Divisional Round, Day 2

Yesterday went as expected. Atlanta walked over Seattle and New England had no trouble with Houston. Today, I think Dallas will run over the Green Bay defense and keep the ball out of Aaron Rodgers's lethal hands enough to win. No idea about Pittsburgh vs Kansas City, except that if it's close late, Mike Tomlin will manage the clock better than Andy Reid.

UPDATE: Wow! Incredible play by Rodgers, both to not fumble the ball on the sack, then to hit Cook to set up the game-winning field goal. But the game was lost, not won, by the Dallas coaching staff. I couldn't BELIEVE it when they downed the ball on 1-and-10, then didn't run the ball twice when facing third-and-3.

If you don't play to win in the playoffs, chances are you're going to lose. And Jason Garrett did not play to win. What on EARTH was he thinking, to give the ball back to Aaron Rodgers with 35 seconds and two time outs in a tie game?

It's probably age, but I HATE it when rookies go all the way. Let 'em suffer for a few years like the rest of us.

Your predictions have been pretty good thus far. I hope you're right about my 'Boys. Surprising call coming from an NFC North guy. Or, rather, a Vikings fan.
But I'm not optimistic. Won't be unless or until it's over. Funny and amazing things happen in 4th quarters with hot hands QB's, always have in the playoffs.

Blogger Jose January 15, 2017 2:54 PM

But but but where are the 49ers? Don't they get a special dispensation for their $19MM/annum quarterback's courage despite a minor twelve losses in a row?

Blogger Mr.MantraMan January 15, 2017 3:39 PM

Green Bay in a close one, more Clay Matthews on the field in the middle to protect against long runs, safety play has been good its just the corners that are getting torched.

Blogger RC January 15, 2017 3:41 PM

The KC offense has more options than it has in a long time, plus the bye week should have helped heal the primary pass rushers. The ice storms changed a lot of plans and that could be a factor pre-game travel and prep, though the main brunt of the storm stayed slightly to the south of KC and roads are easily passable now with the increasing temperatures. It should be a competitive and interesting game.

> ...Mike Tomlin will manage the clock better than Andy Reid.

Is there anyone in the league you can't say that about?

Blogger Cail Corishev January 15, 2017 3:58 PM

Last I heard, KC was #1 in the league in takeaways, which unfortunately reminds me of those dominant 13-3 teams in the 90s that went down in their first playoff games. When you win with opportunistic defense, you can suffer in the playoffs when other teams tighten up their play.

But KC certainly can win it, if Smith spreads the ball around and Marcus Peters and Tyreek Hill are on. Just so it isn't close in the end and depending on good clock management.

Blogger Dave January 15, 2017 4:15 PM

Mike Tomlin will manage the clock better than Andy Reid.

The shirtless guy in Section 7d who's had way too much to drink would manage the clock better than Reid. I'd actually take anybody in the stadium that wasn't Andy Reid to manage the clock.

I've seen this scenario often. It's very early in the game, possibly the first drive, 3rd and long; they would need to move the ball at least 50 yds to even attempt a field goal.

Reid takes too long to get the play in so they call time-out to avoid the 5-yard delay of game penalty. So he's used one of three timeouts, still has to convert a 3rd and long, still has to drive the length of the field to even attempt to score, but, by golly, he avoided that delay of game.

That TBD team has a ruthless schedule ahead. First they got NE in NE, but then they got themselves either here or there. Makes the over-under and enigma wrapped in a budweiser.

Blogger Cail Corishev January 15, 2017 5:13 PM

Not in KC; his last season in KC was 7-9. The year before that had been 13-3. In his ten years there, they went to the playoffs seven times, and lost the first game all seven.

He did get fired from San Diego after going 14-2, though, so that might be what you're thinking of.

Blogger Cail Corishev January 15, 2017 5:29 PM

Reid takes too long to get the play in so they call time-out to avoid the 5-yard delay of game penalty.

I see teams taking an early "we weren't quite prepared for the play" timeout every week, even top QBs like Brady and Rodgers, and I'll never understand it. There are very few situations where 5 yards is more valuable than a timeout. It's even more mind-boggling when a team takes one for that reason in the second half. Eat the five yards and save the clock-stopper.

And yet it's perfectly legal for GB to do a quick snap to get a 12 men on the field call when the defense is trying to do a perfectly normal substitution. Some people like the "haha, fooled you" rules lawyering, but I'd rather see guys play than refs confer.

Modern American football (especially NFL football) is about having control of the last drive of the game. Defenses pretty much fall apart in the fourth quarter; with the exception of lucky plays, offenses will beat defenses most of the time. A team can make up 2 touchdowns or more with less than 5 minutes of the game, when the other team can't keep the ball on offense. The only way to be sure to win a game is to burn the time off yourself with your offense.

The Cowboys had the ability to run the clock out and go to overtime (or even possibly win it), and they violate rule one: Control the ball. They give a luck machine 2 time outs and a bunch of chances, and he made one pay off.

The Chiefs are setting up the same thing: their defense has been run a bunch, and the Steelers will probably have the ball for much of the fourth quarter. The Chiefs will probably end up giving the Steelers control of the game in the end, at this rate.

Teams that have several pass rushers on their roster DO rotate them. Problem is, most pass rushers suck, and there's that pesky problem of roster limits and cap space. It's not economical to keep 7 or 8 of them on the roster, and teams are lucky to find 3 or 4 good ones anyway.

In 2013/14, the Seahawks rotated a bunch of Defensive linemen throughout the game, and they tended to stomp on other teams in teh 4th quarter. In 2015, free agency and injuries meant they had way less depth on the D-Line and they started having trouble stopping teams in the 4th quarter.

Interviewing FG kicker. LOL. They ain't supposed to miss.

Field goals aren't going to cut it against the Patriots.

He was sufficiently humble, I thought. He shoulda said, pointing to the guys who just left, " They made the dessert, I am just supposed to put the cherry on top"

And if he doesn't, he is reviled, and fired.

That's the way it goes, boys.

It's not economical to keep 7 or 8 of them on the roster, and teams are lucky to find 3 or 4 good ones anyway.

That was where the Seahawks spent most of the dividend they got from having so many cheap guys on rookie contracts four years ago. Their D-Line was:

Michael Bennett
Cliff Avril
Brandon Mebane
Red Bryant
Tony McDaniel
O'Brien Schofield
Chris Clemons
Clinton McDonald

They hung onto Bennett and Avril (and McDaniel came back from semi-retirement this year), but they lost everyone else to FA as they had to start paying guys. Their biggest problem on defense this year was getting pressure up the middle, and that was really evident in the ATL game yesterday.

They are not supposed to win. their mission is to put Brady out for the season. Trouble is, they probably have delusions of grandeur.

Laid many a good man low.

KC out in one. Again. The amount of protection Roethlisberger got in the backfield was magnitudes greater than what Smith got. Story of the night and the season.

Meh. Worthlessburger is 2-6 vs. Brady head-to-head.

Blogger Cail Corishev January 15, 2017 11:44 PM

Yeah, you can't let a good QB like Big Ben stand back there unmolested all game and expect to win. You have to get in his face and put some pressure on him, even if it means taking some risks.

Upthread somewhere, I said the Chiefs won all season on takeaways, so if they didn't come out ahead on those, they were in trouble. Sure enough....

The Steelers did a heck of a job shutting down Hill on kick returns, too. No one else was able to do that all season.

According to this story, Rodgers made up the last play in the huddle, "Cobb said the final play was not an actual playcall. Rodgers just told each receiver what to do, like a kid drawing in the dirt. Seriously." Yes, a good game, and an excellent QB.

Blogger Lazarus January 15, 2017 11:46 PM

I repeat. Pittsburgh's mission impossible, should they choose to accept it, is to so debilitate the Patriots with season ending injuries that they are neutralized.

Other than that, they have no further use.

Blogger Cail Corishev January 15, 2017 11:47 PM

Now Pittsburg will have used themselves up winning this tough one, so the Patriots will cruise over them and be right back in the Super Bowl. I expect the Steelers to commit the giveaways next week that they avoided this week, making the Patriots look better too. You can see it coming.

Blogger Rambam January 15, 2017 11:50 PM

Green Bay vs New England
Matt Ryan will succumb to the pressure of the moment. They quit calling him Marty Ice awhile back.

Fine, Nate. We get that you hate the Pats. You don't have to stoop to using pseudonyms now.

Equally, the Pats will not be as bad next week as they were against the Texans.

Gillette stadium, where they do everthing except shave points.

Anonymous Jack Amok January 16, 2017 12:01 AM

Still, it wasn't poetic enough. KC should have had the last possession and lost when the clock ran out with the field goal team running onto the field.

Anonymous RJ January 16, 2017 12:04 AM

Pittsburgh has some people that could damage Brady physically. Nate will be pleased.

Yes, but if someone like Harrison breathes on Brady it's gonna be 15 yards and a first down.

New England OWNS the Steelers, especially in the playoffs. The Steelers haven't beaten the Patriots in Foxboro since 2008 (regular season game). The Steelers are 1-3 against the Pats in the Postseason, and the win was 7-6 at Three Rivers in 1998.

Brady's gonna carve up that crappy secondary.

Blogger Rambam January 16, 2017 12:08 AM

On a side note, Texans need to clean house. I suggest relocating to San Diego.

James Harrison is NOT Jadeveon Clowney (what kind of name is that?) James don't want to stop you. He want to kill you. Different Fu

Yah, but if Brady has a broken leg after, what's 15 yards?

look, the Packers defense is not going to harass Brady enough to win. the falcons defense is not going to harass Brady enough to win.

Belichick has applied OODA Loop theory to cheating:
you can outlaw what he was doing last year, he's cheating a new way this year.

Blogger AdognamedOp January 16, 2017 6:17 AM

Aside from the lop-sided scores, the unending commercials have made these playoffs almost unbearable to watch. Every fking kick-off, TD, Change of possession, video review, punt, on field injury, end of quarter, etc. leads to a commercial break. I didn't research it, but I seems to me that for every five seconds of actual play there are like 3 20 second commercials. And most of the commercials are just promos from the station hosting the game.

Anonymous Azimus January 16, 2017 2:50 PM

I don't see anybody beating the Pats - but then again nobody saw the Giants beating them in their (almost) perfect 18-1 season.

Blogger Buybuydandavis January 16, 2017 11:36 PM

" I couldn't BELIEVE it when they downed the ball on 1-and-10 ..."

Garrett has always been crappy at game management. Used to lose a couple of games every season that way.

This one is interesting in that I groaned when I saw Dak down the ball, but to be fair, teams do this all the time.

I think it's the specifics of the situation that made it such a bad call. You're facing Rodgers. You're still out of FG range, and will use all 4 downs to get the first, so that losing 1 down is less of an issue.

Also note the lack of a timeout at the end of the first half prevented them from having any time after GB punt to get in FG range. And that they didn't take a swing at the free kick opportunity either.

Lax game management. For years.

Blogger Buybuydandavis January 16, 2017 11:39 PM

UPDATE: Wow! Incredible play by Rodgers, both to not fumble the ball on the sack, then to hit Cook to set up the game-winning field goal.

I thought the catch was much more incredible. I have never seen a guy kneeling on the sidelines but keeping his tippy toes in. And he immediately got control of the ball and kept it on the way down.

Amazing. Never seen anything like it.

James Dixon wrote:> ...Mike Tomlin will manage the clock better than Andy Reid.

Is there anyone in the league you can't say that about?

Funny you should mention that.

Jason Garrett.
