This is what Zero Fucks looks like

John Scalzi ‏@scalzi
Pro tip: if you write me telling me you're tired of me writing about politics, expect a response along the line of "I don't fucking care."

John Scalzi ‏@scalzi
Pointed out to me a certain racist failure is still desperately trying to prove he's more popular than I am. Well, with assholes, certainly.

James S.A. Corey ‏@JamesSACorey
How come you get all the cool enemies?

John Scalzi ‏@scalzi
Well, if by "cool" you mean "sad little bigoted manchildren, wailing disconsolately at the indifference of others": just luck.

Edward Trimnell ‏@EdwardTrimnell
John Scalzi, studiously ignoring Vox Day. Lol.

MAGA Thermite ‏@SirThermite
It's telling how Gamma 0 isn't content anymore with calling @voxday a racist, has to lie about him being a failure

Just a reminder that John Scalzi is so successful, and cares so little about what other people think, that he told Lightspeed Magazine in 2010 that Whatever was getting more than 2 million pageviews per month when it was actually getting 409,745. As it is written, SJWs always lie. The first funny thing - and I would have spotted this if I'd been paying attention at the time - is that later that year, he reported 5,131,194 pageviews for the entire year. Be it lying, political analysis, or writing science fiction, he is a mediocrity.

It's true that McRapey gives zero fucks, but about the truth, not about what you think of him. He cares very much indeed about that. And if you're here reading this, you are probably already aware that John Scalzi says you're an asshole. See: Third Law of SJW.

Speaking of the Laws of SJW, the second funny thing is that McRapey is still trying to preserve his narrative about my being a failure when Castalia House now sells more books than he does and November's VP-only traffic was 3,446,312 pageviews, which happens to be 3.3 times more than Whatever's very best month ever back in May 2012. Scalzi has been in decline ever since, as his site traffic and Google Trends and flat number of Twitter followers all demonstrate.

I'm not trying to prove I'm more popular than he is. I am conclusively proving it, using the very metric that he dishonestly used to create a false media narrative of his own popularity. Far from being desperate, I am distinctly amused at his complete inability to admit the observable reality; Gamma pride is truly a thing to behold. And once his attempt to rip off Isaac Asimov fails to take him to the next level, again, it's back to the coal mines of the midlist for poor McRapey. His readers know the truth, of course, even as they rush to smooth his ruffled feathers.

Fledgist ‏@Fledgist
What matters is not the roar of the world but the love of your family & the affection of your friends. You've got that in spades.

Or, you know, maybe not.

John Scalzi ‏@scalzi
When retweeting things, try to be better than your racist aunt forwarding bullshit she found on Facebook. It's easier than you think.

Scalzi should focus on reasons to be cheerful.

For example, his daughter looks a lot like John Belushi.

Blogger Sherwood family December 01, 2016 5:36 AM

Geez...Steve. Leave poor little Bluto alone, man. That is her name, right? It's a shame she's on double secret probation.

This is easy to put down Vox. This is merely twisting the knife when it is already at the hilt and jammed in intercoastal space. The lung is deflated. But the head shot is affirmation of kill so go right on. Don't linger on scene for rigormortis, that might appear macabre.

Blogger Fenris Wulf December 01, 2016 5:45 AM

He doesn't just rip of the Big Three. He did an atrocious H. Beam Piper reboot as well and imposed his own shitty philosophy on it.

@2 Is that his daughter? That looks like him in drag. Scary.

Blogger Shimshon December 01, 2016 5:49 AM

I'm just curious. Was this "pro tip" a response to someone? Or perhaps just his over-inflated ego responding to imagined taunts?

Blogger SteelPalm December 01, 2016 5:51 AM

Vox mocking Scalzi will never get old. In addition to being a whiny, sensitive sissy and utter hack, Mr. "No Fucks Given" is astoundingly easy to troll on Twitter (even I, a nobody on the platform, did so successfully a few years back), which I encourage others to do.

On a marginally related note, I had never heard of H Beam Piper before Vox mentioned him a few days back and Fenris Wulf (great book, incidentally) referenced him again above.

And I call myself a science fiction fan!

Blogger Shimshon December 01, 2016 5:53 AM

I see a new metric in the making. The scalzi is the number of times in a single tweet that one of the Three Laws is violated.

Blogger JACIII December 01, 2016 5:53 AM

Shimshon, explain please. A score of 1 scalzi means in a single tweet somebody lied, projected, and doubled down? Am I getting this right? So if all of those things happen twice in a single tweet that is 2 scalzi, correct?

Blogger Jew613 December 01, 2016 6:01 AM

Shouldnt Scalzi be working on his books, not whining on twitter?

Anonymous Steve December 01, 2016 6:07 AM

Sherwood family - It's a shame she's on double secret probation.

Ha!

Jew613 - Shouldnt Scalzi be working on his books

Yeah. About that...

During the Trump administration, assuming he makes it through four years, I’m supposed to write four novels: the follow-ups to Lock In and The Collapsing Empire, and also two other novels. The times will find their way into those books whether I plot them to correspond directly to real world events or not (spoiler: I don’t plan to). How they will is at this point a mystery to me, as a) per above, I don’t know with any certainty where life is taking me or the nation, b) I haven’t written the books yet. We will see.

He goes on to say he TOTES WILL write those books, but I think we all know a "Trump ate my homework" excuse being prepped when we see it.

Blogger Shimshon December 01, 2016 6:20 AM

@12 Sherwood, I propose that a single violation of any law is a single scalzi. However, if all three laws are violated in a single tweet, well then, that's a complete scalzi. Or perhaps a double secret scalzi.

The scalzi rating on Gab will need to be calibrated due to the increased tweet length.

@8 SteelPalm, you are correct. This never gets old.

I still think my favorite use of scalzi is in the phrase "scalzied manboobs". I do not know who coined it but it is brilliant.

Anonymous Steve December 01, 2016 7:00 AM

Truth is, he's a poor writer, he knows he's a poor writer and is terrified that everyone else is figuring it out too.

Eh. He's OK. He's good at the easy breezy popcorn stuff like OMW. He's not creative enough to hold your interest in a series (the increasingly shitty sequels to OMW). He's not funny enough or insightful enough to do 300 pages of comedy (Redshirts).

His glib, snarky, Whedon-lite style of writing is perfectly readable if not inspiring.

But he's not a bad writer, just a one-trick pony who's leveraged that trick brilliantly, but probably has nowhere to go but down.

Really, his main problem is ideas. These days the reading public doesn't want standalone novels as much as it prefers series'.

Guys like Correia, Butcher, Larson, Van Dyke, Kratman, Wright and co. are capable of holding the readers' interest across multiple books. Partly because story, partly giving the reader what he wants (e.g. not shifting the tone of your popular Mil-SF series from space awesomeness to shitlibbery), partly because memorable and likeable characters.

I can't even remember the names of any Scalzi characters. They all have the same voice, which is Scalzi's voice.

One-trick pony.

Meanwhile, SWAN KNIGHT'S SWORD is out, and it's brilliant.

Anonymous Big Yard Too Shrimpy To Mow December 01, 2016 7:03 AM

OpenID basementhomebrewer December 01, 2016 7:14 AM

I am curious about the terms of his advance. I sure hope he hasn't spent too much of it. I would hate to see him lose that big beautiful lawn when he fails to deliver and has to pay TOR back.

Wonder how many fucks he will give then? I am sure it will some how be Trumps fault.

Anonymous TheBoom December 01, 2016 7:17 AM

If Scalzi didn't exist, Vox would have had to invent him. A great foil for Vox to torture, deflate and use as sad example of the SJW.

Blogger GAHCindy December 01, 2016 7:26 AM

I'd be a little more careful about calling a guy who's kicking my butt a failure. You'd think he'd be talking up what a formidable foe you are, how smart and crafty and incredibly handsome and wealthy and all sorts of stuff. Since he's losing on the numbers, and losing to a loser makes you something even worse than a loser, wouldn't it be more respectable to lose to a really worthy winner? But he is sjw, so I guess he can't understand how that works in a normal person's mind.

I got through Old Man's War without any trouble but that said there was nothing there that made me want to comeback to see what he had come up with next.

It was competently plotted and structured. Things happened in the right order. The main characters were at least characters although the support characters were just stereotypes.

The geriatric orgy was weird but expected. Despite what Scalzi claims, OMW was a lot more influenced by Joe Haldeman than it was Robert Heinlein.\

I have now begun to hear the new narrative that OMW is an underrated book. Uh-huh.

If you want an example of an underrated first book go with James P. Hogan's Inherit the Stars.

Cataline - The geriatric orgy was weird but expected.

God, yes. And I like doing sex to women in real life, but IMO it's always a mistake to write about it in skiffy. Because boring. And in this case also weird. Just cut to the post-coital cigarettes already, we get the idea.

He criminally underutilised the much more interesting and possibly horrifying implications of this "new body" business.

BV Larson's excellent pulp SF series UNDYING MERCENARIES explores the implications of that sort of technology in a much more satisfying way without skipping a storytelling beat or boring you with exposition.

I reckon you're right about the Haldeman influence, shame he also copied Haldeman's increasingly poor sequels strategy too. FOREVER PEACE was more a cry for help than a military SF novel.

Anonymous Andrew December 01, 2016 7:47 AM

I love the McRapey posts. So much fun. The most curios part for me is when he says "Pointed out to me."

Do we believe this? Do we think that someone is notifying Scalzi that Vox wrote something about him? Or is Scalzi occasionally checking in on Vox and then saying "Pointed out to me" to deflect criticism of his obsession with Vox?

It would be difficult to resolve except that we have a handy law for solving such mysteries: SJWs always lie.

Blogger 4499 December 01, 2016 7:51 AM

I would like to propose an advanced scoring system for scalzis, one that more accurately rewards the sender based upon tweet complexity.

Demonstrating any one of the three rules of SJWs Always Lie would award the sender one scalzi, with single-scalzi increases for repeated usage of the same rule. One rule used, one scalzi per usage.

Example 1: “Donald Trump wants to castrate transsexuals!” (Rule 1, lying, one scalzi)

Example 2: “Donald Trump wants to castrate transsexuals! And make blacks pick cotton!” (Rule 1, lying, two scalzis)

Example 3: “Donald Trump wants to castrate transsexuals! And make blacks pick cotton! And make women fix him sandwiches!” (Rule 1, lying, three scalzis)

Demonstrating any two of the three rules of SJWs Always Lie in one tweet would award four scalzis. Two rules used, two scalzis per usage.

Example 1: “Donald Trump is a white supremacist who thinks blacks shouldn’t be allowed on public transportation because they are too loud and scare him!” (Rule 1, lying, and Rule 3, projecting, four scalzis)

Demonstrating all three rules of SLWs Always Lie in one tweet would award nine scalzis. Three rules used, three scalzis per usage.

Example 1: “Donald Trump is too a white supremacist! He wants to make blacks pick cotton on the subway because they scare him! I saw it on Good Morning America!!1!” (Rule 1, lying, Rule 2, doubling down, and Rule 3, projecting, nine scalzis)

What misled a lot of people, including me, was that his coloring-by-Heinlein's-numbers approach seemed to indicate that he had a level of talent for SF. He didn't. The jarring bad notes in OMW - the snark, the absurd theology, the orgy, and the silly device-naming turned out to be the true Scalzi.

7 Wonders 'Science' Card rules:

3 types of scalzis: lies, double downs, projections.

Points are awarded as the sum of the squares of each individual law, with a +7 point bonus for each complete set.

"Trump wants to kill black people" - 1 lie, 1 scalzi

"Trump wants to kill black people and bomb Muslims" - 2 lies, 4 scalzis

"Trump wants to kill black people because he finds them dangerous" - 1 lie, 1 projection, 2 scalzis

"Vox Day called me a liar for saying Trump wants to kill blacks because they are dangerous - providing cover for Hitler." - Bingo! 1 lie, 1 double down, 1 projection. 10 scalzis!

With a kid as ugly as Scalzi's daughter is it any wonder really that he is in such strong denial about everything? She is the physical manifestation of his genetic failure. His whole life is an attempt at denying reality, changing the metrics of winning, or attempting to fake(lie) his way to respect. He is the epitome of a leftist. The world determined that he is a loser but instead of trying to remake himself in to an actual winner he wants to remake the world to define losing as winning. Ugliness is beauty, mediocrity is success, frauds are geniuses, and kings are secret all in an attempt to keep reality at bay. What he hates most is that Vox denies him this fantasy by constantly raining down redpills like a fucking B-52. He doesn't want to accept that he isn't at all better than the plebs he looks down on. He is in fact not nearly as good because the plebs at least accept they are plebs and make the best of it. Speaking of morals and stories, the lessons of Gamma are probably best transferred through didactic children's stories. Reason being, written stories are naturally introspective and demonstrative, so they work at the level of cognition where this internal behavior occurs.
