patriots he dislikes rather than cozy up to globalists who dislike him.

Apparently Bannon and Thiel have been instrumental in pushing Rohrabacher for Secretary of State in the past few days. If he is chosen, that's a good sign that Trump really is listening to Bannon on the most important decisions.

On an unrelated note, I watched a video of Bannon speaking to some tea party group back in 2011. Bannon is acutely aware of the problems with Wall Street and the need for major financial reform.

To think, in 50 days, Obama/Jarrett is going to be replaced by Trump/Bannon...

Why would he be offered the assistant job? And why publicly? From his InfoGalactic bio, he looks like a great choice as the secretary.

See, that's what I'm sayin': to me it looks like a way to give the other candidates an out for their egos when they aren't chosen. Beyond professional, very kind.

In an interview Nigel Farage advised Trump to pick a SoS that would respect those that voted for Trump, help repair the party and was correct on the issues of Libya and Iraq.

Of the main candidates, Rohrabacher best fits those criteria.

I also came across

from Jan 2016

"The rise of ISIS and continued violence in Syria and Iraq has created a refugee migration crisis that is affecting many of our European partners. In partial response to the instability in Iraq and Syria, Rep. Rohrabacher recently introduced H.R. 4017, the Save Christians from Genocide Act. The resolution recognizes that Christians and Yazidis in Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Iran, and Libya are targets of genocide and, as such, they should be given first priority among refugee and immigration applications.

One of Rep. Rohrabacher’s main goals as chairman of the EE&ET Subcommittee has been to improve relations between the U.S. and Russia."

I wondered if I had missed something - so I do a little searchin on Gab and Chuck Johnson likes Rohrabacher, too.

For the topper, Vox likes Rohrabacher, too. It's always nice to get independent confirmation that one has correctly analyzed & interpreted the data.

PS. Vox, thanks for the blog entry

Kobach for DHS would be an absolute masterstroke.

John Bolton may be a mongerer of war, but at least he is nationalistic enough to enrage the rest of the Globalists. And he has a pretty good track record on international 2nd Amendment issues. I think he may be the "bad cop" that Trump needs to balance out his foreign policy apparatus.

It dangerous to judge on little evidence, but his reaction to the Taiwan phone call ( indicates he has a good understanding of matters.

A principled decision by Rohrabacher. I hope Trump takes note.
