Darkstream: winning at the moral level

Tonight's Darkstream will be at 7:30 PM Eastern, and in light of recent events, will address 4GW and winning at the moral level. Sign up here to catch it. My intention is to turn it into the 10-minute equivalent of the last post of the day, leaving you with something to discuss until the morning.

Also, we'll be having the first Brainstorm of 2017 next week. I hope to have all the final details we discussed at the last one wrapped up this weekend; invites will go out Monday evening.

UPDATE: The replay is available here for the next 24 hours.

Having seen the Spencer attack video, and having been doing weights for 18 months, I now want to get into a martial art, as a precautionary measure.

Any recommendations? I'm nearly 50, fit and lean, and looking for self-defence, rather than looking for trouble. Thanks.

Martial art, sure they're fun, but in practical matters engineering beats art. In order: Glock; Sig-Sauer; Steyr; Heckler & Koch; Fabrique Nationale d'Herstal (FN); Beretta; Colt; Smith & Wesson; Ruger; Kimber; and Browning.

I recommend learning the basics of boxing first. After that get into a good grappling martial art like jiu jitsu, judo, aikido, etc. These will teach you take downs and submission holds though you will most likely need to make a special deal with a sensei to skip all the fluff and filler. Have them teach you the submission holds such as the rear naked choke and various ways to get an arm bar. Leg submissions are generally harder to master and apply.

And though this isn't practical for most, learning the basics to free style wrestling. Wrestlers will absolutely crush with ease those who are not adept at countering it. It does have flaws in that defensive grappling arts such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can take advantage of it, but this is limited to ring trained amateurs and pros.

In summary, you really cannot discount a well rounded skill set. You need to be adept at strikes, blocking, offensive and defensive grappling, as well as have an toolkit of at least half a dozen submission holds.

I didn't even touch on kicking arts because most people simply are not athletic enough to make the kicking arts work for them in a street fight.

During one of my profound studies of all history ever recorded, I stumbled across this interesting connection of two psalms in the old testament to an elder Ugaritic myth from more than 3000 years ago:

Let me tell you, Prince Baal,
let me repeat, Rider on the Clouds:
Now, your enemy, Baal,
now you will kill your enemy,
now you will annihilate your foe.
You will take your eternal kingdom,
your dominion forever and ever.

Behold your enemies, Yahweh,
behold, your enemies perish,
all evildoers are scattered. (Psalm 92:9 [Hebrew 92:10])
Your kingship is an eternal kingdom,
your dominion is forever and ever. (Psalm 145:13)

Outstanding analysis. Proportionality requires emotional restraint, which means that Ares must remain locked in his cage. I keep a little statue of Athena (the Goddess of Strategic Warfare) on my bookcase to remind me to temper my emotions. BTW, I met Col. Hackworth in the early 1990s. What a natural leader! Regarding self defence. Full disclosure I'm no expert I will just impart my experience.

Decades ago I was a bouncer. I was pretty strong, decent build and athletic (stopped doing chin ups at 27 because the test required 3). I had done 6 months boxing in my pre 20's but opted for Kung-fu which I trained pretty diligently for a westerner.

So I'm working as a bouncer and things spiral out of control and we are in a brawl. Out of the corner of my eye I spot a punch incoming for my noggin. Despite the hard work I'd put into Kung-fu I covered up boxing style. Also whilst throwing blows my Kung-fu wasn't exactly dropping the fools so I went back to the 6 months boxing. Fitness, strength and sobriety willed out.

RE Aikido. Big fan of the ideal of the art. I gave it an honest go but it was _my_ experience that I just didn't see it working for reals for me. I suspect that the art was co-opted and ruined.

You're over 50 but have 18 months of strength training behind you. If you like the idea of grappling BJJ or Judo is worth looking at. If you can find a legit BJJ gym that trains for self defence - leap at the opportunity.

I hope that helps in some small way.

Something is odd about the Seattle shooting. Video appears to show the guy who did the shooting being attacked before he shot. Pictures show the guy he shot being helped by people dressed as typical Black Bloc professional anarchists, and his friends claim he's an antifa Bernster. Yet the shooter claims he was shooting a "white supremacist."

And the po-po let him go...

Man, weird.

Well, add another consideration to the "if it comes to violence" list - violence tends to get really confusing.

After seeing the video, first thought is that it was self defense. Bald headed (apparently) antifa comes out of the crowd, hones in on yellow hat for whatever reason, continually sprays something in his face, and won't let go, all the while yelling at him, his buddies joining in and trying to pull yellow hat further into the crowd.

Also - and some of the commentators over at Breitbart are saying similar - seems yellow hat is throwing the a line out about white supremacy, knowing that both authorities and the press will get all Pavlovian and at the least hesitate, at most let him go. Nevermind that it's the typical "Gegen Nazis" patch from the past 3 decades that you can likely now find at Forever 21. All he saw was a red hakenkreuz!... and responded.

The Asian thing is more of the same; even though the video's not that detailed, guy physically seems Asian in the same sense as Roosh is. Again, the dogs have to respond to the whistle, turning the ever merciful Judeo-Christian cheek and letting protected class go.

Vox,

I have one quibble to make with your discussion tonight: namely your assertion that we lost the occupation in Iraq.

That is definitively untrue. We didn't lose: we abandoned the project partway into its beginning.

The surge in 2007/2008 worked. Between the increased force levels and adopting the COIN methodology, our boys beat back, or at least suppressed, the hostiles there. It was only after we up and pulled out that all hell truly broke loose.

Approve of the idea of changing Iraq and its culture or not, once we embarked on it, it was always going to be a project that required years - more like decades - to complete. Bush Jr told us as much when he said that the war on Terror would take a long, long time, and we wouldn't see the major battles of it because they wouldn't be shown on TV. And we knew it also from our experiences post-WW2. We left troops in Japan to provide deterence to the Russians and the North Koreans, but also to ensure that the forced changes to their constitution and civilian culture that we imposed took.

Changing a culture doesn't - cannot - happen overnight. It takes decades, generations. And even then it may not actually happen.

It is certainly legitimate to debate whether we should have ever attempted to change the culture in Iraq or not. But once we embarked upon that task, it always and ever could only be accomplished after decades of occupation and forced societal change.

Bush's big blunder was failing to realize that the American public does not have the patience anymore to accomplish such a long-term mission. And in failing to recognize the complete lack of goodwill that his political enemies had. That lack of patience in our public, and complete lack of anything resembling an ability to even be willing to try to understand the big picture in the left-wing of our politics is what prompted our premature bug-out from Iraq, and the subsequent, and completely predictable, chaos that ensured afterwords.

Just as the Viet Cong and the NVA did not defeat us in the VIetnam war, it was not the enemy on the ground in theater that did us in in Iraq - it was the enemy at home.

So please don't say we were defeated. We weren't. We simply quit. There's a big difference between the two.

Again, I am not trying to argue that we should have been there. Merely that once we were, it was totally winnable...given the patience and will required (which we proved, yet again, that we do not have. But still, we COULD have).

Blogger Nick S January 22, 2017 2:09 AM

What is already happening globally and is on the horizon in the United States is a holy war. Maintaining the moral high ground is going to require more than proportional responses. It's going to require vast psyops. Ideologies need to be soundly defeated in the minds of the observers. Just need to adapt what you've been doing here for years and scale it up. I know, you're already on it.

My friend was telling me that in the 1948 war, Israel had a couple major losses. I knew about this. What I didn't know was that at least two of those battles had female commanders (Gush Eztion was one). The IDF learned the lesson and purged women from any serious combat role after that. The feminist inroads today are bad, but pale in comparison to what other armies are suffering from.

I don't know where your friend gets that idea, but the commander of Gush Etzion was Moshe Zilberschmidt (not sure if that's how he would transliterate his last name)

Blogger Shimshon January 22, 2017 2:47 AM

Blogger Shimshon January 22, 2017 2:59 AM

Vox, pertaining to your comments on the largest invasion in history. How far do you think President Trump can go in deporting the illegal part of that? Yes, I know, good start, and all. But I imagine he can respond more forcefully to that element and not lose the moral high ground.

Blogger Noah B The MacroAggressor January 22, 2017 3:19 AM

That is definitively untrue. We didn't lose: we abandoned the project partway into its beginning.

A distinction without difference. We lost the war in Iraq because Americans and our political leadership gave up on the war, but we lost nevertheless because we failed to meet the goal set by our political leadership of stabilizing Iraq. As was true in Vietnam the loss can't be blamed primarily on the soldiers, but soldiers would do well to remember that they do not win wars without the support of the people.

Quitting is just one kind of failure.

Had Bush set more modest and realistic goals for the invasion of Iraq, we would have had the latitude to leave as soon as it became clear that there were no active WMD development programs. But Bush's "compassion" prevented him from making the hard and necessary choices.

Blogger SteelPalm January 22, 2017 3:22 AM

Well, the God Emperor is playing it smart right now; simply going after the criminal invaders who have then gone on to commit further crimes afterwards. The "murderers" and "rapists" of his first noteworthy speech.

Democrats refuse to retreat on anything though, so they have vowed to defend these rapists and murderers.

This makes gaining the moral high ground very easy for Trump. Once he breaks these cities (many of which are dependent on federal money), it's possible he might be able to deport a good deal of the remaining ones, and some other invaders (of the criminal as well as legal variety) would self-deport.

Of course, I'm not anticipating some miracle.

Trump would have to, at the very least, deport all the anchor babies AND Muslims and even then that wouldn't be enough, since we would be left with the 13% blacks, who are 90% against the US and whites.

Not to mention the 15% Hispanics, which aren't nearly as disloyal, ruinous, and stupid, but still feature many hardcore nationalists/supremacists and are about 65-70% leftist.

And while they're curiously ignored by many Alt-Right sources, or even praised by them, Asians are about 6% of the population, vote leftist 75% of the time, are the RICHEST single racial group in the US, and have a slew of nationalists/supremacists in their midst. (Compare that to Jews being 2% of the population and 70% leftist)

So yeah, as Vox said in his 2nd Periscope video, we're still looking at some type of Balkanization around 2033.

Trump will simply put us in a better, safer position for when that occurs.

You're wrong. The USA absolutely lost the occupation in Iraq. You have no idea what you're talking about; you are stuck in 2GW thinking about acquiring ground and the physical level of war.

So please don't say we were defeated. We weren't. We simply quit. There's a big difference between the two.

And Germany wasn't defeated in WWII, it simply surrendered unconditionally. There is no difference between the two. The object of war is to make your enemy stop fighting and do what you want. The enemy in Iraq succeeded in doing that.
