Instapundit on Trump's media strategy

As usual, Glenn Reynolds presents an intelligent perspective that will go almost completely ignored by the very media to whom, and about whom, he is talking:
First, the thing to understand is that, as I’ve said before, one of the changes going on with Trump generally is the renegotiation of various post-World War II institutional arrangements. One of those is the institutional arrangement involving the press and the White House. For decades, the press got special status because it was seen as both powerful, and institutionally responsible. (And, of course, allied with the Democrats who were mostly in charge of setting up those postwar institutional arrangements). Now those things have changed. If the press were powerful, it would have beaten Trump. If it were responsible, it wouldn’t be running away with fake news whenever it sees a chance to run something damaging to Trump. And, of course, there’s no alliance between Trump and the media, as there was with Obama.

So things will change. The press’s “insider” status — which it cherishes — is going to fade. (This is producing waves of status anxiety, as are many other Trump-induced institutional changes). And, having abandoned, quite openly, any pretense of objectivity and neutrality in the election, the press is going to be treated as an enemy by the Trump Administration until further notice.

In fact, Trump’s basically gaslighting them. Knowing how much they hate him, he’s constantly provoking them to go over the top. Sean Spicer’s crowd-size remarks are all about making them seem petty and negative. (And, possibly, teeing up crowd-size comparisons at next week’s March For Life, which the press normally ignores but which Trump will probably force them to cover).

Trump knows that the press isn’t trusted very much, and that the less it’s trusted, the less it can hurt him. So he’s prodding reporters to do things that will make them less trusted, and they’re constantly taking the bait. They’re taking the bait because they think he’s dumb, and impulsive, and lacking self-control — but he’s the one causing them to act in ways that are dumb and impulsive, and demonstrate lack of self-control. As Richard Fernandez writes on Facebook, they think he’s dumb because they think he has lousy taste, but there are a lot of scarily competent guys out there in the world who like white and gold furniture. And, I should note, Trump has more media experience than probably 99% of the people covering him. (As Obama operative Ben Rhodes gloated with regard to selling a dishonest story on the Iran deal, the average reporter the Obama White House dealt with “is 27 years old, and their only reporting experience consists of being around political campaigns.” In Rhodes’ words, “they literally know nothing.”)

The counter-move for the press isn’t to double down on anti-Trump messaging. The counter-move is to bolster its own trustworthiness by acting more neutral and sober, and by being more trustworthy. If the news media actually focused on reporting facts accurately and straightforwardly, on leaving opinion to the pundits, and on giving Trump a clearly fair shake, then Trump’s tactics wouldn’t work, and any actual dirt they found on him would do actual damage. He’s betting on the press being insufficiently mature and self-controlled to manage that. So far, his bet is paying off.
I can't say I'm surprised. As an astonishingly perspicacious and remarkably handsome gentleman once observed, SJWs always double down.

Supreme Dark Lord, it's hard to be humble?

It won't go over their heads, they'll dodge it by a mile. Glenn Reynolds is literally Hitler, and so he can be safely ignored. Though kudos to Newshour for even broadcasting him, I guess?

Very entertaining.

His point kept being ignored in the very interview this comes from. Glenn pointed out that these kinds of picky fights are deliberately chosen by Trump to reduce the credibility of the media. So what do the host and the other interviewee (from Politico) do? Start talking about how this crowd size anecdote is hurting the credibility of the press secretary should something significant come up.

Plus, they think they've got something with this "alternative facts" term. Yeah, just keep pushing that line, keep throwing that rabbit into the brier patch, fake news groupies. All your hashtags are belong to us anyway.

If you read The Art of the Deal, you'll see that he's been gaming the media for decades. He was younger and less experienced then, and the media was generally more competent, so this stuff now is child's play. It's like watching a matador play around with a bull, right before he runs it through.

She and Trump's administration are playing a great rope-a-dope with the fake news media. Their credibility now at 14% will be lower than a pedophile used car salesman by the time they finally capitulate, or some organization steps into the void to give fair and balanced reporting.

I think Trump will let them dig a little deeper for awhile and outright ban some of them from any administration coverage. Deplatformed baby!

He's right, but the media can't afford to report honestly on Trump. That would take away his ability to bait them into looking foolish; but it would also tell more Americans that he's actually quite capable, his plans are patriotic and make tons of sense, he's not at all the racist/sexist/bigot they claimed, and they've been lying about him for the past year.

Blogger Cail Corishev January 23, 2017 1:26 PM

They're so far out in the weeds at this point that you need a map to follow them. You know you're using bad rhetoric when readers have to look up your term to find out whether it's supposed to be good or bad.

Unfortunately, that photo of the allegedly poorly attended inauguration is being believed even Trump supporters. People are arguing that the entrances were blocks or people were scared away or yada yada.

The simple fact is the photo was taken early in the day. Later photos show the area packed.

All this revolt against the MSM, and too many people, including Deporables, are *still* accepting their shit at face value. C'mon, people...

Trump is also creating some good insurance against the inevitable manufactured Watergate witch hunt that is the press will launch.

By demonstrating enough times that the press lies about EVERYTHING including inauguration day crowd size, then any "scandals" they generate will also be dismissed.

@8, I think the smarter ones realize that "alternative facts" is a trap. They'll keep the definition open as they try to decide what it means while the less bright latch on to it like a teenager with a new phone. Then, after about a week or so of that term gaining traction, I can see a Trump or other media-savvy figure catch someone in something terribly, obviously wrong (like the MLK bust thing) and labeling them "Alt Fact". Can you imagine the field day Milo would have with that term and all the people labeling him a white supremacist?

Blogger justaguy January 23, 2017 2:45 PM

The press as the old-fashioned media--papers and TV has a waning influence on the large masses of uninformed voters who decide the presidential election. Culture and social media have a much larger influence and here Trump is fighting back. With Fox News now neutral after Kelly left, the press will hold minor influence with the masses and really only influence Senator McCain and Speaker Ryan.

The real battle is now to how those who vote actually get their ideas-- and that is everything from video games, culture, and social media. Trump had a huge advantage in that he was already defined by his time as a reality TV star. It really wasn't possible to re-define him after 10+ years in the low information public eye. At least he has Bannon who realizes the fight. The Left got too used to Cuck Bush who didn't think it was proper to fight back so he just allowed his party to be pummeled for 8 years.

I think you've got it backwards. People herd. No one sets the trend, it sets itself. Social mood is endogenously regulated.

This is absolutely counterintuitive and difficult for people to imagine, but it's the only theory that consistently fits the facts. No trend is more strong and more widely embraced than one about to reverse.

Each of us is guided by this. We cannot escape it. Trust/openness/friskiness/daring in upturns reverses to distrust/anger/fear/caution in downturns. How this manifests is open to change, but the larger trend just works its way through the fractal.

We are due for a downturn of a degree of magnitude not seen since the 1700's, larger than that which set off the world wars and populated the graveyards of communism.

No wonder the Zombie Apocalypse genre is foreshadowing our unconscious fears.

Trump throws out a lot of opinionated, hyperbolic, generalized, over the top, statements that many people recognize as such. The media is too dumb to recognize the correct form of communication. Today they were reminding Spicer that Trump said on the campaign that he'd undo all of Obama's horrible Executive Orders on the first day - and this being the first day, Trump didn't do that (so he's a liar that can't be trusted). Uh yeah, nobody thought he meant the literal first day.

Blogger tublecane January 24, 2017 12:17 AM

I dispute his characterization of the White House/press special relationship. He makes it sound like the press was something Washington feared and respected, so it sat down and hammered out a compromise, or something. As regards institutional responsibility, pah. That's neither here nor there. It was about power, but not the dangerous power of an independent press, like with Nixon. Except Nixon was fighting a good portion of Washington, too.

No, they (FDR gets most of the credit) decided to harness the power of the press by sitting it down and telling it what to report everyday. That's what press conferences are all about. That's what controlled leaks are about. That's why newsrooms are constantly on the horn asking permission to run with stories, unless they grow balls as with the Snowden stuff.

How press conferences ever got to be mistaken for the press' opportunity to hold the president to account, I have no idea. I suppose it makes sense when the press doesn't like the president. But he's hardly ever there to berate, anyway. And no matter who's in the White House most of the press and the government are on the same team, anyway.

Blogger tublecane January 24, 2017 12:25 AM

@3-I don't get the "alternative facts" thing. Are they pretending it's like "alternative truth?" Because while there's only one truth, there are plenty of facts out there. Some of them previously unnoticed or unpublicized. Hence "alternative."

Maybe it's a Daniel Patrick Moynihan thing. "You're entitled to your own opinion, but you're not entitled to your own facts." That was him, right? I never cared for that saying, but it doesn't apply, in any case. Because no one's talking about Trump Facts, or our side's facts. Just alternative facts. They belong to everyone.

It's not going to come off how they want it to, anyway. So why am I even talking about it?

Blogger tublecane January 24, 2017 12:38 AM

@49-Now that I think about it, "alternative facts" might have been planted by Team Trump on purpose, like a time bomb. To blow up in the MSM's face, or just to tie them up diffusing it. Or, hope beyond hope, it could be a,way to start talking about "hate facts."

You know, those things we all know which Joe America hasn't been taught. Things which he knows in his heart of hearts without being told, but must be told.

@55. Ominous, effectively, yes. The non-media left sees all the bad things the press has said about Trump and widely believes they are still true (rampant confirmation bias), so when the MSM gives up the blatantly obvious lies and tries another tack, all their leftist dupes are firmly convinced that they stopped talking about some of the bad things Trump has done.

Effectively, your average non-media leftist is so maniacally, delusionally insane that they will never, ever give up on the obvious lies, while the MSM has at least been dope-slapped enough times that they will eventually try a new tack, even if it's far, far too late.

Thus the avg-left sees the msm-left as traitors who are abandoning the cause repeatedly.
