Championship Day

Aaron Rodgers's heroics notwithstanding, I think the Pack's run stops here. They were one strip sack from going out last week, and the Dallas rush didn't put anywhere nearly as much pressure on him as the Falcons will. The Vikings showed the way to contain and control Rodgers, and the Falcons have the same sort of speed and power in their front seven that the Vikings do. And the Packers defense does not match up well with the powerful Falcons attack, so I don't think it will be particularly close.

New England-Pittsburgh will be a good game, but I expect Brady to continue his dominance there. I expect Belichick to let Bell get his yards, but shut down the Steeler passing game.

My prediction for the Super Bowl remains what it was before the playoffs. New England-Atlanta, with Brady and Belichick claiming one more ring together.

I agree. Rodgers is amazing, but one-string banjos don't win the Super Bowl. I love Atlanta's speed, and they have a hot QB, so they have a chance against NE, but can't be the favorite.

Jordy Nelson says he will suit up and play but with multiple broken ribs; his impact remains to be seen. Davante Adams will play but didn't practice much at all this week.

Watch for Falcons WR Taylor Gabriel and their RB's to go off on Packers weak secondary.

My only goal for this year's playoffs remains the same - some team must stop the Patriots from winning another Super Bowl, preferably in the most painful way possible.

Blogger Nate January 22, 2017 1:23 PM

Imma go with the Falcons. Matty Ice is playing as well or better than Rogers... and Atlanta has far more weapons for him to go to.

Plus ATL's D is way better.

I expect freeman to gash Greenbay in the second half. The Packer D will wear down just like they did last week... only this time the offense facing them will be a woodchipper of death and saddness.

Blogger YIH January 22, 2017 1:24 PM

I like your optimism Vox. Considering that's comparing the Vikes D early in the season with the current Pack D...
On paper, all four are good matchups, better on offense than defense.
You have three very likely future HOF QBs here (Ryan is excellent, but he's never been in a SB), with the rules set up to highlight them. This is what the NFL wants, promote the QB stars, and that's what they got.
My gut says the Packers will beat the Falcons, but the Steelers won't be able to upset the Pats. Let's see what happens.

I agree with VD's conclusions about the Falcons/Green Bay. One hundred percent logical... but... BUT... the Falcons just scream "opposite of clutch" and such teams are usually victimized by QB's like Chucky Cheese Rodgers.

Green Bay wins, 30-21

@14 "God I hate the Patriots."

Amen.

I refuse to make a pick on this game. There is no data that exists anywhere on the planet (deflating headset-killing Billicheating & Cheatriot tactics notwithstanding) which suggests that the Steelers can defeat the Patriots. The needle points precisely due south for Pittsburgh.

The great unknown of the game is whether or not Brady will continue victimize the Steelers secondary, which has drastically improved over the latter half of this season, and if Edleman can be neutralized.

There is also another factor: will Brady be delivered a case of Bud Heavy, or Bud Light? If it's Bud Heavy, then his hangover will be quite severe.

Okay, I lied about the prediction.

Steelers win, 35-23

This Bud's for you.

Blogger Nate January 22, 2017 2:12 PM

"the Falcons just scream "opposite of clutch" and such teams are usually victimized by QB's like Chucky Cheese Rodgers."

While I don't necessarily disagree with this... the weak spot is that it doesn't take into account the Pack D and the way it fades in the second half. By the 4th Quarter... the Falcons will basically be playing against air.

Blogger Nate January 22, 2017 2:13 PM

As for the Patriots game... I make no prediction. I don't care who wins. I'm only hoping for one thing.

Blogger Nate January 22, 2017 2:49 PM

this is why I could never be a football coach. In a situation like this... I would simply have a specific play designed to do nothing else but get one guy a free shot at the QB. Even if it was late or after the whistle.

I would just move sign a guy off the street and pay him 25k to be the guy that destroys the QB's knees.

So he gets kicked out of the league? so what? He wasn't in the league. He was only there to paralyze your QB.

I win.

Please. Everyone knows Brady was using lower than allowed pressure in the balls. The fact that the league couldn't "prove" it is beside the point. The NFL isn't a court of law. They didn't need to. And the team has established a pattern of cheating. They don't get the benefit of a doubt with the league.

Anonymous Jack Amok January 22, 2017 6:12 PM

Falcons are more than Matty Ice. They also have - surprise surprise - a defense. Their season-long numbers don't look great, but that's because they're fairly young, fast, and inexperienced. But inexperienced guys are way more inexperienced at the start of the season then they are at the end.

The Falcons remind me a lot of the 2013 Seahawks but with better receivers. Paging Dan Quinn...

Blogger tublecane January 22, 2017 6:16 PM

@65-If no one cares about the Falcons, why would the NFL want them in the Superbowl? The Packers are a better known and more loved franchise, they have the underdog story, and Rodgers is a bigger star than any Falcon.

@72-Those guys like stories, and so does the tv audience. "The Packers' spirits never recovered from a tragic fumble on the whatever yard-line when they within 10 points early in the game" is a better story than "the Packers pretty much sucked all day and Atlanta is simply a better team."

OpenID phenixrising16 January 22, 2017 6:29 PM

It obvious that Aaron Rodgers has the flu, and has it bad. It doesn't even sound like him doing the cadence (no Green-19 or Blue-52 all day long, just mumbles) and he's sitting like a lump when he's on the sidelines. Totally unlike him. Sick as he is, he's still playing well enough to win because he's Aaron F'in Rodgers.

On the other hand, that has nothing to do with why the Falcons are winning the game, only the margin. Matty Ice has just shredded the depleted Packers defense, putting on a clinic. Falcons deserve the W.

The NFL, because of the salary cap, has become a game of 'underpay your QBs.' You have to get more value out of your players than you paid for them, and QBs are the most valuable pieces. Rogers won his SB on his rookie deal. Same with Wilson and Flacco. Newton and Kaep got to the Bowl on their rookie deals. Brady has never been paid market value, ever, and it shouldn't surprise you that Belichick is an econ major. Manning has always demanded top dollar for his services, and until last season had a losing playoff record, which made Denver's run all the more impressive since they had to carry Manning's carcass across the finish line. Manning was paid $18M and probably gave them $9M in productivity.

Denver's 2015 D, BTW, mostly rookie deals and veteran "show me you have something left" bargains.

The Patriots get one call after another call after another call after another call... and one no call after another no call... holding, offsides... etc, etc then they know exactly how to attack the Steelers defense... another cheating controversy coming out guaranteed 100%. Then another swoon in nfl ratings and revenue... kraft begging the government for bailouts... you'll see...

And then after the Jason H. the NT... where he was ruled not having come up with the fumble, after he, you know, picked up the ball and handed it to the ref after Brady fumbled it LOL... I mean just eliminate instant replay all together. Just call it "The NFL Live Action Black Box." Because you the fans, you know, just don't know what happens in that black box! The suspense alone will bring back all those NFL ratings really it will!

Lazarus, that was the funniest thing I have seen in a while. Tears from laughing so hard. Thank you.
